I can't believe I didn't think of this before- I've been sitting on a large diorama project for the better part of a year, when I realize I have heaps of PVA on hand as well as a bag of clean foundry sand. Cheers, thanks for reminding me to use my brain.
Interesting, I've been brushing on layers of wood glue, but it's rather messy and doesn't get the styrofoam uniformly hard. I hadn't thought of this method though, I think I'll give it a go on my next sculpture.
Thanks for demonstrating. If we are trying to achieve a hard coat as a protective layer and then hope to paint over the top layer, would you just apply another coat of PVA on top of the sand layer? Wait till it dries then paint over ?
Is it possible to spray a filler-primer on top of the sand coat? So you can get a "smooth" surface rather than a "sandy" surface? I need a technique to harden my styrofoam prop and to make it smooth.. epoxy resin is way to expensive :( But I don´t know if filler primer on sand would work? Ever tried it? :)

I always feels the same reactions like you do, when things got messy 😄😄...

Do you have to use waterproof pva if you're using it for an indoor model ir can you just use normal pva??
Do you think this would be stronger than PVA and paper or PVA and fabric? I'm making theatre scenery that needs to survive a tour and travel. Thanks!
Amazing help, thank you for sharing

If PVA is like white glue. Then you may have a crackle finish depending on the paint?
you can paint straight on top of the dry sand.
thanks for the advice. using it for 40k terrain 👍
Does the pva fill all the ugly Styrofoam holes?
What is PVA?
Same as white glue
PVA is a paint not glue
Nice and simple but effective.

Filler primer works well. I prefer using Jesmonite
Thanks
It will never last out in the elements.
Thanks
