      @@TomsBigSpidersThat is exactly how long Widows live in Captivity. Cobweavers have stronger vitality than Orb Weavers who live about as long as a Field Mouse.

    I got you beat, we have 5 living under the patio table. There are no chairs so no one sits there. They are not aggressive to us but they eat termites, ants and mosquitoes. Love what they do. They have never bitten anyone. Unless they are threatened they do not try to bite.

      Hi Tom sorry to bother you on New years day I'm not sure if you'll see this or not but I had an unfortunate mishap with my Vietnam blue she got out of her enclosure and jumped about 4 feet to the linoleum floor below, now she's bleeding from her left side leg looks like it's at the joint it looks as though it stopped bleeding but I can't be sure. Is there anything that I can do should it start bleeding again ? She's a teenager and my goodness so fast she was out of the enclosure in a fraction of a second my head is still spinning 😱

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimmysjamin1 Hey, Jimmy...oh no! Poor thing. If she should start bleeding again, put some corn starch on the area with a cotton swab. That will help it to clot more quickly. I hope that she's doing okay!

      @@TomsBigSpiders Thanks Tom I appreciate that so much my Goodness Shockingly so fast I never seen anything move that quickly ! Tom Just a quick update she seems to be climbing the glass enclosure ok and now she went back in her cave looks good so far my hopes is she wouldn't have climbed the glass if she was extremely injured I think she would have opted for the under ground hope I'm reading her correctly and it's just not high hopes even though I have those too thanks again for the good advice Happy New Year.

      @@TomsBigSpiders No problem, anytime. When are you going to cover the podcast/video topic I recommended about good (or preferable) vs bad pest control techniques, for those of us that find ourselves with uninvited arthropod houseguests? Billy working in pest control seems like an great source. I've had good luck getting my own invaders under control with Diatomaceous Earth and well positioned bait traps, but it would be great to hear from an expert what methods we should avoid, or which ones just don't work on anything. Thanks again, and Happy New Year.

      Funny that she's upset about it being in the house, even though we've had pokies and other old worlds here in our bedroom for years. 😅

    Greetings, Tom!!! Thanks for this vid. I just recently took in 3 female Western Black Widows (L. hesperus). I love how they really have to work for their meals. Lol. Much different from our tarantulas which seem to just bulldoze over to subdue their prey.
    One of them was supposed to be a male (according to a friend who gave her to me), but it definitely turned out female.
    No worries about missing a vid. I count it a privilege for the vids you share and have learned never to "expect" folks to entertain/share/teach. If doing this remains fun for you, you'll probably continue much longer than if/when it becomes a burden.

    That's a pretty awesome set up for one. My aunt always has Southern Black Widows in her Fire wood stack. I'm now plotting to set up an AMAC box for one next time I'm out at her place. I've wanted to keep one for a while but didn't have small enough prey for them until recently when I got more in to tarantulas and started getting slings.

    One thing, the red back markings are not the hourglass @3:40. If you look at her ventral side of her abdomen you will see an hourglass that is cut in half and separated. That is how you distinguish them from one another with their hourglass markings. The only difference that does occur with the dorsal markings you pointed out is that generally L. variolus display longer horizontal orange-red markings while L. mactans more so display longer vertical orange-red markings. The same idea behind the general difference in anatomy of paws in canines and felines. This is mostly seen in the second spot going down the backs of these Latrodectus species. This can help distinguish juveniles (like your female) or adult males.

    She's beautiful! I love her markings! If you do manage to get some footage of her or one of your other ones hunting, I'd love to see it. I really enjoy seeing video of spiders just exhibiting natural behaviors, whether that be hunting, eating, webbing, digging, cleaning themselves, whatever.
    Imo, there's not enough good quality footage of these behaviors available to watch- for example, people often put out feeding videos, but only include the initial grab and maybe a happy dance. I of course enjoy that, too, but I'd love to see a video spanning from the initial hunt through to the spider tossing out the leftover bolus, maybe with just the highlights. Asking a lot, obviously- I've mentioned before that I'm greedy! Lol Like many others, I'm stuck in the position of loving spiders (especially tarantulas), but not able to keep any, so I don't get to enjoy observing them at random times doing random things like keepers get the privilege of. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I very much appreciate the fantastic videos you put out, though- I get to enjoy tarantulas vicariously through you! Heh heh. 😆

    Black Widows are so cool. When I was in Australia I saw a number of spiders there and many, many Red Backs, as they are know down under. The Southern Widow is very similar in their markings to the Red Back. Now when I lived in California, we had huge Widows, including the brown Widow that has gorgeous markings, and the false Widows. They are indeed fascinating creatures. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, Billie, and the rest of your family. May this next year be less stressful too!

