I frequently speak with a man who's 85 years old, lives on his own, still drives, and worked as an engineer for the military and college professor. He writes entire essays and books on current political events, drinks a glass of red wine every night. I don't care if I live to be 70, 80, or 90, I just want to be even half as sharp as that man.
Well, sounds like he just lucked out genetically with a relatively high IQ & a durable body. I must say, I'm not in love with folks driving beyond 80. Perhaps this man is still good to go, but nearly everyone 80+ is not...they simply cannot react quickly enough, can't see well enough, process information well enough, etc. to properly operate very heavy & fast death machines hurling thru space & time. Am I saying everyone 80+ should be stuck on an island somewhere in the pacific & given little bumper cars to drive around very slowly with? Hope you're having a great day.
@@scottsherman5262 It's not all luck and genetics bro lol No chance dude is still working at that age if he didn't develop good habits & work ethic which contribute to health & iq
@@jasonandrus12 So, a couple things...stuff like the ability to consistently do things we don't love doing, which reads as work ethic/good habits, is largely genetic. People who outwork others are presented as morally superior to lazy folks, when it's got much less to do with morality than simply being born that way. Anecdotally, which everyone knows is the best sort of evidence, all of our (5) kids have very similar environments & genetics, but certain genetic expressions vary from child to child & lead to each one being vastly different in personality, & yes...some of the kids (at least so far) appear to be quite driven, while others appear to be, well, less so. On to IQ, which is so largely not affected by stuff that you do that it's not worth talking about. Assuming we all have decent enough upbringings, our IQ just is what it is based on our genetics...even spending countless hours studying in all the right ways won't durably improve one's general intelligence. But hey, what do I know...aside from most things.
You've a point. When it comes to longevity, people always think about the food you should eat, the physical activity you should do etc. and these are defenetly important things. But it's probably equally important to keep a sharp mind and a positive attitude towards life. Many people when they get older, loose interest in life in general. They go outside less, they aren't interested in social or political matters anymore. And this contributes to a bad aging, in my opinion.
It really did. I’m naturally awkward and kind of socially challenged (tho I’m better at it now lol) and socially anxious, but man sometimes if I’m interacting with friends and I’m comfortable and having fun… it feels really really nice
I was skeptical looking at someone his size speaking about longevity as such a huge bodybuilder but man kudos to him for being so open about what it will potentially do to his health and even more respect because you can tell he does the bodybuilding because he loves it and it brings him happiness even while knowing it could have negative consequences down the line.
He actually just stopped body building (competitively) and is slowly coming off the drugs. He spoke about the psychological effects on a different podcast, and it sounds miserable.
Bodybuilders are in general the most healthy, health- conscious, science aware humans out there. We are all in general massive nerds that just so happen to look like neanderthals. I have lifted for 40 years, have bone density at a 2 (high excellent) and still compete in bikini competitions. No one believes I am 61. When people asked me how I stay so fit I say simply: I lift weights. Heavy weights. Then they usually shut up because no one wants to put the effort in day in and day out and do the grind. My weight training is foundational to the success in every aspect of my life, including getting through massive grief over a loss of a child , growth of a seven figure business, and the rest of the slings and arrows that life has thrown at me. Stay strong people!
Dr. Mike is an all around great dude & puts out so much great content, knowledge, workouts & exercise tips etc its awesome. Such a crazy smart, well read, well spoken, practice what he preaches, well rounded guy with a great sense of humor, outlook on life, is honest and keeps it "a matter of fact" and "to the point" , says whats true and doesn't sugar coat or exaggerate things, its def refreshing. Especially in the fitness & social media/youtube world/space. Every podcast etc he does esp this one and content on his own channel is always really well done. Even the technical stuff he talks about, does a great job joking, making the content fun, relatable and easy to understand regardless of how technical, precise, advanced etc the topic at hand actually is! The app him and jared designed and came up with is also really great & works exceptionally well. Highly recommend his channel, workouts, workout app. Etc!!
That was a phenomenal interview. Love Dr. Mike, especially his philosophy channel. It's cool to hear people talking about the future in a positive, optimistic way.
Chris, I’m astounded that you haven’t watched Ghost In The Shell. The 1995 original anime is an absolute seminal piece of art for our generation and demographic. Well worth your time (I would advise avoiding the recent Hollywood remake until you’ve at least seen the original)
My wife is a phd student in a lifespan lab at Brandeis university. One interesting thing they found is most of the factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease also contribute to Alzheimer’s, which help to increase prevention. Another interesting thing they are finding is the social support and engagement Dr. Mike is interested in. For example, older individuals who engage more in religion and have a community to interact with also tend to engage in healthier behaviors to prevent cvd and Alz, such as with the 7th day adventists in one of the blue zones. We really are getting onto something that the emotional connections and support you are able to develop and maintain in your life is one of the best controls for longevity, of course in addition to a relatively healthy diet and engaging in physical and cognitive activities. Of course genetics is always a big roll like how Mike mentioned, some people have a crumudginey old grandpa who lived to 90+, drank, smoked and was an asshole, but damn did he have good genes! Now we just need to figure out HOW to get people to engage in these behaviors before we can all just upload ourselves to the cloud!!!

