A Fine Model of a Canadian Steam Workhorse - The Rapido Canadian Pacific D10 4-6-0 in HO Scale

  • The unsung backbone of many railroads was the small workhorse locomotive that could tackle almost any job given to it. In this video, we follow one such locomotive about her duties. Rapido Trains' second steam locomotive, the Canadian Pacific Railway D10 4-6-0, is a beautiful model. We see the engine in the yard, highballing down the mainline, and switching various industries. Come along for the ride as we watch this fine model train at work.

The modeling world needs more examples of golden age 4-6-0s, not 1800s era but locomotives that were built in the early 1900s and lasted until the terminal era. I understand why people want big boys and T1s and N&W 611, but i have an appreciation for smaller steam from the 20s and 30s and theres not a ton of examples out there on the market in HO. I might have to pick one of these up. beautiful example.

This! The smaller engines - the 2-6-0s, 2-8-0s, and 4-6-0s of the early 20th century would last till the end of steam in many cases, and handled so much of the work that as modelers we try to depict. The face of American railroading for most folks was a Mogul or Consolidation on a mixed train coming to their town twice a day, not Niagaras and Big Boys.

We need more non-USRA locomotives in general, especially of golden age 4-6-0s. The problem (in the North American market) is that each railroad by and large had different prototypes, making mass production of such models difficult. Bachmann did a decent 10-wheeler a while back and Athern has a consolidation and a mogul. Outside of these examples the best models are brass but that's expensive or difficult to find (or both), but brass isn't ready to run.

Check-out Rapido Canada, they're a high-end plastic manufacturer. They just released this 10 wheeler, in 2022 they released the Royal Hudson, later this year will be later versions of the Hudson's.
Also they produce UK rail products in the UK including many OO steam locomotives.

@@geobrower3069 Rapido is a good start, and to be completely fair to BLI they've started producing more and more freight locomotives such as consolidations. The problem for me is locale, since I model the upper Midwestern United States. Though CN and CP did (and do) operate in MN and WI, they aren't necessarily my primary railroads. (That being said I am on the lookout for Rapido's GN USRA boxcars.) If a Rapido D10 went on sale or if I found one at a train show for less than $250 I would absolutely pick one up (assuming I'm financially stable enough to do it lol)
I hope that in the next 20 years we begin to see the steam plastic model market in the US look more like Britain's with more regional protoypes of smaller locos in plastic (especially from roads that don't already have modern steamers like the CB & Q, arguably GN and NP, Milwaukee Road, C & NW and even the B & O.)

Smaller steam locos also fit tighter curves making them better suited for smaller model railroads.

Nice job on the layout and thanks for sharing. I have a couple of the D10s. Really nice model but I do wish they would ship without the traction tire driver installed. But overall, an excellent model!

Wow!!! That was beautiful, gentlemen👍👏!!! What scale is this; 'O'?? Impressed to seee 'Rapido' is still around, though probably not the original company. I messed with model railroading back, in the late '60's, through the mid-'70's. I love my, N scale trains😁!!!

You Sir are to be commended as you weather your rail cars! I'm sick of watching N gauge and HO scale episodes of nearly every program with every single railcar and locomotives painted right from the shop! They spend years on detailing their displays yet, it's not real because it looks fake! So thank you for your railroad! Maybe all these other unrealistic railroad displays will learn a lesson!!! 😊

I do have to pass the credit for the rollingstock shown in this video to the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders, the club to which I belong and whose layout is featured here. I do agree that dirt and grime on the equipment often completes a scene, and I am working through my own collection to get each car looking its best, whatever level of weathering that may be. Many of those will be seen in future videos.

i got me one of these about a week and a half ago, beautiful model although im sending mine for repair because the whistle piece on mine ended up falling off and also i couldnt get the drive to run smooth with the non traction tire fitted set. im happy i have one i just wish they didnt go with an all geared driver style mechanism, definitely the worst part of an otherwise flawless model

I picked one up last Friday. Beatiful model but had a broken cow catcher on delivery and the rear of the tender squats pretty low. The coupler was low and the hose dragged over grade crossings. I had to shim the rear truck with 2 red washers. One of the boiler domes also fell off when I held the loco upside down trying to find out what happened to the cow catcher. I was able to carefully glue the dome back onto the boiler using Elmers white glue. Somewhat hair raising and quite disappointing for a $600 model.

I had a similar experience with my D10…in fact it’s been with Rapido to correct a few serious factory errors since Dec.22…a huge disappointment…they informed me I was 40th in line waiting for attention!

I think the shop crew needs to do something about those squeaky brakes.

I’m pretty sure the crew trashed that boxcar at 14:51. 4’s a couple 5’s a collision. Looked like 15 to me…

What crew? Nobody in the locomotive that I could see.

Yeah, let's just say I have found out while making videos exactly why it is frowned upon for engine crew to try to take video/use electronics and run the train at the same time.
