It is so endearing seeing how the anime handles the feeling of loss. Everyone who has had someone very important to them pass away can confirm, that this emotion is far more complex than just "sadness", as it is often portrayed in media. At first, it's usually just an overpowering numbness, like the brain blocking out any semblance of emotion to be able to assess the situation logically as a coping mechanism. It takes a few hours, sometimes even days of processing before the floodgates break and all those emotions burst out, all of the regrets, all of the memories, everything at once.

I broke down immediately after my grandpa passed, didn’t cry at the funeral, and then broke down intermittently months later at random times. Yes, everyone grieves differently.

I think the reason why Himmel put so many statues of himself was not out of vanity, but love - so Frieren wouldn't forget him. Himmel understood that 10 years was not even a blink of an eye for Frieren and she will forget him at some point, at least he thought she would. He knew Frieren wasn't going to fall for him but he was hopelessly in love with her. Now as she reflects back on her time with Himmel she's starting to pick up on all the things he said and did for her. It's a very endearing love story.
albeit a very bittersweet one. it used to make me wonder how a man who led the party to kill the demon king, doesn't have any family right after their journey ended, but watching this alongside the signs that Himmel really loved her makes this hurt even more. He couldn't have a family because he was waiting for Frieren to be his one, but elves in this story, amirite? They take an entire millennium to process emotions than what humans can process in a minute.
That is why it is difficult to understand the desire of human beings to be immortal, it is normal to be afraid of death, but I think that eternal loneliness would be worse, where everyone disappears.
even tho nobody should talk like that about what i will say but: i would rather kill myself before i see everything and everyone i hold dear vanishing before my eyes than to ever consider being immortal for context everyone who understands german should listen to Schandmaul's song Stein der Weisen..... this song sums it up pretty good about why it is better to be mortal
Its mostly cause everyone is different. No doubt that many would find it suffering to experience the loneliness of immortality But i see it as an introvert extrovert thing. Some people are socially wired differently that they’d enjoy immortality and loneliness quite well.
@@zefellowbud5970 It's not like you will remain extroverted or introvert thought-out your entire life thou. If your life is infinite you will definitely feel the grip of Loneliness.
@zefellowbud5970 No introverts are so introverted that they thrive with 0 human interaction or human relationships. That's simply not how humans are made. Some have managed to cope with it, but it's not ever the ideal. I might get exhausted by most social interactions, but I still care greatly for the few people I have in my life and I would suffer without their presence.
It is not the fear of death it is the desire to experience more things. But that is the meaning of death the very end of one's existence there's nothing more you can do on this planet. I think someone to be immortal must love Life's so much in a meaningful way to tolerated living a immortal life. the people we have held special in our hearts will eventually be gone from us even in this mortal life they may still hold a part of us but will still have to come to terms with it there passing from this world the best thing we can do is remember the part of them in our heart
"In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory." -High King Aragorn Elessar Telcontar
"The goal is not to live forever, but to create something that will." In that context, it doesn't just have to be tangible things like statues, books or whatever to record history, but ideals - the strive to do good - to forge companionship no matter the background of the person. Himmel embodied this really well because after all - "it's what Himmel would do."
At first it was sad but still okay because we don't have much time with Himmel, but it hits harder and harder as we see more of what he did and what he had left behind...
After One Piece, the quotes of living life without regret always made me cry. So the fact that Himmel here had no regret, and lived a good life, it made me tear up
what a wonderful anime...this scene hits way harder after you've seen the several flashbacks during the series...even at 1:20 there is so much detail e.g. heiter giving a pat to her head...you know the rest.. 😢
poor Himmel, the damn love of your life comes back as young as the day he left, but... she is the love of your life. You can only grow old by looking at her (even if she ages) and being happy... the great Argentine Gardel said " a shadow you will soon be, a shadow the same as me" in one of his tangos...
The life immortals or long lifers. The unbearable sadness and detachment from life, i feel bad for him. But it's kinda funny, watching her adventures, seeing people gets old while she's still the same.
