@vibewithmike I watched your story on ABC. You so deserve the recognition, Congratulations. Thank you for sharing all of your videos and many, many of your boat friends. Well done, my friend!!!
It was an incredible experience recording the ship, especially on the coldest day I’ve ever filmed since starting this journey. What made it even more memorable was witnessing the first day of ice forming on Superior Bay and watching the ship break through it as it traveled from the bridge to the dock. There’s something captivating about seeing a ship breaking ice, it’s powerful, dramatic, and showcases the raw beauty of winter on the Great Lakes. Do you enjoy seeing all the cold weather with the snow, or do you enjoy the ship breaking ice, or both?

Karen, we’d love to have you and Duluth to check things out. Trust me the beach is very fantastic in the summertime. It’s one of the best beaches around. Extremely soft sand and beautiful scenery out there. However, the beach isn’t so great when it’s 35 below zero Fahrenheit.
Good Lord, that looks cold! Don't think I've ever seen frozen sand before. As the ship came through the sea smoke and the flock of birds flew up, it was beautiful.❤
Wow! That was REALLY cool. Laurentian approaching through the sea smoke looked incredible, and I've never seen a ship plow through ice before. That was really neat.
Today wasn’t super thick, but it still was the first ice of the season that we get to watch a ship hit. Take a look at this news story that I released yesterday about this channel. I think you’ll like it. All the best you cool hand!
Back in the 80's, they used icebreakers to keep a channel open along southern Georgian Bay in the winter, about a mile offshore. You'd be in your ice hut halfway out and the ice would start to groan and bang, and the water in the hole turns into waves that sometimes flood the floor. It was especially fun when you had someone from the city with you. All the elevators have been turned into condos now and the big grain boats don't come there anymore.
Hey Mike! Another bitter cold day you are recording. Go get something warm when you are done my friend. Yes, you definately have to watch where you are stepping by the canal in the winter. Never know where the ice is. You can sure tell that she has ice on her. It was very cool to see her breaking that ice. I can just imagine the sound of the ice even by the edge of the bay, Thank you so much for braving the cold and filming this for us. I hope you have a Merry Christmas, Mike !! I hope you are having a good sunday. I will catch you later. 🥶🙋⛴
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm having a great Sunday! My friend Karen, hope everything is right down there in West Saint Paul. Can you believe that Minnesota gets all that snow and cold and then all of a sudden this coming weekend in the Twin Cities it should be 40°. Get ready for a huge warm-up and get ready to get your beach chairgoing😂😂😂😂
That was cool Mike , im always surprised that these boats don't have more ice on their bows ,i would just expect to see them heavily draped in ice lol.thanks again for sharing and braving the cold, and wishing you a Merry Christmas 🎄
👍👍👍👍👍👍Hi Mike. Thanks for enduring that kind of temperature to bring us todays ships. The ocean going ship standing off and only seeing her upper decks was erie. Today was even too cold for the Boat Friends Snowman. Duluth has been called " the refrigerator of the US " and today proves it. Going to have to get some battery heated outer ware Mike . Get out if that wind as soon as possible. Great video. ---Michigan
It’s my absolute pleasure! Even though it’s cold, I would not miss it for the world. This is what makes ship watching in Minnesota so unique. That cold.
Another great video Mike!! Always love seeing the CSL ships, brings back fond memories of out family friends in Thunder Bay! Merry Christmas Mike, wishing you and your family all the best over the holiday season. Cheers my Boat Friend. 🥂
There’s Mr. breeze! Always great seeing you. I don’t know if we’ll be able to chat before Christmas but I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and I do have some fun videos coming over the next few days possibly with ice and snow.
