Kawasaki Versys 650 2 Up Performance and Motorcycle Passenger Safety

  • One of my favorite things is riding 2 up on my Kawasaki Versys 650 with my daughter as my motorcycle passenger. I often get asked about how the Versys 650 does with a passenger on the back, and this video has all the answers to that question. Short version: the Kawasaki Versys 650 does very well with a passenger/pillion. It's a great bike for riding with your significant other or your kid.
    Motorcycle passenger safety is incredibly important to me, especially when that passenger is my daughter. One of the most important and easy to follow motorcycle passenger safety tips is this: WEAR GEAR. Full gear is essential to ensure your motorcycle pillion is as safe as possible. Accidents happen, not matter how good a rider you are, and it's important to ensure that the motorcycle passenger on your bike is as safe as possible. Motorcycle passenger gear is priority number one and should be a requirement before getting on a bike at all.

    You are a smart and caring daddy motorcyclist. My daughter first became my passenger when her feet were able to rest on the passenger foot pegs ( a law in my state). She then took a couple of dirt bike riding classes and received her motorcycle license when she was 16 after she completed the MSF Basic Course. She received her first street bike when she turned 17 and used it to go to college. Without a doubt, one of the greatest thrills of my life is riding with my daughter. Which explains why I enjoy the follow position so much; I love seeing her ride in front of me. You're on the right path, daddy motorcyclist; my compliments to you. P.S. Having her become accustomed to ATGATT at this early age is important too. Great job.

      I may not always wear all the gear, admittedly (especially in this godawful heat in the summer in the NW) but I will always keep my helmet on my noggin and gloves on. Thanks for being a totally awesome member of the moto video community.

    Enjoy it! I took my daughter with me when I did the msf course. Supper fun. She got her motorcycle license before the car license.

    Love this video!! I have 2 daughters, 8 and 5, and they continuously beg me to take them for a ride. I too am a ATGAT believer, so their rides have been limited to our neighborhood until I can get them both fully outfitted. There are potential dangers in most everything that we do, but we can’t let that keep us from what we love. Glad to see that you’re letting her enjoy the ride with you in the safest way possible.

      Exactly! You can't let risk stop you from doing things...but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take every reasonable precaution.

    I did a few hundred miles on my motorcycle before I took anyone on it. I did one distance ride with my girlfriend and two very short rides with each of her kids, 17 and 14.
    I have a no passenger policy for now until I replace the suspension on my old hog to ensure safety with that much weight. My girlfriend would rather have her own bike, to ensure she's in control and comfortable, previously the suspension gave her a lot of discomfort in her lower back.
    I got ass packed once coming home from work, thank raptor Jesus I was solo, I'm jittery at that intersection now, so I get why you're tense.
    Ride safe out there!

    My kids (8 years old boy and 13 years old girl) love riding with me on my 2015 Versys 650 LT. I feel safer now that I added the top box with a back rest for them. I also added a Sena headset to their helmet so I can more easily communicate with them while riding. We also wear earplugs and go on the freeway. I have 53,000 miles on my bike.

    I did, finally, 2 up riding with my wife and some luggage on my Versys 650. It's OK but certainly a 1000cc or at least 800cc engine will do better, you need to turn the throttle! However it was a confident ride. For the passenger comfort - my wife says that she needs an airhawk cushion or custom seat because it is hard after 1 hour riding...

    • @DorkintheRoad
      @DorkintheRoad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it about the passenger seat. There's not much there.

    Awesome vid. I generally respect most people's choice to where what little or as much bike kit as they like, but it boils my piss seeing a dad in full kit head to toe, and see their kid on the back in a tracky bottoms and a rain coat with a helmet too big for them, no boots or gloves. Well done on doing this the right way mate! :-)

    • @DorkintheRoad
      @DorkintheRoad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I 100 percent agree. I get very angry when I see people putting a child's safety at risk unnecessarily.

    Love your videos Sir Dork. Very safe and sensible rider. Just a quick question: Do you preload the shifter when changing up? I have the 650 in black. Beautiful bike

    • @DorkintheRoad
      @DorkintheRoad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't usually preload, no. Not like on purpose or anything, just because I've always done it that way. Thanks for watching!

    Did you say 400lbs for you and your daughter? If I may ask, how heavy are you then, and how tall? I'm 6'6, weigh 260lbs and worried if I should therefore pay more for the Versys 1000 as 650 will not cope well enough?

    Do you recommend of any good Kawasaki dealers in the Portland area that don't charge through the roof for an oil change?

    • @DorkintheRoad
