It's so great to see Mary Timony doing great (and showing some music too!) these days... I'm a girl from Brazil but my teens was all about her and her projects. After I dig in the riot grrrl, I'll discover amazing women doing unique things in music and Mary is for sure one of my guitar heroes! Not only that, but her exquisite writing reverbs with me and all the music I've been loving since I listen to Helium for the first time. Thank you for having her!
Mary is the coolest! She's a woman after my own heart. I adore lute music; Julian Bream and Paul O'Dette are absolute legends. Excellent picks from Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention as well.
@@tyk8402 She's been out there for such a long time, and I've been a fan since her days with Helium. She doesn't get the attention of a lot of other artists from the last 30 years or so but she's better than most of them and has one of the strongest discographies. And to still be this great and this creative this far in -- that's amazing and inspiring to me.
Pre COVID I saw her tour to mark the re-release of the Helium albums. Seeing Mary live is to experience the masterful way she merges all of the influences represented by that jam packed bag of awesome vinyl.
Back in the Helium days Mary came into the record store that I worked at and she was really cool and nice, even though I wasn't too familiar with her music. Geez, that was almost 30 years ago!
Mary Timony is amazing, going all the way back to Autoclave, Helium, The Spells, Wild Flag, Ex Hex and the list goes on and on. Thanks for having her do this, loved it!!
Both Fairport albums are incredible. Sandy Denny is my favorite female vocalist. And Ian (Iain) Matthews just doesn't get enough recognition here in the U.S. nor does the mighty Richard Thompson.
what a great video - her choices make me want to seek out and buy them all. Also to look up her music as I've never heard of her or the bands she's been in (sorry Mary). Please come to the UK. Leeds if possible.
Mary Timony - What's In My Bag? 2344pm 20.5.24 YES!? i knew a guy who liked those guys who made up Yes. allegedly it wasn't a pop band it was a.................i have no idea what it was but it wasn't a pop band...
I am only really familiar with her song with Team Sleep but hearing her talk about music and go down so many roads makes me want to check out more of her music!
Anytime I have the opportunity to see or hear Mary share her favorite music, I pay very close attention. She's an incredibly underappreciated talent who clearly has an open mind that absorbs music without concern for genre or other's opinions. That an indie/alternative icon maintains an unabashed love for Yes never fails to give me a little joy. And seeing her pull the Left Banke AND The Association out of her bag simply puts an exclamation point on her great taste in music.
Absolutely fantastic album. If you like The Casual Dots, check out Slant 6, the band Christina Billotte sang and played guitar in prior to forming The Casual Dots. They released two albums on Dischord Records, and they're both great.
It's strange, because i grew up obsessed with NWOBHM and Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, all this metal stuff, and being from Boston, i kept seeing pictures of this young woman with a PRS guitar, in the local music papers. I checked out her band, Helium, and it struck some deep, personal chord (no pun) inside me. As she moved out of Helium and into her first two solo albums on Matador, i was obsessed. Mary opened some strange door in my musical soul, and i'm still blown away by stuff like, "The Mirror" and "Blood Tree."
This is why I love this channel. She plays music that I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever, but she comes out with all these albums that she likes that I like, which is super cool.
@davidrichman9779 Comments on ‘Mary Timony - What's In My Bag?’ i'm still wondering if the steve albini is dead headline is true or not. shame if he's gone. again, in relation to your everyone's great even if their taste in muzak is not, a man whose output was tolerable but who had weird pop culture tastes... from zeni geva to altered images...

If Mary wants a good official document of the Yes 90125 tour I would recommend the 9012Live DVD. It's a good upgrade over the 80's VHS, you can watch it with or without the special effects.
White Flag would be in my bag! THAT was a supergroup! There are so many fantasy cool kids who I wish I could have been friends with as a kid in high school... talented and creative freaks like myself who could turn me on to interesting bands, familiar and obscure. Mary Timony is one such dream friend! Some you respect who can truly get you to listen without prejudice. I have never liked Yes but hearing her enthusiasm for them I suspect I would given them another try.
"Time it is Today" is The Associations hidden gem that could've/should've been a hit. Let's Active "Afoot" def needs proper respect. Can't wait to hear Timony Lute jams.
Mary is fantastic. I could listen to her talk about albums like this FOREVER! Also Casual Dots new album is great too - Christine is a genius. Imma start getting into the Lute too 😊

I was friends with Mary's brother Patrick , we met at the Art Institute of Boston where we both attended back in the late 80's early 90's , we were at my apartment in Somerville when some bible thumpers knocked on the door , we were partying , Patrick was drunk on vodka , so we took a walk with the young thumpers and talked some sense into them , it was hilarious ! Thanks !
Mary Timony is a national treasure. I love the transition from three lute records to Iron Maiden. Perfect.
And "Rainbow Rising"!!!
Love her ❤I remember listening to Helium back in the day and knowing she was an incredible artist.
Mary is INCREDIBLE! She should be so popular. Her hew album is nonstop brilliance and like most of her work incorporates a lot of these influences!
I agree with you 100%. Untame The Tiger is a masterpiece work.
Kathleen Hanna AND Mary Timony both on the channel within days? THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Her album with Helium, Dirt of Luck, is one of my favorite albums of all time. Her other stuff is pretty great too.

'Stargazer'! Agreed with another commenter that this WIMB has some zigs and zags. Love it.

Mary is right about Jethro Tull. Thick As A Brick is a prog masterpiece.
It’s not that musicians have taste in things one wouldn’t expect, but where that taste lands. MT has a wide pallet even by musician standards.
1997 is not when Autoclave was released but y’know I’m just saying.
Wow was just listening to Helium nice coincidence
