  • Mary Timony on Desert Sounds, Loneliness, & Being Named A Guitar God
Mary Timony joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Untame The Tiger, her first solo album in nearly twenty years. The Helium / Ex Hex indie legend tells us why she wanted it to sound like a desert record, having Fairport Convention’s Dave Mattacks drum on it, and suffering a breakup and loss of her parents while making the album. Timony goes on to discuss some of the themes of loneliness and escape, as well as her love of “crazy people,” and what it was like to be named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s greatest guitarists of all time.

She's one of the most talented singer/songwriters of our generation imo. Helium shows back in Boston during the 90's were amazing!

I have been a fan since pirate prude. Then went to the troubadour out here in los Angeles when the dirt of luck came out. Mary, I met you at that show and you were so kind to me, this dumb kid on LSD who didn't want to pay full price for the record. I thought it was strange that it cost like $2 more at the show and asked why I should pay that price when I could walk down the street and get it at amoeba. Anyways you gave it to me for really cheap and sent me walking. I have since gone on to do my own bands and endless touring and learned that the artist needs that money. Blah blah. I've never stopped listening to everything thing you put out. Last thing. During 😂 pandemic I went through the same thing. Caregiver to mother in law who passed straight into becoming the caregiver for my father in law. It's hard. I'm happy you came out the other side in good spirits. Thanks for everything. I'll stop bugging you now. Loneliness is at the door again. I better go let it in.

Was lucky enough to see Helium open up for Sonic Youth back in 1996.

This new solo record is absolutely fantastic! I'm addicted to these tunes! A near masterpiece effort and one of the more exciting albums of the decade. Mary Timony has my attention as a singer songwriter! 15:37

Loved Mary since Autoclave. She and former bandmate Christina Billotte are truly unsung guitar greats. Wish they would collaborate again. 🙏

From Boston, so i grew up with all the Helium albums, straight into
those first, two (AMAZING) solo albums (Mountains, Golden Dove).
I love this new album, especially "No Thirds."
That song is up there with "Riders on the stormy sea" and "The Mirror,"
    and "Blood Tree."

Yeah like she said, it's in two different keys. That really caught my ear. It's in B then goes to D.

Music analysis...ugh. as Zappa says Shut Up And Play Your Guitar. That's what matters.
