      Mega Pidgeot is awesome and in Indigo League Pidgeot looks very majestic. But then Let's Go made it unable to ride, and thanks to the scaling (something rather accurate in Let's Go) it seems barely larger than Pidgeotto! Pidgeot got screwed over in Let's Go. Still a likeable mon imo.

    I love these little individual Pokemon breakdowns of even classic Pokemon we've known forever. If you're looking for suggestions (once you've flown past your bird binge), I'd love to hear you break down the Lotad line. It's always been such a bizarre evolution to me of "why does a lotus platypus turn into an energetic dancing pineapple duck?"

    • @randomasgray
      @randomasgray 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Not sure about the whole line but Ludicolo is a bit odd as it combines 2 well known plants from the Amazon with generic poncho and sombrero. The 2 plants btw are the pineapple and Victoria amazonica or amazon lily pad. That is that giant lily pad that can actually support the weight of kids and you see pictures of all the time. So I'm sure Ludicolo is just one big reference to South American cultures with the plants being the river basin and the clothing being the Andes mountain people, such as the Incas.

    • @useruser-my6op
      @useruser-my6op 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Gen 1 had a lot of gems. The stronger designs were those that aim for weird, nondescriptive monsters like Weezing, Exeggutor, Lickitung, Gengar, Clefable, and many more. And when they reference animals, they don't just take an animal and slap a typing on it; they either mix traits from different related animals, like how Arcanine is a dog-lion-tiger thing, or how Eevee is a fox-rabbit creature; or they do something different to the design, like how Tentacruel doesn't really look like a jellyfish, or how Starmie is not exactly a replica of a starfish.
      Of course, Gen 1 is not perfect, I mean Dewgong exists, but I really appreciate the ideas behind the best designs of that generation.

      Honestly the Egyptian theme seems to only be in theory it doesn’t really seem to be Egyptian at all in my opinion. This entire theory seems like a stretch. Gen 1 pkmn are pretty much literally exactly what they look like they didn’t seem to be designing pkmn the same way they do these days.

      Agreed, it's simple, but brimming with stuff. I don't know if I agree on a regional though, because then I'd be replacing my Pidgeot from a personal perspective, and it's already perfect as is (though had the mega done that would've been cool, or pure flying no reason it needed to keep normal). Fearow could use a regional and new evo though, I even made one for a fan thing I'm doing.

      Meanwhile you have Ninetails the literal kitsune. Game Freak did design Pokemon that way it just wasn't quite as prevalent or as obvious. It could very well be just a coincidence, but I doubt it. It might not be quite as deep as being a sun god, maybe just inspired by hieroglyphs.

    Lockstin, Pidgey is actually based on the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, also known as 'suzume' in Japan. Rose-breasted Grosbeak aren't even native to Japan...
    Edit: I was stupid in my original comment, but I'll leave it up for posterity's sake. As some commenters in the replies have stated, a Pokemon can indeed have multiple inspirations, and especially inspirations that are not native to the real life area the region is based on.
    That being said, the European Tree Sparrow has no small part in Japanese culture. The fluttering movements of the birds inspired the traditional *suzume odori* dance- which Sensu Form Oricorio is partially inspired by.

      Also, I am pretty sure Pangolin don't live in Japan either.
      Also not native to Japan? Rattlesnakes.
      So, the fact that it isn't native to Japan is meaningless here.
      If you want to argue that where the face markings come from, sure ... but the argument of "It can't be this species" because that species isn't native to Japan is just flawed.

    I love that the Pidgey line (and most of Gen 1 designs that reference animals) can't really be pinned into a specific animal, but rather are ambiguous mix of different things. That's what I like about the earlier Gen designs. Nowadays, one can immediately identify what animal inspired a particular design.

    Loved this video. Pidgeot is my all time favorite pokemon! In fact, I got into pokemon because of Pidgeot. All the way back when Pokemon red and blue came out in the US, there was an ad in a magazine. It was a bunch of Pokemon with a net over them and said "Got ya!" Pidgeot was one of the pokemon under the net. Back then I was obsessed with birds and Pidgeot was just so awesome I had to play the game.

    A little more detail about Egyptian mythology. Ra is not so much THE god of the sun, but rather A god of the sun. And he is not the sun itself. Just in charge of taking care of it, which is why the sun sits on his head. A few other Egyptian gods have also worn the sun crown. And the sun itself is a separate god named aten. One pharoah who named himself akhenaten, pushed egypt to a brief period of monotheism, where aten was the only god. Of course after he died they completely abandoned that idea but it's an interesting bit of ancient history nonetheless.

