Linus, you nailed those price to performance graphs. I would love to see a video where you compare all the reference cards of the latest gen of gaming cards for both AMD & NVidia to see which has the best price:performance ratio.
Vega 56: $500/1070 performance, Vega 64: $600/1080 performance. AMD just hiked up the msrp under the excuse that the advertised pricing was for "early-adopters only." Why is AMD able to get away with anything, imagine if Nvidia did this, people would be outraged, screaming that they are being ripped off, but when AMD does it everyone quiets down and accepts it. Do people not understand the only way to make a company improve is to give it backlash?
"We couldn't even find a GTX 1070 for less than about 430$". But do you think you'll be able to find a Vega 56 for less than 500$ before the price of 1070 go down?
I'm still excited about AMD's CPU technologies and improvements but I'm not going to lie, I was hoping for a more vast improvement with their GPU's. Hopefully, Navi will be the big step up that we all want to see! This is just a strange time to shop for any GPU's except if you have the cash you're probably better off just getting either a GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti.
Makes sense, really. The net effect of this will be the forcing of prosumer and low end professional markets into the "industrial" market of Quadros, etc. where they previously used Ti and Titan models. Intel did the same thing until recently.
It's not even clear there's a savings to be had. The MSRP of Vega 56 is $400 while 1070s were selling as low as ~$330 before the mining boom, with ~$360 being somewhat common. If Vega 56 holds at $400 and the product is actually available there is a case to be made but if the price shoots up and/or there is nothing to be had until 2018 then AMD has basically abdicated two hardware generations, starting from the non-answer to the 980 Ti, which they still struggle against even with this new product lineup.
I am loving my vega card, i have the MSI RX Vega 56, and it's amazing. i'm absolutely in love with it despite it's incredibly massive size (it's as long as my forearm)
And only now am I regretting getting a 'shitty' first-stage EVGA GTX 1080 SC with 8GB/10Gbps back in August 2016 for $650. I really should've just waited for the 1080ti.
But those two cards are in completely different performance tiers. You would only regret it if you bought, say, a 1080 and had money to spare a week before the 1080ti released.
Don't feel too bad. You would have had to wait until April of this year to get a 1080Ti. Even then, unless you got one really early, they are much more than $650. I have the ROG Strix OC 1080Ti, that I managed to snag for $779 at launch, but now those go for $799 everywhere. The non OC Strix card is still $760, the cheapest 1080Ti I've seen is the Gigabyte which is still $719. I have yet to see one below $700, even though the MSRP is on founders cards is $699.
Yeah, the EVGA GTX 1080 and 1070. Oh, and the GTX 480. Funnily enough, despite the stereotype, it seems Nvidia cards have had more serious heat problems than AMD ones.
Lol Wait a minute Akula, Nvidia cards are the hotter bunch? Listing 3 examples of not even very hot cards except from the 480 which I had in Sli in 2010, can vouch for it. Amd has released constantly hot and power hungry cards since the beginning.
EVGA GTX 1080s and 1070s caught fire and exploded, even after the application of thermal pads designed to stop this. And the GTX 480 is a goddamn meme for being hot, yours might have been fine but reaching temperatures of over a hundred degrees was not very uncommon.
OK, So I pay $100 more for a G-sync monitor and it works better. Or spend the same amount and get a Vega card and get Freesync. I had freesync It was not even close to as good as G-Sync. I guess if i made 2000 zip files a day it would be worth it. Look at the numbers again. As far as Productivity your talking about 10-15 sec difference. So after rendering a 30min TH-cam video you would save your self 2-3 min if that. Unless you sit and watch your videos render its not worth it. Also your talking about 1-1.5 amps more power draw. That adds up. Then add in the insane heat the Vega cards put out.
I paid $425 for a dell 27" 144hz 1440 monitor. I ran a RX580 with my LG 2560x1080 monitor and it had screen tearing. Went to G sync and it all went away. Using a 1070 now.
