I am very surprised that the highway patrol would not close off the left lane next to the truck you were working at, also I used to ship and receive heavy machine rollers (50,000 lbs) and we had a policy and a sign on the building that said : attn. truckers, no chains ,no load". I know from experience straps are great for lifting but not always for securing loads, but depends on the load and the weight. The truckers I had dealt with always had a "fence" or a stop at the front of the trailer to prevent the load shifting forward and we would not load them if they did not have chains on the end of the machine rollers set up in such a way where the load could not shift sideways or front to back. Straps were used only to hold the tarps down...Keep up the great vids and keep safe!!!
I may be an idiot here, but I think there should be a reinforced structure on ALL flatbeds to keep the load from shifting forward. I'm guessing (and hoping not) that the driver will be cited for improper load securement. It appears to be an industry-standard safety problem, imho.
The handling of traffic by officers never ceases to amaze me. In this case the traffic passing you should be utilizing the vacant emergency lane. That would have given a free lane by you. I would guess that the State has some rule to prevent officers from using it. One would hope they are just not to dumb to use it. Our Volunteer Fire Dept. did a lot of traffic control on I35 and we used it when needed. All you have to do is stop all traffic then restart it with the left lane onto the Emerg. lane, they will follow the leader to keep moving.

Yup, traffic doesn't care about us and they never slow down or move over. Sad that every state has a move over law but it's so rarely enforced. I wish I could ticket every one of those drivers that ran over my cones or got too close

Sometimes (especially in your neck of the woods), that driver intends to give you lots of room, and the idiot in a 4-wheeler on the other side of him forces him into an unsafe position. The right thing to do as a trucker is to slow/stop, and then continue on, but sometimes it happens too fast, and all you can do is hope not to kill anyone.
Why didn’t you detach the truck from the trailer 12 inches or so before lifting the lumber???? Would have been an easier lift plus less damage to the truck
The load was sitting against the truck so any attempt to pull the truck away would more than likely cause the load to fall off. Plus most tow companies do not want to drive customers vehicles at all due to the potential risk of them making a claim that some damage to the truck was cause by the tow operator. Most of the time what those of us who dont work in this field would think is easier most likely isn't. And a lot of times could also be far more risky.
Joe Stimac once he had supported the load with the rotator the other tow company could have pulled the tractor forward 18 inches allowing Pepe’s to be able to connect back together alone after loading the timber on the other truck, So no driving causing damage. The only extra damage was dragging the load up the rear of the truck and to the load itself as not able to move forward. I used to work in this field
This boys and girls is why you use more straps, Get a headache rack and dont be tailgating or on your phone so when they cut you off which they will your load dont go through your cab.
Where do they find these Incompetent truck drivers. From appearances, he had only one strap per bundle on those front bundles.. There is no way that lumber would have shifted like that if it was tied down properly with two straps per bundle and cinched down tight. These drivers are a menace to all of us who share the road with them.
Josh also did you personally oversee the building of the HULK? I mean there's not one thing I would do different with how she is built. Also love, love the fact you went with the full gauge package for HULK.I like the computer screen but you can not beat the look of all those gauges filling up that dash.
Great question and awesome observation. My father personally specs and oversees every single build of our trucks. I flew to the plant with him when they were building Hulk and Big Flipper, was a wonderful experience. We both aren't fans of the inscreen dashes. They're cool but not for us, nothing beats that wall of gauges especially at night when it's lit up

When he tows that rig, the tractor still needs to pivot at the trailer. That wedged stack of plywood would have shredded the cab, and made a heckuva mess, making the problem worse.

@@tonyroma9046 The damage is pretty much done at the point of the accident. Any additional damage required to lift that stack could be cleaned up at the site quickly. If you left it in place, you would have broken bits of the sleeper cab to clean up all along the tow path. Speed is of the essence in clearing the freeway. You only have time to transfer as much of the load as is absolutely necessary. If you took the time to transfer extra (or all) stacks, you would be increasing the amount of time the road was closed by a fair amount, unnecessarily.
Respect man ! But I do not understand how CHP allows for traffic to drive so close to you guys! This could get you killed!! In Belgium the Highway Police would have closed an extra lane.
We have forklifts, but what good would that do here? I'd have to show up on scene, then say "I need a forklift". Call my shop, have them load one or tow on a Landoll, bring it, drop it, then what? Put one on each side? It's not like you could just get under it either, it was on the floor of the bed and wedged hard. How would you do it? That takes a horribly long amount of extra time. I obviously got it done quick and easy with a rotator. Plus the load is unstable, what happens if it falls

Our freeways are slow and crappy as it is. We try and keep lanes open as much as we can. If people respected our slow down move over laws it would be much more easy. I tried to keep lanes open as long as possible until I absolutely needed them shut, which is when I did the rotating

