That fight with Dustin showed two things: Islams striking keeps improving as he out-struck Dustin. And that Islam has great conditioning and cardio. To do that traditional wrestling ankle pick followed by the choke in the fifth round. The only thing good you can say about Dustins performance is his defense for the takedowns made him last to the fifth.

There is a third thing he showed: he's a finisher. He could've easily coasted to decision that round, but he proved a point. If that was Edwards or Pantoja in that 5th round, it would go to the judges 100%.

True. I like a fighter who is a finisher which is why I like Islam. Islam has said he doesn’t like for there to be questions left in the air if he doesn’t finish. He has also said repeatedly he doesn’t like rematches. If you look at someone like Leon’s mma record there is way too many decision wins. Islam I like best if he continues to win through a diversity of different finishes.

Also I have a feeling that Islam genuinely wants to stand and show striking for all the guys that used to hate on Habib for wrestling most of the time. Islam stands and strikes so that fans like him more. And Islam is the best representative of a complete "Mixed Martial Artist"
Ask Islam to comment on that and he will tell you. Khabib fought with his toes broken in Gaethje fight and it was beautiful finish. These guys do not think of these issues as a big deal. They have the mental edge. As for Islam, Khabib saying Islam was his father's favorite student is enough
Brother this is simple, Islam can’t rely on durability like Khabib did, he tried early on and got knocked out so he had to develop his striking more than Khabib to compensate for that weakness. Which means Islam isn’t as developed as Khabib when it comes to the Ground and specially Control & Ground and Pound which will make him less dominant than Khabib just going forward, taking down people against the cage and then keeping them there, ground and pounding them and tiring them out.
Not only striking, Islam wants to show dominance in general. After Volk 1 he was unsatisfied and wanted another opportunity to show his level, other fighters would be like "I beat fkin Alexander Volkanovski, that's good enough."
Both Islam and Javier said the staph infection had zero effect on his performance.

Agreed. Maybe it's just because Khabib was so dominant and didn't take as many shots but that MF's chin is ridiculous. He was stunned a few times by Gaethje but never wobbled when he was landing absolute bombs.

Khabib drains his opponent with undisputed pressure then go for the finish when Islam always looking for the finish despite his opponent condition. Fight style, IQ and ability are totally different.

Khabib is Khabib and Islam is Islam. They’re 2 different fighters. Khabib was great and Islam is great and getting better every fight. Islam while not as dominant as Khabib has already shown a more rounded skillset than we’ve ever seen from Khabib. Khabib was world class yes, however he was more a product of who he matched up with and we’ve never seen him actually tested. Islam has been tested and passed on multiple occasions already.
Islam is all rounder fighter, an Elite one. He should strike freely whenever he is controlling and feels good during the fights. That will make him more dangerous for his opponents.

Islam, in a way, is greater than Khabib. He is already a much better striker and he routinely fights with master strikers like Poirier, Oliveira and Volkanovski. Of course, Oliveira is a BJJ Wizard but he's a very hard hitter as well and a technician on the feet and Islam was generally simply getting the better of him. Volk had just run a masterclass on Max in fight 3 and Islam was very much his equal on the feet. Khabib is a stronger chain wrestler and mauler than Islam and he wrestled the strikers, that's why he was more dominant. Look how he almost never stood with Poirier and one of the few times he did, he got clipped. The rounds Khabib lost were on the feet to Gaethje and McGregor, where he was out-struck.
Although khabib didnt have a very good striking than Islam....but khabib had another important aspects on striking defense, that is a granite chin, good head movement and fight iq better than Islam