56 at least seems priced well, 1070ish performance at 100 dollars less (plus freesync). 64 is the more questionable product, doesn't justify its increase over 56 and doesn't quite reach the 1080.
it'll probably be more expensive than the 1070 here i presume. the 1070 is like 420€ here while the rx vega 64 is like 650€ here. since the TDP of the 54 is just 100$ lower i do presume that the vega 54 won't be below 500€.
Vega actually gets massively more power efficient when you use the balanced/power saving profiles and actually only result in a fairly small performance hit. That said 1070-1080 performance at a cheaper price was all I really expected or wanted from Vega, most of us won't have the cash lying around to pick up a $1000 GPU anyhow.
I honestly think that the bundles are not that bad for the launch of Vega. After a month or so I think that once companies like Sapphire and Asus start making their coolers for the Vega cards, AMD will change the price of the Liquid Cooled 64 from $699 to something more reasonable like $629 or $649. Or at least, I hope that's what they do
you'll understand the edit when you watch all of linuses videos. basically linus said the same words some time ago in some other video so the clips were edited together. pretty cool imo
AudeyMATIK! Actually that $3000 gpu has an extremely good price/performance and even AdoredTv did a video on how AMD will have trouble competing with this
If this card can let me run most games over 60 fps at 1080p on ultra settings, or even 1440p or 4k upscaled on well optimized titles, while my CPU is a 12 year old i7-965e with 12 gb of 1066 ghz ddr3, you know it's still a beast.
Actually - The RX Vega lineup does have a secondary use! It can act as a room heater. In sweden, it's pretty cold in houses! I'll go get myself a liquid "cooled" 64 and heat up my room! Probably also an efficient heater, compared to other options :)
While I support AMD. I'll admit Vega is quite disappointing. Where AMD succeeded in making a great CPU. They seemed to have flopped in the GPU department.
Fuck all of this bullshit, I'm supporting AMD, I don't want them bankrupt, maybe the 64 wasn't everything I hoped and dreamed, for.. the past 5-6 months, but whatever, fuck that, it'll still run my games smooth. Only problem now, I still can't find them in stock! fucking perfect! :)

Bought a vega56 strix gaming card 1 year ago and i just love it. Never had any worries and i destroy blender and premiere pro with it.
@Nice Guy it's amazing tbh
@Nice Guy i measured the power usage of my gpu and i can't quite remember how much it exactly draws but its not alot so i dont do that.
I undervolted it though!
I've bought used Vega 64 Asus Rog Strix OC nine months ago. Got it for under £200 and it seems to be a better deal in 2021 than it was in 2020.
Should I buy this or wait for Vega?
Mikael Soltaniha
Buy a GTX 1080 if you can get it for a good price, almost the same performance and better power consumption.
What's a GTX1080?
Mikael Soltaniha I hope you are kidding...
Of course I'm kidding.. I'm watching a review of Vega.. I was messing with ElJackale lol
Wait for Intel
RTX 2080 or wait for Navi?
Start the meme now!
no
You mean RTX 2070 or wait for Navi
Hmm, I was hoping to switch out my 1080 for the 64 (for a full AMD build with my Ryzen 1600x) but damn, power consumption and the fact that miners scooped up ALL the 64s on Newegg made the decision for me. No.
Les Carpio get the 56
Majd Abokassab He has 1080 what are you smoking. 1080 shits on 56
TheTurtleOffDoom oh I was not being attention about what he wrote I thought he own 1070
TheTurtleOffDoom plus I don't smoke 😐
Even with a 1070 you would not waste the money to get a 56.... That would be so dumb
U had a great opportunity to compare the seamlessness of the video with synergy
but the real question is why didn't linus drop it
GameGabe Technology is slowly becoming Linus proof.
Because they didn't allow him to pick it up ;P
Loved that intro: WAIT FOR VEGA! XD
380 Watts?! That's double the 1080 Ti. Sorry AMD. I was super keen for Vega but that's too damn power hungry.
I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel Linus. Informative, precise, easy-to listen to and a joy to watch.
Keep up the solid work dude!
4 years later, my rx vega 64 has been kicking ass and running quite a few modern triple A titles to near top settings.