I relate so much to this scene. My grandmother died a few months ago and I only started crying when seeing the coffin lowered into the ground. Luckily everyone was pretty good at understanding how grief hits people differently and everyone in the family was being supportive of one another.
i can't help but to recall an excerpt from Tolkien about how the elves first encountered man and mortality. "And when Beor laid dead of no wound or grief; but stricken by age, the Eldar saw for the first time the swift waning of the life of men and the death of weariness that they knew not in themselves. And they grieved greatly for the lose of their friend. But Beor at the last relinquished his life willingly and passed in peace. And the Eldar wondered much at the strange fate of men for in all their lore there was no account of it and it's end was hidden from them."
Aaaaaahhh this scene. This anime is really a masterpiece. How I wish they make a prequel when their party started their journey to defeat the demon king. I really like Himmel's character.
Knowing that it's from Madhouse, I might try this one. Who knows, Wolf's Rain was my favourite anime during childhood, so it is clear that my heart loves heart-warming dramas.
It hits harder when you rewatch this scene because during the first time watching this episode, you don't really know Frieren that much. But after finishing the whole show you finally understand Frieren as a character and you know how much sadness and disappointment it takes to make her absolutely bawl her eyes out like that.
Is no one gonna talk about Old Himmel’s absolutely top tier mustache? Like holy hell he must’ve put real time into making that thing look as baller as it does
It's beautiful how Frieren's friends syncronizly tried to comfort her when she finally cries. For them she meant so much. She just did not understand. This manga/anime is marvelous.
Those people can call Frieren, Eisen and Heiter "heartless" all they want, but knowing Himmel he wouldn't care if they shed a tear at his funeral. He'd be happy they were there together one last time.
This shows why Skips warn Mordecai and Rigby that being immortal is not a good thing to have of the pain of losing those you know to old age. I feel so sad for Frieren knowing she never felt so sad in her long life losing Himmel before her very eyes.
The worst thing is not understanding how important someone is until they're gone, and not being able to tell them how much they mean to you. Regret is a bitch. Tell the people you love you love them. It will mean so much to them, and it'll mean so much to you on reflection. It's amazing how a cartoon from Japan can be so powerful. No wonder people have fallen in love with it, myself included!
I like to think Himmel knew in a way that he meant pretty everything to Frieren. Notice how his other comrades quickly comforted Frieren before she broke down crying. If they knew, surely Himmel did. Of course, it doesn't take away the regret of not doing what could have been done.
theres nothing more validating than seeing your close friends acknowledge the life you lived and respected your wishes to not shed a tear. even tho they were sad they still sent himmel off with a smile
Frieren is such a great story. Showing us how lonely living for thousands of years would be. People are popping in and out of existence all around her and some of them make an impact on her life while others she barely notices. She measures everything in her own time frame and it feels like people live so fast, she's barely able to take in their presence before they're gone for good. The whole part where they meet the monk Kraft. He is Frieren in the future when people no longer remember her and the hero's party killing the Demon Lord.
Reminds me of one scene in Seven Deadly Sins, King (a fairy) and Diane (a giant) were looking after each other in a harsh world. They spoke to a kindly human who offered them directions and shelter, King and Diane stayed in a cave for a while thanks to the kindly human. They emerged out of the cave after quite some time, spoke to a another kindly human who resembled the last one the two spoke to - only to find out that this human they were speaking to was the grandson of the human King and Diane met before going in the cave. Makes you really think about the warped sense of time between long lifers and those who barely reach 100 years old.
In this anime, I learned that if a being grants you immortality, you need to have a mental manipulator as well, or you will end up as an old, depressed hag, with multiple mental illness.
I love how frieren is falling in love with himmel long after his death. Now she is understanding himmel like she never did before when they were together. It doesn't matter that himmel is not present anymore, what matters is that frieren is now understanding him, appreciating him and loving him. And himmel most probably knew this and that's why he never "BETRAYED" his feelings for frieren by marrying and loving another woman which would have been a right choice. But himmel might have known that despite him not being present with frieren anymore, frieren WILL reciprocate his feelings, will appreciate him and understand him, and that is what most probably mattered to him. The assurance that even if he had died, and it might take a long time, but frieren will love him, and that's what is happening.
