@@tieflingcorpse9817 lol it costs more then that I was hit by a semi truck running a red light had a compound fractured arm with the bone exposed an inch & a half a broken collar bone from the seat beat & a spiral broken leg from my leg being pinned by the steering wheel & the center of the dash board & it cost far more then $5000 just to get an ambulance from the scene to a hospital let alone the removal from the car through back seat by the fire department nor the half dozen surgeries I had. Lucky I worked for the hospital chain who covered were also my health insurance provider & that it ultimately was covered by the insurance of the truck driver who went to jail as well. These days especially since the flu pandemic healthcare is even more expensive particularly medication. A broken back is probably even more expensive then all of mine as the back & spinal areas are lot more specialized & complex surgeries. Anything goes wrong with a broken leg I might not walk great or lose the leg but you do something wrong with a back &/or a spinal cord & you might not even move let alone walk again. I had a buddy who had to have 3 vertebrae fused & can tell you it was more expensive then my own issues & his was on the job (IED in Afghanistan) in the military covered by the military with military doctors at Ramstein.

I wish they wouldn’t always blame the addiction on taking pain meds after a surgery, obviously that does happen to some, but most don’t end up that way. Good doctors will make sure they are careful about what and how much they write for. I’m in GI failure, if I wasn’t on pain meds I wouldn’t be able to walk or run the tube feed that keeps me alive. I do not take my meds to get high, and I’m lucky because I know other who haven’t had a good team of docs. Their docs immediately stopped their pain meds without warning, leaving them in excruciating pain. People who want street drugs will get their drugs no matter what. My cousin, who is in recovery told me that most addicts won’t even try to go to the ER for drugs because they won’t get them generally. He said they only go there when they are broke and desperate. We need to do something about drugs, but blaming everyone doc to the point of scaring them to quit writing for their patients who do meet the very strict guidelines for narcotic scripts isn’t the way. I had a friend go to the ER with four broken ribs and they wanted to only give him Tylenol.

I 100% agree. I have Spina Bifida and have had around 70 surgeries over 40 years, pain meds absolutely have a place for mostly acute pain, but there are certainly times they are needed for some chronic issues too. Problem is, like with a lot of things, there isn't a great deal of education out there for chronic pain sufferers. I got lucky and went to a month long program that dealt specifically with chronic pain. Best thing to happen to me in a long time. Was successfully weened of opioids and learned a ton about pain and pain management that helps me to this day, but when things start to break down, like my current 3mo fight with necrotizing pancreatitis, you can be damn sure I'll still take opioids when necessary.
