Your buses do look outdated compared to the ones in Australia, however as mentioned who cares so long as it does its job.
I've taken public transit buses in at least three different countries, one of them my homeland (Canada). How buses look doesn't matter to me so much as long as they are functional and don't have too many steps to climb on board them. From at least the 2010s all buses and trams owned and operated by Toronto's public transit agency, the TTC, have been low-floor and fitted with wheelchair ramps. Buses I take don't have to be luxurious but do have to be mechanically sound, which they often are.
Yes, the companies do look after the buses and have their own mechanics. They have to as they demand a lot from there vehicles. Some in my depot run upto 21 hours in a day everyday, so all the maintenance and upkeep needs to be right on point otherwise there'll be breakdowns and service disruptions contently. All our buses here are low floor and can tilt to aid entrance, however our ramps are still hand operated sadly. We have had low floors since the late 90's and now are transitioning into 100% electric buses, to the point that from next year (2025) all new public transport buses will be electric in this state.
The streets here in North America look just as old too.
😆
Here in Maryland the roads are well maintained, can't be the only place.
I don't care what the Europeans think of our buses,
I do miss the Grumman's Flxible bus and the GMC's RTS buses from the 1980s
I officially got my CDL Class B w/ Passenger + School Bus. Passed my road test last weekend Thanks to this channel for the inspiration.
Congrats!
Way to go 👍
Congratulations!! Glad this channel offered some inspiration!! Thank you for watching!
Congratulations on your CDL license.
I love driving the Gilligs and New Flyer Xclesiors in my hometown of Madison, WI. I also went to other countries and rode their buses as well.
Gillig's problem is most of its competitors have left and Gillig is overwhelmed.
Yep, Neoplan, NABI, Orion, Flexible, TMC, MTS, and GMC have all lost interest or left the game altogether. Nova, ENC, and Proterras are all on their way out as well...
Quebecois will prop up their native Nova, rest of Canada probably New Flyer, more so in the west.
Well it has a Single Titan of a competitor the Canadian Giant: New Flyer Industries who have bought out most of their Competition
New Flyer buses do look more modern than the Gilligs, but they are alas, also more expensive.
Anyone noticed the ALL 2's of the bus number? 2222?
I feel like the current North America buses are modern enough, how ever I think making the dash and cluster more like European buses would make it more modern.
I think US Buses get to much hate they have many features that European buses don’t have. For example the bike racks on the front. The small amount of buses in Europe that have bike racks have them on the back and the design is very annoying you have to lift the front of your bike above your head and hang your bike on the back. The ramp in the front is really smart to most of the buses in Europe have the wheelchair ramp at the back door.
The back door is nearer to the wheelchair space on board though, but in my country this is slower as the driver has to go further away from his/her seat to help wheelchair-bound passengers board/alight , & the usual bus entrance can be opened to other passengers only after the wheelchair-bound passengers are done, otherwise the driver won't be able to check passengers for fare evasion. HK does put the ramp at the entrance instead however
Bike racks in the front are a big no-no in Europe because of pedestrian safety in case of an accident. I like buses, but not enough to be skewered by one.
I love buses from Europe, South Korea and Canada when I visit there.
"I got hit by a bike." "Oh dear, got a bit of a bruise?" "It was attached to the front of a bus."
Anyhow, I think that's quite a nice feature for cyclists who need to reach areas which aren't covered by public transport.
Bike racks on the front are not a knock on European buses but European bus operators. Those bike racks don’t come with the bus model and can be slapped onto the front of any bus. The ramp is a matter of preference, since I’m not a wheelchair user I don’t have a preference nor do I have experience to form an opinion.
After I moved to Indonesia, i realizer the American buses are kind of outdated. But it doesn't mean they're worse/inferior. Really, the bus is alright, yall just have to refresh the dashboard/drivers area
Commuter buses in Japan & S Korea look more old-school to me too IMO e.g. with grilles on windows & large slab-like turn & brake lights
One thing I will say for American buses, and trains, is that they look really sturdy. They look like they were built to last. Here in Europe buses have a relatively short lifespan. I liked using the public transport system in the States.
