- Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 - 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. His best-known works include Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (1863), the Second Piano Concerto (1868), the First Cello Concerto (1872), Danse macabre (1874), the opera Samson and Delilah (1877), the Third Violin Concerto (1880), the Third ("Organ") Symphony (1886) and The Carnival of the Animals (1886).

Saint-Saëns composed his Fifth Piano Concerto while in Egypt in the winter of 1895-1896. It was published in 1896 with a dedication to pianist Louis Diémer (1843-1919), who played the piece on several occasions. It is one of the composer's "exotic" works, in which he uses the minor mode with raised sixth and seventh degrees (often called the "melodic" minor). This is the earliest concerto by a French composer to incorporate such "exoticisms," effects that had hitherto been reserved for shorter works and suites. Saint-Saëns' Africa, Op. 89 (1891), and Suite algérienne, Op. 60 (1880), also employ modal inflections to produce local color.
In this grandiose work, Saint-Saëns' references to his time in Egypt include the imitation of croaking of frogs he heard in the Nile, a "Nubian love song," and the turning of a ship's propellers in the Finale. The composer wrote that the second part of the concerto, "in effect, takes us on a journey to the East and even, in the F sharp passage, to the Far East." These effects, plus the place of the concerto's origin, prompted the nickname, "Egyptian," which was not given by the composer. It is the most blatantly pictorial of Saint-Saëns' concertos.
At the first performance of the Fifth Concerto, critics hailed it as "a work of fantasy ornamented and colored like one of the prettiest buildings of the Alhambra...." Both the composition of the Fifth Concerto and its positive reception were rejuvenating experiences for the composer, who had by this time been in the public eye for 60 years. To the orchestration of the earlier Fourth Concerto Saint-Saëns adds two horns, piccolo, and a gong, which slips in surreptitiously as the piano plays a modal, "oriental" passage. - เพลง

First time I heard that, I was too! I was blown away at the sound. Its due to the range and balance of dynamics. It's parallel 5ths, but split an octave and a half, (so a 12th) and then LH is played much louder than the rh so it causes the ear to hear the LH line primarily and the above notes have a very "twangy" metalic sound.

16:16 When I heard this concerto live for the first time, I was shocked to hear this oriental-like melody! For a French composer, Saint-Saens really did break many barriers in culture through his music.
I love the piece, but unfortunately he did not. The intellectual undertone is just an Orientalist one that belongs to a long tradition of Anglo-French literati who actively exoticized and converted the East into the 'other.' This work is no exception, drawing on the same Orientalist tropes of effeminate sexuality and exoticism, especially in the second movement and the supposed quotation of a Nubian love song.

@@saltag Actually, Saint Saens spent a lot of time in Egypt, loved the country, and was often inspired in composition by aspects of Egyptian music and culture. That is why this concerto is titled the 'Egyptian' concerto. Saint Saens was, contrary to your beliefs, being very proper with the culture.

A lot of the time, the best concerti are those which are focused on the beauty of the music as opposed to the technical virtuosity of the soloist. This concerto is a fine example
I left autoplay open and I legit thought that I'm listening to Chinese traditional music played in piano or something haha.
In any case, one of the best piano concertos I have ever listened to.
17:25 I was introduced to this piece when a very wise Liszt musicologist played this part to me, and explained how Saint-Saens imitates stops on an organ. He balanced the tone very well and played it slower, and so I am not used to the sort of playing in this recording!

Yes, he has passages similar to that in most of his concertos, but this is something special. I love that high woodwind part (and that two-note theme that recurs throughout the movement, from different instruments). Just lovely.

Thank you for posting this fine, musical and exciting performance, and with the score, too. Saint-Saens is only recently starting to get the respect and exposure that he so clearly deserves. His music is superb, in all genres. I remember buying the one and only recording available [vinyl]- that of Jeanne Marie Darre in ca. 1960- it had to be specially ordered and cost $25 -allot at the time. Wonderful that his works are finally getting a wider hearing. thanks

My great admiration to Saint -Saens for this wonder but rather unknown work. I admire that he could write the first 40 or so measures in a very, very tonal fashion. He doesn't feel the obligation to start out with notes outside the scale. He does, of course, change keys and use other harmonies later on.

