I get the Venice and Rhodes part, but where does Carthage come into it?
Pretzelbomb well Carthage was a military republic who were rulers of the Mediterranean before Rome and was colonised by the phonecias the way the slaves colonised bravos they rule over the narrow sea and they were a merchant republic
@@pretzelbomb6105 Well Carthage in ancient times was a dominant naval force and naval trade.They had been dominant on the mediteranian sea and outside it in some areas.The population and religion was mixed.Great infrastructure and ship yards.

it’s videos like this that make we want to write better world building. I often think these days “what would templin say about you/is this enough for temprin?” And it motivates me to write more
If ya want I can give ya some tips on world building that I found helpful; though please keep in mind that I'm in NO WAY an expert on this subject matter and can only give my personal experience and tips I received throughout my life to others. But if you're still interested, let me know and I'll tell ya, ok? =)
For the record, when Braavos revealed itself to the world, there was no attampt by the freehold to recapture it. It was too far north and Valyria had its own problems at that time.
Like killing people? the valyrians took braavos as nothing, they didn't care of it.

A Mixture Of Venice And Rhodos Nice
Venice, Carthage, Rhodes and the Republic of Rome (Death be to Kings).
An amazing episode! The world that George R. R. Martin created is so rich in history, background and realism that makes these kind of videos so good. It ranks with Lord of the Rings universe of J. R. R. Tolkien, the worlds of Star Trek (Gene Roddenberry) and Star Wars (George Lucas), and the Unbeliever series of Stephen R. Donaldson. Because of their deep richness of lore, You could do years on any one of these fantasy worlds. No one seems to be able to produce these kinds of videos better than The Templin Institute.

Braavos is really similar to Venice, for example the Arsenal of Braavos, which has the same function as the real life Venetian Arsenal. Both sit on lagoons, being its islands separated by canals. George R. R. Martin definitely took inspiration from Venice to create Braavos.
