Walk with me along Sierra Madre Street in Barangay Highway Hills, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.
The street is named after the Sierra Madre range, the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Spanning over 540 kilometers, it runs from the province of Cagayan down to the province of Quezon, forming a north-south direction on the eastern portion of Luzon, the largest island of the archipelago.
The name "Mandaluyong" is believed to have originated from a Tagalog phrase "Mandaluyong mga lugar," which roughly translates to "a place with many hills." This name is descriptive of the city's geographical features, as Mandaluyong is characterized by its hilly terrain and numerous hills or elevated areas.
Before it became a city, Mandaluyong was a rural area with a predominantly agricultural landscape. As urbanization and development occurred over the years, Mandaluyong transformed into a bustling urban center within Metro Manila.