That’s a lie a have one and it barely gets 60 on high 1080p
@@StillBrokeOff yours is a lie too then because mine runs most modern triple A games at 4k60 on medium or 1080p90 on high
@@mxmobile5619 no way i literally have proof
@@StillBrokeOff is yours running stock clocks or overclocked? Mines overclocked to hell and back with water cooling and custom drivers.
@@mxmobile5619 stock but overclocked it ran same or worse so idk if it was the card itself
might as wait for RX Andromeda and GTX Einstein. 🤷🤷🤷
"You actually need both 8 pins for these cards"
*3 years later* "Both cards have triple 6pin connectors and consume upwards of 500w peak load"
In 2020, vega 64 is now available for only 200 dollars used, and I bought two for my gaming rig
AMD Vegan.
Tyler Patton tbh no
Loud, annoying, mostly hot air?
yes?
I'm actually a vegan. This offends me.
ABaumstumpf rekt.
DUDE YOU'RE NOT OLD, STOP IT WITH THAT
but linus seriously, you have the face of a 25 year old IT student
He's like, turning 31
It's OK exactly, so why make the I'm old joke
why dont you test in 4k resolution?? i think every cards in the same level of gtx 1080 can run game at 4k
they can run any game at 4k, but imo they are made for 1440p and 1080p, maybe 4k but thats if you want to sacrifice some FPS, if i was you i would wait for another generations of cards if you'r looking for 4k gaming in 2017+ (just my opinion)
Because he's Linus. He benchmarks GPUs at 1080p and CPUs at 4k
Linus, you nailed those price to performance graphs. I would love to see a video where you compare all the reference cards of the latest gen of gaming cards for both AMD & NVidia to see which has the best price:performance ratio.
It sold out in Newegg in about 20 mins
Vega 56: $500/1070 performance, Vega 64: $600/1080 performance. AMD just hiked up the msrp under the excuse that the advertised pricing was for "early-adopters only." Why is AMD able to get away with anything, imagine if Nvidia did this, people would be outraged, screaming that they are being ripped off, but when AMD does it everyone quiets down and accepts it. Do people not understand the only way to make a company improve is to give it backlash?
"We couldn't even find a GTX 1070 for less than about 430$". But do you think you'll be able to find a Vega 56 for less than 500$ before the price of 1070 go down?
its hard finding them for under 1000 now
I would kill for an vega 56 at 500$
Gonzalo cativa in that case bring a gun, mask, and 500
I just got a used 64 for $250! Crazy deal
Liked the editting in this one Linus, looks like your huge investments are paying off!
Cheapest vega 64 in germany 650€
Cheapest 1080 ti in german 700€
Rip amd.
I can do better:
Cheapest vega 64 in Switzerland CHF844
Cheapest 1080 ti in Switzerland CHF741
Yeah...
its miners card
I'm still excited about AMD's CPU technologies and improvements but I'm not going to lie, I was hoping for a more vast improvement with their GPU's. Hopefully, Navi will be the big step up that we all want to see!
This is just a strange time to shop for any GPU's except if you have the cash you're probably better off just getting either a GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti.
This sad performance will make nvidia hold of gaming volta graphics cards for even longer. I'm thinking they might do a pascal refresh first.
Makes sense, really. The net effect of this will be the forcing of prosumer and low end professional markets into the "industrial" market of Quadros, etc. where they previously used Ti and Titan models. Intel did the same thing until recently.
carzacc what's the point of saving a few bucks on an amd card, when in the long run, you'll lose more money due to higher energy bill?
It's not even clear there's a savings to be had. The MSRP of Vega 56 is $400 while 1070s were selling as low as ~$330 before the mining boom, with ~$360 being somewhat common. If Vega 56 holds at $400 and the product is actually available there is a case to be made but if the price shoots up and/or there is nothing to be had until 2018 then AMD has basically abdicated two hardware generations, starting from the non-answer to the 980 Ti, which they still struggle against even with this new product lineup.
I doubt it, they didnt hold their pascal line up and amd was on the same situation back then
Hey Intel does the refresh of the refresh.
