  • I crossed Kang-La Pass from Naar-Phu Valley down to Ngawal near Manang village. It was the first day of the festive season in Nepal, Dashain and Tihar.
On this section of the trek, I am now in the centre of Manang District. I walked to Manang slowly due to the extreme blisters I had accumulated from long-hours of walking in the last 18 days.
I get as much experience I can from the local people about the Mesokanto Pass, over Tilicho Lake towards Jomsom. There is no fear or doubts in my mind anymore. I am confident I would make it safe the next day. Cross the pass and arrive Jomsom the same day.
Seeing the glacial lake of Tilicho was such an over-whelming feeling. The lake was at an elevation of 4900m. Deep blue in colour, I was awed by its beauty in the cold calling of the night.
I knew a little about Mesokanto Pass during my planning phase so my initial plan was to reach the lake and get back down to Khangsar and up towards Thorang-La, as done by many trekkers. While I was in Manaslu section, I heard more about Mesokanto Pass. I knew it feasible this time of the year. It would also save me 2-3 days.
The only problem. I was alone. It didn't bothered me. I was long zoned-out.
    -
I had wanted to trek across Nepal since the days I went for my first trek in Langtang Valley and Gosaikund. As I did more studies on walks across the country, I came across the Great Himalayan Trail and it had been stuck in my mind ever since, 2015.
As I did more visual research, it was not possible for me to find a good record of somebody who had done it. I had read alot of journals and stories but videos were very hard to find.
My plan was to film as much as possible with regard to my safety on the trail as I would be alone most of the time. I didn't know how I would make the story but filming the most out of the trail was my only idea. I wanted to document the trek.
The idea of narrating came during the editing process...

    One hell of a journey.
Looking forward to some years down the line, to complete the entire length of the Great Himalayan Trail. Til then enjoy the journey I have taken in autumn of 2017.
Gorkha to Mugu - The high route of the Great Himalayan Trail.
and includes 3 more treks on different parts of Nepal.
    -
Already planning on so many treks that has yet to be done across Nepal.

This is me narrating for the first time.
Bare with me along the journey.
Your feedback will be of great progressive tool.
    Thank you.

Oh man - everytime you're saying "It's getting very cold" it feels like you mean "I feel very alone and small here right now" and I can really feel with you. Had the exact same weather up on the lake in Spring 2014 when I was camping there alone. Had to return from Mesokanto La due to so much snow it would have been wrong to proceed. But, man, your timetable is CRAZY, what a trekking beast you are. Insane, mate. This video is just amazing and I wish you so many more happy hours out there, please stay safe! Best from Germany, Max

sounds like you'd great adventure as well. Mesokanto is one remote pass, the scree before reaching the pass and the steep descent after the pass, as you described in frozen ice is defo CRAZY!!! However, I have seen people descend in snow conditions, it looks fun.
Thank you for the well wishes man. You as well, make great adventure, take care and safe!! 🇳🇵

Just found your channel... You make some of the best backpacking videos on TH-cam man... Your editing is on point, you have a good balance of natural scenery and local culture, your a great narrator, you don't blare overpowering music in the background the whole time and your an overall likable dude... I hope you get some more subs and most of all I hope you keep on traveling the world and making these videos.. These will be great to look back on and show your kids/nieces/nephews/grandkids some day...

I'm sure I have seen some old huts on the way down from Mesokanto La but please don't quote me on this. This was back in '17 n I vaguely remember where exactly.
Do you have access to an updated map which you can use to track the trail n maybe trace a settlement. I know not much of a help here but I wish you all the best brother. Walk the trail n stay safe 🤙

Yes, Yak Kharka n Kaisang has hotels. There is hotel at tilicho Basecamp as well and a small teahouse at the lake viewpoint, 5100m. Check this at Tilicho Basecamp.