      Okay, maybe this will make you miss them less.
      1.) It would be better for many mons to get evolutions instead of Megas, like Mawile and Audino. 2.) The gimmick was given to A.) Pokemon that didn't need it. (Rayquaza, Mewtwo, Metagross, Latios/Latias, Charizard etc.) B.) Pokemon that would have looked much better if they had an evolution instead. (Audino [yeah i don't think audino was good even after the mega], Mawile, Medicham, etc.) C.) Garchomp, which actually becomes worse due to a decrease in speed, ultimately making it's high attack stat not as worth-while. Or D.) Pokemon that can't really compare to the strongest of them. (Kangaskan, Scizor, Loppuny, etc.)
      Also, has anybody else noticed that almost nobody used it in the story? The only one that I can recall are the leaders of Magma and Aqua, and Steven using them. Ultimately, Megas weren't as good as people thought they were. They looked cool, but that was about the only good thing they did.

      Also your point A is sort of conflicting with your final paragraph, mostly just Rayquaza and Metagross, because Rayquaza was for lore and story purposes, while Metagross was for story because it's the champion's signature Pokemon. The starters didn't really need it I suppose, especially Kanto if anything they should've given the Kalos starters megas, kind of when the Kanto pandering started, but it wasn't as much of a problem then because it was just happening. Part of the problem with gimmicks going forward, introducing new ones and just completely removing older ones like megas, then they think by SwSh oh Charizard needs another fricken form when it didn't. Frankly I'm sick of new gimmicks, they should stop them, or at the very least only 1 per new game on a new console. For example SwSh didn't need giga/dynamaxing, especially since there's so much more they could've done with making Pokemon Kaijus, they either should've skipped it, then have gen 9 have a new gimmick, or have a new gimmick in SwSh and build on it (like megas did) in following games. Remakes especially could've been a good opportunity to explore megas (forgot about PE, yeah some trainers had megas in that game, Red, Blue, Green, your rival, might be it can't remember, barely remember that game outside of oh Green finally exists). Like... I mean so many things wrong with BDSP, but they could've brought megas back for it too, and given us new ones, going forward, fans like megas, that's a perfect way to keep that train going even if it's slowed down, and thus future remakes would also be tied to the mega timeline while the original games are on the non mega timeline.
      Also are you a competitive player? I'm not, that could be the difference of our opinions, granted XY I didn't use any megas because I only use new Pokemon in new games, and no Kalos Pokemon had megas if I recall (outside Diancie a legendary which would've broken rule 2, and... I mean it wasn't available until ORAS anyways).
      Sorry I'm adding even more, just thought of more to add after I posted the comment and I think I was running out of room anyways. There is a lot megas had going for them or that could've been utilized again in the future, there was so much and still room for potential in the concept, and sooo many fans loved mega evolution, while newer gimmicks no one really cares about or like, Z moves were ok but they were an Alola exclusive it's fine if they don't show up, megas on the other hand established a whole new WORLD that they exist in. Not even mentioning them in games then also causes confusion in the lore, like in SwSh no one mentions if megas exist or not... sooo do they? Maybe Giga/dynamaxing was made to combat megas, maybe it is its own phenomenon, could both exist in the same timeline or not?

    • @IgnatiusBlaze4
      @IgnatiusBlaze4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sheepmage5485
      I didn't mind z moves, it was unique enough, and Pokemon that didn't get megas got exclusive z moves like... Pikachu got 2, Mew got 1, unlike the Kalos starters their starter's got in on the gimmick (though bond Greninja existed then, which is sort of like a mega), and megas existed alongside them. Giga/dynamax on paper sounds interesting, but... I thought it was lazy because it was a combination of the 2, there's so much more potential behind making Pokemon into Kaiju size, and once again they pandered to Kanto, with megas and the 1st regionals it was fine... but why would I use my Mega Charizard X that was physical and was fine being a mega. It then seemed redundant to give it a giga, and it felt like a reference to Godzilla... (looks at Tyranitar)... but one already exists, why wouldn't it get a giga? Then Butterfree don't get me wrong, I love it, it deserves a gimmick... but there's plenty of moth Pokemon if you want a Mothra reference, heck even one in SwSh, and killing 2 birds with 1 stone make it the signature Pokemon of Melony instead of Lapras... sorry for that tangent just bugs me a bit that they prioritized Kanto Pokemon, I like them as much as everyone else but there's over 800 Pokemon give attention to them.
      As for how I would've handled them in general rather than combining z moves and megas they really should've tied it to weather. Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, all these giant monsters in movies and shows do 1 thing, they majorly impact their environments, alter landscapes, create radiation, cause storms, earthquakes, floods, etc, I think that would've been cooler and would've made it more unique.
      I do agree hats a re a bit silly, feel like something else could've been done to signify what type they'll become, but I do love the idea of the gimmicks, it's unique changing a Pokemon's typing... though it conflicts with a fan thing I'm doing lol.

