Actually I found a direct contradiction to your view in the Bible, and I don’t think you can explain it away: Acts 8:14-17 says “Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost” (Acts 8:14 -17 KJV) Pastor Mike, or anyone else in the comment section, how do you explain this?
This may seem like a short answer because it depends on a larger understanding I have of the function of the apostles in the beginning of the new covenant. I think this passage has everything to do with apostolic authority and isn’t about a second experience with the Spirit other than indwelling. The people in Samaria have heard the message second hand but not from official apostles. The reason they haven’t been indwelt by the Spirit yet is to ensure that apostolic teaching is the authoritative teaching of the body of Christ. Much should be said about this but it’s the reason we end up with our New Testament instead of an endless debate over what we are supposed to hold to. So, my answer is that these Samaritans are experiencing the indwelling of the Spirit for the first time, which has been delayed so that the authority of apostolic teaching would ensure the true gospel is believed by them and later generations.
And yet, in Acts 10:44-48, it says, "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days." An event occurred between Acts 8:14-17, and Acts 10:44-48, that may have something to do with why there is a difference in the way the Holy Ghost was received. It is in Acts 10:9-43, that Peter receives a vision and goes to preach to Gentiles. As Peter explains in Acts 11:15, "And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning." (That is, at Pentecost in Acts 2:2-4). In Acts 8 the people converting are Jews/Hebrews/Israelites of Samaria, not Gentiles. And it is Philip who is doing the preaching in Acts 8:5-7. Then later Peter and John were sent to them. The people in Acts 10:44-45, are Gentiles. So, it would appear to me that Gentiles can be saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit at the same time, because it is God who has the authority to baptize in the Holy Ghost regardless of customs.
@@larrylafferty3836 nope. I think that apostolic authority (in the sense I see it used by Peter, Paul, John, etc.) was only exercised by them and was enshrined in the New Testament so that their authority to deliver doctrines “once and for all” to the saints was accomplished and solidified in Scripture.
@@MikeWinger in John 20, the disciples received the Holy Spirit after Jesus breathed on them. I just understood that today. Acts 2 is a filling and outpouring for power and witnessing as prophesied in Joel 2.
When I first got saved I was attending a Pentecostal church. I was baptized there. At some point I went to the altar to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. At some point a guy came up and grab me from behind in a bear hug and pick me up off the ground and started squeezing me insisting that I speak in tongues to prove that I had received the Holy Spirit. After a minute I started jabbering just so he would let me go. Long story short I go to a different church now.
That guy was in error. You don't force a person to receive any gift. If God did not force salvation on us, will it be speaking in tongues that He will force on us? No! Your experience is a textbook example of what should not happen
I don't believe every believer will speak in tongues, but I do believe the greatest sign of having the holy spirit is a changed life, growing in Christ.
True. Not everyone will speak in tounges. Surely everybody COULD. And a changed life is key. The fruit of the Spirit is evidence, not the gifts. However, they for sure help live a changed life.
@@LAURIE_atheart What does a changed life have to do with the gospel. First, lets look at the gospel. First Corinthians 15:1-4. That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. It is believing that gospel that Jesus died for our sins to pay our sin debt to God so we are saved from hell. We all deserve to go to hell. Romans 3:23. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:9-10. There is none righteous, no not one. So, God hates our sin, but He loves us sinners. John 3:16. For God so loved the world, First John 2:2, that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, that WHOSOEVER, anyone, believeth in Him, should not perish, but HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE. Romans 1:16. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to EVERYONE THAT BELIEVETH, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Galatians 1:6-9. Though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that we have preached unto you, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. As we said before, so say I again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received from us, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. IF we could be saved by what we do or do not do, then why did Jesus have to die such a horrible death? It is the only way we could be saved. He took the punishment for ours sin debt, so we could never be condemned again. John 3:18. The simplicity of the gospel. Acts 16:31. The Philippian Jailor, asked Paul, what must I do to be saved? Paul gave him the simple answer. BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AN THOUGH SHALT BE SAVED AND THY HOUSE. The simple answer is also given in John 6:47. Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, HATH EVERLASTING LIFE. First John 5:13. These things have I written unto you that BELIEVE on the name of the Son of God, THAT YE MAY KNOW YE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE. Ephesians 2:13-14. For by grace ye are saved, (what Jesus did for us) through faith, (we believe He did it to save us) and that not of yourselves, (we did nothing for it) IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD, NOT OF WORKS, (nothing we do can save us) lest any man should boast. You cannot boast in a free gift. First Corinthians 9:15. Thanks be to God for His UNSPEAKABLE GIFT, ETERNAL LIFE. Once you have it you cannot lose it because it is ETERNAL LIFE. John 10:28-29. No one can pluck us from His hand.
Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
I remember when I was born again and this was straight after I was baptized. When I came out of the water I felt a waterfall of love flowing through my body coming from above and it was the most unbelievable experience of my life. I tell people it was like a mothers love for a baby times a million. That's my way of explaining. You can't really explain it unless it happens to you. I remember walking outside and everything looked different and soo much clearer. I remember looking at the bark of a tree and the birds flying by and i was absolutely amazed at their beauty and started talking to GOD how did he create such things, and i had looked at the bark of a tree many times as a logger. I was a drug addict, smoker, drinker and gang affiliate before baptism and I had been doing these things for 20 years and I could never quit but it was like I had never smoked anything in my life. I had no desire to smoke or do drugs and that was impossible but now I know it had to have been the born again process I guess you would call it. Just about every Christian that saw me the next day said there was a unexplainable glow over me and it was mentioned by some that I was overflowing with the spirit. My wife, well girlfriend at the time was not a believer and she said she saw a light come through the ceiling when I came out of the water and it shone on me. I'm no super Christian by any means but since that day I have seen the LORD baptise people with the spirit before water baptism and after baptism and sometimes years later. When you think you have him figured out he throws a spanner in the works. His ways are higher than ours and we can never know how he works. The house of Cornelius were baptized as Peter spoke and others through laying on of hands. This is a difficult subject to preach on to be honest.
Wow...I had the same experience/feeling...it's hard to describe but you described it well...only my spiritual experience like this was when I had exactly 8mths sober&clean! And this was before I ever got baptized by water...I was at what they called an AA Back to Basics gathering that lasted a good part of the day...doing the 12 steps in one day like they did in the earliest days of AA.... It's a very long testimony of what happened to me and what I experienced with ALL "3"of them there...Father God,The Holy Spirit& Jesus Christ! I'd talk about it when I lead meetings.....I was "somewhere else" for one thing... felt the feeling your describing and I didn't want to come back,I didn't want the feeling to stop..wow...never have been able to actually really figure out what actually happened but it happened and was life changing....this was 17 years ago...April 9,2005... everything looked more beautiful..all the most wonderful feelings rolled into one that you'd ever want to feel...pure peace, love, beauty, joy, warmth, contentment☺️ 🙌☺️...and I was told things by them....the only thing I can compare it to now is when I'm in Jesus' presence..but it was more intense&lasted longer....one thing Father Yah told me was "All Will be Revealed"...well...it sure is! God bless You All Much 🕊️💞🕊️Shalom 🕊️
I'm subbing to you I might want to talk to you more about your experience...never in all these years have I found anyone else who's gone through this😳Also....afterward people told me how I had changed... blessings 🕊️💞🕊️🤺
@@SpeckledBird1 lol God bless you. You will be surprised to know that there are many who have had this experience. I'm happy to talk however the LORD leads us too. Many blessings to you and your family
Love your teaching Mike, I was one of those that received the baptism in the Holy Spirit with tounges a couple of months after salvation. Then months later after having prayed & fasted for 14 days had an encounter with God that gave me a unique gift of the spirit to serve the body of Christ. So from my experience there were multiple encounters or fillings of the spirit.
I understand if you've only prayed in tongues to God in a prayer language. But at the church you go to, does anyone have the gift of speaking earthly tongues (obviously that they didn't learn, but were miraculously given)? Are there people using this gift to evangelize unbelievers at your church?
I got baptized with the HS at a Calvary Chapel retreat when I was a new believer. I received the gift of tongues and a strong passion to do evangelism. I was never the same.
Baptized with, baptized in, and the Spirit poured out. Jesus does the baptizing with the Holy Spirit in regeneration and renewal. Baptized in the Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit working in you. The Spirit poured out was a sign to verify the Word, we now have the written word, and also fulfilled prophecy.
I know my own faith. I always wondered why I never spoke in tongues. But, the promptings of the Spirit are daily. Not having this miracle kept me out of charismatic churches where the pressure to prove my salvation by tongues was great.
I agree, most Charismatic churches seem to be permeated with a kind of social pressure to behave a certain way in order to appear to be a genuine Christian. I am, by nature, reserved and not very "touchy feely", so I end up resenting the way I'm treated in Charismatic churches.
Short testimony: My father is a baptist, my mother identifies as pentecostal. They both strongly believe, their marriage was initiated by God in the first place. My mothers father used to be a home church pastor, they had experienced a lot of signs and wonders at home (supernatural protection, provision and deliverence in their own home and stuff like that, I still love to hear those testimonies from my mother). My grandfather used to question the salvation of my father very harshly because my father didn't pray and speak in tounges. Later, my grandfather got caught in adultery, his marriage broke into pieces. He used to have a very quick temper and has not been repentant at all all those years unfortunately... My father got offended so heavily that he refused to go to a pentacostal church from that point on. God spoke to my mother to humble herself under the spiritual leadership of my father although it was obviously flawed due to the offense my father had towards my grandfather. In the baptist Church they went to from that time on, they told my mother to "repent" from her "false" practice of her beliefs so that they could accept her into fellowship. My mother refused for she had a deep revelation about the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Other leaders told her to leave that surrounding and look for a place where she could get proper spiritual teaching (to be honest, the baptist Church very successfully avoided every topic concerning the Holy Spirit). So, I didn't really get this whole thing until I was in my teens. When I started to wonder why my mother had such authority in prayer and in what she spoke... Usually, I wouldn't hear her pray in tounges at all in family prayer times. And after I got saved in that baptist Church, I started to hunger for more revelation about the power of God and his supernatural nature - I wanted the power in prayer that I witnessed my mother had. I started to notice that my father didn't pray and live in too much power of God, to be honest. But also, I recognized that it was the humility and the spiritual support of my mother that kept their marriage going. All of my six siblings later left that baptist Church and almost all of us ended up in a pentecostal Church. Finally, God moved the heart of my father to leave that religious Church as well to help my mother get in a spiritual healthy surrounding. Still, my father isn't too open about the gifts of the Spirit, they both visit an evangelical Church and they minister together through music. It is still the prayers of my mother (and her praying a loooot in tounges/in the Spirit) that keeps my family running. I myself got baptized in the Spirit half a year after getting born again and another three months when I started to pray in tounges. Honestly, Jesus saving me through an open vision (that was totally unusual in that baptist Church) and filling me *seperately* with the Holy Spirit and with power, those two experiences were the most powerful and impactful experiences in my life. And they keep my running. Praying in tounges and ministering to others through interpretation - these and other gifts of the Spirit make my walk with Jesus so exciting. Wouldn't trade that for anything. Jesus is Lord!
Amen! A lot of theologians have never seen miracles before them as well and there intellectual side since childhood gives them a very anti-social outlook on life therefore a reserved Baptist church fits like a glove to them because everyone in that denomination has that same outlook on society. Adding on the fact that they dont Evangelize due to predestination adds an extra cap of reserve to this issue. Pentecostals tend to have more extreme backgrounds/testimonies that you dont tend to hear in many Baptist Churches and those people hunger for God in a more radical way so they end up finding themselves in a more radical church. Its hard to get my point across but this is just my observation. I hope someone understood it. Either way all Christian Denominations make up the bride of Christ. From all those he will pick. Now the Catholic church Im not sure if they fall in this category but some say yes, I say no, but only God knows. God Bless everyone who read this in Jesus Name Amen!!!
Amen!!! This is is a very similar experience to myself as well!!!! Currently conversing about this with my dad, and he goes (I stopped going) to a baptist church. I literally told me there are over 60 separate verses of a separate event of the holy spirit, and he fails to acknowledge them. That is the work of the enemy trying to prevent good people from seeing the truth. That is spiritual blindness. Now I go to an Evangelical/Pentecostal church and we feel the moving of the Holy Spirit there, Amen!!! The evidence is undeniable!!!
Hallelujah!!! thats an amazing testimony! very encouraging and wonderful to hear about Gods work in your life! gifts and miracles are for these times!! 🔥♥️
To start with, I do believe in gifts of the Spirit, but a lot of pentecostal churches both train to receive said gifts and expect people to speak in tongues or have some other physically obvious supernatural gift. They are often just as dogmatic about speaking in tongues as the baptist church you talked about was when calling your mother's gift false. People formerly from pentecostal churches often describe how they trained in tongues in order not to feel like an outcast. This understanding of how pentecostal churches often practice and enforce superstitious traditions, emphasizing feelings over faith (and mixing the two up), is probably what most of that baptist church was thinking of when they saw your mother, not realizing her tongues came from the Holy Spirit and not from practicing gibberish. People do speak in tongues (among other gifts, like healing and such). However: Biblically, it's wrong to demand people speak in supernatural tongues and to train to be able to. It's not a "gift" if you work for it. Those practices (training to receive the specific gift) are dangerous to people's spiritual health and, I would argue, heretical. You can't train to receive speaking in tongues nor any other gift. With certain gifts you can train to strengthen them, but you can't train to initially get them. You can, however, get closer to God through continually putting your faith in him, reading the Bible, and being in fellowship with other believers. And the Holy Spirit, as a result, may grant you the gift of tongues or some other physically obvious gift if it's necessary. But the faith comes before the gift, and a lot of pentecostal churches don't get that. The way you described your mother, I feel that way about mine. From having a grandfather who was a pastor where she grew up in Mexico (who was persecuted for not following old colony Menonite traditions and going back to what the Bible taught instead), to a dedicated prayer life, and being a constant spiritual rock in our family. But she never had the gift of tongues. I firmly believe it's not the tongues that make your mother such an awesome person, but her faith in Jesus. To be clear, I live in a city with a pentecostal church that doesn't train people in tongues and such. To my understanding they have people who speak in tongues and such, and are partners with my own local Church (which is from a different denomination) in various ways. So I can't say that all pentecostal churches are bad. But there is a danger: people often get too caught up in their gifts and rely on their feelings and get drunk on them. You see, that pentecostal church I mentioned had a large split some 15-20 years back, because they "weren't pentecostal enough". The split-off group went on to lose their foundation and basically became a small mega church (1 or 2 thousand members, shallow teaching that doesn't convict, and some extremely bad teaching like the one message I sat in for where they taught that Canada was mentioned in Revelation because a "maple leaf" was mentioned in Revelation 22:2-spoiler, it doesn't say maple, and that definitely isn't Canada). Based on what you describe of your mother, I believe her gift to be genuine. Yours may also be. That, however, isn't the case with so many people that the criticism of the pentecostal churches is legitimate in many cases, and is something pentecostal churches must constantly be aware of and fight off to stay true.