I brought my best friend to his resting place. I didn't break my stoic expression while I lowered him to his grave. It was when I was asked to read some of the "Farewell" cards was that I completely broke down. The way words are used.. Always remember how easy it is to hurt someone.
Death of a loved ones hurts when you organize your thoughts. The best, the worst, the fights, the laughs. But realize, that that…are the only memories you can make with them. No drinks, no more falls, no more smiles. Hurts to lose what you once always had until its gone
A while back I was hanging out with my girlfriend and we went to a grocery store to pick up some groceries because her dad was cooking. The Death of Himmel is like the Battle of Yavin. Part of a calendar or timeline? So thousands of years before the Death of Himmel, it was an epic era? The demons could just be mutated humans, elves, and demi-humans devoid of emotions? No telling what the Demon King before the Demon King was like. Imagine the demon alliance with dragons and angels fighting the Gods and Titans of Old.
It’s beautifully sad how it only registered for me the moment it registered for Frieren when she said “Why didn’t I try to get to know him better” The voice acting is phenomneal, you can hear the longing and regret as the passage of time registers for both the audience and Frieren that Himmel is gone, forever.

"Read my books, Mark."
Frieren: You wrote a grimoire? Is it in this chest?
Mimic: *nom*
I dont know if im going senile or what, but I’ve teared up every episode
I don't know your age, but as a 40 years old man, I can assure you a scene like that will make me cry big time.
Nah it's just that good.
The OST is just way too fucken good. And I'm not a thousand year-old elf but the overall theme resonated with me. Rekindling the bonds of your past and figuring out that what you had was special... Even if what seems like a short amount of time to you.
Literally, this anime is so good
me too man, this fucking ost made me cry in almost all episodes t.t
It is so endearing seeing how the anime handles the feeling of loss. Everyone who has had someone very important to them pass away can confirm, that this emotion is far more complex than just "sadness", as it is often portrayed in media. At first, it's usually just an overpowering numbness, like the brain blocking out any semblance of emotion to be able to assess the situation logically as a coping mechanism. It takes a few hours, sometimes even days of processing before the floodgates break and all those emotions burst out, all of the regrets, all of the memories, everything at once.
so media portrayed it inaccurately?
You know its gonna be an insanely good Anime when the 1st episode got you in tears.
And so many episodes later, this is the best anime i think i've ever watched.
With every episode that passes where I see more of Frieren as she is day to day, the more I realize how monumental her crying for Himmel is. She was in love with this man
When Himmel said we have a long life ahead of us I always figured he wanted to confess and live with her till he died.
But he didnt, he knew frieren will live for so many years, and he didnt wanted make her sad.
But he still tried to help every person he could and let statues of himself and his friends to not be forgotten and make frieren not feel alone.
@@Lukozzz234 so he made sad himself and her too when he gone. He could get forever young elf wife, spend his short life with her and give her many more memories. But he decided to not hurt her feelings. And nobody happy at the end. Yeah, elves are (almost) asexual but he didn't have sex with her either so nothing changed anyway. Just don't be a cowards, guys, there aren't any eternal things under the sun. Even love. Even elven love. Don't think about how "worthy" are you, it's not for you to decide. Live today so you will not regret tomorrow. Your wife will outlive you anyway. It's bigger chance for you to die earlier so get as much as you can.
@@АлександрСимон-п6и Bro literally put a ring on her and she still didn't get it. Really isn't Himmel's fault here...
@@kaiz1845 he defeated the demon lord but wasn't brave enough to just confess his feelings straight even knowing elves can understand feelings harldly. It's not only his fault but he didn't try all posibilities.
@@АлександрСимон-п6и Dude how do you get more clear than kneeling down and putting a ring on a girl's ring finger lol.
This hits hard after reading the last chapter of the manga. Himmel was one of the best hero's.
