New Zealand is full of difficult airport runways. They all have their own unique challenges, from mountains to extremely unpredictable winds and short runways to low cloud and fog P.s. it's awesome that you got to ride in the cockpit. You are extremely fortunate
I have just come back from a month in New Zealand and went on this trip from Auckland to Queenstown, l cannot get the whole experience of our trip out my head, absolutely loved New Zealand, back next year for sure !!!
Air New Zealand is still the best flight experience I’ve ever had. On both of my flights to and from the US, the very kind and caring flight attendants moved me to my own lie-flat “skycouch” rows (in economy!) so I was able to lie down and sleep. Queenstown was a breathtaking descent and introduction to the country. Great video Sam, brought back a lot of memories for me! You guys even parked at the same gate I did!

Hi Sammy I’m so glad your showcasing my beautiful country and the airline in which we are so proud of getting you where you need to go safely and comfortably… Big fan here watching from Wellington. Take care on your travels throughout Aotearoa
Your videos keep getting better and better, this one was truly stunning. Hats off to the AirNZ crew and staff and anyone else who helped make this happen. I've always viewed AirNZ as "the friendly" and "approachable/down to earth" airline and this has only further cemented that perception! Special little slice of paradise indeed. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking us along on the journey :-)
Queenstown is such a cool approach from in the cockpit! I know this personally because my dad was working as an A320 captain (he is now 787 captain and at the time of posting he is still in New York), I got to fly in the cockpit with him before he transfered to 787. I would definitely recommend flying to Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, all of those are the major airports of NZ and have stunning views on approach and in the actual citys. Welcome To New Zealand Sam!!! :)
Has your Dad had to make any fuel stops on the way back from New York? The 787 doesn’t quite have the legs for this route if the wind is not cooperating. I think the Airbus 350 is the better of the two, more range and better technology. Ask your Dad which he prefers, Airbus or Boeing?
Wow. That is so awesome! I would do anything to sit jumpseat in the cockpit. In 2006 I was on an domestic flight from Manchester to London(LHR) on British Airways and it was my first time on an Airbus A320. I got talking to a guy beside me and he was a Pilot who flew the 747-400's and he gave me a booklet on SID/STAR info and talked me through the approach into Heathrow. Flying into and out of Queenstown is spectacular. I am an avid aviation enthusiast so spend time when I can at ZQN taking photos/videos. A few years ago I lived in Dunedin and flew from there lots.

One of the best 1 and a half hours in my life. So sad we didn't have Camcorders in our pockets back then!

Air NZ is an absolute trash airline. Try calling them. You'll be on hold for a full 8 hour work day. They may even hang up on you in the first minute if you do get them on the line. I'm impressed Sam could get clearance to hop in the cockpit. I bet the crew is fabulous. The airline itself has a dreadful administration.
Glad to see and hear that they are as professional and easy going as I remember them. Thinking back about the time when Mt. Cook Airlines asked me if they could use a photo I took on the scenic approach to Wellington for their manual or when NZ 1 and NZ 2 flew in parallel from LAX to AKL. Time to go there again!

