Totally agreed with you when you said something was off about the fire, the way it blended into a kind of muddy effect, however personally I think you went from one extreme to the other with it. One of my favorite things about some of the old masterworks that you can see in museums is to look for the painters trouble spot. The spot where they changed their mind a bunch. There is a self-portrait in the DMA's Wendy and Emery Reeves collection that if you look closely, the artist hated the placement of his hand with the paint pallette. You can see where layered over the original position with his new placement of the hand and pallette.

I taught myself acrylics during the pandemic, and I was intimidated by oils, but then I tried them earlier this year. I went through the same stages you did -- intimidated by it, what sorcery is this, how do I use it to my advantage, etc. We watched a bunch of the same tutorials too! lol In the end, I've almost completely switched to oils and very rarely use acrylics anymore. I LOVE oils!! Now I want to paint a dragon for some reason...
I am so amazed of people who can paint like this! Like, you had this vision in your head and you managed to beautifully put it out for everyone to see! It's simply amazing (and I'm a little jealous haha)
Thank you for this! I have been hiding from oils for 20 years with every single thought you had. Seeing you master it (on your first try!) has inspired me to stop overthinking and put paint to canvas! Thank you for not just showing the technical process, but sharing your thought process as well.
Martina, you are incredibly talented in every way, with everything I've seen you create, but the oil paints seem to show your talent even more than the acrylics. That dragon is seriously sick! 😍💕
You at 4:47 is me always. I start the base with the oil paint and thinner -- looks great, then, I just stare at it. FOREVER! I am actually amazed at how you managed to pull this off, you went from 0 to 500. Who paints an apple and then makes a freaking dragon?!!! The lighting is what actually captured me, absolutely love it. And one of the things I've noticed (both when you use acrylics and oil) is how much you actually achieve with very few colors, very intense, I can feel the cold in the scene, when its actually full of fire.
An amazing first foray into oil painting! I highly recommend going back to some Bob Ross videos with oil paints instead of acrylics. You'll get a better feel for blending and even layering with oil, and of course the result is always something someone will want in their home
I think it looks amazing and it's more impressive considering that it's your first time with oils. Ir happens the same to me, I only paint in acrylics and gouache and fils oils kinda intimidating, I haven't tried them yet. Btw, I think the thing that looks weird on the painting (and I've noticed you did the same thing on other paintings) is that you're painting a red/orange color on top of tje blue to simulate the light from the fire but the red/orange your using is actually darker in value than the original blue tone, so it doesn't actually looks like a light source but just red paint. I think you sould make everything darker before applying the light and saturated orange tones on top of it to make the effect of fire light :). Keep up the great work, I love your channel!
I don’t know why you doubt yourself, you are an amazing artist!! You did an amazing job and inspire me to try oil paints, which I too am intimidated by. Thank you for sharing your first try with oils!! Your fire technic is so awesome!!!
I want to start with oil painting myself now just because of this video. I’ve never painted and i’m not artistic at all so this is going to be a deep learning curve. Awesome painting, awesome dragon :D
I have never been artistic at all, but about a year ago I started watching someone restore art and it piqued my curiosity so I bought some cheap oils and a cheap folding easel from Walmart. (I would actually recommend buying the cheap oils from Hobby Lobby when they are on the weekly ad at half off. The WM oils were so horrible I almost gave up.) I am still no artist and I am not producing masterpieces, but putting brush to canvas is now one of my favorite things in the world to do. If you decide to give it a try, there are many wonderful tutorials here on youtube that can guide you on the journey. I am not sure, but I think the apple she did came from the same tutorial here on youtube that I followed for my first successful painting. Even with next to no talent, I have seen enough improvement in my skills that I no longer want to hide all my paintings when anyone comes around.
I can't say anything different from the other comments about the wow of this dragon piece. But again, your understanding of color and light has amazed me. For me, I understand it in a finished piece; I see how you apply and use it. But I struggle to create that myself. I love watching you work! I'd have never guessed that you never painted in oils before. Awesome work Martina!
Pro tip: Use olive oil to clean your pallet and hands when you're done painting with oil. To do this. Clean with the olive oil (not water). Then dry with paper towels.
You can do that to loosen the pigment but you should absolutely still clean your brushes with solvent or soap after that! The problem is that olive oil will not harden so of you get it into your oil paint when painting the next time, your paint will not firm up completely on the canvas
That looks fantastic Martina! I sometimes enjoy painting landscapes with oils, however I usually paint the background colours in acrylic, so I can add the foreground details in faster without the worry of them blending together, or having to wait forever for the oils to dry. It also means that I can hang them up while they are drying and not have to stress over them leaving paint on the wall.
