  • This is probably my favorite haunted spot in the City of Santa Clara. The history behind this INSANE ASYLUM runs deep within the community. Whether there are horror stories hidden within the ghosts of the past, we will never know. However, the overall history of AGNEWS INSANE ASYLUM is one of great esteem and praise of being innovative with treatment for mental health and amazing living conditions. The biggest recorded tragedy in Agnews happened during the Great San Francisco Earthquake that shook the Bay Area. The earthquake caused their great bell tower to collapse causing the death of over 100 patients and workers. It is still the largest death toll in a single tragedy recorded in Santa Clara to this day.
This area is no longer a mental institute, but a few of the buildings have been restored and protected as historic buildings. You can find them on what is now home to Oracle. #HappyHaunting! #HappyWandering! xx

My mom was a nurse here in the 80s and 90s when I was a kid. I have vivid memories of how creepy the place was even back then when it was in operation. Half of the campus was in ruins and abandoned. The cemetery was way creepier back then, overgrown with tall dead grass and seemingly forgotten. You could see some of the tombstones (it had tombstones back then) barely poking above the grass. Most of the land around the campus was just fields, giving it this isolating feeling. I remember the screams of mental patients echoing down the hallways. I remember being more fascinated than scared though. Then again, I've always liked creepy scary things, so maybe that's just me.

My sister is profoundly delayed, nonverbal and non-ambulatory. She lived at Agnews for years. My family and I would drive out to visit her most weekends. I recognize all the buildings you were in. The nursing staff that worked there seemed to do a good job and were kind and supportive for the most part with a few bad apples. Most of the residents that lived there were really sweet souls but were developmentally delayed with medical and mental health issues. Agnews stopped housing the criminally insane people there many years back. Anyway now my sister lives in a medical group home in Campbell and is doing well. The small group care homes seem to work better as opposed to the mass housing of patients. Anyway thanks so much for posting this history!!

Thank you so much for sharing your sister's and your experience there! The workers at the small museum told me that Agnews was a good mental hospital and took care of the people that lived there. It's nice to hear from an actual source that this is mainly true. Of course there are always a rotten apple or two, that's life. I am happy to hear your sister is doing well and I hope you have a wonderful 2022! Thank you so much for watching! xx

My mom was a patient there for some time in the late 70s. She was late-term pregnant with me while she was staying at Agnews. My sister says she remembers visiting my mom, & doctors giving our mom shock treatment while I was in utero, smh. I guess there wasn't a birthing unit at the hospital, so I ended up being born at O'Connor. I constantly had painful sinus & ear infections after being born, possibly from the electrodes..

The two story building where I had my office was just down the street from the Clock Tower Bldg. It was originally a Nurses Quarters Bldg, but was used for something else when I was there. I came in on a weekend to do some work when nobody else was around. Then something really unusual happened.@@WanderwithAwe

While I was in my office downs stairs, I heard banging noises in the abandoned upstairs part of the bldg. I tried to identify where the noises came from. I couldn't. It spooked me, so I left the bldg right away. I talked to other employees about it , and they were puzzled by the noises. Maybe it was ghosts or maybe it was something else. It's a mystery to this day.@@WanderwithAwe

I worked there from 1985 to 1991 way too much stuff to talk about but concerning the operation of a little girl that building was called the clock tower when I worked, an 85 was abandoned. I had a very strong curiosity and I went all over that tower looking for devious shit at old charts from the 60s and things of that nature I really didn’t find much the dental equipment the x-ray equipment is off from the 60s big and cumbersome long story short the building was completely sealed as I left the surgery room and I shut the door two seconds later I heard something slam for me and I ran after five seconds I stopped and turned around and the door slam so loud in front of my eyes that the first floor had a Jenner’s office janitor office they had the door they heard the door slam. They came upstairs because nobody should’ve been in the building and I saw that door slam twice not to shut but slam and I hid in the bathroom until the genders walk towards the door, closed it and then went back to the office and I ran out that building never went back until till five years later believe it or not

I knew a guy who worked graveyard there before it closed. He said it was weird because of people screaming and yelling.
    One lady bit his arm.
So he started covering their faces with a pillow when he’d rap them. He wonders about his kids sometimes….

Silicon valley tore down most of it but they restored some of it. I think the tech business sun-something runs out of the part of the hospital they salvaged. Its in Santa Clara near great America. Try looking for haunted places on this website called shadowlands. I used that for ghost hunting. It has every state and city in those states thay have activities that's been reported

Loved the Video. I'm an Electrical Contractor for Fire Life Safety for the Oracle Campus. I actually grew up down the street in the 80s and I can remember when it was still Agnew and not Sun Micro. Building 6 still has the original jail cell in the basement. I stumbled upon it during an inspection and was so cool. I have pictures as well. Let me know if you would like to have them or even look at it whenever I'm there. I have experienced on occasion at least 2 different spirits. The majority of the buildings are vacant, which adds to the spooky effect as im literally the only person walking thr halls haha.

    • @WanderwithAwe

Is building 6 part of the east or west wing? I wonder if that jail cell is still there and why would there be a jail cell at Agnews?!!! So many questions for the past! haha! xx

Are you talking about the abandoned portion of Agnews? If so, I had no desire to go there since it is trespassing... lolz, so I did the safe thing and showed the historic buildings and the museum that depicted the history of the Asylum. There are plenty of videos of people doing the abandoned portion...however, I don't know if it is still there since the city has been meaning to clean it up for some time now to build a school or something.
