Il me transporte.
A Rolls Royce of a voice! Powerful, yet capable of purring smoothly in cruise control. So many colours and so much emotion! Very interesting to hear these songs with sensitive and beautiful orchestration. His recent Wigmore Hall recital (Schumann and Brahms) blew me away - and everyone else in the audience! The Dichteliebe was the highlight of the evening for me. Bravissimo!

I am just discovering this amazing singer this morning! While listening to Classical MPR, they played a short lied of Schubert and I thought “Wow! Who is that? What a beautiful voice”! Thank you for posting this.
That’s exactly what I thought when I first heard him. Many Opera fans question why he’s my favorite baritone they think he’s horrible but I love him. Such a talented man.
I cannot but agree with both of you: his interpretation of these beautiful songs is flawless, and it is sung with knowing instinct for expressing nuances and compassion ("habe ja doch nichts begangen, daß ich Menschen sollte scheun -"), wie traurig!.
I must get used to a dramatic baritone singing Schubert with a full orchestra - it tends to sound more like opera than art songs. Some songs obviously benefit from this treatment. I'll have to listen again.
@@arlingtonmusicfanh2518There's a lot of composers who orchestrated Schubert Lieder. In the case of Berlioz: The work catalog of the website "imslp", based on the New Berlioz Edition, contains only the "Erlkönig". Looking up this song on imslp "arrangements and transcriptions", this website contains also versions by Liszt and by Reger. Benjamin Britten too made some orchestrations, and he completed fragments, and made a lot of recordings.... These cannot be found on imslp because of copyright restrictions.
@@helmutmuller2216 Thank you. I will check imslp. I wondered which or how many Schubert songs Berlioz orchestrated. It's good to know Erlkoenig is the one.
Thank you for sharing, this is interesting, beautifully sung , but please mention the names of the composer(s) who made the orchestra version(s) of these works composed originally for piano and voice, Thank you!.

"Der Erlkönig" erklingt in der Fassung von Reger. Das wird beim Mitlesen der Partitur deutlich: Motiv der linken Hand am Anfang im Fagott; mit der Singstimme gehende Holzbläser; Einsätze von Horn und Pauken im späteren Verlauf.
Certainly not, although F-D was his teacher. To me Goerne superseded his teacher. And the voice is totally different, he can do basso, whereas F-D is pure baritone.
What an absolutely incomparable, genius singer! My love for lieder began with listening to Matthias Goerne singing it. Pure magic! While there are many great singers singing this repertoire, he is just extraordinary, his expression, musicality - a miracle! Thank you for posting this concert, sharing this magic with us.
This is some first class singing - thank you. Im Abendrot sounded like a prayer and I cannot imagine it being a different way.
Such an intelectual yet emotional emotional singer. His instrument is gorgeous. I can't get enough of his interpretations.
Grand....Sensational.....BRAVO from Acapulco!

Vooral Im Abendrot is wonnderschoon; hemels!!!!

One of the best baritones ever. Such a rich, round, warm, plastic voice! I am an absolute fan of his art! Great renditions here.
How is a voice plastic?

Beautiful singing, yes! But have you ever heard of Warren, Bastianini, Cappuccilli, Zancanaro, Merrill ... just to remind some of them.
The Best.! IMO
@@pekkak.2724 Absolute win for goerne if it comes to DIE LIEDER
Bravo
Pure Gold from the voice of Matthias Goerne... like everything he sings!! What remarkable singing...

Totally agree, I might add that I have a feeling to be discovering Schubert, thanks to this true musician.
Remarkable! He has the depth of a basso and the range of a lyric baritone!
Remarkable singing indeed! Beautiful programme that brought me tears and inspiration
beautiful voice..
Forgive me for not saying so before, but what a beautiful concert. I'm truly touched. Das Abendrot brought me to tears. Thank you.

Amazing
I quite agree that he sounds like the wonderful Fischer-Dieskau, who taught him for years.
Singing after this seems more challenging.
Wonderful performance; TV broadcast compression kills all dynamics.
very interesting version
Memnon always makes me cry. I'm more of a fan of the original for piano/voice, but the Brahms orchestration is quite good.

The song starting at 30:55 is D957 (the displayed number is wrong).
‘Der Wegweiser’ is from D911 Winterreise, so not wrong.
D957 is Schwanengesang.
