It was my great good fortune to have met and worked with Maestro Sawallisch at EMI. Invariably courteous and smiling, he was a gentleman, unassuming and, despite his international stature and reputation, a man without attitude. A man to respect. This shines through the remarkable recordings he made, of which the Schumann set is simply a delight, illustrating the musicality and understanding he brought to the podium. With many thanks for sharing this.
How lucky you were to meet such a great man. I admire his Mendelssohn symphony cycle and he has ruined all other versions of Mendelssohn's symphonies for me, because they are the gold standard!
I’ve never heard Schumann, with his huge enthusiasm and over-abundance of orchestral ideas, so finely executed by any orchestra. Sawallisch interprets Schumann in Schumann’s way, adhering strictly to the interestingly scrupulous dynamic markings for different parts in the symphonies, creating a sonically masterful experience!!

Yes YOU have good ears. I am fortunate enough to own this set of CD, a most powerful, scintillating, thoroughly convincing, compelling authoritative interpretation of Robert Schumann's great 4 Symphonies, nothing comes this close. This historical recording have set a shining, if not everlasting highest standard for Schumann Symphonies. Every pieces are breathtakingly conducted to a perfection, an imaging of the scores are just so wonderful. Great milestone in the interpretation of Schumann's score which dwarfed all other maestros of his time. Listen to the majestic finale of Symphony No.2 when trumpets shout out triumphantly pointing towards the heaven accompanied by most grand beatings of the timpani, it is a tear-jerker. Bravo Maestro thank you so much for your great Music, may you rest in Heaven.

Like Brahms' 1/2/3/4, Schumann's 1/2/3/4 all have great value of musical impressions. Schumann and Schubert musics are good for approach and enjoy with dignity and beauties of classical music.

I've tried searching all over but could never find the complete Symphonies with Fürtwangler. Missing the Rhenish symphony, my favorite. I like the sets with Klemperer and Szell and Karajan.
Yes the Karajan is a classic set. It divides opinion though. He is pretty much persona non grata these days. His conducting style & aesthetic approach to music being irrelevant. It's astonishing. And deeply ignorant. He was indulged & over recorded - but there are amongst his 200 or so a significant number of high quality recordings which have stood the test of time. And some that are definitive.
1/2/3/4 are equally superior as like Brahms 1/2/3/4 and are very beautifully romantic. Swellfish's recordings of 1/2/3/4 may be the first class for several centuries till end of Classical music (?) because of clarities, straight forward interpretations, abundant romanticism inside, and passion for Spirits of Rhine.
Obviously, Schumann had add-on musical ideas from the accumulations of Beethoven and Schubert and expressed different and add-on beauties of musical soul. I hope I will have chance to conduct all 4 Symphonies in the near future.
Please, It is possible for you to separate this recording from 02:28:23 on the two CDs of the album.?? 1 - 11 traks 2 - 08 traks Sorry excuse and thank you very much.! If you can, fine and if you can not, all OK and no problem.!!

A personal view: I would rather hear a symphony by Schumann than his contemporaries on account of the pure joy of music making, the startling originality, and the spontaneous warmth of feeling that shines out. I admire and love the Brahms symphonies, but you are always aware of the work that went into them. Their impeccable good taste can become tiresome. Not so with Schumann.
Schumann's symphonies may not be as good as those of Brahms, but I think his themes are more fetching and charismatic. There is a joyous flair to them we don't hear in Brahms.
Too fast connoisseurs: I love Otto Klemperer's version of Beethoven's fifth symphony with the Philharmonia orchestra. So slow, but absolutely majestic and unforgettable. Every other interpretation of this symphony to me now sounds comically fast.

And deeply ignorant. He was indulged & over recorded - but there are amongst his 200 or so a significant number of high quality recordings which have stood the test of time. And some that are definitive.
Obrigado!!!
Ohhh you are a conductor, great ! Where do you practice?
Where do you work? For what orchestra?
bless you!
I really think that Sawallisch's cycle is maybe the best in Schumann( at the same level very few others versions)
I agree.
Am I hearing an unpleasant tapping sound caused by the unpadded sticks used on the timpanies?
Please,
It is possible for you to separate this recording
from 02:28:23 on the two CDs of the album.??
1 - 11 traks
2 - 08 traks
Sorry excuse and thank you very much.!
If you can, fine and if you can not,
all OK and no problem.!!

It is also in the "posted message" of 2 months ago.
But I want to pass the video (converter) to mp3 CD-R
and it is very long, like my years (66) and I do not
understand well. Thanks again and. . .
Greetings from Buenos Aires.!

I will make the audience an offer they can not refuse.

Nothing that a good conductor cannot cure.
The commercial interruptions render this useless. Go with Sir Jon Eliot Gardner -- no interruptions on that presentation.
Dumb recommendation on this great upload. You should stop complaining and just install an adblocker.
@@kennethdower7425 The critique is valid and important for those expecting a proper (and respectful) presentation of significant art.
@@pacz8114 Wrong. Did you ever consider the fact you're simply a pretentious idiot? Look into it. Good Luck!
@@pacz8114 In that case why would you choose to listen to the squashed dynamics of music on TH-cam?

Schumann is Beethoven's symphonist heir.
Beethoven/Schubert -> Schumann -> Brahms
Schubert; hold my Austrian beer
Schumann's symphonies may not be as good as those of Brahms, but I think his themes are more fetching and charismatic. There is a joyous flair to them we don't hear in Brahms.
Not as good? Overall, they are much better.
Musicians I have spoken to prefer Schumann.
💋
The liner notes are nauseating. Rock-solid performances though.
Deslike, there are too many ads.
Ads between movements I can live with. Ads in the middle of a movement is unacceptable......... no subscription for me; I'll go elsewhere.
You couldn't afford a free adblocker? Too bad for you, so long!
Good but too fast.. Tempo by Furtwängler and VPO is unmatched..
Too fast connoisseurs: I love Otto Klemperer's version of Beethoven's fifth symphony with the Philharmonia orchestra. So slow, but absolutely majestic and unforgettable. Every other interpretation of this symphony to me now sounds comically fast.
I like Szell better.
Useless "comment". Bravo 👏
