I fixed this scene from Obi-Wan Kenobi so it flows better

  • I've cut and rearranged shots from the scene of Imperial attack on The Path's hideout from Episode 5. My aim was to improve the pacing, make it feel more tense and dynamic.
    Stormtroopers are pushing in faster and harder, there is less unnecesary shots and Tala's sacrifice is rearanged so it feels more... genuine (? idk :D). I'd wish I could do something about this horrendous camera shake, but stabilizing it digitaly only makes it wonky and worse.
    Let me know what you think!

      @@Espartanica I will say I think that’s because we know the fate of all of these characters. Obi wan, Vader, Leia, Luke - there’s nothing really on the line for the characters we deeply care about. The other characters didn’t give us much to care about and a reason to want to see what happens for them because we know we don’t see them later on. That makes it incredibly difficult to create something compelling.

    I always found this fight scene as silly as the Leia chase scene. I really hate how they're making the stormtroopers can't aim joke canon, you're telling me in that open area where there's barely any cover and you have overwhelming firepower. You only managed to kill one person but had to be point blank in order to do it, and absolutely everyone is missing their shots. That's like imagining the Tantive IV scene where the Stormtroopers don't kill anyone and just keep on awkwardly moving up with no rebels dying.

    • @commanderpjt
      @commanderpjt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      Fuck let’s just watch A New Hope. It’s explained that the stormtrooper’s miss Luke and the gang on purpose because they would show the Empire where the rebel base is if they escape. Honestly very impressive how many times they miss considering their trying too. So much so they’ve convinced people for years they can’t shoot at all.

    • @commanderpjt
      @commanderpjt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      And even if you still believe stormtroopers are bad shots, why would Disney make the empire so cartoonishly evil and Incompetent but in the same breath their trying to make us care about how bad news the Empire is? It seems self defeating and very contradicting.

    • @kennygraham4067
      @kennygraham4067 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      For real. They have made them a huge punching bag and joke across a number of their productions for years and years now.
      I know there is an explanation for the poor aim on the deathstar, but I don't mind a few relatively subtle jabs written into things concerning that. Just keep it subtle and not frequent. I didn't mind the scout troopers during the season 1 finale of Mandalorian. That was done relatively well...though I do wish 1 had sucky aim and the other actually hit their target. But it isn't outright saying stormtroopers have bad aim. It was just two guys that normally patrol on speeder bikes that can't hit something at range with their holdout blaster pistol.
      But I wish they would stop making it an actual thing. Especially when we get the scenes like the TV shows where you have swarms of bad guys that can't even shoot the good guys who are clumped up like fish in a barrel.
      Atleast with the Mandalorian and Boba Fett they will show the stormtroopers actually hitting something with some regularity. But then all they can ever hit are the areas specifically covered by armor to the point of ridiculousness.

    • @commanderpjt
      @commanderpjt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@kennygraham4067 Hey I whole hardly agree as with you said about the scout troopers. I think the reason the scene works so well was because it it was obvious that it was being played off as a joke and that those troopers were shown to be incompetent compared to the storm troopers in the same episode that we’re an actual threat.

    @Vandicoup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Yeah...about your description. I think the camera shaking is horrendous too lol. They even did that during the finale too, right? I don't get it man. For a, reportedly, $25MIL+ an episode Star Wars show (the BIGGEST budget of any SW show to date thus far, and I think even the biggest TV show budget of ALL time even?? -- knowing that GOT had a budget of only $6MIL-$15MIL+ an episode!).....they do shaky cam for all the fights?! It just makes it look a bit too cheap, unprofessional and fan filmy-esque and blurs and muddies way, waaaay too much of the sweet, sweet fighting, choreography and even a lot of the acting for my liking, I dunno. Why do they do this?? ;/

    • @spikul
      @spikul  2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      That's what I thought to myself as well. We get that shaky cam in the very first scene, during a Jedi training, clones enter the room and the camera goes nuts. I saw this and was like "oh, not good". There is so much money and planning involved with SW projects and stuff like this makes it look just unprofessional and cheap. I just don't get it, it's disappointing.

    • @Vandicoup
      @Vandicoup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@spikul Yes, EXACTLY!! The moment I saw that scene, I almost immediately was let down by just how shaky it all was. I enjoyed the actual scene itself, but man those shaky cams nearly ruined it for me just like how all the other fights felt almost ruined by them too, including the big final fight. There was just so much sweet action and beautiful choreography, all almost entirely wasted by the intense shakiness of their filming. Ughhh >:(

    • @spikul
      @spikul  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @Vandicoup
      @Vandicoup 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spikul Indeed. It really does have the exact opposite effect and ends up making many people feel dizzy and nauseous, even, from what I've heard from other comments! Also, I just saw this one comment underneath another similar Kenobi edit that mentioned how the shaky cam was actually digitally added in post, apparently?? I asked him exactly how he knew this, waiting for a response from him at the moment, but yeah. Do you think so as well? That's insane if that's the case. I'd love them to release the original, unaltered version at some point on Disney+, just like how we never got the original, unaltered version of any of the OT movies on home video, lol.
      They could do it like how they have one of the many "versions" that they offer on Disney+, just like how they offer different versions of their movies, like Doctor Strange 2 in like IMAX, Letterbox and such, if you've noticed that lil' feature over there, hehe.
      I think it'd be cool if they offered a "non-shaky cam" version for content like the Kenobi series too lol.

    • @spikul
      @spikul  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Vandicoup I can see some of these shots getting shaky cam added in the post to link them to a shot before or after.
      I think a lot of shots are just shot with nartural cam shake and you can see that because of the way things blur out really. There is proper paralax happening in the wider shots, lights blur in a proper way. Hard to explain really but since I've done my fair share of shaky cam in post I think I'm able to tell apart the digital way and just a camera man doing their thing. Plus from what I see the're pushing hard on capturing as much stuff as possible in camera, even lightsabers actually glow nowadays on set, so I assume it was a choice to go with shaky cam on set so they'll get an authentic looking shot.
      I highly doubt they'll release any other version soon and definetelly not a "shaky cam free" one.
      Idk what they filmed it with but movies that are shown in IMAX formats are shot to be shown in IMAX theathers, Kenobi is a 6hr series set to release on D+, plus they did some screenings here and there on conventions and such but those versions does not look any different.
      I think we're left with what we got.

    I don't get why she didn't think to, i don't know, THROW the thermal detonator to actually kill the inquisitor.

    That series certainly made good use of the "nobody can hit a barn-door" trope. Bizarre to see two densely packed sides fire at each other at close range and only have one or two people hit. That engagement should have been done in seconds.
    0:55 is probably the most egregious example, where Obi-Wan just gets bored of defending, so turns his back and jogs off while the Stormtroopers have a clear shot at him and whiff the lot.

    From the 180 rule breaks and the disregard of the scene maps / teleporting, it's obvious they had zero clue how to edit.