I often cry when I pray. I feel like the Holy Spirt just feels me up. Sometimes I I get embarrassed when this happens. Some people truly understand and others get concerned thinking I am upset. Love the spirt and know how much God loves me. So happy to be a child of God.❤️🌻
Me too... I start to cry in prayer, when I'm witnessing and sharing the word with others... whenever i feel the Spirit of the Living God... just overwhelmed with His presence, love, peace and holiness. Glory!
Ephesians 1:13 "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit".
The gift of the Holy spirit must be received through an act of our own will. The Lord is a gentleman in that he wont force himself upon any man or any woman...
The following proves you are correct. The most important thing about the word "baptism" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26. The fulfillment is found below. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
@@markmacmac8957 I just read the comment to you from "spottervideo". He is completely WRONG on each point. You are also wrong in your thinking that the Spirit is received by some act of your own will. YOU WERE DEAD IN TRESPASSES AND IN SIN. No dead person can call out to God or anyone else. YOU"RE DEAD. No man comes to the Father unless the Spirit draws him. The bible is clear; IN ADAM ALL DIED. When Adam sinned, EVERYONE DIED. Therefore Everyone is going to hell at that point. God chooses whom he will save even BEFORE the foundation of the world. YOU HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. That's not Calvinism; that's bible Fact. I would walk very carefully if you think you are going to add the law to Grace. Yours is a work system that you think it is up to your own ability to get saved. Paul calls that "Another Jesus" and says those people will be damned. The word in Greek for "another' means another of a Different Kind; NOT the same kind. God calls the ones he is going to save as, CHOSEN, CALLED, ELECT, PREDESTINED. It's ALL God and none of you. God gets all the Glory. You get none. I can prove that Mr. SpotterVideo is wrong on all counts. Here's a simple proof. He says baptism has nothing to do with the new testament. GARBAGE. Paul in 1corinth which was two decades past Pentecost, said that he was glad that he had baptized none of them except a few people. Their loyalties were divided, but Paul clearly water baptized. Philip baptized the Ethiopian after he asked if he could get baptized and found WATER. So Marc mac Mac, do you really wish to follow someone who lies against scripture? STOP TAKING SCRIPTURE OUT OF CONTEXT AND MAKE IT SAY SOMETHING THAT IT DOES NOT SAY. God is NOT happy with him. Don't add yourself to the list of people who walk around in error everyday. You can NOT praise God for saving you if you think you had anything to do with it. He is a jealous God and does not share his glory with anyone. Read John 1:13. It is NOT by the will of MAN. It is NOT by the will of the flesh. It is NOT by your own thinking process. It's not by blood which means that even if one of your parents were saved, doesn't mean that you will be. So get a hold of me and get the truth. I've taught for over 30 years. Mr. "video" knows nothing of which he speaks.
@@SpotterVideo you have made a travesty of the bible. Every one of those verses are out of context and content. You don't even see the error in English in 1John 2:27. If the bible taught that we don't need teachers, then why are teachers mentioned many times in the new testament? Your application and understanding is foolish. Obviously you have no Greek understanding but your English is pretty poor too. Leading Mr. Mark mac Mac astray is on your head. In 1Corinth Paul baptized a few people, but not many because they were divided as to what they were baptized into. You call Phillip a liar when he was asked by the Ethiopian to take him to the water and baptize him. There's no such thing as "ghost" in the Greek or English translation. There is no such thing as THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. JESUS IS THE BAPTIZER; NOT THE SPIRIT. The Spirit is the method by which Jesus used to place all real believers into the body of Christ; the church. Since you have abused so many bible verses, you are not growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord. STUDY.
THANK YOU!! I've been asking this question for the past month due to an experience I had when I first got saved. Idk why I'm asking now, but I couldn't get past it and this makes the most sense that I've heard. God is good!! 😭☝️🙏🤗✝️
If you don't mind, what was your experience? I've recently been thinking about experiences I've had and would love to know more about yours if it's not too personal!
Read acts 19:1-7. Its very clear theyre believers but Paul prayed for them to receive the Spirit, and then afterwards they prayed in tongues and prophesied. That's not praying in other human languages because there were only 12 disciples theres plus Paul and they all spoke in known languages when co versing with each other (therefor they spoke the same languages). Praying in tongues is real, and baptism of the Spirit is real too
As a Pentecostal preacher's kid, I struggled with this all my life. Until at age 56 it happened for me, at home alone, worshiping at the piano. I finally received my prayer language and had an experience with God that night that I can't explain. I'm not going to make any hard and fast rules for others...but it happened for me, although I certainly took the scenic route.
wait... prayer language? "out of the mouth of two witnesses may every matter be established" (Deut 19:15, Matt 18:16, 2Cor 13:1) where are the two witnesses in Scripture that establish that believers "receive a personal prayer language"? Thanks
Prayer language? Experience with God? I doubt it. You probably just had a brief emotional high. The Bible says nothing about prayer languages (though it does give much instruction on prayer). We do not have visions and extrabiblical revelations today, but do have the inspired, preserved Word of God. Base your faith upon Christ and His Word, not some random emotionalistic experience that can be created/manipulated by the flesh and Satan.
Amen and thank you! Being in a Pentecostal church (though they claim non-denominational), it has caused me to study and be really sure what I believe, and it's encouraging to me to hear from you the same things I've found. I've spent hours and hours and hours over the last couple years really trying to wrap my head around the Holy Spirit when it comes to stuff like this. Gifts and baptisms and fillings, you name it... What has been the most helpful is what you touched on. Using these words the way the bible uses them... Because when people ask me now "Are you filled?" when really they mean "Are you baptized?" it makes conversations much easier when we use the Bibles definitions, and not our own. Luke is the one who uses the phrase "filled with the Holy Spirit" throughout his gospel and Acts, and Paul uses it once (Ephesians 5:18). Nowhere else is this phrase "Filled with the Holy Spirit" ever used. Luke even uses it once in Acts "They were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit". So there seems to be a temporary thing about it, yet "baptism" always sounds one and done. Baptism is never used to imply something temporary. "Filling" is also never alone. You briefly touched on that, too. It's also always linked with an action. With witnessing or prophesying or speaking in tongues/magnifying God. I really enjoyed reading everywhere "filled with the Holy Ghost" and "full of the Holy Ghost" appears in the Bible. It helps set the right definition. And same with baptism. Anyone who isn't sure they have the right definition of a phrase, I encourage you to look up everywhere that phrase occurs, in context, and it sets the record straight really fast.
@@crsalways yep! That's one of them. But we don't build an entire doctrine off of a single, isolated verse Again, read my whole comment, think about what I'm saying, and I encourage you to read everywhere that phrase "filled" and "Holy Ghost" appears If you have no interest in reading what I said, and handling it honestly... then quoting a verse with no other comment is extremely unhelpful, and shows you have no interest in discussion, or truth, only playing whack a mole with strangers on the internet... I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts, if you want to thoughtfully respond to me. Much love ❤️
I became a believer 10 years ago and about 5 years ago I started wondering about Holy Spirit. The two churches I attended in the first 5 years I was born again didn't really mention Holy Spirit but the Lord was really drawing me to seek out and learn more about Holy Spirit. I knew about the father and Jesus, but not about Holy Spirit. I prayed and asked God to help lead me to truth of Holy Spirit and to fully understand who He is. I just was so hungry for Him and I feel that God honored my desires by leading me to a teaching on the Holy Spirit by Paster Robert Morris of Gateway church called the God I never knew. I really enjoyed learning about Holy Spirit and as I learned it was all backed up biblically as I studied. I asked God for more of Him and that I wanted all of Him whatever that looks like or whatever you wanna call it. I knew I already had salvation and Holy Spirit living inside me but I wanted the full meal deal and I just knew that God had more for me. The Holy Spirit gave me more of himself and in time with faith and submission unto God I did recieve the baptism of the Holy Spirit or a filling up of more of him. It didn't have anything to do with emotions but just pure simple faith and trust in God giving me all he had for me. I want all of God and what He wants to supply me with and if thats more empowerment to walk out my Christian life with Him, then I am totally open to Him. It was in God's perfect timing that I became hungry to learn more of His Spirit. At that time I had a girlfriend who had recieved her prayer language but she really struggled with praying outloud with people. I felt the Holy Spirit urge me to ask her to pray for me to recieve more of Holy Spirit in my life and lay hands on me while we were at work. She was very nervous but faithfully did and I did recieve more of the Holy Spirit specifically I did pray in an unknown language but only a few words. I was so full of joy to feel the Holy Spirit overflowing out of me and as I yielded more of my life and faith to Him I have received other gifts through the last 5 years like words of wisdom, prophetic words, words of knowledge, discerning of Spirits, and I have grown in my prayer language with Holy Spirit. I have never given a public tongue or interpreted a tongue yet but I simply thank God for using me and let Him know that I'm His vessel and I'm open for all He has for me. At the end of the day I have a personal relationship with God through Jesus and I'm asking to be continually filled with His precious Spirit so that I can be and do all He is calling and equipping me to be and do!! The Holy Spirit is not spooky or forceful. He is a gentleman and he will never make you do anything you are uncomfortable with. You are always in control because you have a free will. Holy Spirit is full of power and might but never just takes over you. He will never make you look weird because he is not weird. All the times I've been blessed by Him using me by providing me with His gifts, it is always for someone else's benefit although I get totally blessed by having yielded myself to be used. Also Holy Spirit dispenses His gifts and we don't just demand. If He does not give you tongues then He will give you some other gift..but its for building up the church. Anyway just ask God to reveal Holy Spirit to you and lead and guide you into all truth. God has so much for His children so try not to be so legalistic about it.
@@johnsmit5999 👋 Hi John. Yes I have been used many times to share the gospel with people that God brings into my path. I'm a maturity nurse and God has used me witness to some of my patients and their family members. I have spoken to a young man who was a satan worshiper, Muslims, Hindu, atheist, agnostic, and people who practice new age. Prior to becoming a believer I was many years practicing new age/occultic stuff. Just yesterday I invited a woman over to hang out with me on my porch and I shared the gospel and many testimonials with her. My heart is to simply serve God to the best of my ability. I can't do anything or any of the witnessing with Holy Spirit helping me to do it. Sometimes these encounters involve His gifts, but the most important is the fruit of the spirit..and the greatest of everything is love.
@@theencouragingwordministry Thank you for sharing some of your experiences! That would be a great occupation in which to share God's goodness. Praise God for so many opportunities. May God continue to encourage you as you share the love of Jesus! It is certainly my desire to share with whoever God brings my direction. There are so many who don't know what Jesus can do for them, not alone the spiritual gifts they can receive.
@@johnsmit5999 thank you brother! John you are made for such a time as this and the Lord will use you greatly. Did you know? The Scriptures clearly predicted that the Holy Spirit was only for specific people. Do you have an idea to whom? It was NOT meant for everyone according to the Bible prophecy . People were set part through faith and believing and obeying the gospel of the Kingdom before the NT writings even existed. They were saved that way. No human blood sacrifice needed either. They believed what was written in the Hebrew Bible or commonly known as "the Old Testament" . I mean, when the Messiah was preaching the gospel to the crowds, He used the OT only. See Mark 1:15 and Luke 24:44-46
I'm sorry guys but when the Holy spirit came on me it was 4 years after salvation and I wasn't looking for it , it happened during a time of prayer I was praying alone and when it came it was like a volcano going off in my belly , there was a difference from that time ... I actually prophesied before I ever spoke in tongues
This is what you felt or think happened. I’m not saying you’re lying. I’m just saying that you’re just confused. As someone who has been confused about a lot of things I can honestly tell you I’m not judging you. God cannot lie and His word is the only thing we can trust, not our feelings or thoughts. God tells us simply and clearly that once we believe we need to repent, confess Jesus as Lord, and be baptized in order to be forgiven of our sins and receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It happens as soon as you come up out of the water. As for the experience you had I have had similar experiences when I was praying where I can physically feel the presence of the Holy Spirit inside of me and receive insights from Him reminding of scriptures and guiding me with life decisions that are in my mind. Just because I have this emotional wonderful feeling in times of prayer and not at the moment after baptism doesn’t mean that the Holy Spirit didn’t dwell inside of me right after baptism. We don’t emotionally “feel” the Holy Spirit all the time. He may choose to cause us to make us feel His presence strongly and emotionally at times for specific reasons or because we are attempting to draw near to God in prayer. We cannot deny what God says. If what we believe seems different we must study the scripture for answers to understand what God is telling us.
Incorrect…. In Acts 10, the gentiles received the Holy Spirit (God) into their bodies during the gospel message. They were baptized in water AFTER. This is logical, as the gentiles were now easily receiving God. Today, no difference. Simply believe the MESSAGE that the apostles gave and God will do the rest.
I was baptized in the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues. No one forced me to do it and I didn’t make it up. The Spirit of the Lord came over me and caused me to speak in another tongue. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is still for you today!
The scripture is clear that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a separate and distinct occurrence from being born again. It is so clear that anyone teaching to the contrary is simply quenching the Spirit.
Can you do a deeper dissection on this Pastor Mike? this is something I've been struggling to get grips with for months with no clear answer. I come from a Pentecostal background and I'm going through periods of confusion about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in my life. Hope you read this, Thanks for all the work you do for Christ. God bless
Im not sure if our situations are similar but i can at least kind of relate. One thing that helped me was searching and reading about what the Spirit does for others in both the OT and NT. Also, as someone already said, trust in our Father to lead you to understanding. Mike touched on it in this video, but theres a big difference between the singular baptism of the Holy Spirit which marks the initial dwelling and subsequent filling(s) of the Holy Spirit for empowerment, comfort, guidance, etc. A prayer I came across that I can recommend adapting into your own words is "Lord, if You want this for me, then I want it".
I’m in the same stage, I believe what happened to DL Moody to be true. John 20 says the disciples received the Holy Spirit after Jesus breathed on them which means Acts 2 wasn’t receiving the Holy Spirit, it was a filling or outpouring as prophesied in Joel 2. This is for power and witnessing which according to the book of Acts, does not have to be evident with speaking in tongues. What is evident is being bold for the Lord and being “drunk with the Spirit”, where your spiritual senses are awakened and you are overflowed with joy and peace and of the fruits of the Spirit, not shaking on the ground and speaking gibberish.
Thank you for this, Mike. I have agonized over this for a long time and have come to much the same understanding - it’s so encouraging to hear it from someone I so greatly respect.
@@peregrino9154 yeah, Charismatics have gotten a reputation for being loose on doctrine, and for good reason since there have been so many abuses surrounding the gifts. I've been blessed to find a couple of different churches now who've emphasized love for the Word (Jesus) and His word (Bible) first, before emphasizing the supernatural. I'll be teaching on this type thing in the future on my channel!
Thank you Pastor Mike for confirming what I understood to be. When we are told that we are born of water and of the spirit; after trying to understand for years what it means, this year It became clear (I beleive the Holy Spirit illuminated the understanding on this subject) and came to the conclusion that born of water refers to when we are naturally born and born of the spirit is when we are born again and the Holy Spirit comes to indwell in us to empower us to walk and live for God, transforming, sanctifying, guiding us in Spirit and in Truth. When Jesus ascended to be sitted at the right side of Heavenly Father; He than gave the Holy Spirit to His disciple to dwell within, to empower them to preach the gospel which is the power onto salvation. And so it is for everyone who is born again, we receive the Holy Spirit to empower us...whether we speak in tongues or not is irrelevant as we all have the Holy Spirit. Not everyone have the same gifts... So much emphasis is put on the supernatural gifts...when we are told that THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT IS LOVE. And when we have been given the two most important command by God: "But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:34-40 NKJV" AND "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:1-13 NKJV"