If anything I would buy a Vega card purely for the looks of it. Love the design and the white.
MY NVIDIA GTX 1080s ARE SAFE!!!!!!!!! not gonna lie those Vega cards look clean I would probably buy one if they offered the same performance
Quality Intro👍
Marko Thom I enjoyed the floating Snoop part.
Ima wait for the 1150 cuz I'm poor
LMAO WTF it'll be about 1050 ti
Don't wait for volta. get 1050 ti or 1060 3gb
박준우 I'm over here still with my 950
Over here with the 1050 ti
I am loving my vega card, i have the MSI RX Vega 56, and it's amazing. i'm absolutely in love with it despite it's incredibly massive size (it's as long as my forearm)
I wouldn't wait for Navi they will have 2nd place as always.
Arthie good csgo meme
AMD hasnt made a good GPU since the 7 series. Bunch of fucking dissapointments
why is that?
protip: mouse without borders does what synergy claims to and is free
Comparable performance at only double the power draw, what a great option!
Takes 5 mins at most to undervolt... NVIDIA is for simple plebs it seems.....
After 9 years of development, I hope it was worth the wait
And only now am I regretting getting a 'shitty' first-stage EVGA GTX 1080 SC with 8GB/10Gbps back in August 2016 for $650.
I really should've just waited for the 1080ti.
XOLiD Bruh I'm here with my R9 380 ;_; That shit costed me $340 lmao
Hey your power bill thanks you.
XOLiD at lrast you didn't buy a 960 a week before 1080 annoubcement :/
*If only you could find a Vega Card at msrp and in stock ;(*
£660 on Amazon? I could almost buy a 1080ti for that.
"You actually need two 8 pin connectors for these cards, ouch"
*Me staring at the 3090 in my pc*
"Yeah about that..."
I'm early yay...coz mostly I watch LTT latest videos 12 hrs. ago coz I'm from the other side of the earth :)
Amd still can't make a card that doesn't use a ridiculous amount of watts!
have you heard of the rx 580?
FastMax the rx580 just proves my point even more
the rx 580 is pretty efficient for its computing performance though, thats also why its so popular for miners
calcyss it's less efficient than a 1070 which performs way better
rayn man I said for its computing performance. Thats where the 1070 is *quite a lot worse.*
Also, the 580 is a tad cheaper.
They better not be hot.. I don't want my computer catching fire from insufficient cooling
if i remember right that happened with an another card
Yeah, the EVGA GTX 1080 and 1070. Oh, and the GTX 480. Funnily enough, despite the stereotype, it seems Nvidia cards have had more serious heat problems than AMD ones.
R9 290 reference design user here, it's lit
Lol Wait a minute Akula, Nvidia cards are the hotter bunch? Listing 3 examples of not even very hot cards except from the 480 which I had in Sli in 2010, can vouch for it. Amd has released constantly hot and power hungry cards since the beginning.
EVGA GTX 1080s and 1070s caught fire and exploded, even after the application of thermal pads designed to stop this. And the GTX 480 is a goddamn meme for being hot, yours might have been fine but reaching temperatures of over a hundred degrees was not very uncommon.
Glad I bought a GTX 1080 last year. No regrets and every game run smooth as butter!
Idk why I’m here in 2022, but I am.
It’s amazing how irrelevant these are lol.
Vega 64 is a joke. $600 for 1080 performance? You can pick up a 1080 for $500.
Take into consideration freesync, and the increase in productivity.
MISFITSWITCH Quit your exaggeration. I have used 1440p monitors rendering freesync and g sync, literally no difference.
thing is, g-sync monitors are way more expensive than free sync ones.
I paid $425 for a dell 27" 144hz 1440 monitor. I ran a RX580 with my LG 2560x1080 monitor and it had screen tearing. Went to G sync and it all went away. Using a 1070 now.
but why o why no 1440p benchmarks.. its more useful for this cards targetted buyers imo.. other youtubers have them yes but LTT is my go to reviewer
Realllllly should've gotten one when they came out, still sitting on my nano
LinusEarlyTips
haha
56 at least seems priced well, 1070ish performance at 100 dollars less (plus freesync). 64 is the more questionable product, doesn't justify its increase over 56 and doesn't quite reach the 1080.
it'll probably be more expensive than the 1070 here i presume. the 1070 is like 420€ here while the rx vega 64 is like 650€ here. since the TDP of the 54 is just 100$ lower i do presume that the vega 54 won't be below 500€.