If dry time is an issue, you can just use galkyd to speed up the dry time. Will still take a day to dry depending on the amount of paint you apply. If not, then waiting is best, otherwise cracking can happen.
I love it. Your first oil painting (other than the apple, which was really just a test) is truly spectacular. The individual facing the dragon in your painting reminds me of you facing the oil painting dragon. You tamed it and the result is awesome. Keep up the good work.
I have a hate/love for oil paint, you can do a lot of things with it that you can't with acrylic like blending and your able to get some texture with it, where acrylic is flat. But it takes so long to dry, and I'm a order in the chaos person so it gets everywhere when I use it, lol
It’s interesting that every medium has its own method of use. For instance, when using watercolors we usually leave the white and bright areas on the canvas without painting them, or painting them last. It’s great experiencing the different mediums… playing with them 😃😃😃 Your dragon turned out awesome 😃😃
I recently discovered this channel, and I’ve been binging on your videos since then. I’ve always been a creative person, but I’ve been in a rut lately. These videos have given me a boost in creativity!
I love oils! My grandmother was a well-known oil painter before she got sick and passed. One of her paintings is still in the White House library today. You did an amazing job, especially considering you basically taught yourself!
@@moritzroos87 yes! That’s her ☺️ I do not remember which one it is- it’s been there for a long time- I think since before my dad passed. So I probably should have said I assume it’s still there, because we’ve never gotten it back lol
@@masumigartman4262 Couldn‘t find any more details either. Your grandmother looks like someone who had interesting things to say. The internet is a weird place. Greetings from Germany! Take care.
The best thing about oils is the texturing you can put into the picture to give it 3-dimensionality to the image. I love running my fingers over (dried) oil paintings. Sorry to hear you both had covid. Watch out for over-doing it now that you're better. And yay for the puppy!
Oil paint definitely seems like the teacher every perfectionist needs. It has a curious way, by it's very nature, of teaching the artist that the end result is protean. It will change, and it will morph, and the beauty is in the journey, not the grandeur of the finished piece. The parts you repaint, the layers that never seem to quite erase the ones that came before; they're there to teach you that the 'mistake' was a part of the whole. It's not a step back, it's a step in an unexpected direction. In your case, unsurprisingly, both the journey and the finished piece are incredible. Keep safe, keep shining. We can wait. It's always worth it
So impressed. Oils are such a change from acrylics. Of course you rocked it. The beauty of oils is that you can do an under color in acrylic first then your oils on top.
I’m writing this with tears in my eyes. Thank you for the content you create and for trying things out of your comfort zone and actually showing us when a mistake is made. It helps me get out of my freeze response to creating stuff. Your art and channel are inspiring I wish you the absolute best.
It's so motivating to see your whole process! With the clock for the real time it took you, and your thoughts, struggels and how you overcome them. For me it shows how much of creating something is practice, and trying new things. And a great skill tree needs time to built!
This is why i love Martina. Shes so enjoyable to watch, she makes the end of my days laughing. Thanks Martina!!! And the painting looks great.....as ALWAYS. OILS ARE FUN, LOL.
I may not be a painter, but I do relate with how you think about dreading an art project like that. The whole thought process of far away it looks fine, but on closer inspection something seems off in our own perspective. But you still pushed through that dread and overthinking and made something so amazing. It's motivating to just push through and simply do it and not overthink so much when drawing ♡
Wow. You are a true fine Art artist. Skilled so crazy, and yet so humble, it keeps on amazing me. Another great project, so glad I ran into your channel.
Wonderful First Oil Painting! I have been enjoying your videos for a couple years now. I have been painting in oil for 30+ years so here is my tip for anyone who really likes acrylic paint: Do a complete underpainting in acrylic monochrome: Dark to light and every mid tone in between... [ and Ballpoint pens work for fine line under sketches as well! ]. Make certain the acrylic underpainting is completely dry (a week or two) When you finally commit to laying on oil paints, use an ALKYD medium such as Winsor & Newton Liquin to speed up the oil drying process (often oil paints cut with Liquin can set up to the to the touch in less than a day, allowing added glazing or shading etc.). Best of all you can use Liquin to create transparent color glazes that allow the acrylic painting underneath to show or shine through! :-) Acrylic first... Oil Next. This may be obvious but do NOT use acrylic on top of oil... it will simply not stick. Cheers!
Honestly love how fearless you are in jumping into new mediums. Every time you end up making something amazing! (Just a side note, please be careful with what kind of oils you use, many oil paints in regular brands contain cadmium which is highly toxic)
My partner and I we were just griping last night about how you guys haven't released a new video. Thank you for giving in to our complaints and tantrums.