I believe when JESUS was talking to Nicodemus about being born of water and spirit refers to Ezekiel 36 verse 25-27 which Is a total work of GOD. Why do I believe this? Its because he said to Nicodemus you should not be surprised at this because he was a teacher of the law. So Nicodemus should have known what JESUS was talking about. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT to confirm this. I am convinced this is what JESUS was talking about.

Thank you for this examination of scripture in regards to baptism vs filling of the Holy Spirit. I am new in Faith (2 yrs) and seek daily the filling and leading of the Holy Spirit in complete surrender and obedience to the Will of the Father. I had heard a teaching on the doctrine of a second baptism early in my salvation. I also remember when I asked God to help me have a relationship with the Holy Spirit and to be filled and lead in surrender and obedience to be the second baptism I had heard taught. I was recently corrected around this subject with the person pointing to the baptism at the time of salvation as you pointed out. It tested my heart and I took it back to study scripture and theological teachings. Though there is the scripture in Acts 8, I have learned scripture will will support scripture and there is great support in scripture of the baptism at salvation as opposed to a separate event and the separate event it a filling of the spirit. Great Word! Thank you

As a new Christian attending a Pentecostal church a lot of emphasis was put on speaking in tongues and people where not treated as fellow believers until you demonstrated this gift, people became so desperate for this gift and felt inferior
As a former AG pastor , and now I would consider myself an apprehensive continuationist, because we live in an age where the canon of scripture is closed, and the fact that the tongues in Acts were known human languages that God enabled them to speak supernaturally, what we are hearing today is not the real tongues spoken of in Acts but silly gibberish. I believe God can still give the real gift but I think it is rare, and when it would require interpretation it would need to be out of the pages of scripture. God is not speaking today beyond what his written word already says. If he is giving fresh revelation it would only be Him speaking from the ancient words of scripture in our present day. Otherwise, we really would have to believe in an open canon. This would be heresy to the early church Father’s.
@@matthewterry9413 Amen brother. I have met a few of our kind along the way. I still can get along with AG folks, just can’t subscribe to all they believe in.
I grew up AG, and such a ridiculous emphasis was placed on "baptism of the Holy Spirit" that I felt condemned and inferior because I didn't get it, no matter how long I pleaded with God. The one time I went to church camp as a preteen, they brought kids up on stage during nightly chapel, layed them on the floor with pillows under their heads and prayed fervently for them to be "filled with the Spirit." I took my turn and didn't understand why I didn't receive this "gift" of writhing around on the floor enraptured and speaking gibberish like everyone else. There was no grace, no joy of salvation, no eternal security in Christ, only condemnation and endless talk of "backsliding." I grew up terrified of Jesus' return because I feared He would leave me behind. It is evil to preach this impossible "gospel" to children. When I finally read the Bible for myself after experiencing grace for the first time in my mid-30's, I realized that I had been lied to all of my life and that I had been baptized into the Spirit and into the Body of Christ the moment I believed. All of the gibberish and jumping around and writhing on the floor were simply emotional manipulation. It served no higher purpose. It was all fake. I am grateful that God granted my request for a desire to read His Word because knowing the truth actually set me free from the bondage of legalism. Thank you, Jesus!!!
I came to this conclusion through the back door. Meaning I believed when you repent and believe and become saved that’s when you get baptised by the Holy Spirit. This video came just in time to help me confirm this outcome through thorough searching in the text because I am currently in a conversation about the gift of tongues. Thank you Mike
In my experience it was absolutely an event. It wasn’t the “warm and fuzzies” either. I fell the raw power of God enter me, it immobilized me for 30 minutes. My whole body vibrated so intensely. It started in my hands then arms then legs, then right hand started shaking uncontrollably, then my leg. Then I dropped to me knees bc I was about to lose control. Then the whole body bI rarely so I relay I couldn’t even move my face muscles, lift my arm off the ground etc. felt like a thousand pounds. Mine happened on day 3 of my fast, which I was actually doing to try and rid myself of some witchcraft that Freemasons did to me, it’s like the Holy Spirit burned it all off. So so intense. It was just a feeling, it was way more powerful, a very tangible power that took over my body
@@ChristAlone_ I agree and disagree. We shouldn’t base our faith off experiences but to even compare it to Muslims is outrageous. The Holy Spirit will lead you to Jesus Christ unlike a “Muslim encounter”