Great podcast there is a lot of talk these days re longevity but no one is talking about how we can improve our genetics in the first place. One factor that is overlooked and never spoken about is that if parents delay having their children till after the age of 35 this increases the likelihood of their children and grandchildren developing both mental and physical health problems also recently people are delaying having children till their late thirties due to financial issues and as a result there has been a rise in particular of mental health problems we need to be looking at how we can prevent poor genetics in the first place

Probably because u lost 35lbs. And of course working out building muscle and getting more mentally healthy. Thank you Chris and Mike you guys are both a blessing
The last section of this is some of the most amazing stuff I've heard/read in a long time. Needed to see that kind of optimism (yes I have the salt with me) and it was still HUGE on the importance scale. Chris crew, highly recommend that as a short as well for the channel. God Speed and thanks for another great life changing/improving video. Now to go back through all of Dr. Mike then his channel. What an amazing interview
As a Physical Therapist, this episode is excellent. My 2 cents, the more useable muscle that you can use through a full ROM, the better your quality of life as you age. Keep your useable muscle and keep doing the skills you wanna be able to do in your 80s. 🙂
On the point at 01:45:00 I think Mike really underestimates how much drug approvals and safety processes are going to slow stuff down. Even if AI can identify drug compounds, screen for reactions, design delivery mechanisms and adjust doses (and we're a while away from integrated systems which do all of that in a way that doesn't require a lot of human involvement), those will probably still need to be run through multiple phases of drug trials, which take years. Maybe, eventually, we'll be at the stage where we trust AI produce compounds which are safe enough to slash down on the approvals process - but that's a _human_ shift which requires regulatory, legal and cultural change. Which is not speedy.
A friend of mine is a physical therapist and one of his teachers told him that exercise is like medicine, and you need to make the medicine taste good and then it can be taken with better ease. Exercise is the same thing. If you like the activity that you are doing, then it won't seem like work and you will look more forward to doing it.
Dr Mike, casually mentioning he'd expect his lifestyle to take around 5 years off his life...at my age - almost 59 - one starts to realise how short life is, and how precious those 5 years would be! Wait! He SAID 10 YEARS!!! 10!
love watching interviews with Dr Mike on your channel, great knowledge and advise as well as tons of humor and the bromance lol Make the content educational, interesting and entertaining
I have been telling my wife for years that my life plan is to never die (I am 31 years old). And I don't care if it is by genetic engineering revers-aging, becoming mostly robot, or uploading my brain. It is VERY hard to get people think in exponential progress if they are not suited for that. I remember explaining to her in 2016 that 10 years ago FIRST iPhone was introduced and now 10 years later EVERYONE has much better version of it. So excited for the future. My short term plan is to cruise through solar system in my spaceship under insane Gs because my robotic body will be able to handle it just fine.
Interesting points! It’s amazing how much misinformation is out there. 'Health and Beauty Mastery' by Julian Bannett totally changed my perspective on what we’re told about health and wellness. Highly recommend for anyone who wants the full story!
21:11 I believe this is one of the most important messages out there, especially for young people. Where I'm from fitness and bodybuilding is really popular, and EVERY 16 -17 something guy is trying to be optimal. It not only stresses you to poorer health, it makes the barrier to consistent training so much higher. People go hard for months then fall off, or really fuck themselves up like me. I used to have a BMI of 19 with fairly good strength and muscle, training 5 times a week and feeling like shit. I also have a forehead (metaphorically speaking) made of steel. I can make myself go forever. Long story short, I've spent 10 years overworking myself, not getting enough calories from orthorexia and not gaining any meaningful muscle. I have had mild insomnia since my teenage years and haven't slept enough either. I continued to try and optimize everything even though I was getting sick. When I had my first child 3 years ago I just couldn't keep it up so I started (in my mind) overeating and training way less. Went up 8 kg, still
1:31:45 that's a nice 4th wall break 😁 And thanks for confirmation, that this is a real set, even if in a studio - at least not green screen, I was fussed by how fake another barn several months or years ago clearly felt, especially with sudden changes.
People shouldn't listen to him when he's talking about that. In other podcasts, he said that 10-15 years from now there'll be a "work out pill" so you don't even have to work out anymore. Or that homeless people will have robot butlers lol. In this one, he says major diseases like cancer or Alzheimer's will be eradicated not so far into the future... People were just as enthusiastic about a lot of discoveries in the past: when vitamins were discovered, some experts thought all diseases will be solved, the same when vaccines were invented, the same when the human genome was mapped, the same is happening now with a bunch of other things like probiotics, IF, etc. Sure, AI is awesome but Mike seems to think it's something revolutionary, actually it's not new and not magical at all.
The last few minutes of the podcast cover an idea experienced within the game SOMA, one of my fav games all time. Highly recommend. Simon one can never become Simon 2, the you that you are today will always end
Been really getting more into Dr. Mike Isrartel's content, this one will for sure be valuable. Also saw you are the Sleep Token Show in the O2, but didn't want to bother you though, hope you had as much fun as I did. Thanks for the content.
A book that changed my life in ways that I never could imagine is "Secret Testosterone Nexus of Evolution".Drop whatever you're doing right now and go find that book. Trust me after I implemented things from the book my testosterone levels went beast mode
Sometimes i wish there would be more attention to the emotional and mental aspect of eating. For many its a coping and regulating mechanism. The food is not the problem, its the solution. If you figure out the issues and find different solutions, food doesnt need to be used as a tool anymore. But if you dont work on that, you can forget any diet or food protocol, because the person wont be able to stick with it. The next crisis will come and so will the binge.
Mike has a few videos about this and ways to hack binging that I found really interesting. However, since emotional lead is usually tied into psychological issues, it’s best to leave those conversations up to the people who are trained in that field, which Mike is not.