Looks likes something from the 1970s and 80s. To them I say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
then why did the car evolve? that worked too.
Our buses look good enough but i really do want a modern look. Can't wait to see how Solaris does in a few years.
I am from Australia and I give you full credit for taking a look at buses from other countries. You seem to have a good understanding of what passengers need in a bus and the problems you would run into if you had European style buses in America.
In Australia, our buses have a European and Asian influence. And I think the split front windscreen would not be allowed because of the blind spot it causes with the joint in the windscreen.
The BRT+ is a real good looking vehicle. It’s sleeker than the basic Gilligs we have here.
As a very experienced bus driver (20 years) and bus mechanic (15 years) I can compare the European Mercedes and Volvo buses/ I have been driving both coach and transit buses in Israel and Canada since 1981. I can say the drivers environment in European buses is a way friendly and high quality material used. Amazing design and very convenient to use by the driver versus American transit buses like a Nova and catastrophic New Flier. Our company has an old (2005) Van Hool (Belgian made) rapid transit buses and new (2009-2022) Nova and New Flier and I can admit (as a many drivers) to drive old Van Hool is much more easy then the current Canadian and American made vehicles.
Specially the New Flier - very bad designed drivers environment. All the important switches are located at the left blind area. Is impossible to see them during a driving. You must stop to operate those switches like a passenger AC/Heating control and dome light.
A two(!!!) windshield wiper switches located in blind area under steering wheel and operated each wiper (two halves of windshield) separately.
An American and Canadian bus designers never think about a hard working bus drivers and New Flyer completely no friendly to mechanics too. They are really designed in 60-70s and never changed!
Here I just counted very few problems but there exist many-many more!
I will be happy to get your reaction.
ALEXANDER BAR, TORONTO, CANADA
The older buses are usually better to drive and break down less often. Less electronics means less things to go wrong
The Euro buses are nice, but I prefer our "outdated" North American buses. I like the two piece windshield, and the driver area. I love that the park brake is easily accessible. It would be better if the fast idle switch was next to it. The interior may not be high tech, but that's all right. As long as I can reach everything, that's all I care about.
My 2014 44ft Volvo bus looks more advanced, inside and out. I'm a 35 year veteran busdriver from the Netherlands. Keep those videos coming, we love them 😊
Thanks for watching! I’m going to check out some Volvo buses on this channel soon!
Looks like around the same era as Leyland Olympian in the early 90's to me (just before Volvo acquired them)
(other than the LCD monitor & the kneeling functions)
I found your channel to be very helpful for a newby like me. I'll soon start training for the north county transit district in san diego, and I've never done a job like this or driven anything that big, it's pretty intimidating but I'll get through it, thanks
I like your channel logo; RTS bus, from the 1980s. Got to ride the last few, that Boston had in revenue service, several years back.
I miss them on NYC transit in the 90s growing up
I'll soon be riding the bus more often. My wife and I are moving to a senior living facility this weekend and will be selling one of our cars. I'll be using all the useful tips I've learned from you, thanks.
My hometown of Cleveland, OH got rid of their NABis so we mostly have Gillig BRT Plus CNGs and diesels. My wife's hometown in Columbus, OH are getting rid of their Gillig diesels so it's mostly gonna be Gillig LF CNGs, New Flyer XN40s and XE40s. I'm cool with some of the GCRTA bus operators in my hometown.
Now that is what I’m talking about. Finally the kneel and ramp are in the correct spot.
Yes!!
@@BusDriverLife Our switches are on the right side in front the fare box above the handset for RTT. Totally back breaking and I often fail to lower the bus. Your Gillig should be spec’d like that for all buses. It just makes sense.
The Scania K230UB in my country used to kneel automatcally ~5s after the exit doors open
Here in Victoria Canada we have both North American (mostly Nova Bus) and British (Alexander Dennis double deckers) with even a few Chinese imports (customised by Vicinity). As a tall passenger, I can usually find a seat that doesn't hurt my knees except for the Vicinities, which are truly awful. Can't speak for the driving experience - I'm just a lowly passenger. Nobody asks us what we would like either.
