  • Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 - 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. His best-known works include Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (1863), the Second Piano Concerto (1868), the First Cello Concerto (1872), Danse macabre (1874), the opera Samson and Delilah (1877), the Third Violin Concerto (1880), the Third ("Organ") Symphony (1886) and The Carnival of the Animals (1886).

Piano Concerto No. 4 in C minor, Op. 44 (1875)
    Dedication: Anton Door (1833-1919)
    1. Allegro moderato - Andante (0:00)
    2. Allegro vivace - Andante - Allegro (12:37)
Pascal Rogé, piano and the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Charles Dutoit
    Description by John Palmer [-]
Saint-Saëns' Fourth Piano Concerto was first performed October 31, 1875, at the opening of Edouard Colonne's "Artistic Association," a series of concerts dedicated to the memory of Georges Bizet. After a concert performance of the concerto in Antwerp the piece was praised as a combination of "the force of Liszt and the suavity Chopin."
In it, Saint-Saëns is engaging in an experiment with the Classical-era forms. There is only one full stop in the piece, dividing it into two movements. Each of these, however, is clearly divided into two parts, with further subdivisions in the second of the two movements. Thus, its form resembles that of his Third Symphony. Saint-Saëns maintains the traditional contrast between keys and fast and slow sections, but the order of events is experimental.
As in the First Piano Concerto there is no orchestral introduction, only an opening phrase played pizzicato in the strings that begins with an upward leap of a tritone (C natural to F sharp). And as in the Second and Third Piano Concertos there is no solo introduction: the piece begins with the orchestra and soloist alternating statements of the first phrase at different pitch levels. Segments in which this theme is transformed -- intervals widened, rhythms altered -- rotate with nearly literal restatements of the theme as the piano part becomes increasingly flashy. A loud C major chord in the orchestra and a brief ritard introduce the key of A flat major and a new section, marked Andante. Rapid, quiet arpeggios and scales for the soloist dominate this part, in which the rising tritone again appears. The virtuosity and weight of the piano part, including massive broken chords, increases relentlessly to the end of the movement.
Saint-Saëns approved of playing the two movements without pause, and this is generally how the piece is performed. The atmosphere of the second movement stands in stark contrast to the introspective tone of the first. A transformation of the main theme of the first movement becomes a Scherzo-like idea in triple meter that bounces along with unbounded energy. The closing theme of the movement is chorale-like and gives way to a close of almost Lisztian bravura, in C major.
The pitch F sharp is of great importance in every part of the concerto, functioning as a push toward the dominant in the first part of the first movement and as part of a path toward A flat major in the second half. In the second movement Saint-Saëns uses it first as a chromatic inflection and later to emphasize the dominant.
Some critics have suggested the lack of developmental procedures in Saint-Saëns' Fourth Concerto is a shortcoming or even a failing. It is difficult, however, to justify superimposing a Beethovenian concept of development on a work that is not constructed along such lines. The juxtaposition of, and interrelationships between, succeeding sections is formal device at work in this piece.

19:47 I love this moment. That melody which had been hiding in the corners of the music for all this time has not decided the time is right to push everything out of the way and take centre stage. It’s such a simple idea but works well. I’d say this Concerto is equally as important as Saint-Saens’ 3rd Symphony and should certainly be performed more.

Well-put. Saint-Saëns was a master of this type of gradually unfurled motivic idea. His mastery of thematic transformation and discovery is just one of the many things for which he is monumentally underestimated.

Well, I did not feel too much enthusiasm at the beginning of this concerto, but I kept listening to it just for the sake of widening my knowledge of the repertory. But the last theme of the last movement has appealed to me, it sounds a bit "Celtic," and its treatment has captivated me. Wow, brilliant! Thank you for sharing.

It's a shame that this concerto is so rarely performed live in concert. His second concerto and even the fifth are played more often, but in my humble opinion, the fourth is his best concerto. Roge's recordings of Saint-Saens' piano concertos are probably the best available. Thanks for the upload with sheet music.

To be honest, I keep changing my mind. Yes, there's a lot to be learned from this concerto, but I'm also smitten with #5, and #2 is a concert chestnut because of the last two movements - one irresistibly cute and the other flat-out virtuoso.

Am I in the minority thinking this his best concerto period? Arguably the least interesting moments are the beginning, but once the triumphant theme first appears in A flat, I'm a little choked up. A beautiful example of Saint Saen's cyclic form, it is well balanced, the piano part is hella fun, and the end is as epic and life affirming as the Organ Symphony.

  • @Mezzotenor

It's always interesting to hear how motifs throughout the concerto are re-used, and this methodical resemblance to the Third Symphony ("Organ" or "with Organ") is hard to ignore. Very fine performance - thanks for posting.

You're absolutely right! A listener below complained of the composer's lack of directionality but this is untrue: true, SS sometimes over does the rhapsodic flourishes and pianismos (I would agree to say he's not a particularly "deep" composer compared to, say, Brahms or Bruckner or Mahler...he is, though, very delightful and accessible to the ear), but he is a stickler to classical forms and his music is all organically constructed: this piece alone has several fugatos which serve exactly the purpose you stated.

    • @cywiringwlad
      @cywiringwlad 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I would also add from a less musical viewpoint (but an artistic one) that sometimes as an artist one has certain images or motifs in ones head and more than one outing or exploration of these is necessary to fully work through them, get them off the brain, if you will.