I was baptized by the Holy Spirit this morning. I had been on water fast for two days, praised God with Psalms every morning and evening and joined the daily morning prayers with two pastors at my church. One of them has been on water fast for 26 days. They lay hands on my head and prayed for my baptism of the Holy Spirit. Then it just happened. Hallelujah!
Praise God!!! And question about the water fast: 26 day water fast? Like, 26 days straight with no water at all?? Or like, every day, for 26 days, they would cut water for a certain amount of hours?
Thank you for doing a video on this topic! Extremely timely. My husband and I are seeking clarity and discernment as we are trying to develop a more biblical understanding of spiritual gifts. Always appreciate your videos!
We've all met unsaved "culture christians" too so perhaps you need to clarify what saved means, I think you need to actually surrender your inner life and get a rejuvinated heart by the holy spirit. Just water baptism and business as usual I think is less than what God demands.. a changed heart and a relationship with Jesus is what you need.
I don't think it's a function which a man can do. That wouldn't be very accurate to scripture in the immediate sense. Lot's of Christians were awful and Paul repoved so many of them. I think this is a function of God nameley the Holy Spirit. When the Gospel is preached the Word is quick and alive and so people recieve the Living Word and Jesus's Words are Life and Truth. When one has been given this Word it then seizes upon the individual so that spiritually they know it is True and if they accept that, which at least at that time was by the laying on of hands, then they accept that Spirit and that is the baptism of the Holy Spirit which washes away the sins of the individual and writes the Law on their hearts. If someone doesn't know Jesus is God Almighty then they can accept something less that seems like what you are calling a culture Christian.
@@drummerboy737 …. “Writes the law on their hearts?!” All of humanity already has the mosaic law written on their hearts. It is the mosaic law which convicts a person that they are guilty. They respond with genuine faith and receive Christ or they attempt to pacify God by works of the flesh. Unless by that phrase you mean that “the Holy Spirit is implanted in our hearts and Christ’s new commandment of “love one another as I have love you.”
I agree. When I was feeling lost and I finally surrendered myself to God I felt a strong change in me what I can only describe as water flowing over me and out of my chest. The water of life rising and overflowing makes complete sense to me. Baptism by water is a mere shadow and imitation of the real thing. The real baptism by the Holy Spirit must be sought for. You have to give yourself up. It isn't merely a case of saying the right words or performing the right act. It is surrendering oneself. You will know it when you have received it.
I had done the altar call thing plenty of times during my journey with God. I prayed the prayer of repentance and I truly did believe in Jesus, his death, burial, and resurrection. I was raised Catholic and in 2016 a co-worker of mine asked me if I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues. I told her that I thought only special people got that.. I heard other people speak in tongues but didn't think it was for me. Long story short, September 2016, she invited me to her church, and they did an altar call and that day I went up again to the altar but this time, I was baptized in a baptismal pool right after, a worker at the church led us through the scriptures about receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Shortly after, we began to praise the Lord and as I was praising the Lord in English, the elder laid hands on me and I began to speak in tongues. An unknown language flowed from me and I cried and prayer in tongues for a while. That day I knew something happened to me that changed my life forever that was unlike any altar call I ever experienced. Yes, the gifts of the Spirit woke up in my life and I do move in the prophetic, but I always tell people the evidence was in my transformation. It was like Paul, a murderer of the Christians now preaching Jesus! (although I was not a murderer lol) Everything changed from that very moment. Yes I pray in tongues, but more than the tongues, there was a complete shift in my life. That is when I can say that I received the power to work out my soul salvation. The gifts, tongues, the transformation, the experiences with God, my relationship with God, all are byproducts of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I am a living witness to this. I do not think you need to speak in tongues to be saved but I will say once you experience it, you will know the difference. I love your teachings Mike, but I will say that some things cannot fully be understood unless you experience it for yourself. This is one of those things. I didn't receive the Holy Spirit and continue in a lifestyle contradictory to the Lord as some may argue I received “another spirit”. I wanted the Lord and righteousness. I discerned my need for him and was thrust into the scriptures for hours a day upon my conversion. I am a lover of the word of God and plan to attend seminary this fall! I pray that we learn not to despise others experiences as invalid simply because we have not experienced them ourselves. Rather, be open to what God wants to do. I want all he has for me and I am sure you do too! God bless you Mike! There is more ❤️
I was saved, a month or so later Babtised in water and a couple months after that Babtised in the Holy Spirit. I simply read the word and followed the instruction that the Lord reveiled to me on what to do. Like the blind man said "all I know is that I was blind and now I see" I was lost and now I am saved, Babtised in water and the Holy Spirit and I do speak in tongues! Praise the Lord! 🙌💓👑
Dearest Mike, thanks for answering so many questions I’ve had for years. 50 plus years ha, brought me so much peace in my heart ❤️. Sincerely grateful, Howard
As usual , Mike , you have a way of explaining things so simply that I can grasp them easily....I kind of thought this same way about the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Bible but just couldn't put it into words...thanks for sharing this lesson !!
I very much like that sober explanation, as opposed to going for the extremes like “someone must speak in tongues as proof of salvation,” or the opposite, “speaking in tongues is demonic.” They both are completely wrong and hurt the body of Christ. I accept this view as it seems to be actually biblical.
I dislike when I speak with Christians who subscribe to the view that you must speak in tongues to be 'truly' saved. I feel I am 'truly' saved, and yet have never spoken in tongues. The 'requirement of it to be truly saved' is a stumbling block, planted there by those who feel they are elite and can speak in tongues.
I have NEVER heard a Charismatic believer say that. Speaking in tongues is a sign of being baptized in the HS. It has absolutely nothing to do with being saved. You (and Mike) are the one conflating the two.
@@danstewart3319 I think you're confusing my statement about churches *REQUIRING* the evidence of speaking in tongues, and people who have the gift of speaking in tongues. I do believe people have the gift, as people do have many gifts. However, all Pentecostal churches preach that you need to speak in tongues in order to demonstrate that you are saved. I went to a Pentecostal church for most of my life. You have *NEVER* heard this, yet it is common for these churches to say this. In fact, the church I last attended, evidence that you spoke in tongues was a REQUIREMENT in order to be a member of the church.
@@Stryder_The_Nite_Owl oh my goodness, that was going too far! If one speaks in tongues, good for him, he is blessed! But to make it a requirement is going too far!
From my study this is extremely helpful. I do not despise any of the gifts as taught throughout scripture. I have had them weaponized against me. So when we read in context 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14; it sheds light on how we all don’t have that gift and it’s okay, if you teach contrary you’re not operating in love and not to be recognized because the Holy Spirit himself inspired these believers to give us the Word of God along with manifestations of the gifts. I do pray for grifts continually and desire all of God and his gifts for the building up of his church. If there are some that would join me in prayer for those grifts. I will add you to my prayers and would be glad to not just pray for the body but pray specifically for my brothers and sisters. God bless, everyone!!
Pentecostal here. I really appreciate the tactfulness your team has put into this topic. I completely understand the perspective of being hesitant to speak in tongues for fear of 'faking it' or delving into emotionalism. As someone who has spoken in tongues myself, I can guarantee that you will know for sure when it is the Holy Spirit speaking through you and not your imagination. It is an act that requires total surrender, and is one that has personally made my walk with God much more intimate, powerful and real. While speaking in tongues, you simultaneously feel the presence of God and connect with Him in a personal way. I believe this is why 1 Corinthians 14:4 says it is for personal edification. The one thing I have often questioned is if speaking in tongues is the only evidence that a believer has the Holy Spirit. Growing up Pentecostal, everyone drills in you that it is the only evidence that you have the Holy Ghost. My parents taught me this, and while I had experienced the gift of tongues for myself, I grew up with a lot of fear that I would go to hell if questioned this idea or came to a different conclusion. While I am still digging in scripture for myself to come to my own conclusions, one piece of scripture I think is vital for this discussion is Acts 10:44-48... 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. I think this passage at least infers that the way you can tell if someone *absolutely* has the Holy Ghost if they have the gift of tongues and / or prophecy. Also, the fact that this was poured out on the early church as the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2) leads me to conclude that it is something all believers should at least seek to have (1 Corinthians 14:5.) I don't believe that it died out with the apostles, but I believe it is a gift for today's church, and from my own experience, is a powerful tool that equips you with the boldness and power to fulfill God's will.
I grew up Pentecostal and they always seem to overlook 1 Cor 12 that plainly states not everyone speaks with tongues nor is that the intention of the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor 12 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
When you said you have spoken in tongues, do you mean you speak actual language? I'm honestly asking, not bashing. I believe that we can only "guarantee" things are genuine if the things that we proclaim genuine are in fact in Scripture. If not, it's up for debate and questions, not for mocking or anything like that but for filtering things that are absolutely true, against subjective truths that people usually claim to be true.
@@sontoshi25 no worries at all! There have been times when I have spoken a particular dialect that I knew was an earthly language. @@adamrichardson5224 what do you mean by evangelize to unbelievers? Are you referring to people speaking in tongues in a service where unbelievers are present, or speaking directly to sinners using tongues? I have also seen and experienced praying in tongues before going to evangelize. Once I had the opportunity to minister in a town square. I was walking along one day and there just so happened to be a local church that was street preaching. I had never met them before, but I found out we were the same denomination and I promptly asked if I could join them. We sang worship songs, prayed with people, called people to repentance. We also had someone who got baptized in Jesus’ name. And yes, while we prayed with some of the people, the Holy Ghost fell, and some of us spoke in tongues. it was a very powerful experienced. It Is the aroist participle that is used in acts 19 makes it very clear that apostle Paul was asking if they had the received the Holy Spirit AFTER believing. I have at least 20 Greek grammar books that all say the same thing. We should not use our preconceived notions to change what the scripture to a popular Evangelical notion. Even the Greek scholar AT Robertson says about this verse that it should be translated after believing, then he makes a very interesting statement… (paraphrase) but because it disagrees with our doctrine, we must not embrace it The context actually proves the point further. You will notice that these believers did not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit until after they were rebaptized and Paul laid his hands on them.