Noooo there are more sad things in the manga I thought it would be toned down from now on I can't handle it 😢
spoil me pls
@@gowther1973 spoilers pls 😢
@@piiurmy2912 I haven't read the manga that's why I said I thought it would be toned down idk what's gonna happen
@@rishavdhariwal4782 you can sum it up with Frieren being cold to them saying things like 'you will die soon'. I understand her perspective being almost immortal but still... poor Himmel
I am the type who had relatives die and could not cry at the funeral procession or the church or when they put them to the grave. However when i was alone and that feeling finally sank in, i sobbed. Everyone grieves in their own way it is just it takes sometime for some of us to really accept it.
I broke down immediately after my grandpa passed, didn’t cry at the funeral, and then broke down intermittently months later at random times.
Yes, everyone grieves differently.
I remember when I received news my grandma fell off the stairs and died, I was just in total shock, but a couple of months later it hit me that she was really gone and I broke down at midnight in my bed.
@@zachanikwanoSame dude, I thought I’d cry at my Grandad’s funeral but I didn’t know how to react. It took me a year before a stray memory got me bawling
Felt the same when my grandma died
The more episodes passes, the more you know how cool Himmel was! its heartbreaking
The fact they added the clink when someone throws a item at the dwarfs helmet had me lose it
I think the reason why Himmel put so many statues of himself was not out of vanity, but love - so Frieren wouldn't forget him.
What I love about the character is that she seems so cold and unmoved by anything, but Frieren feels very deeply inside.
That is why it is difficult to understand the desire of human beings to be immortal, it is normal to be afraid of death, but I think that eternal loneliness would be worse, where everyone disappears.
even tho nobody should talk like that about what i will say but: i would rather kill myself before i see everything and everyone i hold dear vanishing before my eyes than to ever consider being immortal
for context everyone who understands german should listen to Schandmaul's song Stein der Weisen..... this song sums it up pretty good about why it is better to be mortal
Its mostly cause everyone is different.
No doubt that many would find it suffering to experience the loneliness of immortality
But i see it as an introvert extrovert thing.
Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory."
-High King Aragorn Elessar Telcontar
LOTR is so powerful that it still lives in the hearts of many people.
"The goal is not to live forever, but to create something that will."
In that context, it doesn't just have to be tangible things like statues, books or whatever to record history, but ideals - the strive to do good - to forge companionship no matter the background of the person. Himmel embodied this really well because after all - "it's what Himmel would do."
At first it was sad but still okay because we don't have much time with Himmel, but it hits harder and harder as we see more of what he did and what he had left behind...
you know it would be fcking sad moment when Frieren started crying
For a character you only spend maybe five minutes getting to know before watching him succumb to old age, it certainly hits hard watching that scene.
0:20 I thought Halo song kicked in for a moment 😀
This anime really makes people think about their lives.
The life immortals or long lifers. The unbearable sadness and detachment from life, i feel bad for him. But it's kinda funny, watching her adventures, seeing people gets old while she's still the same.
The pain of being an immortal (or at least having a long life span). Knowing that you’ll outlive everyone you knew and loved
Bro tried to sneak voices from mushoku tensein and thought we wouldn't notice
After my grandfather's death i feel Frieren
This anime hits me in the feelings every damn episode
A real person who truly loved the person who died cries when they realize that they are no longer there in their daily lives...
Himmel the most ancient chad ever existed.
I relate so much to this scene. My grandmother died a few months ago and I only started crying when seeing the coffin lowered into the ground. Luckily everyone was pretty good at understanding how grief hits people differently and everyone in the family was being supportive of one another.
"Dont pat me head"
Aww so sad. She doesn't believe she deserves praise
i can't help but to recall an excerpt from Tolkien about how the elves first encountered man and mortality.
"Regrets carrying on through memories".... Man, those are the most painful memories to have 💔
At first I thought "Haha Himmel is wearing a magic item that changes looks to prank his party members" then
*BOOM*
Himmel's Funeral scene
Knowing that it's from Madhouse, I might try this one.
Who knows, Wolf's Rain was my favourite anime during childhood, so it is clear that my heart loves heart-warming dramas.
Paprika by satoshi kon was also by madhouse. U should try watching it
It hits harder when you rewatch this scene because during the first time watching this episode, you don't really know Frieren that much. But after finishing the whole show you finally understand Frieren as a character and you know how much sadness and disappointment it takes to make her absolutely bawl her eyes out like that.
