    I love when you say "Just do what makes the most sense to you" As a beginner, sometimes it's hard to wrap my brain around some of the more technical stuff, but it helps build my confidence knowing you've given the thumbs up to fudge it a little. Haha! Thanks for sharing this tutorial, I'll definitely be trying this in the near future!

      I agree that a big part of learning how to sew and design is the ability to improvise🙂

    I really like this dress! I would love to see a zero-waste DIY series, I don't like it when I have fabric left but too little to make something of it.

      You can make a matching scrunchy if you have long enough hair, fabric bracelets, make a it into a quilt, bookmarks, coasters etc

      If you like historical costuming you can make a bum roll or you can use fabric scraps to stuff toys and pillows

      You can always make a towel for the kitchen with the rests or pillowcase for example. I mean with multiple fabric parts that is that you save over some time.

    Such a cute dress a little gathering tip if you don’t mind. In the drapery world they zig zag over really thick thread I think it’s drapery thread. This allows you to gather without your thread breaking and then after you’ve sewn things in place one little snip and you can pull the thick thread out. I hope you give this a try. I don’t gather anything anymore with out using this trick 😁

  • @judychapman1868
    @judychapman1868 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    April, I really enjoyed watching your video! I have a sewing hack for gathering…. I use kitchen string and a wide zig-zag stitch close to the edge of my fabric to be gathered. After attaching the gathered pieces to each other simply pull out the string; I find that you don’t have to be so careful not to break the thread while pulling to form a gather. Judy

    I have been looking for something relatively easy to do since having a bilateral mastectomy with no reconstruction. With patterned fabrics, gathers, and the straps, this will camouflage beautifully. Plus - bonus, pockets! Thank you so much!

    Could I make a small request? I can see in your videos when I pause/slow down that it looks like you always finish your seams properly, but you never actually mention it. Since you have a lot of newer sewists as viewers who might be following your tutorial, they may not even be aware that they should do that. Maybe this is a small pet peeve that only troubles me, but it seems like it would be beneficial to your followers. Otherwise, I really enjoy your videos, and I’m tempted to make this dress myself!

    As someone new to sewing, I've been too overwhelmed to cut into any of the nice fabric I bought (soo expensive). First glace I would've never known this projects gathers were done with the stitching as opposed to an elastic... idk if that makes sense, but your process was so calming, and very easy to absorb and learn from. thank you soo much for simplifying AND picking such a cute design to break down so thoroughly! Also the ... sewing magnet BLEW my mind. I'm sooo terrible with sewing straight so I usually don't bother even trying projects. This was a game changer ty for mentioning it

    • @xXAshHoleXx
      @xXAshHoleXx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The hardest part about it is starting! ☺ I was really proud of but also embarrassed by my first sewing project. Made a big ol circle skirt out of a red sheet I found at the thrift store. It's all sorts of Frankensteined up and the hem looks atrocious! BUT, to be honest, nobody really notices! I still wear it all the time 6 years later. The thing that made me feel more confident was sewing with old sheets. That way, if I messed up, it wasn't that big of a deal because I only paid what, five bucks? 💕 Hope this helps! and remember! Practice Makes PROGRESS! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

    This is SO cute! It's the first set waste pattern I've seen that i actually want to wear. I love the tiers width and the shoulder pieces. I will have to buy more fabric (or find a big piece in my stash) since I am 5'8". And I don't often see 60" woven fabrics so I'll re-do the math for 45. Thanks for "showing your work", as math teachers say. That will make it relatively easy to do. I think I'm also going to try out those shoes!

    Ive been doing a lot of 0 waste dresses and skirts for a larp I play. The theory behind it is that in the post apoc, there isnt a lot of fabric to go around, so you wanna use up every last piece, but also make it functional and even when there are zombies at the door, you deserve to feel cute.