Basically I think he believes that Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the same as the first infilling. Is is when you actually are indwelt. And John 14:17 might explain "even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you." The H.S was with them (presens) but (Future) shall/will be in them (Pentecost). I.e the Baptism in the Holy spirit is essential, but tongues is not the only sign, if you heal somebody or other spiritual manifestations you still got it. It must be an inward filling with outward signs. I'm sorry but don't quote me 100% on all this, but I think this is some of it as I remember.
@@givethanks6714 Just when I thought that I had read every book on the subject written in the last 100 years, you share this author. Well, thank you. I will need to read what he has written to see if I'm an agreement or not. However, with that being said, If what you say he teaches is true, I would disagree at some level. I believe every gift of the spirit was available before the day of pentecost, therefore, speaking in tongues would be a new evidence quite removed from the Old Testament gift usage, and thereby, being a unique sign of receiving the actual gift of the Holy Spirit. I will say that one can be completely converted before they ever receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I will also say, that if one uses consistent hermanotics in both the epistles and the book of acts, there is no way that 1 can be convinced that 1 receives the gift of the Holy Spirit at conversion.
@@randalwdeese Oh. :) Thanks for sharing. Does that mean for you that Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is essential for you? I.e it is the same as not having the Spirit if you do not get? Romans 8:9.. "But whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ."
Just to share my experience. Please keep in mind that I am the least among you and I am very blessed and thankful for salvation. The short version is that when I was saved, it started with absolute repentance as I was shown the wretched man I was. A few days later I was going through something where I was feeling ill as if I was in a battle, and a hand was placed on my right shoulder from behind. I could not move, but I was overflowing, feeling like my chest was gonna burst open (for months) and I felt a tiny glimpse of what the true reward is to be in the presence of the Lord, what true Heaven is, it is being with Lord Jesus Christ. That was the blessing of the Holy Spirit for me. I was not in a physical church at any of those times, but at home. It was visible days later as a light artifact in photo, like a white flame handprint/fingerprint. This is my experience, but I know that it can vary from person to person. My shoulder has never felt normal, it has been in pain ever since, but I love its reminder every day as I try to walk in this crazy world. It has been several years ago. My experience seems to match a biblical experience, but I am also sure the Lord will manifest the Holy Spirit however he chooses. EDIT: I never spoke in tongues or anything like that, just a quick note.
I had never been to a Pentecostal church or heard anyone speak in tongues when I received my prayer language alone by myself after reading a little booklet about it. Went to the bookstore where I got the pamphlet and asked if they knew anyone who did that. The lady laughed and told me some churches. My life changed that day 50 years ago. Jesus is Lord!
@@KDTif God does not work the same way for all individuals. I was baptized by the Holy Spirit and I believed. By the grace of God I received faith, which is a gift. @@evangelistkimpatrik sounds like your in the same camp as the believers that have a conversion experience when the gospel is preached and God gives us faith brings us to repentance but then equates that with the filling of the H.S. and recieving of the gifts . That is the experience of some but seems to be the exception according to the Apostles doctrine. The pattern and evidence ( initial) for receiving the baptism of the H.S. is still the same for the church today.
@@KDTif And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession-to the praise of his glory. Ephesian 1:13-14 It sounds to me like you got saved when you heard the message of truth and as a guarantee, you were sealed by the holy spirit. So when you hear and believe the gospel of salvation you got saved and sealed by the holy spirt all together in one event.
I hope this blesses some... 🙏 I was 5 years of chronic illness! I was Semi Housebound, lost my health, job, finances and my fiance left me. I couldn't even look at electronic screen for 5 minutes, or hold a 10-minute conversation. But God did an amazing work. I now have a Christian Channel where I encourage people and show them what God did in my life and that there is hope for you also. ✝️🔥😊 *Keep believing even when it's hard* 🙏❤️🔥 *All things are possible with God*
I accepted Jesus as a teenager, got baptized in the waters and looked to get baptized in the Holy Spirit. It didn't happen until 6 months later for me. It was most certainly a second event, and it's what truly empowered me to operate in the fullness of my faith and calling in the Lord. This baptism has been very clearly treated as a separate event as far as everything I've read in the Word about it in my 20+ years in the Faith. I witnessed a family member getting baptized in the Holy Spirit completely alone at home during a personal time of prayer with the Lord, and spoke in tongues, also months after being baptized in the waters, and while going to a church that didn't even believe in the supernatural gifts of the Spirit. The baptism in the Holy Spirit isn't an overflow of the spirit, however. It's God's Spirit dwelling within you and empowering you in supernatural ways on how to live successfully for Christ. I don't know why the American church has such a hard time understanding this. The lack of a focus in ministering the baptism in the Holy Spirit is why Western church members have such a hard time struggling with sins their entire life while our churches in the East thrive even before death and in lack, since we pray for the baptism of the Holy Spirit right away after anyone's salvation. Accepting Jesus is NOT the indwelling of the Spirit. It's simply your profession of faith and commitment. The baptism in the water is the confirmation of that faith and loosening of your ties with the kingdom of darkness. However, you will struggle much more as a believer if you do not receive the Holy Spirit. This is why you see people getting baptized in the waters manifest demons right when they're about the be dunked in the water even though their response to Christ was genuine.
I beg to differ on one slight issue. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit IS an overfolow of the Spirit. You are a vessel that God's Spirit pours into you, and you do receive overwhelmingly overflow of rivers of living water.