    • @sheepmage5485
      @sheepmage5485 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IgnatiusBlaze4 I agree, they pander to Kanto way to much and give way to much attention to the golden boys, Charizard, Eevee and Pikachu. But, a little bit in their defense (just a little bit) as you said their are over 800 Pokémon its bound to happen that some would be neglected and fall into obscurity. Remember Maractus? Me either😄.
      Your idea for the dynamaxing/Gynamxing sounds interesting and I'm a really big fan of Godzilla and Kaiju's in general. And while I did enjoy Dynamxing it would have been great to see more done with it as you suggested. Sadly Gamefreak keeps abandoning old gimmicks to push new ones, only to abandoning those in the next game. I really wish they just stick with something and refine it. You know?

    You should do a video on the correlation of Pokemon stats to real world measurable values.
    Pidgeot, for example, has a base speed stat of 101. That means that a fully invested Pidgeot with perfect IVs and speed boosting nature will reach a highest speed stat of 331.
    That information has no value until we plug in the information that Pidgeot reach max speeds of Mach 2.
    Where it gets tricky is that it's never clearly stated if that is just at base speed, or if it needs to use specific speed boosting moves like Agility that raise your speed stat, and although the move Tailwind did not exist before Generation 4, a tailwind is a naturally occurring phenomenon that can apply regardless, but it is important to understand what the MOVE Tailwind does in Pokemon, which is to double the speed of the party.
    So, let's try to calculate what is the most likely interpretation of max speeds of Mach 2, which would be fully boosted stat from the x6 of 3 Agility uses, putting it at 1986 speed and then that value is doubled by the tailwind to 3972. There will be very slight variances if it uses an attack such as Quick Attack or (through the use of Mimic or Mirror Move, Extremespeed) but those are more for game mechanics than anything, as we have seen in the anime the speeds of Quick Attack and Agility being used in combat are almost interchangeable in their practical interpretations.
    So, we have 3972 Pokemon speed stat = 680.58 m/s.
    So doing all the calculations in reverse, at base, we can see Pidgeot's original base 101 stat [331 speed] is equivalent to a measurable movement speed of 56.715 m/s, roughly 125 mph!
    However, this is pretty tame at base, considering the world's fastest known animal, which happens to be a bird of prey, the Peregrine Falcon, has a maximum flight speed while diving, of 240 mph, or roughly 107 m/s. Very close to DOUBLE what Pidgeot's base speed is!
    Pidgeot at its base speed, however, is pretty fairly comparable to several falcon and eagle species, so it's not all that unbelievable. Where it gets to be unbelievable, but now TOTALLY believable through math, is that it can reach max speeds of Mach 2! Since it can feasibly achieve a MULTIPLIER of x12 of its speed, then it is completely believable to see it reaching speeds of Mach 2. A real life Peregrine Falcon, if it had a x12 multiplier to its speed would actually be hitting speeds of Mach 4!!!
    I just want to know what other cool things could be discovered through stat calculations! I mean, keep in mind, freaking PIKACHU can ALMOST reach Mach 2, since it has a base speed stat of 90, meaning 301 speed at base, if it had all those boosts, it would come very close to hitting Mach 2, and that is pretty insane.

    I like the Pidgey line. The first stage may be plain, but the next two stages are very pretty. It is fun to speculate on what bird the line is based on. I never noticed the red tailed hawk thing. Neat. I would like to add that I found another bird to connect to the line, the kagu. The kagu is a flightless terrestrial bird. It is a cute gray creature. It lives in the island of New Caledonia. It is related to seabirds. The kagu has a long feathered crest on its head. The crest is gray like the rest of the body. The crest usually lies flat. However the kagu can raise it's crest up high to signal to other kagu. The crest is so long and it swooshes down. It reminds me of a Pidgeot albeit a lot less colorful. Maybe Mega Pidgeot is like a kagu with a display crest. Comparing the Pidgey line to certain songbirds and birds of prey. So I would like to add in kagu. I am not sure if this was intentional. I have heard of Dragonball Z but never seen it. It is amusing to bring a connection. The connection I noticed right away is Digimon. I watched that show a lot when I was little. Pokemon mega evolution is like Digimon in evolving to a higher stage temporarily in order to gain advantage on a fight. It is a pretty cool idea. It would be interesting if it was utilized more. It would be awesome if Ash occasionally got into really tough fights and used the power of temporary evolution. Pikachu was able to temporarily evolve to a Raichu, and beat up much stronger enemies. That would be cool.

Like, it's CLEARLY spelled as if it should be pronounced "pihd-jee-ott", but many old Pokemon encyclopedias from the 90s (the ones actually printed in book-format since Bulbadedia wasn't a thing yet) said it was pronounced "Pihd-jitt." And indeed, in the anime and some games I've heard it pronounced both ways. It's like the whole "GIF/JIF" debate. No matter which way you pronounce it, SOMEBODY is going to get up in your face about how THEIR way of pronouncing it is the "correct" way.
