I've had that vibration for almost 2 years and still couldn't figure it out gonna check the u joints as ive replaced front end parts as i thought it was a tire problem but driving shaft is the other thing to check
First time to go out in a mopar product , I have a 01 and 02 dodge Ram 1500 both 4 doors . , the 91 nissan hard body pickup would shimmy when it’s u joint went out
I actually watched your last video like 2 weeks weeks ago, I had a click while turning right, I had MAYBE a hair of play in my driverside U-joint, replaced it and now no more click! Great Vid man. Btw I just used a BFH and a large socket on the ground to pop that sucker out, then used a vise to press them in. Worked fine, only took about 1-2 hours
i recently bought my first jeep, its a WJ with the 4.0 inline 6 ,and i hav to say your videos are great.im really falling in love with jeeps in general and i use to be a tuner fan.i had a modified Nissan altima with the ka24de and the motor blew.but im happy cuz now i found a new vehicle with tons of potential and loads of info available from guys like you.thanks bleepin jeep 😊👍🏻
Thank you for this video and the thorough explanation of the symptoms. I was about to replace the ball joints and control arms but I have the clunk when I initially press the gas and ALOT of vibration at speed. You saved me a ton!
I love your pink helmet!!!! I didn't know what that sound was on our Chevy trailblazer but you have helped me to better understand the problem with my vehicle and how to fix it!!!! Thank you so much, you explain things about vehicles very well!!!!
Well, it really depends on which parts you are talking about. I use to use Autozone almost exclusively because they had a lifetime warranty... only problem was, I was changing the same part over and over every couple of months. Now I mostly use Oreilley's for standard parts and they have lifetime warranties on most items and the parts are better quality. For real important stuff I use NAPA.
I like watching videos like this for educational purposes. You're the only channel I've found that actually has quality content for a 4x4 vehicle... But I recently bought a f150 with a 10 inch lift from a friend. It was to good of a deal to pass up, and after driving a 2wd s10 for 5 years, I was ready for a change. I am fully aware of the potential money pit, but it would be cool to see a little more videos related to trucks a little more. If you can't, then videos like this are just as good.
When the u-joints are working correctly the drive shaft spins in perfect balance. When the u-joint has failed, the rotating drive shaft will slip to one side due to the centrifugal force of the rotating mass, causing an imbalance, resulting in the vibration that you would be feeling. The bad u-joint will not cause the drive shaft to bounce back and forth while spinning at driving speed.
This was a a great video. Clear and understandable. Heard the noise and had the service folk lubricate the joints. No noise for about a month, now I hear the noise again in Reverse. I had no idea the parts are that inexpensive, I will get them to replace. Thanks.
ya its either the NSS neutral safety switch... or the shift lever cable is a tad stretched and needs adjustment. You can adjust it on the driver side of the transmission with a little clip, then slide it one way or the other and try again.
True, I almost forgot what a stock driveshaft looks like. And I wasn't counting the double cardans but I guess I could have... I'll make a note on the video.
Ticonderoga Dixon I know this is probably sarcasm but just in case: the U in the name comes from the yoke, and the actual bearing/x-shaped piece is called the spider
thanks bleeping jeep, my driveshaft fell off out of the front when i hit a hard bump, i noticed the front yoke nut inside was completely off hence why it couldof fell off so easily, but now i have a vibration after putting it back together, wasnt sure if it was a bent driveshaft or what, now at least i can check my u joints first because no visual bend in my driveshaft, and its a 87 and dont want to fork out a ton of money!
Awesome Barbie helmet. I can't even get the grease gun to fit into the u-joints on my GMC Yukon. I just had them replaced both brand new and the guy didn't grease them. It was a terrible experience I helped him pounding for 2 or 3 hours. And inner clips that were rusted shut.
Your videos are all awesome. As a new jeeper I really like how you show every step of the process with detailed explanations of what and why you are doing what you are doing. The videos are fun to watch too because of your off kilter humor. I can't say thanks enough for all of the info.
that sucks man! I'm not sure... I guess they just wanted you to replace them every so often anyway. The greasable ones only work better if you keep em greased though so make sure to do it regularly.
my stepdad just got a 94 ranger and he was trying to explain to me what the u joints were because the front ones froze up indefinitely, but the way he was trying to explain it to me wasnt as clear until i saw what they looked like. cant wait until thats fixed so i can go wheeling for the first time lol
you are amazing man... very professional very straight forward ... I was scared to death from the noise i heard in my JK i though it was something to do with my front diff did a bit of research and got here ... and BAM heard the exact noise turned out it's my front drive shaft U joint ... thanks again
Not sure what it means for a tire to fold under you but... 1st make sure you are not in 4wd. 2nd Did the previous owner have a locker in the front axle?