For Hérōdés had killed him, though he was a good man and had exhorted the Judeans to lead virtuous lives, and to practice both righteousness toward one another and piety toward God; and while doing these things, to join in immersion. For this was a necessary preliminary if immersion was to be acceptable to God: they must not employ it to gain pardon for whatever sins they had committed; instead, they must do this as a purification of the body implying that the soul was already thoroughly cleansed by righteousness. LETTER OF ARISTEAS TO PHILOCRATES (~280BC) Following the custom of all the Judeans, they washed their hands in the sea in the course of their prayers to God, and then devoted themselves to the reading and explication of each passage. And I asked this question, “What is their purpose in washing their hands before praying?” And they explained that it is evidence that they have done no evil, for all activity is done by means of the hands. Thus they nobly and piously refer everything to righteousness and truth. So glad you hit this topic Mike. I've been looking for clarity on this specific issue for a while now and very greatful to have your input from a Biblical point of view!
Kind of sad anytime you see someone try to explain away the baptism of the spirit or the gifts they start with “I was raised Pentecostal” and they don’t believe anymore because of a bad experience. Don’t let a bad experience or church shape your view on the Holy Spirit. His power is alive and real today
I still believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I didn’t have a bad experience that soured me. I just think the Bible teaches something different about the phrase “baptism of the Spirit” than I was originally taught.
I totally agree with you!! I know people get into this extreme of charismatic churches, but there needs to be a balance. We don't just be "lead by the Spirit" if it contradicts the Bible. Paul in 1 Corinthians talks about this. He talks about the order of the church.
This is a great discussion!!! As for me, I knew and loved the Savior for some 33 years, and loved the Holy Spirit due to how I knew he was in and with people through all sorts of issues. Then, about 23 years ago, I had an encounter where I grew past “head knowledge” of all this to “heart knowledge”, where I knew the fullness of God was the only reason to live further. That is the moment Jesus became not just Savior but LORD and I received an overflow of a filling of the Spirit where my heart was changed and my life followed. Before all this I was “non-charismatic”; a few months AFTER this God miraculously guided me to regularly attend a charismatic church (a Foursquare mega church, to be exact), but I didn’t follow their teaching that I needed to speak in tongues. That church taught “the baptism of the Holy Spirit”, but it always struck me that I knew I already had a filling of the Spirit where “tongues” wasn’t present at all. YEARS later I did “open” the Gift of speaking/praying in tongues, and so I believe it has its place. But by no means do I feel it’s mandatory nor an “evidence” of the Filling; on the contrary-I have seen too many Spirit-filled, Spirit-led Believers bearing massive Fruit, and tongues has had little to nothing to do with that…born out in my own life as I have partially described. So I am left with the conclusion, although I am not dogmatic and will continue to learn, that the Baptism Of The Spirit is what happens when we’re Saved, and it may or may not include a Filling that can be witnessed by others to include some remarkable things, such as Tongues or “mere” life change. Subsequently, based on God’s Work in a Believer, and in the Believer’s obedience and/or submission to that Work, a Filling Of The Spirit can occur, sometimes also resulting in Tongues but ALWAYS resulting in obvious mind/heart/life change, which can also grow to the point where the Believer eventually “opens” the Gift of Tongues, as I have. Meanwhile, I’ve also seen MANY Believers who speak/pray in Tongues and attend charismatic churches NOT bearing much obvious Fruit!!! So I think too often it’s a merely “taught not caught doctrine”, and so it can be a counterfeit or distraction from a True Filling that results in mind/heart/life change, which is the true evidence of a close and growing Relationship with God…and is that which we ALL should be striving for above all!!!
Mike!!!!!!!!! I have been disheartened because no one saw what I saw about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I have a video on the Holy Spirit where I paint this picture of this and subsequent power as we die more to self. Thank you again I was beginning to think I was alone!!! In Christ be blessed Thank you brother,
What about Acts 8:14-17. It says the believers there had "simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" but it wasn't until Peter and John laid their hands on them that they received the Holy Spirit.
Apostolic pentecostals wrote the N.T. so the laying on of hands( direct contact along with petitioning God for impartation) was standard procedure... ummmh might be a pattern there??
When I was Baptized with water, I definitely was changed! But a couple years later, I received the Holy Spirit by the Laying in of Hands! Wow! What a difference! I received the Gifts of Healing,
Lana, I'm a noncharismatic believer in the Lord Jesus who's struggled with chronic illness for much of my adult life…I don't suppose you're able to exercise your healing gift 'long distance'-? I'd welcome God's help if you could. Either way-May God and His Word bless and keep you.
@@ChipsAplentyBand I understand where you are coming from! Yes, I will pray for you my friend. Chronic illness is no fun and games. But Jesus is with us every hour of every day, He knows what you are going through. It is up to us to stand firm in Christ, read our Bible, and not falter in our faith whether He heals us or not! If we stand close to Him without faltering, He will stand close to us at Judgement Day! That is what this life's journey is all about! Will we stand no matter what? That is the faith by which we will be judged! Like Paul said in the Bible that He counted his sufferings for Christ to be all joy! Why? Because it brought him closer to Jesus! God bless you my friend! I love you! Lana
Lana........you have the gift of healing? How many people have you instantly healed ( healing by Jesus and the Apostles was immediate and complete) and how many of these people were blind, lame, etc.? Also, do you have medical documentation of any your healings?
@@carmensiekierke3579 No, I just prayed for their healings and the next day they would have been healed! I am not talking about a cold , but a sprained ankle, pain from surgery, etc.If you want written evidence, take it up with God!
I heard somewhere recently that if God gives you a hunger for a gift, then He wants to give it to you. I tend to agree. I got saved early last year water baptized that May and got Baptized in the Spirit a month later. I was perplexed after water baptism if I had the Holy Spirit in me since I felt no change in me. I started praying earnestly and relentlessly for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, asking Jesus to show me He’s real. I showed up to church on Pentecost Sunday feeling in my limited baby Christian understanding that something special would happen that day. Sure enough, as we did holy communion and started praying for the power of God to come into our lives, I felt something stirring within me and something literally pushing me toward the altar. That’s where it all happened..electricity all throughout my body, legs shaking uncontrollably, the Spirit speaking through me and a feeling of great love I can’t describe. I described is as feeling like a princess in the presence of my prince. I couldn’t sleep for a couple of days after that because I was in such awe. I told people it was the best day of my life. Since then, I’ve had multiple powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit. I feel Him very strongly during worship, deep prayer and fasting. Our God is so glorious!
If you had to take a stab at it. Where do you think this teaching is found in scripture, explicitly if possible, or if you’d like to even try general I’m open to that too. Secondly do you think this is a work of God or someone’s desire to pursue earnestly ? I myself am don’t believe the baptism of the Holy Spirit different from the regeneration of the Heart which is what happens when someone gets saved. I got regenerated at 23 year old even after I’ve been to church all my life until that point. So when someone says “baptism of the Holy Spirit” I say I am baptized into one spirit but I don’t speak in tongues. People have tried to baptize me in the Holy Spirit and nothing happened. I did take offense to it a bit because it almost made me feel like they questioned wether I was even saved. I know I’m saved, God saved me from the gates of Hell by giving me a new heart like Ezekiel 11 says. So when I hear people talk of this “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” different from my regeneration, I puzzle as to how one like me can get it? I don’t see it taught explicitly in the scriptures. Only thing I see clearly is that it comes after the laying of the apostles hands.
Mike I have followed you for years, so I thank you for always being trustworthy to be my first go-to. My wife and I are having a great discussion on the order of operations for salvation. Do you believe, get baptized by the Holy Spirit, sealed and saved, water baptized as first act. Or believe, saved baptism water and or spirit. Or is it to believe, be water baptised, saved, baptized by the Holy Spirit, sealed. Looking for the salvation demarcation. Blessed I get to have the debates with my wife. The best part, our kids watched us. No arguing, just kept saying God is worth the discussion.
I was just baptized in the name in of Jesus! I didn't speak in tongues and I don't know if I ever will but I love the Penticostal church I attended! Spirit filled church for sure!
I love the providence of the Lord. I am just beginning to dive into early American Pentecostalism with folks like Charles Parham, who insisted that “tongues” was a sign or proof of Baptism by the Spirit. So it’s cool to see this video come out today discussing this very topic. It’s a shame that so many people seem more interested in the signs of God, rather than the substance of God. Jesus said it best when addressing the Pharisees and Scribes in Matthew12:39 (LSB): “An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;”
Three times in scripture we see examples of believers recieving the Holy Spirit and what happened immediately upon them recieving the Spirit ( Acts ch.2,10, and ch.19). In each instance the first thing that happened was that they spoke in tongues. Recieving the Holy Spirit is so crucial to our salvation that God doesn't leave it up to a person or even ourself to say when we have recieves but gives a supernatural, biblically backed sign when we do and that is speaking in tongues. I was aware of the Holy Soirits' presence around me and wad filled with the Spirit before I ever recieved " tha anointing that abideth( 1John 2:27). I could easily have been convinced that I had already recieved when I hadn't
Good teaching Mike. I remember my conversion experience, was an overwhelming experience of God's presence, my wife who was saved before me had the same experience. This must have been being baptized by the Holy Spirit .
I’d like to say first, I love your channel. How do you differ the indwelling of the Spirit that happens upon salvation compared to the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus? I love that you don’t want to fake anything, neither do I. When I got saved and did the whole answer the alter call thing, I was led through a prayer but I know looking back it was when I believe that I was saved, and that at that point the confession in front of a preacher is just a formality because I was saved when I believe the message of Christ and with my mouth I confessed him as lord even though no one heard me say it yet. When I was asked by the preacher for my name I spoke in tongues as in an unknown language not another known language. I didn’t know what I was doing but all I could do is hold my stomach and what felt like a dam broke inside of me and I didn’t want it stop. From here I went on to experience some pretty amazing things that have shaped my walk and have kept me hungry for God and his word. I then fell into a trans and was taught the book of Ephesians chapter 6 by an angel and I “woke up” 1.5hrs later asking who the tall blonde guy was and why was he wearing Roman armor. No one knew what I was talking about. I woke up that night at 2am and wrote a song called the armor of God. The next day the preacher asked me if I wanted to pray over the offering and as I did I spoke my first prophecy. I didn’t know any of the formalities, in fact I was so ignorant, I thought the preachers wife was saying the annoying of the lord is here, I didn’t know it was the anointing lol I have had other experiences where i would spend a long period of time praying in tongues and then lead a Bible study and in the middle of it, I’d start quoting Bible verses I had never read from many different books of the Bible. No one else knew I didn’t know what I was quoting until I told them. Then we would look it up and see it was word for word Corinthians, revelations, Samuel etc. Eventually these occurrences were so common and I was so ignorant/untaught that I was labeled a demon possessed person and asked to stop. I would go on for 4 years learning in secret until I entered a respect Bible college and was mentored by an elder. I grew very resentful of the people that I loved that led me out of darkness and led me into light only to throw me away when they didn’t experience what God was doing through me, which I never asked for by the way. I hated the attention of it, I just wanted God and all of Him. I learned to forgive and actually called that church and asked to be forgiven for any disturbances that I caused to the church. They also asked me to forgive them and we reconciled and are good friends and I still call those pastors for advice now. What they said to me was, Eddie we are sorry we didn’t have the knowledge we do now to instruct and shape you into the man you are today. We pray for the instruction from Heaven to led people who God chooses to use in those capacities. God is Good!! Reconciliation is always better than division!
Thanks for sharing and I have had many amazing experiences with Holy Spirit throughout the last 5 years. He is such a gentleman and it is our privilege to work with Him. God bless
I got baptized in the Holy Spirit in a home service and I will never forget that experience. The word of God says that the evidence of speaking in tongues will equip you for ministry. There are gifts of the Spirit. Praying in tongues is a beautiful gift and you can bring down strongholds and fight in the Spirit with the Spiritual world. These are gifts of the Spirit. Every Christian should ask for the baptism of the Spirit this is for those that want it.
One Spirit? Agree! Multiple infilling to overflow? I absolutely believe. We could bounce back and forth all over the place. I have had the dynamite power come over me many times and I knew GOD’s Spirit was empowering me for the work He was calling me to do. Tongues isn’t the issue but so many make it THe issue. In the end we all love Jesus. We all believe HE is LORD. ❤🙏👊
@DiscipleDave DotCom the thing that I wonder about this is the people that don't get the chance for either baptism.....as in the case of the thief hanging next to Jesus that was promised paradise that very day by our Lord.
Yeshua hadn’t been glorified yet...John 7:39 Everyone in scripture since Pentecost was baptized in 💦 water including Paul who said to imitate him as he imitates Christ.. Fast/pray & ASK the Holy Spirit... 🙏💕
Like Mike says, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is what happened to the apostles in Pentecost, what happens at salvation. The Spirit can manifest himself in different ways once it resides in us. God, who is the Spirit knows what is needed and He will manifest according to what He sees appropriate. Now, that union with the Spirit must produce the Fruit of LOVE which is the result of that relationship. Being baptize by the Spirit is also the same as being born again, the Holy Spirit joins to our spirit to become ONE spirit with Him, therefore becoming children of God.
It's funny how protestants now would call those apostles heretics. They all were Orthodox. They had oral and written traditions. Paul confirms this in Thessalonians
@Truth Speak Yes we do claim to be indwelt by Gods spirit the Holy Spirit because we believe on the promised Messiah that was foretold throughout the Scriptures Jesus Christ God in the flesh
Actually Paul’s letters were addressed to saints, who were already born again. He is yet encouraging the saints to understand that if we sin AFTER being born again, that Christ Blood washes us of that stain. And SAVES us from His Wrath that comes upon GOD’s children who are disobedient. BUT The Scripture that tells us HOW to get into the Kingdom and How to be Born again is John 3:5 and Acts 2:38. Jesus said in John 3:5 That we must be Born again of water and of The Spirit in order to get into The Kingdom. Acts 2:38 Peter explains HOW to be Born again, and that is to repent and be baptized in Jesus Christ Name for the remission of your sins and then you will be filled with The Holy Ghost. Then you will be RAPTURE READY! Then Jesus also says in Mark 16 That these signs will follow them that believe and is baptized, it says they will speak in New Tongues . The New Tongues are The SIGN or EVIDENCE that The Holy Ghost has entered you and now you are BORN again! Just like in the natural when a baby is born there is the water it is brought forth out of and when it is born it already has a soul, and when it takes its first breath, and that is his spirits entering into him/her. And whatever country that child is born in, it will be evident by the language it will automatically began to speak. The same in the Spiritual, we must be brought forth out of the water ( baptized) and then GOD fills us with His Spirit. And now we are BORN AGAIN into The Kingdom of GOD, so now we WILL speak the native tongue of heaven because this is The Country we are Born into The Kingdom of Heaven is the place of our rebirth. GLORAAAY Be To Our GOD!
When you are baptized by The Holy Spirit, you will know it. The feeling is indescribable, but you definitely will know what’s happening. When It happened to me, all I could remember saying was that I felt bad for anyone that has gone their whole life without this experience. That’s how AWEsome it was.
It's sad so many people are dismissive of the Holy Spirit. Of course, they will say feelings are bad etc but it's more than that . And, It's more than head knowledge dissertation of spiritual matters that these TH-camrs always do.