I don't think an American bus would be in Europe. In Singapore we have European buses and just recently I found that their console is a bit faulty because if you put your foot or hand in the wrong place, the buttons that you are not supposed to press will go off.
Oakland's AC Transit learned that European built Van Hool buses were junk compared to Gillig's.
I did notice recently that I do not see the Van pool bus anymore, the last time I seen it was in Union City going into Hayward on Hesperian BLVD.
I will say Gillig doesn't really modernize the look of their busses but they've done a great job updating internals
Track buses are never fancy as the public trashes them. My concern is you don't have a security screen, here in melbourne Australia we are enclosed behind a screen which makes it harder to get at us.
That's not because of the bus though. We have Gilligs and we have security screens installed from the factory
I kinda like the new "cluster switch" as you call it but I think the controls are upside-down.
The most commonly used switches which are is the kneeler should have been the top 2 buttons and all the ramp controls the bottom 3.
In my country the driver gets out of his seat, walks to the exit to manually unfold the wheelchair ramp instead
@@lzh4950
Sounds simple enough.
I love both UK and American buses builders❤.
Me too!
Hahah, love the self-deprecating remarks (that are actually a bit un-American), but above all: keep making videos, they're always interesting and usually funny ❤❤
The Wright Renown or the Cadet looks more modern than that. Like, I love the 90’s and 2000’s gillig buses but in the same way I love the Dennis Dart or the Plaxton pointer 2’s.
They are even more comfortable lol.
Those door controls would drive me mad, and the parking brake. Other than that and how thick the rim of the wheel is for being a 2-spoke. I think I'd like it as it has an engine not an electric motor. Also apart from the little LED lights, I'd say it has an 80s style to it. What gearbox does it have and which engine?
Yes I do love the new busses in Sacramento! I like all the controls together! And the handling of the bus is Amazing!
Good meeting you today on the 25 K.
@@michiganborn8303 Likewise!!!
I couldn't spot one in the video, do they have operator barrier screens or protective shields on the new buses for your system? Those seem to be almost standard on buses in many American cities now.
We currently don’t have protective barriers..but we are testing one so we should have them soon on all buses here in Sacramento, California.
@@BusDriverLife That's cool. Metro Transit here in Minneapolis went with the BenTech ones based on operator feedback from a few different models they trialed. They provide good coverage when closed, but can also be stored in an open position if the operator doesn't want to use.
2:14 Newer Volvos I've seen in Europe also have their dashboards be adjustable together with the steering wheel column, but those in my country don't, maybe to save money, while in some models there's an additional lighter-coloured trim piece along the windscreen that hugs & wraps around the driver's dashboard, holding it rigidly in place
Do passengers care if the bus looks nice on the inside vs the outside like coach buses do?
as someone in the uk its pretty clear why they get called outdated. we have 20 year old buses from dennis, volvo and others etc that look more modern, and ones that are 18, like the enviro 400, volvo powered geminis and eclipses, which are a lot more modern looking with more tech in the cab too
Something that needs to be updated is New Flyer XD40's
Also MCTS (Milwaukee County Transit System) just got some 2023 Gillig Advantage Low-Floors the 6300s. I can't Wait for them to get on the road, also I hope that you come out here and check out the 2023 Gillig Advantage Low-Floors, and the 2023-24 Nova Bus LFS-E+.
Showing love from Milwaukee, WI, Love the content.
Milwaukee stand up!! I really want to ride the new Novas that they have on the BRT line. I plan to visit Milwaukee soon! Thank you for watching!!
@@BusDriverLife Can't wait, I am sure you will love it. I met the one of the co-owners last week and she said that we are with Gillig until 2029. I think for the CN2 we will get an XDE40, or an XDE60. All I heard is that it will be an new flyer electric bus. MILWAUKEE STANDING UP!!!
