Fly Fishing New Zealand - CHASING TAIL

  • A quick weekend respite from the terrible weather we've been having in Wellington this summer.
    Nestled on a high plateau in the central North Island of New Zealand, this small, shallow lake offers up so many moods in an amazingly barren, but beautiful surround under the shadow of an active volcano.
    The fish are large, averaging around 2.5 - 3kgs or (5 - 6.5lb). Whilst most anglers utilise boats. I enjoy the challenges of fishing it from the shore, it's hard, and never gives up it's fish easy, but they make up for it in satisfaction once one slides into the net.
    Looking for tails waggling on the muddy flats and intercepting with a well placed cast is heart pounding stuff.
    The big fish over 8lbs eluded us this trip, but they were there...

      Cheers Colby, yeah, adds an interesting perspective for sure, it's VERY easy to spot trout with it, but feels like cheating, can't wait to take it into the hills when the weather settles... maybe in 10 years time?!

      Awesome, thanks for the comment, yes, it's definitely on the shopping list, if I can get my hands on one! They seem in impossible supply here in NZ, but they certainly tick all the boxes for the perfect fishing drone. Andrew

    Excellent video Andrew--some nice steady shots from above too. Dry as a bone here on the east coast--need some rain soon.
    Bonus though--the cicada are calling at Lake Waikaremoana.
    Cheers

      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Baz, complete opposite here! As a side I'm looking at the Mavic Pro, simply because it looks even more portable than the Bebop! Cicad'as here are pathetic this season, really bad for them sadly.

      @Bazdavies1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You guys have had some nasty weather your way--we have had those N/W winds that dry everything out-water temps are stressing out the trout in all the rivers. The mavic is a good choice- Andrew. Enjoying the vids. Keep up the good work.
      Cheers.

    Quality production once again Andrew, drone is def adding another dimension and loving the time lapses. Looked like a fun trip with the boys, camper van looks the go mate! Had a quick trip up the back of here a few weeks back, not a lot of fish but the ones that were there were def looking up. Hope to get back up there next weekend if this bloody rain decides to stop and summer finally happens!!

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris, yeah the drone is great, already looking at the Mavic Pro as it's so portable! I'm almost ready to take up golf, just so over it! Glad you got a few, normally give the area a miss in Jan with all the holiday makers, did you see many trampers etc coming down the riverbed?

    • @doubletaper1453
      @doubletaper1453 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was up there xmas/ boxing day so got up there before the holiday makers, not a single person on the river lucky! Stimulator and cicada patterns went well on the fish I did see, yeah feb march will be better with some warmer weather. Let me know if your keen for a trip up there sometime. Gotta bit of footage from my trip but not enough to make a decent clip so going up again to join the dots and get a bit more for something watchable. Don't take up golf it's frustrating as hell, but like a big brownie sitting doggo haha!

      Hey mate, drove over the river today... raging! Just got back from a weekend up there again and got some stonkers! Heading up again tomorrow if your floating round the central plateau by chance. I'm still hanging out for back country but nearly given up hope!

Just got back from the Naki and got a quick flick in and managed to hook a few. Looking like a decent weekend coming up so heading up back of here again, your welcome to join me if your about. hope you get some nice ones up there.

    Never seem to get tired of watching these films.Do you blokes always string the duo fly from the hook bend of the dry ?
    Looks that way in other films but like to be sure.
    Best JP

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jon, yes, mostly, sometimes I use the NZ Strike Indicator as well, but 90% of the time straight to the dry bend, works well except in a direct upstream dry take where the fish can nudge the fly away by hitting the trailing nylon first. Andrew

    love the vids! They give me an escape from fishing for 12 inch trout on English streams :-) Can I ask the model of camera that you use for your zoom shots? Cheers

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! At present I'm using a Canon G3X, mainly due to it being weather sealed, it's actually very good for video, but the auto-focus lacks a bit, BUT the best feature it has is the massive 25x optical zoom, really gives a nice soft background which is hard to get in video, a cheaper version nearly identical is the Canon G7X, it's also a great camera, much smaller, but with a lesser zoom, all my other clips are generally shot on the G7X. Cheers, Andrew

