That is astonishing to me that both sides of a building of that age, at that height, after a devastating fire, is level. Amazing enough they got that done initially, but that it is level to this day is just incredible. Dan was right--he's a lucky man, and for lots of reasons...
I hadn't expected anything less. Victorian craftsmen were top notch.
Open to the elements too for forty years. If fire and weather don't twist a building nothing short of Yellowstone erupting would. Truly safe as houses.

Either that or they weren't level when the building was built, but the high side settled.
It’s very impressive, but remember that this was c1900, not 1800’s technology.
The owner used advanced steel construction methods adjacent to the classic masonry techniques.
He also got to build his home on a flipping great pile of rocks just beneath the surface, that’s gonna help a lot to eliminate subsidence!

Great, how exciting is that. Engineering from 120 years ago. That is why it’s still standing today. Not even the fire could destroy that. So exciting to see the holes being bricked up and starting to look pretty.

It's interesting that despite the years the house has been standing and the years it has been without a roof, it has not moved statically. For decades, water has been leaking into the foundations and walls and there has been no movement. It's a well-chosen location and builder.
THAT is what I was thinking. WTF is under that foundation in France!?!?
@@chrisdowns8859 Dan was lucky to get the Chateau. I think a few folk who glanced at it said *No not much good building or land* So tough for them and great for Dan. (I reckon there's quite a few folk about kicking themselves as they didn't have faith in the old builders).
@@chrisdowns8859he mentioned previously that the are has a very low top soil layer with rock underneath. That's why the trees aren't holding there, the roots push up against solid rock. The foundation is probably on that very rock formation. So unless a major earthquake hits it'll be solid.

It's been built on bedrock. He mentioned that few vids back. So it's a rock solid foundation literally. It wouldn't even stand today if it was built on sand. It would just collapse few years after the fire.

Here in the US, there are new multi-million dollar homes that aren't even close to that level. Pretty amazing considering not only it's 120 years old and stone but it went through a total loss fire!
I am always sad when the weekend approaches as I won't be able to see Dan and crew doing their magic restoration. Yes, they need a break, but this project is now my happy place. I have been a lover of building restoration for decades and this is my absolute favorite 😊. Love to see the guys and the pups! ❤

It amazes me that the job tools are all running on solar with battery backup. I would think that a temporary electric service would have been installed by now. Surely will need it to run all those high powered tools.

They show how level the surface they're on is. They wouldn't show the level across the length of the chateau as the laser did. Its great to see the quality of the old workers remains sound. No subsidence is fantastic.

That's the power of water levels. They're still perfectly useful for some tasks. That mixture of masonry and unparallel, specialized skill labor will deliver that plumb straight and literally laser level surfaces. I use to live on a house 130 years old as well, it was a challenge to make holes for electric systems of fitting a Fischer system to secure anything, but the walls were dead on straight, and the plaster was mostly Ok still.

Dan is so "Chipper" and "Mellow" he is a healthy "Vata." He has chosen activities which are quite "Kapha" which has balanced him. Dan has really lucked out with all the different work he has chosen.
I would imagine they used a water level. A tube of some form. Water is always level so two ends of the tube will always be exactly level. Ingenius and simple.
Absolutely incredibly level for ANY building, to say nothing of one that age and condition

Building your masonry wall up tight to the bottom of the roof deck will act as a fire break in the event there is another catastrophe. Do the same on the other wing of the chateau (where you are starting to build the roof system now) and you will have left wing, right wing and core separated by fire walls.
Were it me - I would set the ridge beam all the way across when the walls are framed. Then you can frame to the ridge beam. There should be no alignment problems if you take this approach :)

100ft, or 30 meters of clear tubing, a bucket of water on a table and a marker and you can check level almost the whole building.
This is called hydrostatic levelling😊
The ancients used basically ceramic pipes and pots on each end to build some of the wonders of the ancient world. The setup had to be torturous, but they accomplished it.
In the 19th century, clear tubing wasn’t a thing, but sight glasses and rubber hose made the job much easier than what previous generations had. The distances they could find level on with these leveling tools was staggering. These are the levels that helped survey the transcontinental railroads in the age of steam.
They still do that to this day in Sri Lanka.

Pre GPS and Laser, Optical survey instruments like theodolites, transits and levels were awesome. One simply checks the needed measurement by recording 2 or 3 stations of the survey instrument, one from one end , one in the middle (if needed) and one set-up on the other end. average the readings and most instrument error is removed. I'm so glad for U, your Fairie Queene Chastel surely has excellent foundations underpinning her lace and fine appointments, superb construction accuracy, even footing settling. It speaks volumes about the exceptional original engineering and how it survived the fire still standing proud.

Every time I see a plant removed from the structure of the chateau, I smile. More greenery on the ground outside, less in the building inside. Lovely.

I've watched you work on this since I saw you checking it out for the first time. I said to my self "no way" can this be rebuilt, but you are amazing. Doing the first side (75%) by yourself. Now your ready to put the rest of the roof on, and now the main structure is sound. Been great watching it come together.

I followed your channel when you first started working on the chateau, but life was crazy and I didn't get the chance to watch the journey until just this last week.
