We’ve all heard the stories. She mates and then kills. Her venom is 15 times stronger than a rattlesnake’s. One bite could kill you. With a shiny black color and a glaring red hourglass stomach, she has long inspired fear and awe.
But most species of widow spider (there are 31), including the western black widow found in the U.S., don’t kill their mates at all. Only two widow spider species always eat their mate, the Australian redback and the brown widow, an invasive species in California.
And the male seems to be asking for it. In both of these species, he offers himself to her, somersaulting into her mouth after copulation.
He may even deserve it. During peak mating season, thousands of males will prowl around looking for females. Females set up their webs, stay put and wait.
Once the male arrives at her silken abode, he starts to wreck it, systematically disassembling her web one strand at a time. In a process scientists call web reduction, he bunches it into a little ball and wraps it up with his own silk.
Then, while mating, he will wrap her in fine strands that researchers refer to as the bridal veil. He drapes his silk over her legs, where her smell receptors are most concentrated.
After all of that, he is most likely to crawl away, alive and unscathed.

No one really knows, but scientists assume his body supplies her with nutrition for laying eggs. Sometimes she eats him by accident, not recognizing him as a mate.
--- How harmful are black widows to people?
We couldn’t find a documented case of a human death from a black widow spider in the U.S., but a bite will make you sick with extreme flu-like symptoms. Luckily, black widows aren’t aggressive to people.
--- Why do black widows have a red hourglass?
It’s a warning sign, a phenomenon common in nature that scientists call aposematicism, which is the use of color to ward off enemies.

1) They're cool animals
2) The effects of their venom are exaggerated for media sensationalism (such is with spiders in general, very bad rap for such harmless and timid animals).
3) Venom is perfectly easy to deal with nowadays thanks to antivenom, though the majority of cases you don't even need that. Most of the time bites don't get bad unless you go without treating them and the wound gets infected further
3) You don't even have to worry about point 2 much because they're very docile, shy critters. They'll run away and only bite if pestered beyond their limits or if they get squished against your bare skin. A dude had to rub a black widow against his arm for 8 MINUTES STRAIGHT before she decided to bite
4) Their venom is a precious resource they use for their prey, so if you manage to get bitten, it will most likely be a very low dose or a dry bite

Yeah, something's off with whoever wrote this script. S/he knows little about science. The male destroying the web helps keep it maintained. He's doing what the females of other species would otherwise do themselves. She basically gets free labor!!! The narrator herself says that other spiders tear down and rebuild their webs. She's not wise enough to realize the male's doing this for her instead?
To add, the spiders risk their lives when they take down the webs because they have to leave the center where they're protected by the stickiness of the web. When they leave the center tear down and rebuild, they need to expose themselves to predators (other spiders included). The male does this work and risks his life while the female doesn't have to with him present. So, the male is actually protecting the female with his own life. This isn't in the narrated content but someone familiar with spider behavior would know this.
The narrator also states that the male spins his web with his own pharamone to repel other males and that webbing the female is probably to ward off other males. Yet she says it's to "control" the female...
The narrator and/or whoever wrote the script need to get out of the business of discussing anything science related.
To recap: Every negative thing she says about the male is proven false by the very content of the rest of her discussion and a very small amount of attention to details within it.
Not lazy. Not "rude." Not controlling.
So he just inserts himself into her life, trashes her home, keeps her from talking to other guys... and then puts down his life for the kids he fathered with her. Pretty sharp left turn there at the end.
I know that’s crazy controlling! Doesn’t even give her a say. Not to mention all the energy she spends making her web. Only for him to destroy it. I would have stopped him as soon as he started lol she literally just sat there and watched him do it. 🫣

I live in SoCal so black widows are very prevalent here. My dad has been bitten by them 3x now, but I only remember the last time. He was bed-ridden with pain, even tried to go to the hospital but they couldn’t really do anything about it. I just remember him laying in bed, unable to do anything and saying his entire arm hurts so bad. It’s made me very scared of this particular spider

It’s an endless source of fascination learning about the immense variety of “quirky”, elaborate and oftentimes extreme behaviours that different spider species have been “programmed” to do all in the name of ensuring they pass their genes on. The male gives her the silk back so she can eat it to respain her web which she does constantly to maintain the web. Also, the male guards against other females in attaching line to the web so that food is not stolen by rival females. The male is doing her a service.

Spiders rebuild and torn down their web over and over again so the female spider is actually getting free labor. While in the process of taking down the web, the male spider exposed himself to predators because the silk was taken away. Further more, the narrator said that the male spider produce pheromone to ward of other males but later, she said that he is using it to control her.

Apparently, female Black Widows don't actually mind males trashing her web at all as it causes other males to not arrive and harass her with their attempts at mating. She just mates with the male already in her web and gets on with parenting in peace.

The video is obviously blowing things out of proportion to make it seem more dramatic. Different species have different things that work for them.
Well if every female spider killed every male spider, there wouldn't be any spiders. She probably just tolerates it or he does it when shes sleeping. Might be just this particular type of spider too.
You are correct. Either this video is purposefully being false to push an agenda, which is really weird if that is the case, or it is just wrong. The male spider is actually taking care of this female. Those lines he is destroying isn't her lines. But the lines of neighboring spiders. It makes her web more safe, and rolls up her food, and keeps it out of reach of others. Pretty sure a basic google search would have told anyone such, so I imagine they chose to re-write facts for a narrative.