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your reply, it's provided plenty of food for thought. I have my own channel but am still using my Drift action cam so was looking for a camera to (hopefully) take my vids to the next level. I was tempted by the G7X II but you've just helped me come to my decision. Thanks again and keep up the good work :-)

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, I still use the Drift, but it's getting a bit tired now, it's been a faithful companion despite it's quirks! You'll love the G7X, I would probably put it as the best fishing video camera out there, just have to be careful as no weather sealing and does not like wet fingers or rain... don't ask me how I know! Andrew

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      troutboynz I know what you mean about the drift, but love the flashback feature, it means I don't miss a bite. That's defo the type of info I need for the G7, might look at one of the more durable camera's from them since the UK weather is so crap. thanks again.
      Cheers Nathan

    Very nice. What drone do you use?

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, it's the Parrot Bebop2, brought it due to its size and weight so I can take it into the bush, it's fantastic fun and easy to fly, but not the image quality of the DJI Mavic which I may get next despite being 1080 at 30fps. Cheers, Andrew

  • @ShotawayFilms
    @ShotawayFilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know I have asked this before but cannot find the post.Diameter of tippet and type ? Think you said Maxima but ? 5-6wt rods ?
    Scott Radian I recall and a Sage.Tippet is the big question especially with smaller flies.Luv the films.
    Best JP

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi JP, no problem, gear used is Scott Radian's, both are 906-4 rods mine with a Lamson Guru #2 reel, which is a real work horse for backcountry work.
      My leader configuration is as follows. I use a 12ft factory tapered leader down to around 10lb tippet, but as soon as I purchase and before use, I chop off approx 2-3 feet of the silly thin end and blood knot on 2-3ft of 8lb Maxima Ultragreen (it's great material!). this way when I change the tippet I'm not continually chopping into the tapered leader section, just the 8lb. The tippet is yes, usually 4-6ft of 5lb Maxima, it's just so consistent in knots and durability. I am not a fan of Fluorocarbon at all, I just seem to loose so many fish with it on hook sets and knots, but never an issue with Maxima at all. I think the tippet diameter of the 5lb Maxim is 0.20mm.
      I will drop to 4lb Maxima on tippet for small dries, but seldom go less than that as the fish can get pretty big at times and pop you off in a heartbeat. Dan who is one of the other guys in the clip uses an old Sage 905-4 XP which he will never part with and for good reason, it's a fantastic rod! His reel is a 15yo Lamson that just goes and goes!
      Hope this helps. Andrew

    • @ShotawayFilms
      @ShotawayFilms 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helps a lot Andrew.Here on some of our reservoirs the rainbows averaging 2.8 seem to be able to annihilate too light tippets even on 4wts.Tippet diameter is much the same but a fair bit higher stated BS although Max UG does overtest by a good margin.Just seeing those fantastic condition lunker fish made me wonder when having to use small flies.Thanks for reply.
      Best JP

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think from memory you are right, the Maxima, tests out at 0.7lb over stated in testing, agree, I tend to go on diameter these days rather than tested BS. Some of the newer fluoro tippets are just silly then, no substitute for diameter in tiger country however, but needs to be balanced with getting the "hookup"! Andrew

    can I ask what sort of drone/camera you are using? have just produced a hunting DVD and can see the advantage of using a drone to video deer. thanks

    • @troutboynz
      @troutboynz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, using the Bebop2 drone with Skycontroller2, it's a fantastic package and light and fast, but video quality is not as good as a Mavic Pro which is the king in this class, but also more than twice the price. The Bebop is discreet and very suited to scoping deer, exactly what I will use it for soon enough, line of sight range is over 2km, but less with trees in the way. Regards, Andrew

      No problem, I'll have a squiz tomorrow, sounds interesting, I was just discussing the other day how drones would be fantastic on Deer, Dave Shaw from the Hunters Club is the man to talk to on drones and filming deer, he does a bloody amazing job of it! Andrew

      Yes, not the brightest animals, quite inquisitive, looking to get into the Ruahines with it next month to film some animals. I'm going to upgrade to the Mavic Pro drone soon, so will be selling the Bebop, but it's still a fantastic starter drone for filming and oh so stable!