well, there should be a bit of slop in your ring a pinion, this is called backlash. It shouldn't bee too much, but just right. to check it out further remove the driveshaft so you can see if it is in fact coming from the ring an pinion.
not necessarily, I would think the u-joints would be binding in either direction as they should be angled the same whether turned left or right. The clunk I would assume would be from the track bar or a loose steering box, or possibly a REally bad tie rod end.
sounds more like a brake issue but hard to tell from here. check that your dust shield isnt bent. could be many things but look for metal to metal contact somewhere.
When driving down the road, in 2WD, will you know if your front Ujoint is bad? (I ask because it wouldn't be in use while in 2WD). Love the channel! Thanks!
Ya that sucks when that happens. you would think that they would make the little tabs on the side of the yolk much bigger and stronger... I'm not sure why they don't??
kicking U joints are primarily found on straight line drive like drive shafts. On steering components such as the front ends of jeeps, if the bearings are gone you will notice binding and wheel hop on turning on dry pavement.
Redish rust powder around the 4 rubber sels are another sign. And many times a bad one with dried grease wont show loose moovement or anything, but after greasing and driveing it for a few days it will get noticeably loose.
I've had a similar problem twice. First with my original front axel assembly and once on my second after replacing the entire assembly because a bomb went off inside my diff. The pop happens in my driveway over pot holes. And when turn wheel to the limit in either direction. On my first assembly I replaced all my tie rod ends, both my front axel U joints, sway bar bushings and links before I figured was literally just 1 bad lower ball joint.
Thanks for the awesome instructional video. I suspect one of my U-joints is starting to fail. Now I know what to inspect the weekend. Thanks for posting.
Sometimes when you spin the wheel you can't see the slip in the axle u joints. You can also rotate the drive shaft with your hand while the Jeep is on the ground, and see the movement in the u joint that way.
I wouldnt assume the driveshaft u-joint. Usually you will get a bad vibration from that but thats about it. I would think maybe the ring and pinion or possibly the brakes have come apart.
This was a very informative video, and I like the little bit of humor thrown in. I've read on other sites how to check for bad u-joints, but having a visual makes it a lot easier to understand now. I have a '96 f-150 that I suspect has a bad u-joint, but I'm thinking I may have a bad tie-rod end also. A few years ago, the driveshaft actually fell out of my truck. Luckily, I was going slow when it happened, but the part that the u-joint attaches to was broken or something. So I had to get another shaft, in addition to the new u-joint. I'm going to look it over this time and try to avoid a repeat.
Hey Very good content about u-joints and your wacky silly ending was just enough to make me chuckle out loud ! Andrew in Santa Fe with a front end shimmy !
well it should have a pit of rotational play... that is the slop between your ring and pinion gears. But not vertical or horizontal play as I described in the video.
Are your lug nuts on tight? Also, it could be that if your 4wd selector is jammed up it could be in 4wd and that wouldnt be good. sometimes the linkage can get messed up under the vehicle and your selector wont show the right thing.
Very helpful, I was trying to pin point the problem on my Tacoma, getting a lot of squeaking from the rear when in reverse as well as when I've been driving for a while. Vibrations started yesterday when I would accelerate. Am I on the right track?
Hello, did you ever fix the yoke behind the u-joint? If so, I believe I have the same problem, do you have a video of that or could you post a video of that repair?
Heh lol you do the jack n wood setup the exact same way I do on my front axle. Now I don't think I'm so dumb for doing it. Great video thanks. I'm using your videos to help me get my 2000 xj all fixed up
I'm subbing because of great advice and you sound like Mr. Rogers. I know you've heard that, it's a compliment. Mr. Rogers had that calm, easy going demeanor with a therupedic drawl of a voice. Thank you! I clicked on your video because my C6 6spd Vette is making a 'cluk' sound on the rear right wheel, only when I engage or disengage the clutch at slower speeds. At least that's only when I can hear it. Regardless of Jeep, I'll be tuning in!
Had a vibration on the front end of my Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 - went through the tires balancing, rear drive shaft joints and balancing. I did have a weight on the rear shaft that was missing so had it balanced. Still had the problem front drive shaft looked good no wobble or movement that would indicate that it was bad IT WAS THE PROBLEM after taking off the shaft one of the caps were frozen, could not spin the cap or take it off. Replaced the u joint installed the shaft VIBRATION GONE. Just because it doesn't look bad it maybe.