What an amazing opportunity to fly on an All Blacks (New Zealand Rugby Team) A320 to one of my favorite New Zealand cities. A fantastic country and airline. Amazing landscapes with wonderful people who always want to ensue you have a magical time during your stay. Spent almost three week in NZ and it was hard to leave. Cheers and safe travels.
Last time I flew into Queenstown, we had 2 go-arounds due to wind shear coming off the mountains to the south the airport. Two complete laps of the missed approach circuit over Lake Wakatipu - that was a wild (and very scenic!) ride!
Glad you got to see these flights from the flight deck. Done them many times, ZQN in particular is very special both from the flight deck or from the main cabin.
My daughter and I flew from Wellington to Queenstown a few years ago. Had a excellent flight but was more in awe of our beautiful country. Queenstown is a must if you travel to New Zealand 🇳🇿
My dad is a captain for Air New Zealand and I was lucky enough to go on that same plane you where in (ZK-OAB) and go in the jump seat in the flight deck to Queenstown, it’s very amazing.
That was an utterly fantastic video! The cockpit flight views were amazing! I can appreciate this, having landed at both Auckland and Welly. Loved it from the pilot's perspective.
Once flying into Wellington from Dunedin, just as the plane was turning to the south over Johnsonville to land from the north, waltz music started playing, and man did the aircraft waltz into landing and the most extreme crosswind landing I've experienced
I doubt it was a true cross-wind landing as the runway is aligned north / south which is the predominate wind direction but the turbulence from the surrounding hills will definitely make the plane rock and roll.
Absolutely love this video! As always, superbly produced, edited and narrated; it showcases NZ's amazing landscape so well, as well as all the aviation candy. It's a shame Sam that you didn't strike Wellington on a typical windy day :-)
Hi Sam. I"m sorry Wellington didn't put on it's usual windy weather for your landing. Landing in Wellington can often be quite the rollercoaster! Great to see you enjoying Air NZ...and beautiful NZ.
Haha yeah mate. I’ve landed in Wellington before when I was in a window seat and I was looking down the runway!! Add to that the stomach lifting/dropping and you definitely had the rollercoaster effect. Lovely video Sam. Every time I fly around our country it takes my breath away.
So glad that you got to fly into Queenstown airport. I had my first ever aborted landing caused by a sudden change of wind direction which caused the plane to land other way. Also can be a bit bumpy at times too.
Once when the ferry from Wellington to Picton wasn't sailing due to storm/huge swell, I had to fly out of Wellington, the take off was a bit scary, but when we got to Blenheim it was completely still, amazing how the weather changes in such a small distance.
The thing to remember about Wellington wind is that when it blows its almost always straight down the runway and not a cross-wind. This makes the ground speed on approach lower than normal. However, it can be gusty so the plane will rock quite a bit.
We don't come from New Zealand, but we visit the country about once a year. It is full of pleasant surprises. Great seafood, fabulous. Scenery and hospitable people. Why go anywhere else for a good holiday?
In 1998 I was flying from London to Belfast, my connecting flight got in early so I asked was there any seats for the earlier flight, so they give me the jump seat. It was an amazing experience. i guess things were very different back then.
I was staying in an apartment in Queenstown watching a plane trying to land in terrible wind. It went around 3 times, gave up and went back to Christchurch where it came from. I've never felt such hard braking on an aircraft until landing there. Queenstown is one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
Sam, Happy Lunar New Year to you! The flight vlogs to and all around New Zealand were fantastic. I don't know how you are able to gain access to the cockpit and to converse with the pilots, but by doing so, you supply your subscribers with so much more valuable information. It's a pleasure to watch your vlogs. Keep up the great work. I hope you're enjoying your mom's home cooking this week.
Have been lucky to visit New Zealand twice and hope to return one day. It is an amazing country and diverse landscape. Taking a camper van gives you freedom to travel at your own pace and meet wonderful people. Highly recommend this country to visit, you wont be disappointed.
When you say 'at your own pace', I hope you don't think that means you can travel slowly (less than 90 km/h) when on the open road? Slow campervans on the highways are a major source of frustration for other drivers in New Zealand. If you can see a line of vehicles behind you, are you actually legally required to pull over and let them pass.
Living in Canada and in the Rocky Mountains I am aware of dealing with trailers and camper vans as this is certainly a mode of transport for tourist when visiting. Inferring pace means that you have the ability to stay at places of interest longer rather than be a tour.
I flew into Queenstown 2 weeks ago, from Christchurch(en route to Sydney). It was the most spectacular approach that I've ever experienced. Mountains on either side, and the beautiful blue lake below.... I wanted a direct flight to Sydney, but my travel agent booked us via Queenstown. I'm not sorry about that. Queenstown Airport also serves some mean sushi 🍣 😋 🤣....Happy South African 🇿🇦
Good to see you’re in NZ Sam! Welcome! Air New Zealand pilots are the most highly rated for operating in and out of Queenstown - lucky you didn’t try and go Jetstar, they would have aborted and dumped you at Christchurch with a bus ticket to Queenstown! 😂 (they literally do that!) Enjoy your time here mate, keep the great content coming! ✈️
Air NZ definitely do the same! I've seen many Air NZ planes divert to Christchurch, especially the ATRs and all the passengers are put onto busses!! Been happening long before Jetstar arrived
Air NZ are just as bad tbf. Got dumped in Wellington from Queenstown with no flights available for the next 4 days and had to hire a rental car and drive 11 hours from Wellington to Auckland
I've flown in and out of Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown many times. Flying into Wellington on a windy day is always fun. Coming in sideways does my head in.
Hi Sam, geez NZ is beautiful love your jump seat views and the pilots are so chill, don't know how true this is but air NZ got voted no1 safest airline by maximus aviation, nice video take care bro👍
Air NZ is amoung the safest having suffered one tragedy in the early 80 s when a plane went down on mnt Erebus Antarctica. Statistically the safest airline to date is quantis
Another great perspective and awesome video. It's fantastic that airlines and pilots are showing how difficult it is to do their job. I see one problem with this particular video and it's bloody worrying. The pilot addressing the passenger's as "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls". I have a feeling in the next 2 day's, someone will want Air New Zealand cancelled. Unfortunately, some idiotic life form will complain. Hope not, but it's inevitable.
oh come on, why have you got to try to ruin it with a comment like this? In New Zealand, we have had gender non-conforming people since long before colonisation. You don't need to go there.
Air New Zealand’s flight attendants are really so friendly. They’re equally friendly to the economy passengers as they are to first class. The food is also amazing. Definitely one of my favourite airlines.

