  • Remember when NBC decided to cut off the ending to the Jets/Raiders game in 1968 to show the start of the TV movie Heidi, and people on the East Coast missed the Raiders coming back and winning? Well, one year later, in 1969, NBC decided to give Heidi a second chance, and aired it at 7:00 Eastern after the game between the Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills. Except, once again... this game ran long. Would NBC make the same mistake twice?

    I should mention: after the Heidi Game, NBC changed its policy, stating no game should ever be taken off the air until it's ended. And that was before the merger, when the broadcasting contracts then required all networks to show the game's entirety as well.

      Years later, during the original version of the XFL in 2001, NBC made a policy where a game airing on a Saturday night had to be cut off at 11 pm Eastern Time, regardless of whether or not the game was over. This policy still exists today, and it's why any sporting event airing on NBC in a Saturday evening time slot begins at 7:30 pm Eastern Time, be it Notre Dame football, _Big Ten Saturday Night,_ or the USFL. This was put in place to protect _Saturday Night Live_ in the event of a first-run episode in the aftermath of a highly-anticipated episode hosted by J Lo being pushed back 45 minutes (and airing on tape-delay) due to the XFL game going into double overtime.

    There's even been a "Heidi Game" in the NHL involving the Buffalo Sabres as in 2007, NBC inexplicably cut off the start of the OT period in the series clinching game in the Eastern Conference Finals between the Sabres & Ottawa for most of the country (apart from Buffalo) to show the Preakness. Hockey fans across the country were absolutely livid by this & had two options to find out what happened. One was to flip over to Versus (which later became the now defunct NBCSN) or if they lived close to the border (especially if they didn't have cable) flip over to CBC. NBC should have in this situation aired the Preakness on Versus & finished coverage of the game but were contractually obligated to show the Preakness on big NBC when it was ready to start due to it being a Triple Crown race. For those wondering how the game ended, Ottawa won 3-2, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final where they got beat by Anaheim in 5 games.

    • @danielanderson4726
      @danielanderson4726 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wonder why NBC didn't just air the Senators-Sabres game on both NBC and Versus in this case, to avoid having to switch to the Preakness.

    • @johnboutet7560
      @johnboutet7560 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The head scratching part of that is they cut to the Preakness PRE-RACE coverage. It wasn't even the actual race. They cut away from an OT NHL conference final playoff game to cover horses sitting in their stables. It was a slap in the face to the entire game of hockey.

To give an example using a different sport, after watching the movie _The Mighty Macs_ (about the pioneer women's basketball team), she pretty much became obsessed with Immaculata and wanted to watch them play. Literally wvery single game we have been to took less than two hours, even if it went to OT. Have you ever seen any college game on TV take less than two hours.
      And another example, I started off at a D-III college, and while I usually didn't go to the football games, it was mandatory on homecoming weekend. The game lasted right around two hours. So, basically, the game gets stretched out by over an hour to feed the TV beast.

    Interesting they would schedule Heidi for that particular Sunday given it also was a potential Game 7 of the 1969 World Series in Baltimore that could not have started before 2:00 PM had it happened. Had the Mets not won that World Series in five games and they had to delay the Bills-Raiders game to at least 4:30 PM if not 5:00 PM ET, would NBC have also delayed "Heidi" to 7:30 or 8:00 PM ET?
    It has to be remember the original time the whole mess happened in 1968, Timex was the sponsor and they would have sued RCA (NBC's then-parent company) for breach of contract had that movie been delayed even a few minutes. Plus, especially then, delaying "Heidi" could have delayed the rest of NBC's lineup meaning local stations would have had their lineups delayed and that could have caused problems, especially since back then many stations had to be off the air by a certain point in the overnight due to transmitter maintenance and/or local laws AND if "Heidi" had been delayed, there likely would have been a ton of complaints to the FCC, especially from Churches that had far greater say back then as many of them frowned on professional sports then (and still do in some cases now) as many of them associated pro sports with gambling. NBC at least by then had the sense to simply delay Heidi a few minutes this time.

THAT could have caused chaos for the whole day, especially if the game went into extra innings as NBC was broadcasting the Series. That would have been a problem for many NBC stations that either had a movie after local news or other programming as back then, many stations had to be off the air by a certain point to perform transmitter maintenance or local laws required stations to be off by a certain point.