Lumpy! We all look forward to seeing the ships in the winter and in particular breaking ice, even though the ice wasn’t super thick, it was the first ship pushing through that ice and I really enjoyed it. I hope you did as well. Please have a wonderful Christmas if we don’t chat before that. All the best to you and yours. Thank you for being such a good friend to the channel for so long.
And now you deserve a hot chocolate, Mike! Winter hasn't come to the Netherlands het, but with your videoreport I can feel it. Have a nice christmas, all boatfriends! Warm greetings from Heerenveen, The Netherlands, René
Happy holidays! I hope everything is great in the Netherlands. Thank you so much for being part of the channel. I did get in and had hot chocolate. Luckily my vehicle is not far away after the ship.
@vibewithmike By the way... Did you know that Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands (born Petra Laurentien Brinkhorst, 25 May 1966) is the wife of Prince Constantijn and sister-in-law of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands? So although it's an Canadain ship, there is some connection 😉
I found some additional information Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, born Petra Laurentien Brinkhorst on May 25, 1966, in Leiden, is a prominent member of the Dutch royal family. She is the daughter of Laurens Jan Brinkhorst, a former Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, and Jantien Brinkhorst-Heringa. Laurentien’s name combines her parents’ names, Laurens and Jantien. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Queen Mary University of London and a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, showcasing her international education and academic achievements. In May 2001, Laurentien married Prince Constantijn, the youngest son of then-Queen Beatrix, officially becoming Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands. The couple has three children: Eloise, Claus-Casimir, and Leonore. As a member of the royal family, she has taken on a range of duties, balancing public appearances with her work as an advocate for literacy, sustainability, and conservation. In 2004, she founded the Reading & Writing Foundation (Stichting Lezen & Schrijven) to combat functional illiteracy in the Netherlands, an issue close to her heart. In recognition of her work, UNESCO appointed her as Special Envoy on Literacy for Development in 2009. Princess Laurentien is also deeply involved in environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives. Since 2012, she has served as President of Fauna & Flora International, the world’s oldest international wildlife conservation organization. Additionally, she co-founded the Missing Chapter Foundation in 2009, which aims to include children’s perspectives in decision-making processes on sustainability. Her contributions to these causes demonstrate her dedication to creating a more inclusive and sustainable world. Beyond her advocacy, Princess Laurentien is an accomplished author, having written several children’s books, including the “Mr. Finney” series, which introduces young readers to environmental themes. In recent years, she has expanded her focus to social innovation, co-founding the Number 5 Foundation with her husband, Prince Constantijn. The foundation works on innovative solutions to address societal challenges, aligning with her broader mission of systemic change. Her multifaceted contributions, spanning literacy, environmental conservation, and social entrepreneurship, highlight her commitment to making a meaningful impact on society. Through her work and public engagements, Princess Laurentien continues to be a key figure in promoting sustainability, education, and intergenerational dialogue on critical issues.
Very cool! There is something mesmerizing about watching and listening to a ship go through ice! Thank you for braving the elements to give us another great video Mike!
There’s my man Mike! Mike great seeing you man. I figured you’d be interested in looking at the ship breaking through the ice. The ice wasn’t too thick, but it still was cool and it fit the bill for a ship lovers. I love seeing something unique and different. That thin sheet of ice was no match for that powerful ship. I wish you and your family, a fantastic Christmas. Thank you for being part of this channel all year.