I like painting with oils, but it takes so long to dry once you're finished, and you have to store it really carefully because you can wreck an oil painting so easily with just dust because it will stay tacky for so long. Weeks/months if you paint thickly. I ruined a bunch of paintings not storing them right.
@@liz4133 so if you want to keep it safe find a corner a place that no one will go there and check it out and if you want tha painting to dry fast you can ask in art supplies store they can help you find a medium for quick oil painting

Thank goodness you guys are both healthy and congrats on the pupper! May your lives be fill with fun and fur💚🌼😄
It's so beautiful!!! I just love Dragons! Hard work paid off really well.
If it wasn’t in the middle of the night I would go painting now because this really gave me inspiration. I bought oil paints for a couple of weeks ago but still haven’t used it because I haven’t had the motivation but I think I will try it now. Thank you for inspiration and amazing painting!❤️
Masterpiece’s are not painted in a day, especially when they are in oil. Amazing work! You could never tell that you haven’t used oil paints before.
bob ross would like to have a word with you. lol
Martina: I've never painted with oil
Also Martina: *creates a masterpiece*
Your reactions are priceless because we all been there and it’s constant struggle. At least for me I can relate big time. Gorgeous painting btw!
Then dry with paper towels.
dish soap works well too!
@@nunyabusiness164 I use Dawn or whatever equivalent on my brushes to clean them
You can do that to loosen the pigment but you should absolutely still clean your brushes with solvent or soap after that! The problem is that olive oil will not harden so of you get it into your oil paint when painting the next time, your paint will not firm up completely on the canvas
using murphy’s soap is the best bc it’s oil based! Great for brushes and hands!
That montage of you wandering around the piece with your coffee and then lying on the floor and yelling at the ceiling was supremely relatable
It’s great experiencing the different mediums… playing with them 😃😃😃
Your dragon turned out awesome 😃😃
I recently discovered this channel, and I’ve been binging on your videos since then. I’ve always been a creative person, but I’ve been in a rut lately. These videos have given me a boost in creativity!
I love oils! My grandmother was a well-known oil painter before she got sick and passed. One of her paintings is still in the White House library today. You did an amazing job, especially considering you basically taught yourself!
Masuko Gartman? Do you know what painting of hers is in the White House?
@@moritzroos87 yes! That’s her ☺️ I do not remember which one it is- it’s been there for a long time- I think since before my dad passed. So I probably should have said I assume it’s still there, because we’ve never gotten it back lol
@@masumigartman4262 Couldn‘t find any more details either. Your grandmother looks like someone who had interesting things to say. The internet is a weird place.
Greetings from Germany! Take care.
@@moritzroos87 thank you so much!! Take care and stay safe!
@@moritzroos87 This is what I LOVE about the internet :)
I appreciate you show your full process, even the research and studies to understand the new medium!
I love watching how you tackle new things and give a peak into the ups and downs of learning. To conquering your own dragons! 🔥
Thanks for sharing your gift with us, its always mesmerizing to watch your paintings come together.
That painting wasn't just "pretty good", it was an absolute MASTERPIECE! 💛
Martina you are an artistic genus. Oil paintings, are never good close up but magical at a short or long distance.
Lol, I love how your first time using this new medium, you pick an incredibly complex creature to paint!!! 😂
Awesome job, Martina!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I just love the textures in oil paintings...you created an awesome piece here!! love the lighting in it, the composition!
Someone said: “Beauty Will Save the World”, well this channel is part of that beauty for me.
Trying something new like that, so publicly is tremendously brave! You absolutely smashed it and should be super proud of yourself!!
Martina: "I've never done this before"
Some hours later:
*a masterpiece*
Martina, you are my Hero! Whenever I get stuck, your enthusiasm pushes me forward! Thank you! ^^
My partner and I we were just griping last night about how you guys haven't released a new video. Thank you for giving in to our complaints and tantrums.
I was thinking the same thing!
I know very little to nothing about art and drawing techniques, yet watching you try to strive for perfection and stress about little details puts a big stupid smile on my face . ty for doing what you do and i have a sincere admiration for your passion and craftwork.
Martina,
You have just proven (again) that you DO NOT over estimate your abilities. If anything , you severely underestimate the talent that flows from your fingertips!
Thank you again for an amazing piece of art. Keep the aspidistra flying!
Paul
all i can think about is 100+ years from now someone may restore this painting
I like painting with oils, but it takes so long to dry once you're finished, and you have to store it really carefully because you can wreck an oil painting so easily with just dust because it will stay tacky for so long. Weeks/months if you paint thickly. I ruined a bunch of paintings not storing them right.
