People who are funny in the military actually are a big help, When I was in the military we had some bad days but we had those guys who were funny man they made sure we kept our morale up even though we were in the s***.
@25:07 SCTV legend and one of John Candy’s old homies, Joe Flaherty. He gave Marty the telegram in Back To The Future. He called Happy Gilmore a jackass in Happy Gilmore.
This was written as Cheech & Chong join The Army, but thankfully recast by Ivan Reitman before filming began. You can see why the jungle escape scenes were meant for the duo & why it was cut.
I watched it from the Start to the end 76-83. There are episodes & Clips on TH-cam. Being Canadian SCTV I think has been the greatest thing Canada has offered the world. John Candy, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Eugene Levy. Around the World everyone loves these performers. I was also obsessed with the MacKenize Brothers and their album & Strange Brew. I was on Younge Street in Toronto when They had their Parade for the Album. Jen should watch Strange Brew. @@rowenatulley852
This was filmed at Ft Knox, KY. I saw the movie when it came out, then went to Knox soon after for Basic Training in 1982. I remember recognizing places from the film. Most of those wooded barracks have been replaced with newer dorms since then
I've known a couple of Gex X armor and Cav vets they recognize Knox as it was. My enlisted Basic was at Sill and the training area is nothing like it was in the late 80s.
I finished Navy boot camp shortly before I saw this for the first time and was still going through advanced training and laughed my ass off. A number of things that came to mind for me: 1. PJ Soles is my "future ex-wife" Honeymoon only should work. 2. When men get their first haircuts, everyone looks like Ox and Cruiser. No exceptions. 3. There are always more than one DI per company. Meaning the scene where they go to graduation on their own wouldn't happen. 4. You can NOT put the pin back in the grenade. It's also highly unlikely the Captain would have access to live ammunition in his office since it needs to be accounted for. 5. Harold Ramis😇also directed "Caddyshack" and "Vacation". 6. The segment when they go to Mexico and drop acid wasn't in the original release.
Sgt. Hulka was portrayed by the late Warren Oates, one of the finest character actors in the business. I suggest giving the cult film "Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia" a try. As a former Navy man, the answer is yes. We in the military found the movie very funny. It's comedy after all.
The 80's had a string of '"Join Up" movies: 'Officer And A Gentleman', 'Stripes', 'Private Benjamin', 'Top Gun'. I've heard that films like this, even comedies help boost recruitment...
That's pretty much how I joined the army, the job I had at the time wasn't exactly kosher, and they hadn't paid me for over 60 hrs that week, so in a rage I walked in to the local recruitment office, not the greatest idea I've had, but not the worst.
Thanks for doing a reaction to this movie, Jen! 😁 Sorry I'm commenting so late, but I missed this one in my recommendations. Stripes was the second film in the trio of collaborations between Bill Murray and director Ivan Reitman, who most famously worked together on Ghostbusters in 1984 and its sequel. Their first collaboration was the summer camp comedy Meatballs from 1979, co-written by Harold Ramis, which I highly recommend if you get a chance to watch that. 😁
Three great '90s movies that nobody reacts to...consider Altman's takedown of Hollywood, The Player; the delightful comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral; and a fantasy with an amazing message, Pleasantville. Maybe put them on a poll and see what happens?
The scenes with the checkpoint guards are supposed to be subtitled. General rule of thumb is that if the majority of the movie is in English, and then there's a scene of two characters speaking a different language to each other, it should be subtitled. The occasional exception to this is if they're speaking to, or in front of a character who doesn't speak their language, and the audience is meant to share their confusion over what's being said. However, with some rare exceptions (like Laseblast), English movies don't generally include non-subtitled dialog in a different language when the non-English characters are alone with each other. Think about it: there's no point including a conversation that the audience probably won't understand, if it's not being done for the benefit of the story. It serves no purpose.
great film. I can't believe so many phrases and references stuck with me permanently from this movie. Regarding Army involvement, if you really want to understand the extent military support/editing you need to look at the recent documentary Theaters Of War.. it is deeply enlightening and a MUST for anyone into cinema. wow.. was watching a 'spicy' movie from around this time and it had the truck!!! Exact same looking and colour. I am now curious if it was from the movie, as I have never seen it outside this film
As messed up as it is this movie is the closest I can point to about my military career. It seemed that the whole USAF was trying to pull a prank on me about the lack of intelligence within the entire organization. It wasn't a prank.

Thanks for watching!
It’s not that hard to believe. There’s a few reactions to it already.
"They at least got their poop-in-a-group", the most TH-cam friendly work-around comment yet!

I loved this movie!! I saw in theatre. Bill Murray's career would be nowhere without Harold Ramis. RIP Harold! Loved you on SCTV!
I loved SCTV, but also Almost Live. Anyone remember THAT show?
I wish Joe flaherty had had a bigger role in this though
Dave Thomas too! Both of those guys and Andra Martin should have have been Stars. 6 of the 9 cast members became Hollywood Movie Stars. @@vincegamer

@@bretcantwell4921 Coincidence…I left Knox after Basic & went to Sill for AIT (I still remember that crappy 3.2 beer), then off to Germany…small world

In the Army there is NOT more than one DI per platoon. There is more than one Drill Sergeant. 😎

I was in the Army for seven years and find this movie to be hilarious.

Everyone but Harold Ramis and Bill Murray got buzz cuts, but none of those other actors knew that all of their hair was going to be shorn off.
Francis "Pyscho" didn't get a buzz cut either...

Strangely enough there is usually a spike in military enlistments after a film like this comes out.
I believe it haha thanks for watching!
I enjoyed the reaction as always Jen. Strangely I was never really a fan of this film when I first saw it but over the years it grew on me.

Great one, Jen! What a lot of fun.
Since you're a fan of John Candy, if you haven't seen it yet I highly recommend "Cool Runnings". It's one of his best roles.
It’s a great movie, but he’s not exactly funny in it. He’s kind of normal and funny happens around him. Still, you’re right, good role and good movie.

Pleasantville a million percent.
Funny movie, but the final resuce was really too silly for me. Had a great time with your reaction Jen :D
Haha yeah I honestly thought the movie was going to end with the graduation scene, thanks for watching!
Ayyy…nice mic 🎤 but it deserves a boom mic stand (adjusting) 👍🏼 cool reaction tho💯
Highly recommend Judge Reinhold starring movies Vice Versa, and Off Beat.

I just looked it up, and apparently this movie was filmed at Fort Knox.
The city at the beginning of the movie is Louisville KY, which is about 30 miles from Ft. Knox.
One of very favorite movies. I have it on DVD. 😊

I think Ghostbusters is the sequel to this movie. It's pretty much the same plot, with the same director, the same writer, and the same stars.
