@@ddf5878 nope unfortunately, Goliath grouper are endangered, you can't even pull it on the boat legally. Just gotta cut the line (we use hooks that dissolve after a week). I've heard they're full of parasitic worms anyways so you wouldn't even want to.

I have a bud that has an ultra. The only thing I don’t like about it is the live wells. Sometimes the skiff is really hard to control when they are full.

They're also quite bright. Becoming "Pets" of scuba divers on long term projects. Plenty of "dumber" fish to catch. Sigh
Grouper dive and take on water which makes them extremely heavy and hard as heckfire to reel in.
His pole didn't break in half It broke ¾ of it off
His drag was set improperly. Caught a 6ft sturgeon on a surf cast rod. Took a while but brought it in. Still have the rod 20 years later
Goliath grouper pull much harder and will try to break you off in structure, so a heavy drag is required

When you expect a 100 pounder fish and you got a 300 pounder fish.
My father in law used to work on an offshore oil rig (up until about 2 years ago) and on their down time they fished. They were about 100 miles out and he was fishing from the lower platform about 25 feet off the waters surface. He caught a grouper this size I think he said about 200 pounds or so and it took him plus 5 or 6 other guys to get it reeked in and up to the platform. He had it processed and brought home and we ate on that thing for weeks. Delicious.
I thought giant grouper was illegal to land.

Its rare a rod will snap like that even reeling a 500 pounds Marlin. He needs to buy a reasonable sea fishing rod matching his intended line pounds specification, and set his line tension not exceeding the max. So no matter how huge the fish and its pull, the line will never exceed the max tension.

This is why you don't bring the rod up past 45°. That's the danger zone when a big fish decides to pull line. Keep it at 45° or lower, 30° being ideal.
You know the string is good when the rod breaks before it does.