Our buss in Dallas are outdated but the older ones drive the best for operators. The newer ones are smoother for passengers though but still look older lolololol I guess DART said ain’t no sense in having nothing fancy cause the passengers just trash the buses anyway and the operators drive it like a go cart instead of treating it like it’s their personal vehicle 😂😂😂 and yes the designers would definitely tell operators to stfu and drive the bus… just like the passengers tell us too.
most buses run today are models usually designed around the 2010's to 2000's.
not sure how it works in Europe but we tend to stick to models for a while (10 - 15 years) sometimes it gets as long as 20 - 25 years as with the GM New Look and RTS models hence why our buses look a bit "outdated" in comparison to European buses.
this particular model (Gillig BRT) was designed in 2003.
Depends on the country and the city in case of the urban mass transit. You can get very young fleets who replace the models every 10-15-20 years, and have the poorer/badly ran ones which are a hodgepodge of ancient buses plus whatever they managed to scrounge up in the meantime. Like Budapest mass transit (BKV), only managed to get rid of the ancient Ikarus 200 series buses in 2022, after about 50 years of service:
th-cam.com/video/qXgxz9hVnLg/w-d-xo.html
Their current fleet is a mishmash of younger Ikarus models (mostly from the 90s), Volvos bought in the 00s, and a mishmash of second hand buses they acquired whenever they could in the last ~ 20 years.
Is Sacramento too expensive for you to the point you can't live comfortably as a bus driver, or is it just right to live in?
As someone from the UK I've never been a fan of almost all buses in america having capitalised displays, while easier to read from a distance I think lowercase looks nicer
I do agree that even the newest buses there look outdated (the gillig low floor having a body from 1996), and modern buses like the NF xcelsior (2008-) and current nova bus also have older designs now if you think about it even though they may still look modern
Unrelated bonus: buses with law firm/injury attorney ads is completely abnormal here
I like the way European cars look, but I never liked the way European buses look.
Idk... if you check any videos of the new Solaris Urbino or you had an ability to drive one you'd change your opinion slightly on Gillig :)
the most important part: do you (the drivers) like your buses ? thats the important part. i think the buses look funcional and rugged. good qualities for work equipment. in my mind it is all about the priorities when ordering a bus-build.
Just a thought about the European driver's area vs. the US, would the Europeans have regulations with regards to the ergonomics of that area? I do agree though that American buses should have a refresh in design though
Those controls to the side are convient but are stiff and will wear and tear your finger's from pushing and holding them down and often for long periods.
The smaller steering wheels are easy on the back, arms and shoulder's and are easy to grip without gloves.
I see the seats have some sort of padding or cushion. Keep them bare or have somw "non-skid texture so that people won't easily slide out of their seats. The cushioned seats hold awful odor and "germs" and may not even be contracted for cleaning! People aren't on the buses for very long periods of time and many don't respect "luxury" anyway. Don't waste money. Just make sure that the driver is safe and confortable and the passenger's are reasonsonably given the same consideration's.
The most important thing is to have more buses and encourage more people to use them. Build dedicated lanes and entice people out of their cars.
We have some very buses in the UK, but over the years there have been many routes cut outside of big cities. It's no good having nice buses if they don't run where and when you want, and people go back into their cars!
I think European buses look funny call me old fashion lol I love Gilligs and New Flyers at my work place 😊 but the European and Australian buses I do admire
I completely agree! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've been retired from the transit business for 20 years. I miss the GMC new looks.
@@RonJohnsen-zw3xt Meh its is broke. The seats are rock hard in North America meanwhile in Europe we have much better seats.
@@Mgameing123It really depends on what seats the transit agency decides to install
@@riceexe We are talking about Brampton Transits Metal seats. The seats I know for buses are either Citaro seats or Civic V2’s
I have sat in some of the best seats (recliner seats on a C-Tran Commuter Gillig BRT) and the worst seats (Insight Prime on TriMet and C-Tran Gillig BRTs, Nova Bus LFS Arctic, and New Flyer Xcelsior)
That exhaust looks like it's about to go "aooogah"
No one has the right to call the Gillig an outdated bus until they've seen the Nova Bus. God damn piece of crap held the same design since the mid 90's with hardly any changes.
