Just found this video and its great. I throw one handed using house balls and always felt uncomfortable using thumb on most house balls. tried to change to no thumb one hand but could not figure out what the issue was until I saw this video.
I started bowling with out my thumb realized I had to down size on ball to from 15+ to a 12-14 lb to have more control on my release and my swing great video
Eventually I am going to make a good video on ball weight. If I could do it all over again, I would have used only 12 pounds at least my first 2 years. You feel the ball weight a lot more without your thumb. It's not a pendulum swing, and are much able to better control a lighter ball than someone who uses their thumb. Over time you'll develop stronger muscles in hand and wrist, so you can gradually go up in weight. If someone uses too heavy a ball b/f that, all they are gong to do is risk injury. Art of Bowling has a really good video on ball weight and how a heavier ball doesn't necessarily hit harder. In fact, going up in weight can decrease power.

I Took an 11 year break from bowling due to health issues but now I'm trying to be competative. Thanks. I'm happy people have found my content useful, and I do plan on making more videos. If you posted some shots with a little better camera angle, I could easily make an analysis video. Some things you do are good. Such as your first step moving ball, you push the ball up a little, not out. What I've come to realize is that no-thumb is not a "pendulum" swing, but more of a cradle. Pushing the ball forward and out, is actually counter productive. So your little push-up is a way I've seen people who are good no thumbers get control of ball. It's a little push up and then ball falls down into place. Holding the ball with balance are further into the approach also helps w/ control. The issues I see which could make a video covering are the need to do more of certain things - more spine tilt, get ball more under your shoulder. From your second month video - you can see the index finger isn't quit under the ball. But that might be better now. Some things just take time to lean, develop strength and flexibility. Anyway, what I was seeing in some common issues - causing people to be firing the ball from knee height (in other people I've seen waist high), with hand far away from body. It's easy to see on your 2cd month video, but a big reason for these things is time to develop strength and flexibility in legs and spine to get into a good finish position.
@@nothumbbowler1802 im gonna try to increase the quality of my videos for sure. Maybe invest in a tripod. Reviewing my own videos has almost been as helpful as actual lane practice
Started bowling about 2-3 months ago. Am averaging ~205 in my 3rd and 4th game. (I bowl 4 and the first one is warmup) Now all of a sudden I dropped to like 185-190… Not so sure what’s going on. Maybe I formed a bad habit. Or maybe it time to get a better ball.
As you get better your revs, axis, and ball speed tend to increase. If your using a lower end ball or a ball drilled weaker its very possible youve outgrown your ball. If you put a piece of tape outside your PAP(pro shop owner can mark it for you) and shoot a 60fps video of your throw you can find your axis, rev rate, and average ball speed. Using these you can find the PERFECT ball for you! When inforst got my histle wine my ball speed was about 14 or 15 mph, which made the ball super early and almost unusable. Now I throw at 17 or 18 mph and the wine basically finds the pocket on its own. Of course before you get a new ball try deep cleaning the ball your have now and/or resurfacing it to a more agressive finish. Surface is about %30 of a balls reaction
I’ve been bowling no fingers at all I just put the very tips of my fingers where the holes are and palm it. they’re too small anyway . Been bowling 140-150s just started like a month ago. Never bowled before. Me and my buddy’s joined a league for fun, starts tomorrow! But my approach is similar to this minus the two fingers in the ball.
did you have to drop weight to start with no thumb? I tried yesterday at the lanes and I couldnt hold the 15lb ball like I use with thumb. Was thinking of buying a 13lb ball to just learn with
@@chriswinton Yes. You can switch styles. You just need different balls. The only thing that is illegal is throwing a ball drilled with thumb hole, without putting your thumb in the ball.
On 01:17 (Daria) the ball is not under her head. Maybe half of it. Maybe. The camera is at an angle. The camera on Dougherty is dead on behind him. Same goes for the guy at 03:05. Camera is at an angle. But nice analysis on the rest !
So I primarily bowl with my thumb, but have been getting blisters on it and don't want it to get worse so I've been thinking about trying to learn to bowl without my thumb. But whenever I try, I have no idea how to rest the ball on my wrist and forearm without it immediately feeling heavy and hurting my wrist. Any tips?
Well, the most basic solution could be to have thumb re drilled with pitch towards blister, which may help relieve it. As far bowling without thumb, you will start using different muscles that are not used to the weight. It's no longer a pendulum swing, but you have a weight on your arm that you are pulling up. Besides having wrist more flexed, the biceps remain somewhat flexed, putting much more stress on them, compared to with thumb. I would suggest that most people start with a lighter ball, gain some muscle and then go up in weight.
What you you recommended as far as finger holes/grip? Im new so i dont think thats the right terminology. I am have trouble holding the ball with the 2 fingers and im afraid of dropping it when its too heavy. Im 25 and tall but kind of noodle arm, so i stick to 12 pounds or so but want to be able to use heavier ones. Thanks
It's fine to start out with lower weight. I should have stayed with 12 lbs longer, until you build up muscle strength in hand and wrist. I will be putting up a video very soon about how I have ball drilled and grips. For me my middle finger is currently: 1/2 left, 1/8 forward Right finger: 1/8 right, 1/8 forward To keep things simply for now - was using grips oval in front, round in back. I sink them about 1/8 inch into finger hole from the top of the hole, and put my fingers in to the second joint (same depth as a conventional grip). At my second step (of 4 step approach, so that would be step 3 of a 5 step) I try to focus on "catching" the ball between my thumb and index finger, and let the ball rest on the outside of my forearm. Not sure if that help, but it's what I do. I have most of a video done about pitches and grips, so maybe it'll be up in another week. Figuring it out has taking a lot of experimentation.
I know a no thumb guy who swings his arm away from his body instead under his head and he averages 220+ but the form you are showing definetly looks more natural.
I would think that would be incredibly difficult to do on a sport short and be accurate playing different angles, from different areas of the lane. Tom Smallwood has a really weird arm-swing. He seems to get away with it b/c although he palms the ball like a one hand no thumb bowler, he does put his thumb in the ball. Although with thumb pointed forward, instead like backwards like everyone else who uses thumb.
I've been a two finger bowler from the start I figured it was how ppl made the ball spin (I've grown up playing baseball kid to college and semipro) BUT I guess I'm a bit of an extra Odd Ball because I bowl with my (Middle finger and my Index)..... (Curveball) but I have occasionally lost control to drops too early but I do have a high game of 278
In a way it makes more sense to hold the ball that way, b/c want to have weight of ball on the radial (thumb) side of forearm. I've lost control of ball enough times, all part of learning what to do and what not to do.
I just bought a ball, my hook happens too soon, I think the ball is too heavy for me as I’m dropping the ball more than rolling it off my hands losing forward momentum but everyone keeps telling me 15 lbs is good for me How do I roll a heavier ball off my hands with no thumb?
I'm working a new video, which will probably be helpful. I have a lot of content I need to make. This is a very short answer, to a question I could write a long essay about, but... You have to maintain full, external rotation of your hand, until you are ready to go into the release. You are dropping the ball, because you are unable to hold the ball properly, and are internally rotating your hand early. This will cause the bowler to push/shove the ball down, and probably miss left a lot of the time. I suggest picking up a 10-12 lb house ball, and slowly practice holding the ball without dropping it. Maintain full external rotation (fingers under ball as much as possible) until you go into release. Do this without worrying about score. A light house ball will likely slip out of your hand a little early because it has no grips or tape in it. Don't worry about that. Just practice how to hold the ball properly. You have to learn how to hold the ball in a way that suites your body. Fingertip? Conventional grip? Spread your fingers apart or not? How to you stabilize the ball on your wrist? Before you go up in weight to 15 lbs (if you ever even need to do that) you first have to learn how to hold the ball with lower weights. Ball weight is the most irrelevant, misunderstood thing in bowling. Art Of Bowling has a great video about this. I don't use 15 lbs. To buy a good ball that will hit well, the minimum weight you need to get to is 12 lbs. Unlike all those dumbasses, I have thrown all the weights and even have practice 300's with 12, 14, and 16 lb balls. Ball weight is such a big topic, I absolutely will make a very, detailed video about in the future, because I know this stuff is happening, and want to try to educated people b/f it does.
Awesome I will most definitely start off using lighter balls and get the form down I thought 15 was a bit heavy and unnecessary and bra I kept missing a lot to the left taking out the two or three pins there the first turn And then hitting air the second and then the pins get reset and it happens all over lol I look forward to your upcoming videos