Do you have any tips on how to store them the right way? Thanks in advance
They have mediums to make the paint dry quicker
@@wanderlustaesthete4117 Liquin is your friend
@@liz4133 so if you want to keep it safe find a corner a place that no one will go there and check it out and if you want tha painting to dry fast you can ask in art supplies store they can help you find a medium for quick oil painting
@@Annn424 Thanks!
Wow. The painting looks absolutely gorgeous. You're such a great artist and everything you put your mind to comes out beautiful.
I.. just realized she has this battle scar and I'm so upset that I've literally been watching her for years and never even noticed. I even went back to the first video I watched of her and yup its been this way the whole time and I'm just oblivious. This just goes to show that her art is so good that I become engrossed in the process and not pay attention to other details

Are you referring to the half-missing finger on her left hand; I think she may have injured herself with a power tool (she does not use them correctly)?
I saw that too and wondered how I hadn't noticed before.
@@TheMunros
I didn't notice her missing half-finger at first, but have you noticed that she tries to hide the injury by tucking her hand under the edge of the table when working and other places?
Orange and blue is on of my favorite color combos, so I’m very pleased to see you work within it! Thrilled to see you expand in mediums
You managed to pull THAT out while trying a whole new and different art medium for the first time!? Man.....life is unfair
As another person who has painted in every medium BUT oils b/c of your exact reasoning I have also wanted to try them for your same exact reasons. This was such a great idea and I love LOVED watching you go through this process🥰 Your a 👩🏼🎨👑
You know, you can use acrylic for a quick underpainting and then go over it with Oil, but you can't paint over oil with acrylic
you can also mix the two though it isnt advised, i did it by accident in highschool when i accidentally oicked up oil instead of acrylic for one color, it works but everyone gasps is shock and horror when i say that.
@@AnnaMae41194 curious, how did it hold up over time?
@@j.ascension7 fairly well once it dried, no different than either of its components. but you couldnt paint over it. it was thicker than acrylic and more smeared than painted.
@@AnnaMae41194 interesting
Martina, you are so damn impressive. You have such wonderfully big ideas! Your passion is so evident in every challenge you create for yourself & I count myself lucky to be able to come along for the ride.
Oh my God you were just so d*** talented! The entire piece is beyond stunning! I thought I was impressed when it was just the slightly illuminating smoke that you were concerned about being muddy. I Then, you added more detail to it more blending to get it the way you liked it and I was completely blown away even more than before! You are just so talented beyond words! And then what gets me is you'll try a new medium that you've never tried before in your life and will somehow just outdo yourself!! I wish I had even 100th of a percent of your talent! Just beautiful!
This is incredible! Your talents are unbelievable. You knock everything you do out of the park. Congrats on your new puppy and I'm happy to hear you are both feeling better. I look forward to your next project
You're so awesome lol. I feel like you underestimate yourself sometimes instead of overestimating your project. And Florent is an awesome teacher! Oil is AMAZING and they make oils you can clean with water now! I switched from acrylic and now just use it for the base layers. I swear you were born to create - everything you attempt just turns out so good 😘
omg this is incredible!! ive always been so afraid of oils, watercolour is much more in my comfort zone, its so fascinating to see your process and watch you learn! keep up the great work :D also- i love the sweater you are wearing in the ad ahh so cute
You are such a great artist! I am always inspired when I watch your videos. You have even encouraged me to experiment with new mediums, and techniques I didn't feel I could do. Thank you for all you do, and thank you for helping me to grow as an artist too.
Wow !! You are so very talented! In so many ways! I've not seen many people try oil painting for the 1st time and pretty much master it!! And put so much time and effort into mastering it as well! It's inspiring!

You're awesome! I watch painting vids a lot, so many indistinct blobs with no perspective or depth about it and people gush about their talent, this is what I call talent!
Glad you are both recovered from C! Congratulations on your puppy!! This painting is beyond words - you are just so amazing at everything you put your hands to!! ♥
I love to see your process to tackle a new medium! Very helpful
I have literally been researching oil painting this last week and watched a lot of the same videos you did, and now I get to see someone I actually know of take a shot at it. So cool. I’ve already prepped my canvas I’ve just been waiting to have time.
You are so smart and talented. I think the oil paint colors look slightly deeper or richer than other paints. Something like that. Your painting looks awesome!
I first watched this video right before starting my own first oil painting in class. My painting is finally done and I’m super happy with it, so now I’m back here watching this video again!