It was the coldest video that I’ve recorded 35° below zero Fahrenheit, but I’ve been out in colder weather. I don’t know if I could record another video on that cold like that. Geraldine, it’s always a wonderful thing when I see you left have to comment.
I'm so very proud of you Mike !!! That was a supreme eye opener I have a much deeper respect for you then anyone else😮 I know I stopped the video at just 2 minutes in and now I'm going finish it

This video I did not use the noise canceling microphone. It was the raw Mike, which made it difficult to hear me at some point, but it did intensify some of the other things like the ice.
Yes, it was so fun watching it arrived. The ice wasn’t as thick, but there was ice and it was fun watching a crunch all the way through. I hope you and your husband and family have a wonderful Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and to your family.
Boat friends take care of Mike it is Christmas. I donated to your PayPal. You are more than deserving. I appreciate your work and passion for these ships. I really enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas!
Really enjoy the videos! My uncle was a Chief Engineer for Cleveland Cliffs on Great lakes ore boats from the mid 60s through the mid 80s. My mom's family is from Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Our extended family still has a place in Door County. I want to make a side trip to Duluth next summer. Brings back memories of meeting my uncle in port East Chicago in the early 70s....we took him to dinner as we lived in Northwest Indiana. I've been to Sturgeon Bay a few times in winter and saw the ships laid up for winter. Great stuff!
That is so awesome! I’ve done some research on the Cleveland cliffs vessels. I think that is so cool. Do you remember which ship he was on? Possibly many ships I’m guessing? Hey Mike, and ALL THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION, from a balmy 31 degree with freezing rain Bismarck. Icy cold in the old Dtown with a wicked wind turning up the wind chill to downright nasty levels. Missed the live but at quarter break with the Vikes so have some time. Those clear as a bell days tend to be very cold, and with that wind it becomes downright unbearable. We got to see the first icebreaker as it were go through the Canal, so we got that going for us. Hard working Laker as evidenced by the dock burn on the sides, but still a beautiful Laker doing its job. Hard to imagine the smoke coming off the water at these temps, but it is right there for everyone to see with their own eyes. Great Video Mike, time for a hot drink!!! Later man…..
It sounds like it's a real winter wonderland in Bismarck. Hopefully, you guys are staying warm and safe! Keep in mind it’s gonna start getting warm and Duluth very soon. You never know what kind of ship video is coming.
@@vibewithmikeThese last few videos have really run the gamut as far as showing what winter is like in Duluth. I wonder how many folks realize just how freaking cold -35 degrees is even if that is with the WC. MIKE I give you props for being out in that weather to bring us this video in these conditions. That is what it takes to make this channel the success it is. Hard work, good photography, and Gitche Gummi, the Big Lake, to be respected……..
I’ve been waiting a long time to show you what’s going on with the winter. Unfortunately, it’s been pretty warm but now things have turned where I can show you cold. I have many more good videos coming for you.
That’s actually really cool comment! Thank you for being such a nice positive person. It’s really cool that you watch the video and talk extra time to do this. What I typically do is keep my recording equipment very warm until just before I go out with the ship. We both know that that battery life will not last too long. I’ll make sure the battery is full and then I get out there. I have seen that battery drained very fast, but fortunately, I’ve always been able to get those Recordings done. I wish you and your family the best. Thank you so much for adding some positivity in the world.
Mike, thanks for being out there in that brutal cold. I love hearing the almost electrical like pings from the ice. I used to live on the Rideau River south of Ottawa, ON., and we'd often walk the dogs on the river in winter, and hear those sounds.
It’s interesting that you say that, those electrical light pings from the ice are really odd when you hear it, but they get really mesmerizing the more you listen to it
Roderick how are you this evening? Luckily it will be warming up in Duluth. I’m out of state at the moment. I look forward to getting back there with the ships.
@@vibewithmike I am doing well and so is the family. I have lots of firewood and there is a lot of American football on and that makes me very happy. And I certainly look forward to your videos. Holiday wishes.
@@vibewithmike The Vikings are a very good team. I am kind of crazy about KC. too. Great head couch, and Mahomes is amazing. But it's all elite level. So we'll see what happens. I do not enjoy seeing players get hurt although I know they leave with bruises. I was once asked to play against a women's varsity team. Man, did I live black and blue for days. They do not mess around. So, go Vikings.

Johann, luckily I got out to my vehicle that was very warm right after this. This is what makes it fun though, these cold conditions. Recording a ship when it’s 80° and sunny it’s just too easy and not as entertaining or fun.

Another wonderful comment from you, Robin. I wish you a merry Christmas. Can you believe how fast Christmas comes every year? It must be the fact that I’m getting older. Time is all perspective right, all the best to you on a Sunday night.
I sure enjoyed watching the ship cut through the ice. My cousin's father in law was a captain on one of these Great Lakes ships, back in the day. I'm 77, so I am thinking it was over 40 years ago. Back in those days the Lakes had so much ice on them that shipping had to stop before Thanksgiving, my memory may be faulty, but seems like they didn't go back out until end of March/beginning of April.
It was a much different time, but it’s fascinating to hear about your family’s experience on the Great Lakes! Merry Christmas Kathy! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👋👋👋👋
OMG Mike... Bless your heart for going out in that freezing weather to get us this footage of the CSL Laurentian entering the Harbor and breaking through that ice. I saw a few other brave souls also out there, I'm shocked the horn worked on the ship for the captain to give the salute. The Laurentian sliced through that ice pretty easy. Excellent video my friend. Won't be long before even the entry way of the canal will be iced over and the Tugs will have to be keeping it open. Go warm up Mike!. I think this excellent video on a super freezing day deserves a Tall Hot Chocolate for You!!! ⚓🚢⚓

That's what I was waiting for! Wishing you lots of below-freezing weather and ice in the harbor!
I hope we get more ice in the harbor. This is what makes ship watching fun.
Another great winter video. Thank you so much for braving the cold. The lake and ice are beautiful. It sure gets cold up there! I remember 40 below!!
Amy, I think I’m going to pass on recording a ship in that situation😂😂😂😂😂😂🧊🧊🧊🧊❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️🥶🥶🥶🥶
Wow, incredible. Hats off to 'ya for filming at that temperature. I feel guilty watching this in shorts and t-shirt!
It's always a great day to film ice breaking in Duluth! Shorts, I could only wish
Mike, I love your videos! I'm on the Keweenaw Penninsula in upper michigan. We have a lift bridge here too!
That’s really cool that you have a lift bridge, and you’re on the Keweenaw Peninsula! That’s right on the lake!