Hey brother respect did it with a friend in 2003 it was awesome. Had to camp at 5500ish at the far end of the lake before the final climb to the pass. Got up the M pass thought it was finished only to find the steep track down covered in ice. Scarey Scarey stuff, Respect man

Thanks John, back then it must have been so remote, so pristine, untouched and wild. On this journey, ss I neared the pass, I saw 2 people and a tent at the far end of the lake. It was almost 10am and they had not made any sign of packing up so I guessed they would stay further or were climbing Tilicho itself. Camping must be great, I had initially planned so but I arrived the lake late and the weather deteriorated so I took shelter at the tea-shop. The short steep trail beyond the pass is treacherous, I don't know how you 👣 on frozen trail. For me, the scree beneath were all glued together from the cold earth. There was no ice and yet a tough walk. Then the trail leading to Jomsom is never ending. Your body gets tired to a point you don't feel any pain. All that remains is your state of mind. To continue walking or to not. An amazing adventure it is all together. Solo or with friends.

@@MANAVENTURES HI Strange I have just re watched your video and just noticed your reply three years later! As you see this trek has special place in my heart and I have done a few. It certainly was pristine as you put it. The landslide area have handrails now I noticed it never did. It was very scary in places but you did get used to it. There was just one building at Basecamp at the time. The Tea Shop was a recent build but only open till Midday, there was no possibility of staying as it was shut when I arrived about 4pm. I had no choice but to climb up and over the ridge running down the right of the lake as you did. I was terrified when the path disappeared and found myself on a very steep ridge circumnavigating the col. There were no poles or signposts and I wasn't completely lost thinking " What the hell am I doing here" I then saw the glacier which has definitely receded since then, it was stunningly beautiful. Camping on rocks in the middle of nowhere at 5000 and something was not fun, in the -25C wind my face froze at at least some of it. Made me laugh when you cant talk in your film. I have a video somewhere Ill have to dig it out. Mesochanto was a wonderful focus point and then bang steep ice covered trail with no crampons, not nice. Very scary again! Then the endless trek to Jomson which sucks every last grain of energy and destroys your soul. I remember not being able to walk when i got to Jomson. Id just crossed from Jomson over Thorung La Pass then wrong way and the previous week did the Everest Khali Patar. Tilichio will always remain special, isolated, remote, scary and insanely beautiful. A real hidden Diamond!

I have enjoyed the series, as well as your narrative. Can't wait to see the upcoming installments. Your solo trekking in the Naar-Phu Valley and over Mesokantu La was very interesting and informative, albeit a bit risky.
I can only assume that you have Nepali citizenship to be able to trek in Tsum, Manaslu, and Naar-Phu without a guide.
    Well done!

Don't quote me on this but I reckon during high seasons which is Apr/May and Sep/Oct. I was there in early October. It's basically a teashop. What people do is stay at the Basecamp hotels and make an early morning hike to Tilicho for sunrise or whatever. This teashop is particularly aimed at these trekkers. It's not for making camps. However, if required and agreed upon can hold a handful of people inside. Protected from the elements. One must also note that this is located at 5000m approx. and what you get is basic. I believe it's operated by one of the hotel owners back in Tilicho Basecamp. This was back in 2017. Things might have changed.
Good luck with your ventures. It's a beautiful place.

Is it possible to trek tilicho bace camp to jomsom through tilicho lake and misokantala pass with in a day?
can we do it if we star early? any suggestion would be appreciated. thanks in advance

it all depends on your pace bro. If you are doing a marathon run then of course you can traverse that in a day depending on how good your navigating skill is. But I wouldn't recommend you do this beautiful trek in a day from Tilicho Basecamp to Jomsom. Never. WHY such a rush?? Enjoy the journey mate. Basecamp to the lake is probably 3-4hrs at Max. A good idea is to sleep in the tea-shop near the lake which is open in season and might allow you to sleep as well. Food and sleep Is basic. Then again, the trek to Jomsom even from the lake itself is a long way man. I definitely wouldn't recommend such traverse unless you are sure of what you are doing ✌️

@@shantvid the tea-shop is run by one of the hotel owner from Basecamp, as far as I know. You will have to ask at bascamp hotels once you reach there. I can't guarantee but I would yes for 10 people, maybe. Sleep tight and warm. Take lots of warm clothes and a sleeping bag if possible. Keep altitude in mind. Also have a map. Enjoy and have fun. Not to rush.

I really find English accent of a lot of Nepali people hard to digest.. and some expressions a bit unnatural.
