I love the fact that you dont wear latex gloves when you work. I see so many video's on here where people are doing mundane everyday things, and they are wearing gloves. Getting greasy and dirty is half the fun of doing projects. I bought a series 90 Paramount in 1992. Blue velvet gas color (a very wild purplish color). 32 years later i still have it. Its in fabulous shape, and still gets ridden. Love your results with this project.
So I got on my first MTN bike in 1989. In the early 90’s the Schwinn Paramount was the premier MTB that I could not afford! I used to drool over that bike. Awesom.
That is the whole idea of a build like that. Mix and match to see what works and what doesn't. I call it a "velcro" build....throw stuff at it, see what sticks! Fun build. Thanks for another great video!
Few things are more satisfying than a headset being regreased….well hubs being rebuilt are awesome. I really enjoy a well loved bike being cleaned/tuned up, it feels like it is now the ultimate sleeper ride.
ever since I watched your video 2 years ago I bought a used neglected no famous brand dusty and rusty bike, washed, cleaned and lubed part by part I replaced the Suntour fork with a rigid and enjoyed it, then bought a used dirt jump bike frame and another used bike to get parts for the DJ , I was inspired by your Specialized DJ bike build. Thanks a lot for giving great ideas and wishing you the best.
If I had two nickels for every pair of Oury grips I’ve watched you install… Seriously, Sunday mornings, coffee and an Oldshovel video starts my day right! Thanks for more great content, Rob! P.S. - my ‘87 Schwinn Circuit likes that white Turbo saddle.
I just love the part when you open the drawers and boxes chock full of parts - a mechanic's dream. I unfortunately live in an apartment with a small cellar where my small bike parts shoe box competes with the rest of the family's stuff. Ahhh how I miss the full garage where one can just sprawl out. Thanks again for the great video
This was really nice to see this bike rescued and on the trails again. I've been a fan of Schwinn since the early 60's, was never able to afford a Paramount, but now days I have a 22 Series and love it , just like the ride better than a carbon fiber. I'm still looking for an older MTB , I'll find it .
I had a Paramount back in '91. Great bike with all Shimano XT, Manitou front suspension, Smoke rear tire, Porcupine front tire. Also had Shimano SPD pedals that I busted my butt with several times early on.
Dude, I've got a Paramount that I bought in the late 80's. I haven't riden it in probably over 25 years, and it's been sitting, but it's still in good shape. Mine's a road bike, and I'm getting it back on the road. I like that you didn't mess with the old paint. Looks awesome. Yeah. Peace
Brings back memories of my Paramount PDG 90 with a gorgeous red, white, and blue frame, and a Marzocchi suspension fork, my first suspension equipped bike. It was a great bike but the seatpost seized in the frame (my fault for never greasing the seatpost), and an aggressive last-ditch effort to unseize the seatpost toasted the frame sadly. Nice to see you bring a PDG back to life.
heyyyy Simplisafe!! There you go moving on to the big sponsors, cool to see your channel grow. More cash bigger projects- the more we are rewarded! Yay!
This channel inspired me to restore a 1989 specialized hard rock it was such a fun build and is super fun to ride . love your videos old shovel! good luck with your future builds!
I’ve put a ton of miles on a drivetrain just like that. I gave it to a friend on a bike so he could get out and ride. It was an X9 type 1, shifter and 11-42. It really is a great range for MTB.
Awesome job once again. My first mtb was a 1991 Schwinn High Sierra w/ a paint job that was opposite of that, red w/ black splattered. That bike got me hooked
I had the same sierra. Bombed around sacramento to with it. Went to nm and got dropped out the back of a farm truck and kept on rolling. Kicked up chain stay lowered center of gravity a bit, dont know if it helped
Loved it ! Ride all day and not worry about getting dirty ! Glad to see you picked up a sponsor. I'm sure you've laid out a lot of $ from your own pocket. 👍👍👍
Another wonderful restoration! So evocative the final clip! Just amazing whatever you do! Great! You make all things with all your soul! Congratulations!
Tiagra shifters from 4700 series are not compatible with other rear derailleur. I had the same with road shifters from 4700 and 105 derailleur. When i use ultegra shifters all working ok. There is a different string pulling between them.
I just finished a 90's road bike which I grabbed from a hard rubbish collection. A thorough clean and lube, tires and tubes and a new/old derailleur and it's good as gold. Bikes are like cockroaches 😂
Ah, square tapered cranks, where, on occasion, I'd space out and install them both pointing in the same direction. Love seeing the old parts, brings back memories of my bikes in the late 80s and 90s.
If you put the cranks in the same direction, put SPDs on and pedal in a most curious hopping motion, you get an awesome workout for your lower abdominal muscles. And some very funny looks....
Appears to be a Reynolds 853 Nevada City. That’s a tough one on what to do with it. Clean it up and ride it is the obvious, but not so exciting for a video. Not quite “racey” enough to justify a retromod build with a new groupset. Could do a flat bar roadie. Or a touring setup for bikepacking
Hermoso trabajo!! Consultas: No quedó el sillin por arriba del nivel del manillar? A los cables de acero le aplica lubricante? Cómo se llama el tema musical del final? Gracias!!!!
Boom! The good ole schwinn before the cheap overseas mass production happened.... I built a bike or 2 that probably cost me $800 in frame and parts that you can now buy better new for $399!!!
Awesome build Oldshovel ...nice attitude ...sometimes it don't have to be pretty , it just has to work properly ! Love that ! To the shifter situation most Sram have printed on the cage of the derailleur the shift ratio ... if it's 1:1 then it needs a Sram shifter because they build also deraileurs and shifter compatible to shimano parts but those have a different actuation rate . Well done mate ! I just was confused that you din't do a paint job on this xD but maybe in the future ...who knows ! Can't wait for the next video !
I knew when I installed it that it would be a little off but was hoping it would be “close enough” but it was really not close at all. It was fun to try though.
@@oldshovel Yeah I can totaly understand that ! But it's the same struggle with the older 6-8 gear derailleur those have only about 1mm play on the upper pulley and that's why they don't work with 9 and up but I always modify them to 9 what is very easy to do, and because I personaly love the look of the older derailleur.
The actuation is different between Sram and Shimano. Shimano is 1 to 1 while Sram is 1 to 2. That's why the shifter didn't work. I love your videos and that there is another old guy who loves reviving old 26er MTB bikes like myself.
Great vid and a very big fan of what you do. 👍👍👍 The rust damn coming out of the frame wasn’t optimal but when the dust stops spray oil inside and also in the small holes where possible in the frame just to stop even more corrosion and hopefully it will last for many more years 👍👍👍
The are old used ones I picked up at the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective. They are really similar in function to the old parallel push Shimano xt and street brakes. They work really well also. I actually did not know they’re until I found them at the Bicycle Collective.
I'm on a older Novara chromoly mtb with a dirt jump ridged fork flat VP pedals short pivot stem and nice bar with rise looking to 1 by it not sure to go to 1x10 or 1x9 it it will fit my Shimano silent clutch hub on Araya rims with nipple supports
That bike came out nice indeed 👌, I was however thinking that it wouldn't work with the Tiagra shifter and SRAM derailleur but I'm super stoked about the build regardless, very good job and I live the channel. Keep it up
I have an old Diamondback Ascent frame that shows some surface rust similar to your Schwinn. Any thoughts about rust treating the Schwinn or is it not a big deal? Thinking about Eastwood’s rust encapsulator system.
I'm wondering the same. I reckon mr oldshovel isn't phased since the frame is Cr-Mo (Chromium Molybdenum) which is somewhat rust resistant. Last week I bought a bike with a Cr-Mo frame in a bit worse shape regarding rust. Thinking I'll sand and use rust converter. Is your Ascent frame Cr-Mo too?
Rumple TrueTemper double butted. Will probably go with Eastwood rust encapsulator as it sounds more like what I need for surface rust. The by product is a black finish I believe and that’s fine as the frame paint is a swirling blue/black design.
Yeah unfortunately while cassettes and chains are pretty interchangeable you cannot usually use a Sram derailleur with a Shimano shifter and vice versa. The pulls and throws of the shifters and derailleur don't match well. The only exceptions I know about are Sram MRX shifters which are specifically designed to be used with Shimano derailleurs.
Great video, although that rear tire needs some work sitting better on the rear wheel or a different tire all together. A great looking bike though, thanks for sharing!
Was that an original USE suspension seatpost that you yanked out of that frame? If so why didn't you use it? I still have mine and it works well and is light as a popcorn fart.