Just a question why didn’t you have other tow company pull the truck from under the trailer to prevent secondary damage to the road tractor. I know you have to get the road clear but I can’t see furthering damaging a customer’s equipment. 10 minutes of work isn’t bad for the risk of more damage. Great work though!!
What additional damage? The massive load literally crashed into the back of his cab, you're really complaining about a vertical lift here? The other truck couldn't handle the call so they left, I mean did you not see the video? Chp only allows as many trucks as necessary on scene. They weren't necessary
What did I tear up? The damage was done, did you not see the fenders flared and the top cracked when I did a walk around? It was wedges hard to the back of the tractor, by pulling the tractor forward you take a massive risk of the load falling off the trailer. Why would I take that stupid and dangerous risk?
Pepe's Towing Service when you had the load secured to you boom that’s when you could have removed the truck . There would not have been anymore risk than you already had
@@froglick28 OK I see what you mean, but that would require two trucks. The company originally called to do this job left so I was solo and this was not my area so it's not easy to get another one of my trucks there. Nor would CHP be happy with me standing by for 45min to get another one of my trucks just to pull this one out. You have to know how to assess things like this, I decided the further minimal damage from coming up this way was negligible compared to the damage already. Rear of the tractor was badly damaged, the front was beyond damaged and will require tons of body work all around.
In my 30 + years in the business, I always have worked with the attitude that takes a given situation and you're in charge of the scene and you do it your way. One of the best I learned from taught me early in my career to never forget that. We were working a recovery late one night. The wet behind his ears Chippie was bouncing around the scene trying to tell us what to do. Finally, Dave took his gloves off, laid them down on the bed and fired up his cigar. And enjoyed it. The CHPer really lost it. He suggested that the officer light another round of fusee, telling him that by the time they were burned out, by him allowing us to do our job, we'd be done. 🤪😎
CrossRoads CHP is crazy about closing lanes. They've even cuffed and put firefighters in the back seat because they wouldn't move the fire truck from blocking a lane. Check TH-cam for chp arrests firefighter, it's absolutely insane.
Helper? You almost never see a tow truck with two drivers. We deal with it daily, it's just part of the job. We have to learn to be alert at all times.

That's what load checks are for. Most flatbedders don't do them.

Speed is of the essence in clearing the freeway. You only have time to transfer as much of the load as is absolutely necessary. If you took the time to transfer extra (or all) stacks, you would be increasing the amount of time the road was closed by a fair amount, unnecessarily.

We have forklifts, but what good would that do here? I'd have to show up on scene, then say "I need a forklift". Call my shop, have them load one or tow on a Landoll, bring it, drop it, then what? Put one on each side? It's not like you could just get under it either, it was on the floor of the bed and wedged hard. How would you do it? That takes a horribly long amount of extra time. I obviously got it done quick and easy with a rotator. Plus the load is unstable, what happens if it falls
Lumber loads is better hauled on Centerbeams.

So CHP stood around on the side while you risked your life rigging to clear their hi-way. They could have been doing a LOT more traffic control.
Our freeways are slow and crappy as it is. We try and keep lanes open as much as we can. If people respected our slow down move over laws it would be much more easy. I tried to keep lanes open as long as possible until I absolutely needed them shut, which is when I did the rotating

Just a question why didn’t you have other tow company pull the truck from under the trailer to prevent secondary damage to the road tractor. I know you have to get the road clear but I can’t see furthering damaging a customer’s equipment. 10 minutes of work isn’t bad for the risk of more damage. Great work though!!
What additional damage? The massive load literally crashed into the back of his cab, you're really complaining about a vertical lift here? The other truck couldn't handle the call so they left, I mean did you not see the video? Chp only allows as many trucks as necessary on scene. They weren't necessary

What did I tear up? The damage was done, did you not see the fenders flared and the top cracked when I did a walk around? It was wedges hard to the back of the tractor, by pulling the tractor forward you take a massive risk of the load falling off the trailer. Why would I take that stupid and dangerous risk?

@@froglick28 OK I see what you mean, but that would require two trucks. The company originally called to do this job left so I was solo and this was not my area so it's not easy to get another one of my trucks there. Nor would CHP be happy with me standing by for 45min to get another one of my trucks just to pull this one out. You have to know how to assess things like this, I decided the further minimal damage from coming up this way was negligible compared to the damage already. Rear of the tractor was badly damaged, the front was beyond damaged and will require tons of body work all around.
In my 30 + years in the business, I always have worked with the attitude that takes a given situation and you're in charge of the scene and you do it your way.
One of the best I learned from taught me early in my career to never forget that.
We were working a recovery late one night. The wet behind his ears Chippie was bouncing around the scene trying to tell us what to do.
Finally, Dave took his gloves off, laid them down on the bed and fired up his cigar. And enjoyed it. The CHPer really lost it. He suggested that the officer light another round of fusee, telling him that by the time they were burned out, by him allowing us to do our job, we'd be done. 🤪😎

CrossRoads CHP is crazy about closing lanes. They've even cuffed and put firefighters in the back seat because they wouldn't move the fire truck from blocking a lane. Check TH-cam for chp arrests firefighter, it's absolutely insane.

Helper? You almost never see a tow truck with two drivers. We deal with it daily, it's just part of the job. We have to learn to be alert at all times.