Of course, it makes the most sense to you, because it sounds the most "logic answer." We HAVE TO accept the truth as it is. The question is: Do I change the truth or does the truth change me? In John Jesus calls Himself the truth.
I wonder: Doesn't Paul's question show that he knows a faith without baptism in the Spirit? Why else would he ask the question exactly like that? While it will probably be true that these disciples were indeed only John disciples, Paul's question seems to suggest that he was distinguishing between "non-Spirit-baptized believers" and "Spirit-baptized believers." Would be glad to have an answer. Regarding the terminology, I agree with you. It is interesting to see how cautiously Luke uses the term "baptism in the Spirit" in Acts. Rather, he uses "filling with the Holy Spirit." Nevertheless, should we not distinguish how Paul and Luke fill the terms "baptism in the Spirit" differently? In Acts 1:5 Jesus speaks that his disciples should be baptized with the Spirit. It is wrong, in my opinion, to take a Pauline understanding of Spirit baptism and insert it into the Lucan work, when the latter emphasizes primarily the power of the Holy Spirit for witnessing in Luke & Acts. If we only had Luke and Acts, we probably wouldn't even really realize that the Holy Spirit has anything to do with our salvation. From a Pentecostal perspective, we therefore know of a missiological dimension of the Spirit (Luke & Acts --> baptism of the Spirit as power for witnessing, separate event from regeneration) and a soterilogical dimension (especially Paul), which shows us how the baptism of the Spirit makes us children of God and part of the church. These are also not opposed to each other, but complement each other. Acts 19 in particular seems to show how Paul also knew this distinction.
When Jesus breathed on them and said "Receive the Holy Spirit"...I lean towards this was the moment that they were "sealed" (Ephesians 1:13). The overflowing would later occur at Pentecost. Why did Jesus breathe on them? It certainly seems like two separate events.
Or that when Jesus did that, he just made them ready or something for pentecost and the true reception. There is no proof they got anything in John. And what about Thomas? He was not there when Jesus did it. Ep 1:13 actually fits more with Pentecost. Why? "The promise" In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the "promised Holy Spirit"". jesus said; Act 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise" of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; Act 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” You see, the Spirit is the promise, and that was the pentecost experience. Also Galatians testify with: Gal 3:14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive "the promised Spirit" through faith.
But basically in this view the apostles were not saved until the day of pentecost, i have several issues with this view, but i alsi have issues with the mainstream view too
.... Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness...
As a young child I wasn't concerned with the word salvation. However, I was filled with presence of the Holy Spirit feeling peace and happiness; grateful and assured that Jesus loved me and was always with me. Do adults try to tarnish a child's experience with Jesus Christ by saying you're too young to understand. Thank God, Jesus said to His deciples, "Don't stop the children from coming to me!"
Psalms 133:1-3 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore. I remember being anointed with the Holy Spirit while worshipping and it felt just like having oil dumped on my head and flowing down my whole body and how it felt warm and fragrant but in the spirit. What was physical in the Old Testament is now spiritual in the new. The baptism of the Holy Spirit can be a happening after salvation. Be ye filled with the holy spirit!
Agreed. I truly believe that if more people prayed to God for wisdom and understanding before they read the word a lot more people would understand the word
@Mike Winger - I found your explanation to be very helpful, and actually revealed an area that I think is very important; that area has to do with the "Filling of the Spirit" tied to doing work for the Lord, similar with the idea of overflowing into demonstrable "gifts" and praise; like praise, prophesy, joy, tongues, etc. Underlining the "WORK"; that willingness to go out in a way that walks with the Lord to do the work of evangelism, teaching, preaching, service, discipleship, comfort, etc... WORKING FOR AND WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT. I grew up with knowledge of the Vineyard Movement from my parents history, but I myself grew up in churches that did not practice or teach in that vein, rather growing up in very evangelical bible churches that did not highlight "spiritual gifts" or the "baptism". However, I later came into an understanding of asking the Lord for "MORE", like you explained. And I received the more that I asked for in a very demonstrable move of the Spirit in my life, that resulted in a changed experience with the Lord and greater faith towards his faithfulness. Since then I have described such a thing as "there is always more to the Lord that he is willing to give for those who would ASK AND BELIEVE", trusting the promise of scripture and the goodness of the Lord to give the Holy Spirit to his children who asked. I think a necessary component that is often ignored is not MEERLY the will of God, but also the willingness and obedience of His children to seek the Lord in the "doing the stuff" as Wimber liked to say, I believe this is FAITH as described by Hebrews 11. I think this area has exploded with revelation for me because of your words here, in that filling being tied to doing the work of God by walking in the filling of the Spirit, constantly. I have a deep passion to bring the church together in this area, having seen both sides of the river, recognizing God's work in many strains of his church, but recognizing our utter dependance on the Lord to build his church and to walk in obedience, "doing the stuff" trusting His empowerment. There is a ton of scripture to go with all these points, and glad to enumerate some of that for any who are curious.
Interesting perspective Mike , tongues are real , tongues & interpretation are real . you must truly believe to experience these gifts & pray , pray , & pray . ask, seek, knock .. God is good ..
1 Corinthians 14:27 & 28 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet and speak to himself and God.
Kathy Gum This is the gift of "divers tongues." This is a reference to when someone gives a message to the church (out loud). See all of chapter 14. Speaking in tongues is also a prayer language for believers.
@@approvedofGod correct but in the same chapter verse 15 we need to pray for the understanding also. It isn’t just a confusing prayer through the spirit that we have no idea what’s being prayed for.
@@BeginnersN2WinnersThruJesus Yes, you can pray for the understanding. Now, as to your statement, "just a confusing prayer through the spirit that we have no idea what's being prayed for," shows that you do not understand the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Praying in the Spirit "edifies" the believer.
@@approvedofGod clearly it states in 15 that his understanding would be unfruitful, correct? So therefore you don’t understand because you are praying in the spirit and you should then also pray for understanding which is exactly what I just said. Don’t take the words out of context and try to explain to me something that simply isn’t true to fit your argument. In Acts they didn’t know what the Holy Spirit even was, they knew of John baptizing them and hardly knew the Gospel. That’s when Paul explained to them so yes, I do have the understanding but you can’t say one thing just to justify that I don’t know something when I never said anything to point towards not knowing it. The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost then they came up speaking in tongues in all known languages to everyone. Then later in Corinthians after Acts, Paul teaches them not to do this in church unless there is an interpreter, if there isn’t you’re to keep quite and speak to yourself. When you are praying in the spirit it speaks of mystery and you are to pray for understanding as well. 1 Corinthians 14:2 - 1 Corinthians 14:14-15 , 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 1 Corinthians 14:38-40, We have it all here from Paul and they shall all be done decently and in order. The confusion a lot of people get with this “water baptism of the Holy Spirit” isn’t separated from the baptism of the Father Son and Holy Ghost .The spirit dwells within us after we are saved and to showcase the we get baptized. What happened in Acts which is why people say we need to further be baptized by the Holy Ghost-Spirit is because THEY weren’t. In Acts they hadn’t known this, they only knew of Jesus and partially been taught the Gospel. We see this in Acts 1:1-8 specifically but through the chapter and into chapter 2. Then comes the day of Pentecost which is why the Pentecostal churches still believe we speak in tongues etc.. Which they don’t do it according to how Paul wrote for them to do it. Also in 1 Corinthians 13:8 it talks about many things failing and tongues shall cease. We have the scriptures and we should pray for understanding no matter what. God isn’t the author of confusion nor the spirit of lacking self control 1 Corinthians 14:33 and Galatians 5:23 “23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Temperance meaning self control.
Pastor Mike I believe that exactly and I believe mainly Baptism is a sign and display of your faith to other believers? God bless you and your church family ✝️ and that's why it's done publicly to declare that your a believer and influence others. ?
The baptism of the Holy Ghost has nothing to do with our salvation, but with empowerment to serve (casting out demons, healing etc.) I see it biblical + this is my experience also! For example in Acts 18:13-19 we see people, who were saved bcs Philip preached them the gospel, but they haven't recived the power of the HG. It happened once Peter and John prayed and layed hands on them. The HG fell on them and they recieved the gifts of the HG. I recommend teachings of D*rek Pr*nce or R*bert Morr*s here on YT. I was a very firm cessationist/baptist, but God humbled me. One morning (I was 4yo believer) the Holy Ghost fell on me filled me up (hard to describe, was very powerful) and I started to pray in tongues and since then my serving of the Lord started to be more powerfull. D*rek Pr*nce explain it similarly from the Bible that the baptism of the HG empowers you to serve God more powerfully and in fullness. Blessings!
I too was taught like you were but now believe like you do now. I was taught that you were baptized in the Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues (which happened to me at age 15) Now I wonder if it was just emotionalism?
My question for you would be did you genuinely experience the spiritual manifestation inside you where you began to authentically speak in tongues. I think it's wrong to suggest that you need to speak in tongues to be saved. But if you genuinely received something that night through the Holy Spirit then why would that just be fake emotionalism
We can find our hearts are persuaded of the truth as we love others, like John said in 1 John 3:18, etc. The fullness of the Spirit will mean the fruit of God's spirit and the most important fruit of all - God's sacrificial and devoted lovingkindness.
Speaking in tongues is not the speaking of gibberish. It is not a "heavenly language." It is not a "prayer language." It was (past tense) the gift of speaking a human language you did not know. The glossolalia passed off as "tongues" today is not of God, but is a mockery of the faith.
@Dean Agnor 1 Corinthians 14 teaches us the guidelines about three spiritual gifts so everything is orderly: 1. Speaking in tongues 2. Interpretation of tongues 3. Prophesying
Assuming glossalalia is real and is in fact how the spiritual gift of tongues is manifest - So you beleive ( in contradiction to the bible) that everyone will get this gift? Comon read your bible. Your either saying that which is unbliblical or saying only some are good enough to recieve the gift which creates the have / have not Christianity 2 tier system seen in pentecostal churches.
Hey Mike, would you ever consider doing an interview with Ben Shapiro? I think it would be excellent to see a discussion between a Bible preaching Christian like yourself and a pretty devout Jew.
This would be amazing. Ben Shapiro having already had William Lane Craig explain Jesus to him, Mike would also do a great job making things very simple
Monday April 18th 1994 around 10 in the morning, I felt something like a heat touch the top of my head, as this happened I was filled with the most incredible joy and I heard distinctly in my spirit "everything is going to be ok". It will be 30 years ago this Thursday. I still wonder what all that meant.
Wow Mike!!! SPIRIT BAPTISM IS SALVATION!!!!! my jaw dropped, heart pounded, and brain was fully engaged in this short excerpt!! THANK you for being literally the 2nd person, 2nd only to the late John Stott in his wonderfully incisive book-- Baptism & Fullness, in my entire 51 years of charasmatic church experience to tell the truth on what we could otherwise refer to as the born again experience. The much sought after gifts of tongues or prophecy or even healing is but a shadow of what great things are to come when we hear our names read from that registry in heaven...Lk10:20
I would urge all of us who doubt or worse, have been taught that Spirit baptism is a subsequent work only after salvation to read and re-read Acts...NOT as an instructional aid but as a description'al' aid...by doing just 3 Things: 1) Word Study time-- find & highlight the words 'saved', 'eternal life', 'salvation', ...and any other pertinent words we find in Acts only commonly related to the born-again experience & heaven 2) Read & re-read each passage with these newly marked words 3) See if you can locate, in these passages you have found & marked, WHERE the Apostles themselves describe how they understood themselves to have been "saved" or recieved "repentance unto eternal life". IT IS TELLING. But each one must search this out to become assured on his/her own. Salvation & the Spirit's baptism being equal, these realities within scripture are often clothed in the language of 'water' baptism (pour, outpouring, wash(ed), pure, clean(sed), clean conscience, etc. We know water can do nothing to purify sin's stain...and so did the Apostles. Titus 3:4-7 1Peter 3:21 side note: I have no confidence in any effort of my own, but the work of God's Spirit reckoning with my sin & lostness has been such a comfort & strength in these troubled days. I pray he will bring us all such confidence!
Brother Mike in favor of suggesting Baptism of the Holy Spirit may be a second distinct event how do you explain Acts 8:14.15 as being a happening post the believers believing in Acts 8:12. Here the baptism appears to be a distinct event following belief..... Holy Mystery?
I’ve heard different interpretations of this verse. But what would you say“But you, beloved, build yourselves up on [the foundation of] your most holy faith [continually progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], pray in the Holy Spirit,” Jude 1:20 Specifically pray in the Holy Spirit. I’m not quite sure what this means, but I’ve been told this is evidence for us “to speak in our heavenly language regularly, “to build ourselves up in the faith. Thoughts?
1. cor 14:4 says that speaking in tongues edifies, so it's not a bad parallel to draw. If praying in the Holy Spirit "builds us up" (Jude 1:20) and speaking in tongues "edifies oneself" (1. cor 14:4), then I think you can make a good case for them being synonyms. 1. cor 14:14 also says that "praying in a tongue" is 'praying in one's spirit' and verse 15 contrasts that with 'praying with one's mind', signifying that tongue-prayer isn't consciously guided. Ephesians 6:18 on the other hand seems to say that "praying in the Spirit" involves conscious prayer for various intentional subjects. Then again, maybe the "with all kinds of prayers" includes both tongue-praying and mind-praying?
I don't see why the terminology would relate to praying in tongues. Paul uses the same language in Ephesians while referring to regular prayer: "and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel" Eph. 6:17-19 ESV
@@Filipalien Yeah. I agree! 💯 My first thought was also that "praying in the Holy Spirit" could mean any sort of prayer that is led or inspired by the Holy Spirit, and this would include both mindful prayer and spiritual tongues. 👍
I was too. I didn't even recognize the gifts that were operating in my life till years later. I had been taught to only read the Bible, and, memorize scriptures. Nothing about how to walk by the spirit/Spirit. I was afraid of the gifts, lol. Little did I know of what God had instore for me, praise God, and, Hallelujah!!!! God bless you Jake Slapp!!!!
@@sandragambrel9721. Yes. I received the gift of discerning of spirits when I was saved, but didn't know what it was until years later. God bless you Sandra.
@Darren. I just watched your vid on the dangers of meditation. I 100% agree. Wish I could comment on your vids, but I get why you have it turned off. I like your "straight-to-the-point," presentations. The "from new-age to christ," vid is good too.
Exactly. Scriptures show that someone can get saved end then later be baptized in the HS or they are saved and Baptized in the HS at the same time. There’s no limit to God if we allow Him.
Many thanks for this. I too was directed to Acts 8.16. My understanding is that Philip was encountering a new group of Samaritans and Peter and John came to validate Philip's teaching. The people were baptised in Jesus Name by Philip, and then baptised into the Spirit when Peter prayed for them, laying hands on them as a sign of validation. I like the translation in many versions where 'in' is translated ' into'. This keeps Father, Son and Holy Spirit as the centre rather than me. I'm immersed in them. I would appreciate hearing Mike's understanding of Acts 8.16.
Actually I found a direct contradiction to your view in the Bible, and I don’t think you can explain it away:
Acts 8:14-17 says
“Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost” (Acts 8:14 -17 KJV)
Pastor Mike, or anyone else in the comment section, how do you explain this?
Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."
An event occurred between Acts 8:14-17, and Acts 10:44-48, that may have something to do with why there is a difference in the way the Holy Ghost was received.
@@MikeWinger IF I understand you right you have apostolic authorty as a pastior like the apostles paul ?