Gillig used to make school buses but not anymore. Another super video. Thanks Keywan. I give BDL a shout out in my Season 2 Finale. I am going on summer hiatus but plan to return for Season 3. Be well bro.
Who knew that when the brits get new busses you get are old ones. Cool.
The drivers area is your office space. Your in it all day. The employer has a duty to make it as good for you as his work space is.
Oh and about the split windscreen glass. That is a un-needed distraction when you got 50 kids onboard. Soon spaceships will have bigger glass windows than a US bus.
In Ottawa our double deckers use that exact Vapor cluster and drivers HATE them. Personally I prefer the New Flyer and Nova buses.
I rode on a VTA 2001 Gillig recent with fresh paint and a refreshed interior the bus would be incredibly difficult to age.
On the thumbnail, I'd gladly take that Orion 7.501 Next Generation CNG over whatever the fuck that double-decker trash is any day!!! We have those O7 NG CNGs at NICE too.
In some (European) buses, when a bus brakes, there's a sort of 'wewwwwwwww' in the background. What is this?
Love the 1970s radio
I miss your videos man! Welcome back! I live in Sacramento and have started taking the bus more in the hope I will one day see you lol
SacRT needs to have you as their spokesman!
Oh that’s cool! I’m all over the place so I’m sure we’ll see each other one day!
Can you do a video on labor relations? I work for a bus barn in the pacific northwest and its not a pleasant place to work where managment is concerned. Would like to hear howxit is where you are!
Can you do a video on how you make a sharp right turn
The USA has standards that the European manufacturers don’t have to meet. Like Michigan lights, the two part windscreen, the standard door, lights and emergency shutoff cluster on the side, etc. We also now have fewer manufacturers as mentioned by other commentators.
what does a two piece windshield have to do with this?
We are extremely behind those in the UK. We are always told how much better we are than the rest of the world. Sadly that isn't true. Hell our Dollar is worth their pound. £1=$1.30.
I like the musical zf in european buses pre 1985 Australia had some cool sounding zf in their European built buses MAN SL200 and volvo B58 artics a lot have been preserved too
I have a soft spot for the Phantom
They need to stop with the metal switches on the dashboard, those metal switches are old
Man we need those smaller steering wheel
Why is it that USA are so far behind in everything !! It's like Americans engineers like other Americans people knows nothing about what goes on outside USA
For example High speed trains got modern in 1960 and USA still don't have any !! And it's the same in every other area basically.
USA went from top dog to skid row, everything today are imported Americans on ly serve coffee hamburgers and the country are bankrupt . It's sad but it's a fact 😭
It’s also sad too because the US was really experimenting with futuristic Bus designs in the 70s. There were a couple of bus prototypes that would have been on par with the European buses at the time, but now America doesn’t even seem to care about futurism anymore. They just want to be stuck in the world of 1960s
They also did the same with trains too. The GM Aerotrain. The monorail(as kind of ridiculous it was)
2023 bus designed in 1923 by the looks of it and absolutely no comfort for the passengers judging by the look of the seats !
It would be a disaster if we had reclining coach seats on our city buses. 😆
You should react to British buses and their bells
The bus aint the issue, its the infrastructure that looks seriously outdated in the USA
I'd say the New Flyer Xcelisor looks the best especially on the exterior with the curved front and the lights, but the Nova Bus and Gillig do have a really outdated look with very ugly headlights
Disagree with the nova bus being outdated
@@mtasubwaymartasubway compare the front of a nova bus LFS with a xcelisor. I think you can tell just by the headlights that the xcelisor looks more modern. I get that interior matters too (and most interiors on american buses apart from the enviro 500mmc are dire with wires to stop the buses, concrete looking flooring [unlike wooden floors in the UK etc] and really ugly steps with bright yellow colours) but exteriors can really be off-putting and the circular lights and overtly curved nova bus LFS is just plain awful looking
@@Skibidilgbt1273 Yes the headlights are outdated, but the front of the nova bus looks fine
Of course buses may look modern but the likes of enviro 200s rattle like a Lego box, do American buses rattle?