Amazing landscapes with wonderful people who always want to ensue you have a magical time during your stay. Spent almost three week in NZ and it was hard to leave. Cheers and safe travels.
Awesome trips, beautiful scenery. This time you where very lucky to seat in the pilot’s cabin. Thanks for sharing.
Lucky you dude
I love the little in-joke of naming the black 320 Alpha Bravo. For All Black(s) of course.
Hi Sam, speechless on the approach to NZQN. What an amazing view!!!
Really cool! thank you so much for your kindness ALWAYS ... We love you dearly ...
Absolutely love this video! As always, superbly produced, edited and narrated; it showcases NZ's amazing landscape so well, as well as all the aviation candy. It's a shame Sam that you didn't strike Wellington on a typical windy day :-)
@ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ 👉 samchui01 thanks Sam!! Cheers, Russell Fredric NZ
I avoid flying to Wellington, always windy when I have done it, terrifying,
@@elaine4498 Same here. I have flown into Wellington half a dozen times and won't do it again unless I have to.
Mr. Sam. I really love it. Sir is very nice to see you again. Like the aircraft.
Beautiful country, friendly people, one of the best country in the world.
Those were both my favourite approaches into Queenstown and Wellington, awesome you got to do a ride along
Queens town and Wellington landings are so scenic beauty to see from the cockpit.
Thank you,Sam👍
So glad that you got to fly into Queenstown airport. I had my first ever aborted landing caused by a sudden change of wind direction which caused the plane to land other way. Also can be a bit bumpy at times too.
Excellent video. Very nice of security to let you stay in the cockpit. Gorgeous scenery. Love this channel!
Stunning. Thanks Sam
Sam Thank you so much for another awesome video! And for showcasing our beautiful country and national carrier!
Thanks for visiting and documenting NZ and Air NZ! Great to see it from the cockpit perspective when I fly regularly as a passenger.
You’re lucky you got to fly in the cockpit, Sam. Wonderful video!
and to be so kind to take us along. especially with that first flight for a few seconds I felt like I was there in that cockpit.
Sam,
Happy Lunar New Year to you!
Just a quick note to let you know that ZK-OAB is an A320ceo, not an A320neo which will sadly be leaving the fleet next month after 12 years of service
No it won’t. Years to go. Lease renewed.
That is some of the most spectacular scenery I ever seen. Absolutely breathtaking.
Love the video Sam! ❤
Thank you sir for showing off my beautiful country. i love this channel 💖🕊
This is what an aproach to queenstown in low cloud looks like - th-cam.com/video/7mxmFCw-Dig/w-d-xo.html
I enjoyed your ride in the cockpit very much and all of those spectacular views👍🙂
typical Kiwi comment showing lack of appreciation for competition; thanks to Jetstar Air NZ prices are just below astronomical ;-)
@Justin Mijnbuis I'm from NZ but heck you got a point mate! :)
Air NZ definitely do the same! I've seen many Air NZ planes divert to Christchurch, especially the ATRs and all the passengers are put onto busses!! Been happening long before Jetstar arrived
@@justinmijnbuis and Jetstar's landing % is probably higher than Air NZ for QT too in recent months during weather......
Air NZ are just as bad tbf. Got dumped in Wellington from Queenstown with no flights available for the next 4 days and had to hire a rental car and drive 11 hours from Wellington to Auckland
Thankyou, Sam! I was born and raised in WLG. Flew WLG-AKL many times. Great video!
I've flown in and out of Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown many times. Flying into Wellington on a windy day is always fun. Coming in sideways does my head in.
Hope you enjoyed Queenstown got back from there last week and had a great time, beautiful approach into there as well
Hi Sam, geez NZ is beautiful love your jump seat views and the pilots are so chill, don't know how true this is but air NZ got voted no1 safest airline by maximus aviation, nice video take care bro👍
Air NZ is amoung the safest having suffered one tragedy in the early 80 s when a plane went down on mnt Erebus Antarctica. Statistically the safest airline to date is quantis
The cockpit is the best view. Awesome, Sam. Thank you for the experience.
Absolutely stunning scenery and the footage and access you have been able to get is a real coup thankyou