Oh Camille, you sneaky bastard! I was sure I knew that tune from somewhere at 21:08. Turns out it's exact copy of your Etude op. 111 no 6 (which I also get to know from one of Bartje videos). This concerto was published on year 1896, while your etudes at 1892... so yeah Camille, I see what you did there ^^
Oh I played that etude, its amazing. It was hell of a hard work. My teacher said it has something to do w this concerto so it was my homework to listen this :)

A wonderful, musical performance [a little fast for me, I prefer the slightly slower, nuanced recordings of Collard/Previn, Roge/Dutoit or Malikova/Sanderling] and the performers, are both extremely gifted and totally involved. This performance points up how important the orchestra is in all of Saint-Saens' concerti- how the piano and orchestra lines are woven together. Both Nelson and Thibaudet are obviously enjoying themselves and delighting in the playing of this beautiful, colorful work. Saint-Saens is a great master- and so much of his music is not played often enough, at least in the US. thank you for posting this!
why compare a live performance to studio performances? Thibaudet is an amazingly gifted pianist, effortless, affluent, brilliant. I would want to hear the pianists you mention (Roge I uploaded the other concertos) playing this live. At that level it becomes quite pointless to compare.

i think its a combination of the difference in dynamics (right being pp and left being mf) and the difference in ranges that gives it an almost harmonic/overtone sound. Happens around 11:22 as well. Thibaudet mentions that people are often caught off guard: th-cam.com/video/sqtyYdG0vmk/w-d-xo.html . Truly a clever technique by the genius Saint-Saens.
Because he manipulates the harmonics (3 and 5) of the left-hand notes. that causes a change of Timbre, making a virtual instrument. I don't know, if he is the first composer doing it. in 20th century it was a common technique, mostly by French Composers. for example, Ravel does it in Bolero. the Spectral composers like G.Grisey took that as the main composing technique.

Mvt.3 Let me remind of his sixth etude from his set Op111
For me this concerto is really served by seeing the score. Without it, it sounds good, but not "going somewhere". SS is neglected because of the succes of a few minor works of his that are smw kitschy, e g danse macabre and carnaval des animaux.
You could not be more wrong in your observation. No kitsch in St. Saens. Such a foolish comment.
*Astounding* concerto that I only had the chance to rediscover here (had previously heard it in college, but didn't really have a chance to delve into it like this video/recording allows you to do)... What an incredible and invaluable resource for musicians and music students. We would have killed to have the great compositions of the great composers at our fingertips with such convenience when I was in conservatory in the 90's. Back then you had to check it out of the score library and take it over to the listening library---assuming they had the piece you were interested in and/or it wasn't checked out already... I mean, sure, that doesn't sound *too* difficult; but such a hassle, comparatively speaking. Anyway, thank you SO MUCH for posting!

But iI could just mention, while the 2nd concerto is probably Saint-Saens's best known and most popular piano concerto(for reasons I don't understand, I think other than the middle movement the music isn't particularly interesting) I would ask you to consider playing either the 3rd or 4th concerto, or even the first which is quite beautiful, idyllic and pastoral, they are much too neglected works in my opinion and are quite deserving of more frequent performance.
I wonder if Ravel heard this. Parts of the second movement remind me of the G major concerto

I can hear Rach motifs and also a lot of structural and harmonic similarities to Moszkowski’s Piano Concerto in E Major - upon researching the Saint Saens 5 was written 3 years prior to Moszkowski’s - 1896 and 1899. Both great! Prefer Moszkowski’s though, more coherent and spectacularly jubilant
I've been an avid fan of your uploads, Bartje. But I have to say I have never been so vehemently opposed to an interpretation as much as in this concerto. It's my opinion, but the 2nd movement is especially maltreated here.
You kidding me? Thibaudet is phenomenal. This is a live performance on top of it. Fantastic pianist. Don't even try to convince me otherwise, you would be wasting your time and mine.