Great Video Mike I Enjoyed It Thanks For Posting Have A Great Sunday Night😊
I hope you have a fantastic Sunday night, Anthony
Good Lord, that looks cold! Don't think I've ever seen frozen sand before. As the ship came through the sea smoke and the flock of birds flew up, it was beautiful.❤
I know, right? It was the coldest day I’ve ever been out there recording a ship. I’m really glad I went out there to see the ice getting broke.
I love hearing the ship breaking up the ice and😊 seeing the sea smoke! Thanks Mike.. another great video!
Could you hear those cracks that made it all the way from the ship crack in the ice to the sheet where I was? All of those ice sheets.
@vibewithmike oh yes! I knew what was coming so I had my volume up!
Absolutely📣📣📣📣📣
That was way cool! Great job! Thanks so much!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
What a beautiful vessel the CSL is. Thanks for capturing this ship in such cold weather. 🚢
Nice to see you back for another video, I’m glad that you enjoyed this ship
Thanks for sharing the video. It's always neat to see things happen with the big vessles.
You definitely need to check this one out th-cam.com/video/QihEpEsWUcM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QhARetteHf1-XKvQ
Love watching the ships! Especially in the winter time!
Me too! It's a whole different world for ship watching in the winter.
It's interesting to hear about the icebreaking in Georgian Bay!
Nice treat on a cold Sunday! Happy holidays Mike! And thanks.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, and happy holidays to you too!
Wowww!!! The saltie looks like she's floating on clouds. Amazing video.
That’s a great looking ship. And it’s fun to watch and break through the ice.
Thanks Mike!
Any time!
Wow that’s Cold , ThankYou !!’ Great ship😊
35° below zero Fahrenheit with the windchill
@vibewithmike yes Mike. We get the snow and cold and then 40. Crazy!! I will go and plant some more banana trees. 🍌
⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
The ship coming out of the fog was awesome. Has there ever been a time in Duluth when the ice has gotten so thick that ships couldn't get in or out.
---Michigan
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm bundled up in my gear, but that wind is brutal, even with all the layers.
Wow so amazing! Please stay warm...thank you so much for your dedication..
Judy, thank you so much for the nice comment tonight. I wish you a fantastic Sunday.
What a amazing video mike
It is officially nippy in Duluth. Beautiful video, Mike.
It sure is! Also, it was cool seeing that ice with a ship
I'm sitting in my La-Z-Boy, with a comfy blanket, snug as a bug in a rug. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting Mike. Love your videos! 😊❄️☕️
Kickback in the La-Z-Boy and watch these ships, my friend. That’s what it’s all about.
Great video Mike! Thanks for braving the cold.

Still, a beautiful day in spite of the frigid temps and ice. Thanks for sharing. I love that sea smoke! Way cool!
I'm glad you're enjoying the sea smoke as much as I do, it is truly beautiful!

It was so cool to see!
I enjoyed both. I like the sound of the CSL going through the ice. Thanks, Mike, for braving those super cold temperatures so we could watch. 😊

I like that your format captures sounds like the ice breaking. Really gives us all a much better feel for what it's like to be there!
This video I did not use the noise canceling microphone. It was the raw Mike, which made it difficult to hear me at some point, but it did intensify some of the other things like the ice.
That morning my husband and i were fascinated watching her power through rhe ice. Another fun moment in time. Thank you, Mike!❤
Yes, it was so fun watching it arrived. The ice wasn’t as thick, but there was ice and it was fun watching a crunch all the way through. I hope you and your husband and family have a wonderful Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and to your family.

Cool Mike! Thank you!!
Really appreciate you taking time out of your evening to watch another video
Kudos to the durability of your recording equipment! How anything mechanical can function in temperature extremes is well beyond me.
It’s interesting that you say that, those electrical light pings from the ice are really odd when you hear it, but they get really mesmerizing the more you listen to it
@@vibewithmike it's almost like nature playing music.
A good tune at that
Yes, it's pretty cold alright. -1C here in Newfoundland. Great video. Thanks for braving the elements Mike

It’ll be tough to even compete against Kansas City. We did win today though.
