    so i have a question :) here is the story first. i just got a little mixed breed fancy dwarf shrimp a few days ago and it was carrying eggs. not really sure what the species is. it looks like if a harlequin sulawesi crossed a glass or bee. anyway, it has since let most of the eggs go. why did it do this? i dont think they were ready to hatch, but she keeps hiding between rocks and then she comes out and there are less eggs. any suggestions? also how long does it generally take for the eggs to hatch?

  • @10pmgotosleep

    what they eat? any special things the need to survive besides the water parameters? btw beutiful setup

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +10pmgotosleep Thank you. They are scavengers and eat most anything. There are very specific foods made just for shrimp but they tend not to be very picky. I have found that they really really enjoy the New Era Marine Grazers - it's a soft disc made for saltwater tangs and other grazing fish. I break them up and the shrimp go crazy for it.

    Super nice video! I have been thinking about shrimp off and on...but they seem to fragile. Lately, I had to go down to a five gallon tank so I can't keep too much in it, so shrimp sounds like a great idea. I only have two questions. Can they be kept at 78 F? I have a thermostat that keeps this temperature constant and I can't change it. I also have two mollies? Are they good for shrimp? Again, awesome video...

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Artur Kedziora Sorry for the late reply. Shrimp prefer it a little bit lower than 78 but can definitely handle that temperature. The mollies however would likely try to eat the small dwarf varieties that I keep. Larger ghost shrimp, Amano shrimp, and bamboo shrimp would likely be fine.

    At time 1:31 what is that green carpet like material in the tank, is it natural algae or a minced moss ball? I really like the accent it offers the tank. Also what plants are you using, I love this set-up it inspired me to raise shrimp.

    I have a 15 gal freshwater tank, with a variety of tropical fish. I am thinking of getting some shrimp to help eat fish and plant debris, but I have no experience with freshwater shrimp. Can you recommend an ideal species for a beginner? Thanks!

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Valkyrie612 Amano shrimp are great for beginners. They get larger than many of the other dwarf shrimp and are very hardy. They eat algae which is a great benefit but unfortunately will not breed in your tank.

  • @Romeyn

    They look great and I'm loving the tanks. Couple questions, I'd like to know where you got your 5 x 5 tanks? I don't have a lot of space and we're not supposed to have any fish because I'm in a high-rise apartment. These tanks look perfect. Finally, I'm trying to get into plants as well. I'm a complete beginner with both--although I've had tons of tanks and fish in my life. What sort of setup would I need for both the shrimp and plants?

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      romeyn smith Smith Keeping plants and shrimp is pretty easy. a simple air driven sponge filter and a bright enough light and you're in business. if you have the money buy some shrimp substrate. many stores carry 5.5 gallon tanks, it's a standard dimension.

    What kinda air pump(s) are you running to power all those tanks. I recently set up a rack and I only have 5 ten gallons at the moment, this dual output pump I got is struggling to provide bubbles to all of them.

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      iammyantinerd I use an EcoPlus 8 outlet air pump in conjunction with a big old tetra whisper dual outlet airpump - I think it's the AP300. Both of these were just lying around; they were not intentionally purchased for this project but get the job done.

    sorry if i missed it, but are those 5 gal tanks? love your set up very clean. i have some concerns tho with the small tanks , arent they hard to water change? or do you have an over flow? thanks, i just subscribe and this is the first video ive seen from your channel

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL59hahaha Those are 5 gal. Water changes are a pain. If I were to do it over I think I'd go with 25g cubes and just focus on fewer strains. No overflows; I wanted each tank to be it's own system - I've got low pH, mid pH, and hopefully soon some high pH strains.

  • @dawgchyper91
    @dawgchyper91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video! :) Very informative and beautiful display of the shrimp! Just a couple questions because I plan on replicating the same setup as you. What kind of lighting system do you have and did you cycle your tanks for a few weeks before adding the shrimp? And for your air input, did you just share one air line tube for each rack with t connectors? I couldn't tell. I look forward to hearing from you and your knowledge :)

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dawgchyper91 I'm using beamswork LEDs. The color rendering isn't the most amazing but they are super cheap and put out a ton of light. I have a large air pump with a multi valve manifold. Standard T connectors don't work all that well as air will take the past of least resistance so whatever tank has the lowest water level gets all the air. Cycling periods totally depend on what substrate you use - You want to see a consistent zero ammonia and nitrite with just a tad of nitrate.

    • @dawgchyper91
      @dawgchyper91 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gastanker's Fish Vids Thank you so much for the response! What size Beamsworks did you have and what watt power? Thank you so much :) If you could provide a model number or a url link of some sort that would be perfect if you do not mind.

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      EcoComplete is a great substrate. I use inert sand for my neos. I don't use heaters but the room is temperature controlled with them in mind.

    • @StevenDavisPhoto
      @StevenDavisPhoto 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nice. ive since learned i can find black blasting sand that is inert and people do use it in their fish tanks. definitely gonna use that. what kinda sand are u using?

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a mixture but primarily black beauty (the blasting grit you are talking about) and either florite or ecocomplete

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are a bunch of good lights out right now that would work well in the rack. I'm using beamswork and green element because they are cheap and bright. current USA freshwater plus would also be enough light and might make the shrimp look a bit better - more expensive though

    Not sure if u still have this set up but & I realize u wanted them separated but aren't small tanks are harder to maintain? . How do/did you do it? ..how did u deal with the evaporation and shifting water parameters in small tanks.? Thx!

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smaller tanks are definitely harder. Due to these being shrimp it's not so bad. I feed very little so nitrate accumulation and absorption are pretty mush in sync. I cover the tanks to decrease evaporation but do top off frequently. My day starts and ends in the fish room so it's just part of the routine.

    What are your thoughts on using the Beamworks 9x 1 Watt led light for a Fluval Ebi/ Flora tank? Or the 6 x 3 Watt ones, I only ask because I'm pretty sure they're from the same company as your led you got for your larger tank

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      9x1w is plenty for the majority of aquatic plants. If you're going with dense low lying carpeting plants go with the 6x3w.

    • @gastanker

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Bukowski thanks. I run sponge filters, one per tank all running off of a large single air pump - very innexpensive. sponge filters can't hurt baby shrimp and provide a great surface area for scavenging food.

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the tanks rim to rim. I see no problem with this but if I wanted to I could space them apart about an 1/8 of inch to 1/4 inch which would allow power cords/airline tubing if I needed. The rack I purchased was specific to the size of these tanks so the fit is pretty spot on.

    Do you have problems with evaporation having a lid-less set up?
    Sweet video btw!! :)

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did have a bit of evaporation when uncovered but nothing too drastic. From time to time I would cover the tanks - I had 4' sheets of acrylic that I would place over each shelf of tanks.

      Not long, a bit over a year. They breed prolifically when happy though so although they are short lived as an individual a colony can last ages.

      Gastanker's Fish Vids Check this out. Its a crossbreeding chart and it tells you which shrimp will cross breed and which ones don't. I bet you could have fewer but nicer tanks with multiple tyhpes of shrimp.

    • @gastanker
      @gastanker  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Smith Thanks. I'm aware of these charts. simplified neos all cross and caridinas all cross. there are exceptions like Amano shrimp, and babaulti. these tanks were essentially all 1 type of neo with one type of caridinia.

    • @gastanker

      Kodiak Bear Home depot. The stand works but I wouldn't recommend it. It's poor build quality. You should be able to find very similar better ones.
