    Wellington is feared by pilots in the area actually. They have this saying over there, if you can land at Wellington you can land anywhere. The place has crazily severe winds sometimes, making it terribly hard to land your bird.

      @markmckay869 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wellington is actually not that feared by local pilots, in fact, many enjoy flying into Wellington. My dad has been flying jets into wellington for years and even has flown his light airplane no trouble when it's too windy for the jets

      It's not on any big lists as a dangerous airport. There are a lot more dangerous airports than Wellington. Queenstown has mountains closer to the airport. And overseas where the runway is shorter than Wellington, or on a slope, or at high altitudes. TH-camr vs person who creates a Google Account to comment on here. What may seem dangerous to a non pilot would be considered 'another day' by an experienced professional pilot which big commercial airlines have.

    • @ampleman602
      @ampleman602 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not because it's a simulator. It simulates real life and if it's easy to land while simulating then it is only a little more difficult irl. Why do commercial airlines use plane simulators and not just straight up hand them a 747, a380, beluga or dreamliner?

    • @ampleman602
      @ampleman602 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Tigers9596 clearly if he was trusted by other pilots with an airplane then he knows what is doing up there he just did not get it he had to study aerodynamics, geography, mechanics and of course weather conditions as well. So you see you would not call him a starting pilot if he was handed a plane to fly without and instructor.

      I'm in Auckland - It's definitely improved over the past few years as I think they've been resealing the runway although I know about 10 years ago when Air New Zealand were flying the 737's it was often a hard landing on a not very well maintained runway. The Wellington ATC had a rule that was 2 turn-arounds then back to Auckland, as the aircraft just couldn't land with the windiness and such a bad runway. Although, I flew in last week in an A320-D and it was a much smoother landing on the runway than when I last flew in.

    Hey, Swiss. You should check out Placencia Airport in Belize. It has a 650-meter-long asphalt runway that ends in front of water (so you do NOT want to overrun(good title)) and is surrounded in trees in the beginning of it (there is also a ROAD crossing the end of it). I flew there as a passenger in a Cessna Grand Caravan on Maya Airlines from Belize International Airport. The pilots flew direct and approached from the left side.

  • @benja0492

    It is dangerous due to the way the air behaves. It is usually fine until you pass the two mountain either side of the airport. The air is churned up due to strong winds, which creates turbulence, making it tricky to land

    “Only allows small aircraft to land...” Wellington very regularly (pre-COVID) would have A350 land and on rare occasions in the past 747 have been landed here.

      @SpeedbirdHeavy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, Singapore Airlines were flying 777s in 4 days a week and had just switched to A350s 5 times a week before Covid. We also had an A380 in from Los Angeles carrying film crew. Really missing those international flights (I live near the runway). It's not dangerous, just interesting 😀 cos of the wind.

    If they're gonna put Wellington there they might as well put Nelson. One end of the runway is the ocean, the other is a golf course and shopping area. Plus, you fly at tree top level over the beach before landing if you're coming in from the north. NZ has some funky airports

    Wellington International Airport,
    1,815 m (5,955 ft) long Single Runway
    Short comings,
    Runway is Short for most long-haul International Planes leaving little room for if something goes wrong.
    Can be closed due to Fog at times not clearing well into the day.
    Can be closed due to high winds and short runway should the plane not touch down by the right time.
    Has a high bank on both sides of the Runway with water of the Cook Strait and Wellington Harbour,
    has had 3 Incidents as stated by Wikipedia, no deaths.
    Wellington is looking into a longer runway and fog landing Tech,
    Passenger numbers:
    2020 : 4,759,442

    The biggest plane Wellington takes is a half full a350 to Melbourne then onto Singapore. And the issue is its jammed between two hills so there is almost always a crosswind and its also one of the windiest cities in the world.

  • @chrisshieff681
    @chrisshieff681 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The issue is not runway length - it's short but the the danger it is the extreme wind shear which is created by the topography around the airport.
