There's a chilling (and very graphic), chapter in Seabiscuit that describes the life of a jockey. You never forget that stuff and what they have to do to keep themselves at the weight to ride these horses.
@@ritawing1064Honestly I hope in my lifetime that this “sport” is banned. Horses are raced before their bones are even finished growing and given all types of drugs all for people to make money.
Gotta agree with Dr. Charles at the end. When the athlete has too much stars in his eyes to see the big picture it’s the doctor’s job to sit him down and force him to take care of his body.
This actually is true a lot of Jockeys have eating disorders . because they can't be over like 120 lbs because it slows the horse down during the race even if how rhey ride tries put little of there weight in the horse.
As an equestrian, it’s true with performance drugs for either horses and people. We are a small community and everything spreads around like wildfire. Especially when it comes to the weight of the riders, we want to make sure we don’t want to strain the horse by making them carry more weight than they have too. Horses can carry 15-20% of our body weight plus riding tack. If more weight is added, they can get sore muscles and rubs on the saddle-where you sit on the horse . But if it happens for a longer period, they can get sway back and joint issues and arthritis. With thoroughbreds, yes, they are bred to race but they can get injured pretty badly even if you don’t race. That jockey didn’t care about the horse, he only cared about his titles and that’s why this sport is called “the sport of kings”.
Maybe reword that... "Let's normalize DISCUSSING and HELPING men with eating disorders." It may be common to see someone with an ED, but that doesn't make it normal.
This is precisely why doctors can't put their personal feelings in with professional work environments. I say treat the man for what happened discharge him, and if he dies its not on you because you tried helping them, and they refused. By refusing, they denied medical help and caused his body to die of his own free will. Doctors have an oath sure but it doesn't mean going against patient wishes without consent
I don’t care about that jockey one bit. Anybody apart of the horse racing, steeplechasing or harness racing industry is a disgusting individual supporting the deaths of 10,000 horses worldwide EVERY DAMN YEAR.

Will should have gotten fired and his license taken away the first season of this show. And Ethan… he just thinks HE always knows best and is never wrong. They both drive me out of my mind.

My thought exactly! Good call and memory…FYI Daley Jones from the Monkees was a jockey as well..small stature
It's a lot harder on the horses: hundreds die in this horrible trade, thousands go to slaughter for not making the grade.

When no one in the writers room has ever been a serious athlete.