I'm a no thumb bowler also. I have a huge issue with my ball hooking very drastically and hitting more towards the 4 pin. I set up more like the first bowler all the way to the left of the lane and release towards the 3rd to 4th board and aim towards the 6th to 10th Pin. Do you think I may be putting TOO much spin on the ball?
Another thing you could try is a ball with less hook. The speed thing is the key for me and I actually throw towards the gutter about two feet in front of the 10 pin (mostly focus on where the ball is breaking rather than a specific arrow because lane condition is a huge variable as well). With my lower hook ball I can start in the middle, throw to about 2 boards from the gutter, and hook back to the pocket. The speed on the screen says I’m at about 17.5 mph. If I throw about 13, I can get the lower hook ball to go from left gutter to right gutter to 7 pin.
The best option here would be to speed up your ball to match your rev rate. More balanced styles score more and are easier to be consistant with. As a rev dominant bowler accidentally dropping your ball speed by just 1 mph can make an otherwise perfect shot 4 pin or worse. A balanced bowler can go up or down a mph with much less impact on his line. He can miss left or right of his mark more than a dominant player as well.
Two finger bowling is the hardest to get good at but when I started bowling I instantly set up with only two fingers. I never knew the difference or that it was different. That’s just how I started and am not going to change. So I want to get better at it.
Using angles to show perspective, but the perspective being at different angles... That is just faulty logic. You may be explaining solid theories... but if you do it by using faulty videos, then that just makes you look bad...

This is a very short answer, to a question I could write a long essay about, but...

Awesome I will most definitely start off using lighter balls and get the form down
I thought 15 was a bit heavy and unnecessary and bra I kept missing a lot to the left taking out the two or three pins there the first turn
And then hitting air the second and then the pins get reset and it happens all over lol
I look forward to your upcoming videos

I'm a no thumb bowler also. I have a huge issue with my ball hooking very drastically and hitting more towards the 4 pin. I set up more like the first bowler all the way to the left of the lane and release towards the 3rd to 4th board and aim towards the 6th to 10th Pin. Do you think I may be putting TOO much spin on the ball?
If you put more speed on the ball, it will counter some of the hook you are giving, which gives you "MAXIMUM POWER"
Good info
Two finger bowling is the hardest to get good at but when I started bowling I instantly set up with only two fingers. I never knew the difference or that it was different. That’s just how I started and am not going to change. So I want to get better at it.
Ty
There is no w in the world ball, but nice video thanks for the help.
The arm is for balance it’s all about spin rate tbh
Keep it up!!!!
I’m a 2 finger we need a community
My avg was about 220
Btw with some vodka lol I was young 🤣
My dad does that with no thumb one hand and he bowls like he uses a thumb
i forgot how to bowl with my thumb that's why i'm one handed two finger😂

Using angles to show perspective, but the perspective being at different angles... That is just faulty logic. You may be explaining solid theories... but if you do it by using faulty videos, then that just makes you look bad...
You look better