When AMD graphics cards run better with Intel CPUs LMAO
Is it a good plan to buy the Vega 56 with an intel i7?
RGB Clan no. Get Ryzen.
maybe the intel cpu is faster for gaming
@@ICCUWANSIUT lol
Vega actually gets massively more power efficient when you use the balanced/power saving profiles and actually only result in a fairly small performance hit.
That said 1070-1080 performance at a cheaper price was all I really expected or wanted from Vega, most of us won't have the
cash lying around to pick up a $1000 GPU anyhow.
Not for me. I buy a GTX 1080Ti and a Ryzen. Best combo for me.
Is it just me or does Linus's watch look like a CPU?
Linus is a computer that's his CPU its on the outside to stay cooler so they make it look like a watch
Its a 122core 50mhz CPU so it gets hot
+popinmo Only 0.050 GHz? xD
Cooper Gates sorry just upgraded 2k ghz
Vega huh?
*GTX 1090 COMING NEXT WEEK!*
I honestly think that the bundles are not that bad for the launch of Vega. After a month or so I think that once companies like Sapphire and Asus start making their coolers for the Vega cards, AMD will change the price of the Liquid Cooled 64 from $699 to something more reasonable like $629 or $649. Or at least, I hope that's what they do
Linus is becoming danker every day
5:29 ?
wtf
It's called stupidly pointless editing.
Like having a shaky-cam next to one on a tripod.
you'll understand the edit when you watch all of linuses videos. basically linus said the same words some time ago in some other video so the clips were edited together. pretty cool imo
nah guys it's just them slipping subliminal messages
Because once again he is repeating himself about AMDs "strategy"
Vega was a fail. NVIDIA is laughing their ass off with VOLTA. Wayyy too late for release.
Plain Fitness it wasn't. Maybe at launch, but now it's competing with even the 1080
Unoriginal TH-cam Name it’s not
the vega core can compete with the 1080ti but it has its limited specifically power limits and a few other problems
Not anymore. Amd laughing at NVIDIA now for their $3000 gpu lmfao 😂😂😂
Yeah might consider buying one due to being around 150 GBP on ebay
OMG THAT FIRST ONE WAS ME LMFAOOOOOO
Did you buy a GTX 1080 or Vega.
I want to know this too
Yeah
Which one did you end up buying
"Wait for navi"
;)))
Or buy a GTX 1080ti instead
Thanks for testing productivity and not only games!
What does hbm2 even do? What does it help with?
NexusSpacey It's faster memory
2nd generation high bandwidth memory.
It's just a faster HBM
What just happened @5:29 ?
I saw it too! So weird.
k31than haha chill dudes. Its just sentences that linus always do to support amd bussiness plan. He told that a lot in his past videos.

Thank you!!! It worked! :)
Even NAVI is a mess
OMG LTT IS #12 ON TRENDING
Fuck all of this bullshit, I'm supporting AMD, I don't want them bankrupt, maybe the 64 wasn't everything I hoped and dreamed, for.. the past 5-6 months, but whatever, fuck that, it'll still run my games smooth.
Only problem now, I still can't find them in stock! fucking perfect! :)
iBoolGuy, nice but do yourself a favor and wait for partners custom Vega. I will wait for xfx to show up and if it is like Rx480 8gb, I will pull the trigger.
thesilviu silviu even if I were to buy reference card, it's nowhere out there, was just released and already gone, at this point I'm desperately hoping to get one..
Nah, they deserve to go bankrupt after this
If they go bankrupt, nvidia and intel prices will be unpayable, and if u compare improvement rates, AMD has improved a lot faster than nvidia in recent years. If they keep it, they'll be leading in performance and products in one or two years
funny how the "wait for navi" dude was right :D