That’s one of the things we like about Tokays, the reputation scares off the people that probably shouldn’t have them anyway. Props to your wife for supporting you in raising and keeping the Black Widow, and probably most of your collection. Hey Tom great video. I live in Nevada and we have southern widows everywhere and I always have one around as a pet. In my experience the best way to keep them is in a large mason jar or a 2 gallon aquarium. I will put sticks and foliage for them to web to but I will keep the anchor points a few inches from the top of the container so that the webbing doesn’t make it to the top and I don’t ruin it when I open the container. They will usually have many strands of web on the bottom of the container to catch prey walking on the ground. I only say this cuz I notice the container you put her in opens from the bottom so if you open it you will have web everywhere and it can disturb them. Not a criticism at all, just sharing my experiences and what works for me. Awesome spiders and definitely not deserving of the reputation they have!

    Hey Tom my 3in p Metallica began molting yesterday. Last night I noticed it flipped over on its back. This morning it appeared to be about 80-90% molted but still flipped over. I returned from work at about 6:30 pm and it looked as if no progress was made and I have hit the 24hr mark. How long is too long for a molt? I really don’t want to disturb her especially after such a long hard day for her but I am worried she is stuck or has died. Have you had spiders take longer than 24hrs to complete a molting cycle. (Update) well over 24hrs the following morning I checked to see the spider moving air but very obviously stuck. I made the decision to intervene. I pulled the spider out and placed it in a Tupperware with wet paper towels. With a scalpel some sharp tweezers a paintbrush and some wet q tips. I managed to cut away most of the molt and free 3 legs. The sucking stomach is Also free. The spider also lost two legs before i extracted her from the enclosure. She appears to be mostly stuck at the pedipalps and the chelicerae. At least I think it’s a she tho I have never sexed a molt. I haven’t seen any indication of it being a mature male either. But ventral sexing indicates a female.😔 hoping for the best. I am thinking lack of humidity may have been the cause? I do live in a very dry climate (9000ft in the Rockies)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! Usually, they should take a few hours max. 24 hours would be a bit too long, and I'd worry that the old exoskeleton would be quite stuck by now. UGH. I just saw the update part. Fingers crossed that she pulls through. I had to do something similar to one of my Pokies recently, and she has been eating and seemingly doing well. If things got too dry in her enclosure, that could definitely cause molting problems. I hope she pulls through!

I was able to free up the fangs and they were deformed as well and I don’t think she would have been able to feed even if I was able to free her without causing worse injury which I wasn’t.

    Really appreciate your upload. I've been trying to find info...I have a southern widow that will not web (female). I gave had to give her extra attention when it comes to feeding her. Have you ever heard of this? I am a little concerned. I can see her visibly trying to web but no web comes out. Thank you.

      Some web more than others, but if she's trying to web and nothing is coming out, that could be an issue. Has she ever webbed before?

      @@TomsBigSpiders yes when I first bought her the enclosure she came in had web. She dropped 2 egg sacs in my care also. She seems healthy otherwise. Thank you for taking the time to help me.

      I do! I still have my five females together. They tend to be quite shy these days, so I don't catch them out very often. And I'll definitely be picking up more widows. :)

      @@TomsBigSpiders That’s great news Tom👍I’ve found if I mist the enclosures once a day my Balfouri stay out all the time, I believe in captivity they need higher humidity than some believe, Look forward to an update Regards Andy

    This is GREAT! I've been keeping and breeding a variety of Latrodectus. So cool. I use these large clear skull drink dispensers I get on Amazon for almost all my adults. I have a bunch in a row and it looks pretty cool 😂. They cost under $15 so you can't beat it. It gives them enough room to move around, web, eat and even mate. If I need to pull sacs safely for her and the sacs I can do that too. Just add some sticks or sticks and fake flowers to anchor and feel safe.. Give the variolus enough space and they web these crazy tube/funnel type webbing. Neatest Latrodectus web I've ever seen. That was a tip given to me by a long time breeder in the northern states. Do more on Latrodectus please. See if you can get some info on the Latrodectus Bishopi. They're on the threatened list.
    I guess more importantly and I apologize for being more excited to see the video that as always family first. Also, as someone who knows from the sidelines what a SE teacher goes through I can't even imagine how really important a mental break is for you. It takes a special human to do that job and Im sure regrounding is absolutely essential. What better way to do that then with family. Happy new year Moran Family!

      Oh, man...thanks so much for the tip! I just looked them up, and they look quite awesome! I will definitely order some to play with and to create some cool setups! And I will definitely have to give them more space to see that.
      Most folks are totally cool with it and get it; a handful though seem to not appreciate it. Thank you so much for understanding! Happy New Year!

      They are amazing animals, and very misunderstood. And unfortunately, I do not. Sorry!