Mine doesnt vibrate and isnt loose but there's grease sprayed everywhere like one of the bearings exploded and it sounds like a bad bearing. It sounds terrible when I accelerate from a stop. Kind of weird symptoms. I changed a bunch of pulleys out on the engine thinking it was those. It did need it anyway but the sound didnt go away. I'll replace this next as soon as it stops snowing!
I have a 1999 Cherokee limited xj. My transfer case is making a noise ( like the chain is loose) still shifts into 4 wheel. Should I by new or rebuild the one I have? I am new to this world of jeeps and any help would be appreciated. I like your videos, no bs and really helpful
Great video, thanks. I especially liked the Barbie helmet; Nice touch. :-) Seriously though, this was helpful. When you described the "clicking" at the axle end u-joint, it pre-confirmed what I had suspected. I guess at 190K miles, the u-joints don't owe me much. Keep up the bleepin' good work. Cheers.
hey you just earned a subscriber, I have a clicking noise on passenger front tire and im semi mechanically inclined, for the price ill change all of them
your right its the only way ive found too. I ordered a farm style 7,000 lb bumper jack last week should be here tomorrow and it should lift it easier and quicker but I really dont know yet. My 75 camaro came factory with one and it was pretty sweet so figured id try it with jeep. It said in description it was offroad jack have you ever used these style jacks?
I ended up almost being able to pull the u joint apart by hand mine was so damaged. Great video though will help diagnostics in the future thanks. Only note would be to flip the camera next time, its disorienting watching upside down
Thanks a lot for this video, was great help....saved my bucks. I just wanted to know the solution to yet another problem.....how to fix the jerks from gear shifts for automatic transmission, 1999 jeep cherokee
Awesome video and great tips. It seems the next video is going to be "How to replace front pinion bearing" or you can wait a while and then make "How to rebuild front axle". lol
We are restoring our 1999 XJ jeep, and when we started, it would shake, rattle and roll. Each time, we replace something, a noise is eliminated. The roaring sound on our jeep was the transfer case. A bearing went out and the chain was stretched out. We had it rebuilt, roar gone, but we now have the helicopter noise, possible the U-joints? We are checking those now. Thanks for video!
+Daily Learning Found out it was the Jeep Differential! No more roaring down the road. Only left item to fix is the lift kit sway bar - then get the jeep painted!
Question. There is a popping sound coming from my passenger side anytime there is weight put onto that side of the 06 Wrangler X. I am in the process of replacing my u joints now, just wanted to know if there was a correlation with the two before I really tear it apart? Thanks Bleepin! You've been my go to for repairs and your Instagram keeps me entertained!
Similar play in my 96 rear end. U joints appear to be fine. With rear wheels in the air, when spinning tire back and forth I sense a "delay" of some sort. A hard catch I when changing direction. Hard for me to be sure if it is central at the diff or originates somewhere further up the driveline.
I just bought a cj5 with a 30 front/44 rear. The front diff is bad, ujoints in axle shafts are bad, both front wheel bearings, ujoints in the front driveshaft are bad, lower steering column bearing is bad, the steering coupler right before the steering box is bad, and the engine runs shitty when idling and smokes white, but it won't overheat. Hopefully the timing is off and the carb. Arrrhggghhh!!!!! Your bids are helping me, but good lord this is a nightmare!
man this would have come in handy 3 weeks ago when my rear driveshaft decided to Blow off and bend the rear transfer case shaft 1100 later i now have all greasable u joints and replacement shackles to correct pinion angle lol but other wise excellent vids. Why did jeep not make the factory u-joints greasable?
Thanks for mature language and not cussing up a storm. You're awesome.
Shithead
Your god damn right
damn fucking a str8 bastards
Shit cock asss
Buncha poopheads!
I'm new to the world of XJ...and dude, you're saving my bank balance here!
thanks for finding us!
Rudi Geyser same here
Thank you for not having a 5min long intro like a fucking rap song, oh, and for explaining things clearly.
Brian M what’s wrong with rap music?
I agree, just straight to business.
Holy cow these are the sounds I've been hearing for months, now I know what it is. Thanks for the video.
This guys comedic genius is so underrated. He would put SNL out of business in one revolution of a 38 inch mud tire.