Favourite guest ever! Second favourite set! (after the automobile repair shop)
A friend of mine is a physical therapist and one of his teachers told him that exercise is like medicine, and you need to make the medicine taste good and then it can be taken with better ease. Exercise is the same thing. If you like the activity that you are doing, then it won't seem like work and you will look more forward to doing it.
I’m here for Dr. Mike ❤ 😊 He’s the best.
I want to see so many more of you two together. More more more. It is fantastic.
Wow what an episode. Dr Mike never disappoints. The discussion on ai medicine and cybernetics has my mind blown!!
Dr Mike, casually mentioning he'd expect his lifestyle to take around 5 years off his life...at my age - almost 59 - one starts to realise how short life is, and how precious those 5 years would be!
Wait! He SAID 10 YEARS!!! 10!
Smokers , drinkers , non exercisers etc. shorten their lives by a lot more than that.
@laza6141 yes! What a thought!
love watching interviews with Dr Mike on your channel, great knowledge and advise as well as tons of humor and the bromance lol Make the content educational, interesting and entertaining
Incredible content, grateful for these pods. Love Dr Mikes making progress channel. Thank you gents!
I’d never seen Dr. Mike more excited than when he started talking about the future of AI 😂 Amazing! 🙌🏼
Dr Mike is talking the plot of the game “SOMA” in the last 30 min! Crazy stuff.
Yes!! I really enjoyed playing SOMA
Interesting points! It’s amazing how much misinformation is out there. 'Health and Beauty Mastery' by Julian Bannett totally changed my perspective on what we’re told about health and wellness. Highly recommend for anyone who wants the full story!
i heard about that book before i might buy it now
Big fan of these conversations, love it
21:11 I believe this is one of the most important messages out there, especially for young people.
Went up 8 kg, still
Much love to both of yall! great episode and I love the future that Mike lays out for us
Fantastic piece of content, thanks for sharing.
When he started talking about bionics, towards the end, the conversation got real fun.
chris training "fighting" gives me the chills....cricket is a sport but not one played but anyone with talent as a kid in the uk
The bromance continues. Would love to see Dr Greger on this podcast around longevity and push him around some of the athletic stuff.
1:31:45 that's a nice 4th wall break 😁
And thanks for confirmation, that this is a real set, even if in a studio - at least not green screen, I was fussed by how fake another barn several months or years ago clearly felt, especially with sudden changes.
Mike is very optimistic on technology coming soon. I think it'll take a lot longer to get here
People shouldn't listen to him when he's talking about that.
I would never think we were going to have a ship of theseus promlem with humans. Wild.
The Grindr world record commentary and Autophagy made my morning. Thank you

WE LOVE MIKE
I love Dr. Mike. He is my favorite guest on this show absolute dictionary of information and yes, he is getting better at blinking.😂
Loved this episode
I loved the last section of this podcast
Best combo out there 🙌🏽
Sometimes i wish there would be more attention to the emotional and mental aspect of eating.
2 of my favourite humans on the planet
Thank You For Your Time And Knowledge 💯🤝
This was filmed in October? Holy shit I definitely underestimated the time it takes to produce such content
he has a very pleasant manner, I like him
Wonderful, another excuse for me to play World of Warcraft LOL

Dr. Mike looks like he's a beast in the office and the ring.
Can you imagine being in the same office as someone with a head like that
