We spent Chinese New Year in Guangzhou, and wow-this was an experience we’ll never forget. We had heard mixed things about visiting China during Spring Festival as tourists, so we did what we do best-hit the streets to see for ourselves!
The breathtaking flower markets and the mesmerizing lantern displays lighting up Yuexiu Park made the city feel like a dream. We even tried some unexpected festival snacks (some delicious, some… questionable 😂). As the night went on, we attempted to find the perfect fireworks spot on Shamian Island-spoiler alert: we had no idea we needed reservations. But in true Mike and Ashley fashion, we made the most of it, soaking in the energy, celebrating with locals, and finally catching the sky light up in the most unexpected way.
This was more than just a celebration-it was a reminder of what Chinese New Year is all about: family, tradition, and embracing the moment. We’re so grateful to have experienced this festival firsthand, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Guangzhou is a famous food capital, and there are many delicacies not to be missed.
First of all, it has to be the Yǐnchá culture of Guangdong,
shrimp dumplings ，Sho mai，and red rice Steam roll are must try.
Followed by the famous barbecued pork, roasted pigeon, roasted goose, roasted pork belly, and claypot rice, and desserts have many different sweet soups, such as one called Mango Pomelo Sago （yáng zhī gān lù）is a sweet soup made from mango and grapefruit.
Wow, thank you for your generosity and the food recommendations! We’ll definitely try those. The food in Guangzhou has been so good. 🥰
In YinCha's place, there is a type called pineapple barbecued pork buns, and Cantonese Congee, both of which are worth trying, and if you want to challenge, you can try the chicken feet pork ribs.
Also, wonton noodles and rice noodles, which both are local specialties.

the tangerine on the tanghulu is a kumquat! it's kind of a snack fruit we usually eat around new years. It also has some medicinal properties, good for coughs etc!

I was in Guangzhou last year over Lunar new year and it was amazing, I loved the weather flowers and all the decorations
one of my favorite things are the many many parks and Shamian Island, also the food and traditional buildings - I'm not someone that enjoys cities and many people but in this city you can have both find quiet spots in the outer districts of the city
We also don't prefer cities! China is changing that. Though, we really do want to get out and explore more than just the cities here. We'd love to see more of the natural beauty and the smaller towns.
Guangzhou is an amazing place to experience the New Year. We have a proper travel video coming out from here later on and we were actually able to get to Shamian Island. It's so BEAUTIFUL! Honestly, this whole city is just a vibe.

As a Chinese guy living in the US for 10 years, it's really heart warming to follow your videos across China and see all your bold adventures. I love the positive energy you send out. I also admire that you are really trying to immerse yourselves in authentic Chinese culture and food instead of just a slight touch on the surface of it. Great job!
Not sure if you are going to Nanjing during this trip, but it's a wonderful city you can't miss (and not rated by a lot of foreign visitors yet). Would love to give recommendations if you need.

@@mikeandashley I assume you must have planned for places like Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleam and Confucius temple.
If you are going around late February - early March, def drop by Plum Blossom Hill right next to Ming Xiaoling at its peak. You may consider putting them together with Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum for a full-day trip.
Confucius temple is better at night with lights lit up. You can also take a boat ride along the Qinhuai river at night too. If Confucius temple is too crowded and touristy, try Lao Men Dong (老门东) next to it. It has some pretty good street food there: shaobing from 小郑酥烧饼，beef pot stickers from 蒋有记.
Xuanwu Lake is more local/residential than breathtaking. Would be nice to talk along on a lazy sunny day. You can also climb up the city wall (entrance near Jiefang Gate) and oversee the lake, Jiming temple and the city skyline.
One thing I would def recommend if you have more free time is the Foding Palace/Pagoda at Niushou Mountain. I went there last year for the first time and was blown away by it. Make sure you don't miss the underground section which is gorgeous.
If I may recommend one more thing, Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre. It holds a traumatic memory of Nanjingnese and all Chinese people. You''ll realize what price the world had paid for the peace we live in today.
Maybe this is overwhelming, but I feel that there's too much I haven't talked about... I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and look forward to more videos!!