Stay gold.
dnl machine hell yeah he would
Sounds like the church lady
I've had that vibration for almost 2 years and still couldn't figure it out gonna check the u joints as ive replaced front end parts as i thought it was a tire problem but driving shaft is the other thing to check
I like this guy he knows his shit
really appreciate your site and the good clean language you use. Has helped greatly to keep my 93 cherokee country in top shape. Thanks again
Glad to find one of your old videos on this feels terrible when u joints go out in a quad cab truck especially when it’s just rwd
First time to go out in a mopar product , I have a 01 and 02 dodge Ram 1500 both 4 doors . , the 91 nissan hard body pickup would shimmy when it’s u joint went out
Got rid of my XJ, but I still come to your channel for vehicle troubleshooting.
get it back man, sadface;(
Yeah I miss it...
Justin Bingham sell ya mine
Are you kidding me? This is one great video. The author explains things well. He is easy to understand.
I actually watched your last video like 2 weeks weeks ago, I had a click while turning right, I had MAYBE a hair of play in my driverside U-joint, replaced it and now no more click! Great Vid man. absolutely the best diy jeep videos. thank you for what you do!

thank you!! been having really bad vibrations at around 60-65 mph here lately, now just gotta go check it tomorrow (92 Cherokee Laredo)
he's like Mr. Rogers gets a jeep lol
Hello neighbor.
Hai yaa loose joint no good ,😨🤔
That is one of the most spot on descriptions ever. He needs a cardigan!
Your comment showed before he started talking, and you absolutely nailed it. So funny 😂
Hahahahaha

It's just not right how an X-shaped object is called a U-joint.
Ticonderoga Dixon I know this is probably sarcasm but just in case: the U in the name comes from the yoke, and the actual bearing/x-shaped piece is called the spider
@@97skinnyboyswag let's see 'universal' starts with a 'u' and it's a "universal joint" hmmm.....why WOULD it be called u-joint????
A cross joint is something you smoke soooo
Nothing makes sense in the English dictionary lol
2 U's connect to the joint opposite of each other
thanks bleeping jeep, my driveshaft fell off out of the front when i hit a hard bump, i noticed the front yoke nut inside was completely off hence why it couldof fell off so easily, but now i have a vibration after putting it back together, wasnt sure if it was a bent driveshaft or what, now at least i can check my u joints first because no visual bend in my driveshaft, and its a 87 and dont want to fork out a ton of money!

probably one of the best explanations I have seen yet. Great presentation,
one of the best channels. straight to the point no bs...
You rock! THanks for the help. I was driving to work this morning in 4 high and I think I may have a uJoint out. I will check when I get home.
my stepdad just got a 94 ranger and he was trying to explain to me what the u joints were because the front ones froze up indefinitely, but the way he was trying to explain it to me wasnt as clear until i saw what they looked like. cant wait until thats fixed so i can go wheeling for the first time lol
you are amazing man... very professional very straight forward ... I was scared to death from the noise i heard in my JK i though it was something to do with my front diff did a bit of research and got here ... and BAM heard the exact noise turned out it's my front drive shaft U joint ... thanks again
Don't even own a jeep, but subscribed after this. Learned a lot in a very short time. Thanks for the vid dude!
Great video, not sure if this is even my problem yet but now I know what to check for general maintenance as well!
Not sure what it means for a tire to fold under you but... 1st make sure you are not in 4wd. 2nd Did the previous owner have a locker in the front axle?
well, there should be a bit of slop in your ring a pinion, this is called backlash. It shouldn't bee too much, but just right. to check it out further remove the driveshaft so you can see if it is in fact coming from the ring an pinion.
sweet, thanks for watching!
"So what's a u-joint, well it's this thing-a-bober" 😆...
😂😂😂
not necessarily, I would think the u-joints would be binding in either direction as they should be angled the same whether turned left or right. The clunk I would assume would be from the track bar or a loose steering box, or possibly a REally bad tie rod end.
sounds more like a brake issue but hard to tell from here. check that your dust shield isnt bent. could be many things but look for metal to metal contact somewhere.

And that 4th little bearing cap went 'wee, wee, wee, all the way home!'
LOL. Great video
Good clear video. I have a vibration under my Suzuki and suspect one of the UJ's have gone on the front prop. This has helped me confirm it :-)
Thank you for your time in putting this video together and sharing this information with us. This clarified quite a few things for me. Cheers
Redish rust powder around the 4 rubber sels are another sign. And many times a bad one with dried grease wont show loose moovement or anything, but after greasing and driveing it for a few days it will get noticeably loose.
Nice helmet! Thank you for helping me diagnose my Jeep problem.
