  • Hungarian Ignaz Semmelweis pioneered the idea of washing your hands! He led the way in early antiseptic procedures and is the favourite scientist of Michael Loughlin, who works in the same field at Nottingham Trent University.

In Hungary, Semmelweis is well known as “The Savior of Mothers.”

sadly - hospital-borne infections still abound - Dr Peter Pronovost of Johns Hopkins has taken Ignaz Semmelweis' place on the issue of infections caused by catheters inserted into patients - Pronovost developed protocols that have proven themselves much as Semmelweis' had - only to be met with reticence by hospitals and doctors

Brady you really need to find someone who would share the love for Paul Dirac.
Great Work, I'm glad you're uploading in this channel again.

Seeing the display picture of this channel, I thought this is Dr. Clewett's channel. In any case, it's a Brady Haran channel so I hit the subscribe button by default :-)

Yet I've never seen or heard of a single statue or plaque commemorating Ignaz Semmelweis anywhere. Oh! But I've seen PLENTY of WAR memorials and canons in parks and tributes to soldiers and generals.

LOL In my college lab class, our first lab (usually the safety lessons) was all about Semmelweis and his great contribution to science.
Its sad that despite all this, he was ridiculed by the others in his time. I think he eventually went mad because of it.

beautiful story, but my favorite scientist is Richard Feynman. the most beautiful mind, I, have ever seen... or heard.

The idea of miasma was one of many cases where people confused correlation with causation.

I think I'll refrain from answering that (obviously stupid) question. I know I started it, but perhaps it's not that relevant to this video after all.

  • @Nilguiri
    @Nilguiri 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

About as relevant as the bible, yes.

  • @Nilguiri

I am agnostic on the matter. He may have, I don't know, I have yet to hear about any convincing evidence for a historical Jesus.
Even an eyewitness account of something that happened 5 minutes ago is not to be trusted. But there are no contemporaneous accounts. The first writings are from decades later. But even if there were somebody of that name at that time, a charismatic priest, for example, that says nothing about the supernatural claims made about him.
    Anyway... A bit off topic.
    Cheers.

I was referring to 3:56 4:11 "They had offended the gods, they were sinful", "far better that you pay a priest lots of money to absolve you of sins and that might make you better".
Priests' prayers are of no help to somebody dying of an infection. If the bible was "God's word", then why did he or Jesus not mention diseases and their prevention?
    So either:
    A) He let people suffer and die of easily preventable diseases on purpose.
    B) He did know about hygiene and disease.
    C) Other

Think of all the death and suffering that this Jesus character could have prevented if he hadn't been too busy doing other party tricks like turning water wine to tell people how to make and use soap. I guess it's because the authors who invented him didn't know about soap.