„Parts bin“ is a bit of an understatement here. What a collection!
Tell tale sign of a true bike mechanic:They always line up the tire logo with the valve stem.🤣

The red white and blue paint job from the pdg 90 is what I had put on my custom Waterford built Schwinn Paramount OS. That paint job was gorgeous.

great buil again, btw. Sram and Shimano have different actuation, you can mix em only when using front shifter and mech.
Lol I know. I knew it would be at least a little off and was curious to see if it would be sufficient… it wasn’t.
great video as always wondering why you make some of your bikes 10 speeds i can never understand the higher speeds and lower speed bikes
Lol yep. I wondered if anyone would notice that. I picked it up at the same time I got the Paramount frame. I’m still debating what to do with it.

For those wondering, the SRAM X9 uses a 1:1 pull ratio, which makes it incompatible with Shimano shifters. I also learned this the hard way hahaha!
bike's a beauty sir
Thanks
Hi! Was that a 1"threaded headset converted to 1 1/8" threadless? I asked because at the beginning of the video the quill stem was hanged.
What would you say are some specialty toools that you use quite often?

Great job again bud, i really love you vids you really do prove that no matter what age or condition any bike can have new life 👍🚴♂️👌
Good call on the white saddle.👌🏻
As you know just love the rat builds
Really enjoy these videos. Keep it up.

Great video by the way
End caps inside the grips. The nickels are the perfect size.

Do you dilute the Simple Green when spraying the frame?
Я так смотрю, у вас с запчастями полный порядок))).