True. Not everyone will speak in tounges. Surely everybody COULD.
And a changed life is key. The fruit of the Spirit is evidence, not the gifts. However, they for sure help live a changed life.
That's exactly what being touched/ baptised by the holy spirit does to a person. You cannot walk away from that and not be changed by it.
Truth ❤
Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Love your teaching Mike, I was one of those that received the baptism in the Holy Spirit with tounges a couple of months after salvation. Then months later after having prayed & fasted for 14 days had an encounter with God that gave me a unique gift of the spirit to serve the body of Christ. So from my experience there were multiple encounters or fillings of the spirit.
you were able to speak in a way that allowed others who don't speak english to understand you? wow
This topic deserves a much longer video!

I know my own faith. I always wondered why I never spoke in tongues. But, the promptings of the Spirit are daily. Not having this miracle kept me out of charismatic churches where the pressure to prove my salvation by tongues was great.
Don't you want to worship like first century Christians?
@Truth Speak What exactly do you believe about Christians and God's spirit?

Amen amen AMEN AMEN!!!!
Me too!
Me too... I start to cry in prayer, when I'm witnessing and sharing the word with others... whenever i feel the Spirit of the Living God... just overwhelmed with His presence, love, peace and holiness. Glory!
For each person it might feel differently. All I have to say, is when you receive the Spirit, you KNOW. There is no question….
Yes. And so many believers talk as though they’ve never experienced it.
Ephesians 1:13
"In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit".
The gift of the Holy spirit must be received through an act of our own will. The Lord is a gentleman in that he wont force himself upon any man or any woman...
The following proves you are correct. The most important thing about the word "baptism" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water.
Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
@@SpotterVideo great scripture references thanks for validating my comment on recieving the H.S.
We are indeed to be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire. (See homepage).
It happened to me at 11.

Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. KJV
@@crsalways yep! That's one of them. But we don't build an entire doctrine off of a single, isolated verse
Again, read my whole comment, think about what I'm saying, and I encourage you to read everywhere that phrase "filled" and "Holy Ghost" appears
If you have no interest in reading what I said, and handling it honestly... then quoting a verse with no other comment is extremely unhelpful, and shows you have no interest in discussion, or truth, only playing whack a mole with strangers on the internet...

A video from Pastor Mike in the morning! Yay, that was unexpected!
I can say there are times I feel the holy spirt more than others. When I follow him on that strong feelings things fall right into place.
God bless
you can ask the Spirit directly and read scriptures. The Spirit will answer you perfectly.
I second this @Harison! I would love a deeper study on this!
I "third" this 🙂
Im not sure if our situations are similar but i can at least kind of relate.
Thanks Mike, I have had a lot of my theology corrected listening to your solid teaching.
Thank you for this, Mike. I have agonized over this for a long time and have come to much the same understanding - it’s so encouraging to hear it from someone I so greatly respect.
As a charismatic who's very concerned with doctrine and apologetics, I appreciate your take on this!
And when we have been given the two most important command by God:
"But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:34-40 NKJV"
AND
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

@@justanotherbaptistjew5659 thanks for sharing those scriptures but it doesn't prove that Jesus is the Messiah ben David for Israel. OR proves to be God at all.
Great Word! Thank you
Read Acts Chapters 1-2 (Focus on what Jesus said in Acts 1:4-5) Pray and meditate on that

I, too, am a former AG pastor, and I too have come to believe as you do. Praise God.

@@philologustate4464 this is not a true statement

“Writes the law on their hearts?!”
All of humanity already has the mosaic law written on their hearts.
Amen brother. Without Holy Spirit regenerate our heart we cannot be born again.
There is more ❤️
Hey can I ask you something please?
Thank you for your testimony

Anything good in our lives is the work of the Spirit. Without Christ we can do nothing.
I guess Peter, John and Paul were members of the elite too.

Mike AMEN AMEN, TO YOUR BELIEFS CONCERNING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
1 Cor 12
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing?
One time I began praying in tongues, and I knew based on the dialect that I was speaking French. I didn’t know what I was saying, but I just knew instinctively that was coming out of my mouth and I was blown away. I’ve never taken up day of French class in my life, and all of a sudden speaking fluently it’s the only time that’s happening.
Most of the time, when I speak in tongues, it’s in a language that I am unsure of. It’s not complete gibberish though. There is a dialect, and certain accents and phrases that come out of my mouth when I speak it. I believe it’s what Paul referred to as speaking in tongues of angels.
@@iamvoicelessmusicAre there people at your church using the gift of tongues to evangelize unbelievers?
At this time I do think speaking some kind of prayer language is potentially biblical. However, the people telling me about it seem to only ever have this prayer language and never the gift of speaking foreign tongues for the purpose of sharing the gospel. I have never seen a legitimate proof online despite spending a good amount of time looking into people's claims. Essentially, I do not doubt God but I have always been disappointed by people making these claims.
@@adamrichardson5224 what do you mean by evangelize to unbelievers? Are you referring to people speaking in tongues in a service where unbelievers are present, or speaking directly to sinners using tongues?
I have seen both; I’ve seen Pastors explain what is going on to unbelievers when tongues is present, including when tongues and interpretation is occurring.
God was glorified mightily.

Even the Greek scholar AT Robertson says about this verse that it should be translated after believing, then he makes a very interesting statement… (paraphrase) but because it disagrees with our doctrine, we must not embrace it
The context actually proves the point further. You will notice that these believers did not receive the gift of the Holy Spirit until after they were rebaptized and Paul laid his hands on them.

@@randalwdeese It is in his books etc. You could get an idea I guess from his videos . "Receiving the Holy Spirit." Basically I think he believes that Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the same as the first infilling. Is is when you actually are indwelt. And John 14:17 might explain "even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."
The H.S was with them (presens) but (Future) shall/will be in them (Pentecost). Just when I thought that I had read every book on the subject written in the last 100 years, you share this author.
Excellent. I was baptized by the Holy Spirit when I became a believer. It was a salvation event.

I received salvation decades before I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and received my prayer language. They were separate events for me.

Thanks for your encouraging post. I'm a Christian/believer in the Lord Jesus who's had chronic illness most of my life.
If someone believes in Jesus, they cannot be demon-possessed. influenced, sure, but not possessed.
Mike, you should do a study on the difference between the filling of the Spirit and the indwelling of the Spirit
No difference

JOSEPHUS: TESTIMONY OF JOHANAN THE IMMERSER (95AD)
But some of the Judeans thought that Hérōdés’ army had been destroyed by God, and that it was certainly a very righteous vengeance for his treatment of Johanan, surnamed the Immerser.
LETTER OF ARISTEAS TO PHILOCRATES (~280BC)
Following the custom of all the Judeans, they washed their hands in the sea in the course of their prayers to God, and then devoted themselves to the reading and explication of each passage.
And I asked this question, “What is their purpose in washing their hands before praying?”
And they explained that it is evidence that they have done no evil, for all activity is done by means of the hands. Thus they nobly and piously refer everything to righteousness and truth.

That's a great point! If I dwell in my house...does that mean I fill it? No it doesn't! No one can explain that away.
So glad you hit this topic Mike. I've been looking for clarity on this specific issue for a while now and very greatful to have your input from a Biblical point of view!
Praise the LORD for His work through you, Mike.
Great great great topic 👍🏼
Mike, this is unrelated, but can you show us a close-up of your books, and maybe point out what you think are particularly useful books for study?

Thank you brother,
I agree! I’ve watched your videos on the Holy Spirit and on Water Baptism.
What about Acts 8:14-17. It says the believers there had "simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus" but it wasn't until Peter and John laid their hands on them that they received the Holy Spirit.
Not to mention Acts 19:1-6! Paul had to re baptise them and lay his hands on them!
Those believers weren't gathered in the upper room to receive the promise of the Spirit at that time.

I think Paul was just trying to convey the message of being united when he says there is "one baptism"
@DiscipleDave DotCom the thing that I wonder about this is the people that don't get the chance for either baptism.....as in the case of the thief hanging next to Jesus that was promised paradise that very day by our Lord.

So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
2 Thessalonians 2:15
@Truth Speak
Yes we do claim to be indwelt by Gods spirit the Holy Spirit because we believe on the promised Messiah that was foretold throughout the Scriptures Jesus Christ God in the flesh
Then Jesus also says in Mark 16 That these signs will follow them that believe and is baptized, it says they will speak in New Tongues

Very good! Good explanation in context. I wasn't taucht this originally but this view makes the most sense to me now!
Of course, it makes the most sense to you, because it sounds the most "logic answer." We HAVE TO accept the truth as it is. The question is: Do I change the truth or does the truth change me?
In John Jesus calls Himself the truth.
@@RuvArit Are you suggesting I'm not accepting the truth?
What is your interpretation of what the baptism in the Holy Spirit means?
I wonder: Doesn't Paul's question show that he knows a faith without baptism in the Spirit? Why else would he ask the question exactly like that? While it will probably be true that these disciples were indeed only John disciples, Paul's question seems to suggest that he was distinguishing between "non-Spirit-baptized believers" and "Spirit-baptized believers."
Would be glad to have an answer.
Regarding the terminology, I agree with you. It is interesting to see how cautiously Luke uses the term "baptism in the Spirit" in Acts. Rather, he uses "filling with the Holy Spirit."
Nevertheless, should we not distinguish how Paul and Luke fill the terms "baptism in the Spirit" differently?
Or that when Jesus did that, he just made them ready or something for pentecost and the true reception. There is no proof they got anything in John. And what about Thomas? He was not there when Jesus did it. Ep 1:13 actually fits more with Pentecost. Why? "The promise" In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the "promised Holy Spirit"". jesus said; Act 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for "the promise" of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
Act 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
You see, the Spirit is the promise, and that was the pentecost experience.

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Amen Brother Mike!!
1 Corinthians 14:27 & 28
If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet and speak to himself and God.

This is the gift of "divers tongues." This is a reference to when someone gives a message to the church (out loud). See all of chapter 14. Speaking in tongues is also a prayer language for believers.
Speaks publicly, loud enough for the entire assembly to hear, it is perfectly in order to speak in tongues quietly to yourself and God.

Yes, you can pray for the understanding.
I love how he keeps a straight face even though the guy is named neanderthalman
I never asked to speak in tongues. Being in the Spirit is enough. If God wants me to speak in tongues surely he would give me this gift.
If you read the Bible, the Bible, does not teach, what you were taught. Sorry they lied to you.
I believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit also gives us tounges as a gift.
But in 1 Corinthians 12 we read speaking in tongues is only a spiritual gift and not everyone in the Body of Christ has the spiritual gift.
@Dean Agnor
1 Corinthians 14 teaches us the guidelines about three spiritual gifts so everything is orderly:
1. Speaking in tongues
2. Interpretation of tongues
@Dean Agnor
Right in the Body of Christ
I hope I can experience that too
I would urge all of us who doubt or worse, have been taught that Spirit baptism is a subsequent work only after salvation to read and re-read Acts...NOT as an instructional aid but as a description'al' aid...by doing just 3 Things:
1) Word Study time-- find & highlight the words 'saved', 'eternal life', 'salvation', ...and any other pertinent words we find in Acts only commonly related to the born-again experience & heaven
2) Read & re-read each passage with these newly marked words
3) See if you can locate, in these passages you have found & marked, WHERE the Apostles themselves describe how they understood themselves to have been "saved" or recieved "repentance unto eternal life".
Titus 3:4-7
1Peter 3:21
side note: I have no confidence in any effort of my own, but the work of God's Spirit reckoning with my sin & lostness has been such a comfort & strength in these troubled days.
Those believers weren't gathered in the upper room to receive the promise of the Spirit at that time. Acts is a transition book.
I’ve heard different interpretations of this verse. But what would you say“But you, beloved, build yourselves up on [the foundation of] your most holy faith [continually progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], pray in the Holy Spirit,”
Jude 1:20
Specifically pray in the Holy Spirit. I’m not quite sure what this means, but I’ve been told this is evidence for us “to speak in our heavenly language regularly, “to build ourselves up in the faith. Thoughts?
I don't know how exactly you were taught, but I support that idea of praying in the Spirit being praying in tongues.
@@punisherlee What specific "tongues"..?
1. cor 14:4 says that speaking in tongues edifies, so it's not a bad parallel to draw.
To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel"
Eph. 6:17-19 ESV
@@Filipalien Yeah. I agree! 💯
My first thought was also that "praying in the Holy Spirit" could mean any sort of prayer that is led or inspired by the Holy Spirit, and this would include both mindful prayer and spiritual tongues. 👍
Well, I was baptized in the Spirit when I was saved.
Same! 🙂🙂🙌🏼🙌🏼