And there it is. The curse of living forever. You might be eternal but everything around isn't.
Man, when the current chapters of the manga get animated.
This first episode will hurts twice as bad.
I knew this was gonna be in my top 3 when the first episode had me crying
Is no one gonna talk about Old Himmel’s absolutely top tier mustache? Like holy hell he must’ve put real time into making that thing look as baller as it does
After reading the manga , you would know how much Himmel loved Frieren
I didn't realize when I saw the first episode how significant it is that she cried for Himmel. I didn't understand her character or who she is yet.
this episode hits soooooo different watching it the second time after finishing the anime....
so truee, it hit very different
Love that this series focus on memories that you left with family/friends.. because thats what remains after you gone
It's beautiful how Frieren's friends syncronizly tried to comfort her when she finally cries. For them she meant so much. She just did not understand. This manga/anime is marvelous.
Don't pat her head though
I was surprised by Eisen.
When a dwarf comforts an elf, that's serious friendship.
To be fair, To Frieren 10 years to us is like three months from her prospective.
This is a beautifully written and drawn anime.
I brought my best friend to his resting place. I didn't break my stoic expression while I lowered him to his grave.
It was when I was asked to read some of the "Farewell" cards was that I completely broke down.
The way words are used.. Always remember how easy it is to hurt someone.
Heiter aged so well. The author did Himmel so dirty in comparison. I love it 😂
Death of a loved ones hurts when you organize your thoughts. The best, the worst, the fights, the laughs. But realize, that that…are the only memories you can make with them. No drinks, no more falls, no more smiles. Hurts to lose what you once always had until its gone
Frieren crying got me all sad all the way to my meow meow.
50 years passed and 30 more after Himmel died ; How the priest lived longer than Himmel ?
A while back I was hanging out with my girlfriend and we went to a grocery store to pick up some groceries because her dad was cooking. My mom worked at the grocery store and when I saw her she said she had to tell me something but the she started crying and said she would tell me later. When my girlfriend and I got back to her house I said to my girlfriend “I have a feeling my dog died” she said not to think like that and that it will be fine. When my mom got off work she came to my girlfriend’s house. I asked my girlfriend to stay inside. I went out to the car and I was right. My dog died. I didn’t want to cry and I tried my best not to. My girlfriend could tell I was upset. I wouldn’t hug her because I knew I would cry. She hugged me anyway and I cried. The worst part was going home and not seeing my dog waiting there.
Sorry felt like typing this. I think it helped.
I like how most of the time when Frieren remembers Himmel she looks up at the sky, since it means sky/heaven in German.
In manga more long journey frieren has.... she become more love to himmel... realize himmel is best person... every kindness himmel gave to people... slowly help frieren in future
I didn't cry when my elders passed. It is good to cry to let it out at the time, because if you don't, you do so many times later. I envy people who forget easily. I really do.
It’s criminal to cut this scene up and disrupt the beautiful music…
That’s how I am…I can’t express my feelings until those precious moments hit me
これはもう泣きそうになった😭
This hits different after the latest manga chapter
The Death of Himmel is like the Battle of Yavin. Part of a calendar or timeline? So thousands of years before the Death of Himmel, it was an epic era? The demons could just be mutated humans, elves, and demi-humans devoid of emotions? No telling what the Demon King before the Demon King was like. Imagine the demon alliance with dragons and angels fighting the Gods and Titans of Old.
I kind of figured that the (X) Years Since The Hero Died was more of a narrative device for the audience rather than an actual in-universe thing.
@@Veqtronicthe way I see it, its more for Frieren, bcs the death of Himmel changee her
It is because its all about himmel after all
Also the demons remained hidden while Himmel was alive
it really hits different after progressing in the story

This anime had no business being this sad in the first episode, and yet I felt sad. God-tier anime for real.
It’s beautifully sad how it only registered for me the moment it registered for Frieren when she said “Why didn’t I try to get to know him better”
The voice acting is phenomneal, you can hear the longing and regret as the passage of time registers for both the audience and Frieren that Himmel is gone, forever.