I've had a similar problem twice. First with my original front axel assembly and once on my second after replacing the entire assembly because a bomb went off inside my diff. The pop happens in my driveway over pot holes. And when turn wheel to the limit in either direction. On my first assembly I replaced all my tie rod ends, both my front axel U joints, sway bar bushings and links before I figured was literally just 1 bad lower ball joint.
some of the older jeeps had smaller u-joints... they can be swapped out with the newer year shafts without issue.
I got to say I love your vids, you actually show what to do and explain clearly as you go. keep it up
great channel man, I find it hard to find quality jeep repair videos. thank you!
Thanks for your input. I checked and now im pretty sure its the pinion... Its a Dana 35, time to swap a F8.8
Thanks for the awesome instructional video. I suspect one of my U-joints is starting to fail. Now I know what to inspect the weekend. Thanks for posting.
Sometimes when you spin the wheel you can't see the slip in the axle u joints. You can also rotate the drive shaft with your hand while the Jeep is on the ground, and see the movement in the u joint that way.

great video bro thanks i was about to replace all of them for nothing, i rather check em now than to replace abuncha crap i dont need!!!
Very helpful, I was trying to pin point the problem on my Tacoma, getting a lot of squeaking from the rear when in reverse as well as when I've been driving for a while. Vibrations started yesterday when I would accelerate. Am I on the right track?
Hey what kind on rear drive shaft is that? Great video, learn a lot & have fun watching them.
That’s exactly the clicking I’ve been hearing on my dodge front end. Getting them both replaced next week.
Ditto
Hello, did you ever fix the yoke behind the u-joint? If so, I believe I have the same problem, do you have a video of that or could you post a video of that repair?
Nice tutorial on diagnosing a bad U joint.
Heh lol you do the jack n wood setup the exact same way I do on my front axle. Now I don't think I'm so dumb for doing it. Great video thanks. I'm using your videos to help me get my 2000 xj all fixed up
only running 235/75/15's....wasn't doing any of this couple months ago when I bought the jeep but now it does.
Great video. As clear and as easy to follow as can be for newbies like me. Much appreciated!
Glad I found this vid, couldn't figure out why I felt vibrations at higher speeds
I'm subbing because of great advice and you sound like Mr. Rogers. I know you've heard that, it's a compliment. Mr. Rogers had that calm, easy going demeanor with a therupedic drawl of a voice. Thank you!

If you dont mind waiting for mail then get Spicer U-joints
Nothing has changed. Ordered 4 spicers for my Jeep tj last week, they won’t be here till next week.
I have a 1999 Cherokee limited xj. My transfer case is making a noise ( like the chain is loose) still shifts into 4 wheel.
Should I by new or rebuild the one I have? I am new to this world of jeeps and any help would be appreciated.

To the point, great visual and good optional problems to look for.
great video Old Gregg
hey you just earned a subscriber, I have a clicking noise on passenger front tire and im semi mechanically inclined, for the price ill change all of them
your right its the only way ive found too. I ordered a farm style 7,000 lb bumper jack last week should be here tomorrow and it should lift it easier and quicker but I really dont know yet.
It seems the next video is going to be "How to replace front pinion bearing" or you can wait a while and then make "How to rebuild front axle". lol
Dave dablave I’m glad someone said it lol
U smokin ujoints or huffin mud....my truck has none of those parts...if i could remember where i left it. I could double check.....rock on jeep muffin
This guy is the fuckin best every time i have an issue with my jeep this guy shows me how to fix it
Thanks for all your videos. They've been a big help.
Only left item to fix is the lift kit sway bar - then get the jeep painted!
thanks and keep watchin!
Question. There is a popping sound coming from my passenger side anytime there is weight put onto that side of the 06 Wrangler X. I am in the process of replacing my u joints now, just wanted to know if there was a correlation with the two before I really tear it apart? Thanks Bleepin! You've been my go to for repairs and your Instagram keeps me entertained!
do you really drive that jeep or its just for maintenance training ;)
Similar play in my 96 rear end. U joints appear to be fine. With rear wheels in the air, when spinning tire back and forth I sense a "delay" of some sort. A hard catch I when changing direction. Hard for me to be sure if it is central at the diff or originates somewhere further up the driveline.
I have a 6" lifted power wheel Barbie jeep thatll match that helmet perfectly and its got some 12" super plastic swampers on it.
Any tips on ajusting pinion angle. I just did a basterd pack thanks to your help and its popping like crazy. :(
I just bought a cj5 with a 30 front/44 rear.
