Part Two of a three part series from our 35 day trek through the Nepal Himalaya. In part one we trekked the Manaslu Circuit ( • Manaslu Circuit Trek, ... ) from Arughat to Dharapani, where we join the Annapurna Circuit at the start of this video.
The Annapurna Circuit is a classic multi-day Nepal trek, traditionally starting in Besisahar, crossing the 5416m Thorong La, and ending around 3 weeks later in Beni, Nayapul or Phedi. In this video we trek from Dharapani to Kagbeni, where we join the Upper Mustang trek (part 3 - • Upper Mustang Trek, Nepal ).
After a bit too much trekking on roads for our liking between Dharapani and Dhukur Pokhari, the Annapurna Circuit really starts to WOW us from Upper Pisang all the way to Kagbeni. Keen to avoid the road, we take the New Annapurna Trekking Trails (NATT) via Ghyaru and Ngawal on the way to Manang, one of the most spectacular sections of the trek. After a freezing cold morning crossing the Thorong La (-11 degrees plus extreme wind chill!), we continue on the NATT trail from Muktinath to Kagbeni via the Sakya Buddhist villages of Chongur, Jhong and Putak, another highlight of the Annapurna Circuit for us.
Reaching Kagbeni, we find ourselves smitten with this wonderfully atmospheric medieval village, at the crossroads of four historic trade routes and picturesquely sat on the banks of the mighty Kali Gandaki river.

@@lukasf.1381 We went Manaslu - Naar-Pho - AC over Tilicho - ABC in 2009. Naar-Pho is amazing, just next to the too popular AC, now overrun by the Nepalis.

Another stunning video - and such high production values - really impressive! Thanks for showing how the trek looks now. I did this trek in 1992 (!) - without the road, it was literally done as a 21 day "circuit" starting way down in Besisahar, over the pass and down the other side pretty much to Pokhara! There was one shower on the whole trek - surprisingly at Muktinath - a public hot shower you paid for by the 5 minutes, which raised money for the local community - they had a water turbine to generate electricity. Isn't Kagbeni a jewel?
Oh wow, such a different experience! I bet that shower felt so good after crossing the Thorong La. We loved Kagbeni, a real jewel indeed. We stayed 3 nights there in the end, enjoying just wandering the streets and people watching. It's so surprising how different two places can be, just a couple of hours walk from each other. We've enjoyed reading up on the history of the region since.

Cool! The trek up by Ngawal was one of our very favourite days, absolutely stunning! We trekked to ABC twice before in 2010/2012 and visited Poon Hill and Chhomrong then, also very nice. Hope you can make it back to Nepal next year!

Really enjoyed the way you guys have captured your trek. I did this trek in 1999 which was then known as 21 days trek starting from Besisahar and ending at Baglung. Fascinating to see how trekking routes have been shaped up in Nepal. Mero Collection.
Thanks! Wow, yeah the trekking route and experience must have changed a lot since 1999. We did our first trek in the Annapurna region in 2010 and the changes even since then are notable. Have you returned to trek again in Nepal since '99?
@@GoingTheWholeHogg unfortunately no, late 90s been some interesting period for me in terms of trekking. Having completed Everest basecamp, ABC and its region like Poon hill and also parts of lower Dolpo but than the political turmoil hampered Nepal so badly. Anyway I am looking forward to trailing Mustang in September 2024 and Manaslu following year. I have been watching your videos very closely and loving it. Thanks for the hard work.

I know, feels strange for us to be editing this video and writing about trekking in the mountains, when in reality we are indoors all day for weeks on end : / But, glad you enjoyed taking a little journey to the Himalaya with us! We organised the full trek (Manaslu/Annapurna/Upper Mustang) through a guide who we trekked with in 2010 and has since started his own company. But actually, you don't have to have a guide for the Annapurna Circuit, just for Manaslu and Upper Mustang.
Going The Whole Hogg I have added this destination to my travel list, for the day when we will be free to live our passions again!

Thanks! Actually, it'll be out later today : ) We're just finishing up the accompanying itinerary and will publish them together. The complete trekking guide will be out on the blog next week too. Some absolutely outstanding views. Would have appreciated it more if there wasn’t so much quick cutting. But then it may be just being old, which I am fairly - but you hardly get to see a nice view before it cuts to something else.

Hey I also plan trekking to Annapurna Circuit in end of year. Did you treeking after the winter in April 2020? Did you hire porter/guide?
Hey, cool, you'll love it I'm sure! We trekked in October time. We had a guide because we were also trekking the Manaslu Circuit before and Upper Mustang after, and you need a guide for both of those treks so we just kept the same one for the whole time. But you don't have to trek with a guide if you don't want to. We carried our own bags. It's also possible to hire a porter-guide. We've got an extra night to use up, so debating whether to spend it in Ngawal or Kagbeni. We're doing the higher road anyhow via upper Pisang but not sure whether to stop off at Dhikur Pokhari for the night like you did or continue up to Pisang. Kagbeni looks beautiful so thinking it might be worth the extra day there. What do you think?
Ngawal was nice but if you have to choose, we would probably recommend to stay in Kagbeni instead as there’s more to explore around the town. The views from Ngawal are great but you’ll get those anyway when you pass through. We stopped in Dhukur Pokhari cause we had time and felt like a bit more of a rest soon after finishing the Manaslu Circuit, but if you have time it’s probably best to continue on to Upper Pisang, especially if not staying in Ngawal. That way you’ll have less distance to cover to get to Manang. Hope that helps 🙂

I'm planning to trek Annapurna Circuit in April. As you have already mentioned from chame to pisang it's a road and not a proper trail. Im thinking of starting the trek from Manang? Would it be wise to start from Manang so that I can save the first two days and I can add tilicho lake in my itinerary for those days?
Hi Sourav, while this idea works in theory, in reality I wouldn't recommend it as Manang is already at over 3500m and you very much increase the risk of altitude sickness by starting here. It's better to start at lower altitude so that you can acclimatise properly. Also, the NATT route via Upper Pisang and Ngawal on the way to Manang is very beautiful and almost completely off-road. It would be a shame to miss this. Hope this helps with the itinerary planning. Is there anything like this in the USA?
Well, we haven't been hiking in the US so not sure if there's anything to compare scenery wise but there are certainly plenty of long distance hiking trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail and so on.
which was your best base camp trek so far ? every place has its own beauty but which one did u like the most ??
Interesting question. As far as actual base camp treks go, Annapurna Base Camp has a special place in our memory. It really is spectacular, like an amphitheater but surrounded by mountains. And actually, we recently found Everest Base Camp to be very impressive, both in terms of location and in terms of human logistics and ingenuity. Do you have a favourite?

If you want to compare between Manaslu and upper Mustang treks, which route is the most enjoyable?
I would say overall Manaslu is the most enjoyable. Upper Mustang is very beautiful but has more road walking sections than Manaslu, and less variety of scenery. There are interesting cultural aspects on both treks. Hope this helps with your decision!

What was the exact dates of your trekking around Annapurna circuit ?
We trekked there in the second half of October 2018
Did you bump into many solo trekkers. I would hate to be in a rush with a group.
Yeah, plenty of solo trekkers, or some in pairs. Definitely a mix of bigger groups and individuals on this one. Overnighting in less common villages helps to avoid crowds on the trail.

Thanks! Yes, we enjoyed this trek very much (apart from the roads!). We did have a guide, same person from our Manaslu and Upper Mustang treks. Although we didn't really need one for this trek, but we stayed together for the full 35 days anyway.
