Okey we need to CLEAR something up here 😂 In Europe we have Mars and Snickers PROTEIN bars, 0 sugar and 20g protein. It isn't the regular bars but a PROTEIN one! 🤝
Prices have just gone WAY up for groceries EVERYWHERE, so don't blame yourself! Wishing for Grim to recover quickly, and all of you to have a great week!
I remember when she said in an older video how much more expensive it is there become the transportation issues but a lot of prices are very comparable to what I pay in Southern California. I think I even saw something cheaper at Svalbard.
YES THEY HAVE! I'm in Ohio in the United States and our grocery bill has doubled over the last year. And recently our electricity supplier contract was up (they gave us no notice) and our bill went up almost 200%! We signed up with a new supplier so the bill will go down a bit in the next couple months but I don't know how people are able to afford to live right now.
Cecelia! I was talking to my grade 8 students (13-14 yrs) about ice caps and glaciers, and we watched one of your videos (Not this one). They loved it! Especially Christoffer and Grim. There was a whole conversation about the guns polar bears, the logistics of food etc. Thanks for the great footage! It was so fun letting them see your lives.
Cecilia, just wait till you are menopausal, then you will really enjoy that ice bath. Lol Because that's where I'm at, hot weather, hot showers, hot places, they're miserable.

Oh,how I love just being with your little family and following all that you do. It's so funny to hear Christopher , after having helped you setting up your icebath, saying adamantly: "N0" when you, Cecilia ,are asking him if he is going in!!! You bring me such peace. What a great idea to make a 'cold' tub! Now being an oceanographer, the first thing that came to my mind was...the water will freeze! Your best option (in my opinion) to decrease the freezing temperature of the water would be to add salt. Ocean water has a typical salinity of 35 parts per thousand (3.5% salt content) and freezes only at −1.8°C (28.9°F). Your tub will still freeze but it may help. I was also thinking that the seawater also contains lots of other beneficial salts. So pumping your water from the ocean would be another idea since it is too far down to climb up and down. But you might have already found all this information from Mr Google. Any ways....food for thoughts! Have a good week!
haha! I agree! Atmoshperic physicist here! Just wanted to suggest adding salts as well !! Fahrenheit 0 is actually derived from the freezing temperature of a water and salt mixture. You should look up what percentage of salt will lower the freezing temperature. The more salt you add (up to a saturation level), the lower the temperature will be.
Yeah I agree with pumping the water from the ocean. Those little pumps aren’t super expensive or I’m sure you could borrow/barter the use of one from someone? Then you are bathing in the beautiful ocean water and it won’t freeze!
With life being so stressful, I stumbled upon this channel last week and have been using it as my "escape". Longyearbyen seems like such an ideal and beautiful place.
Cecilia, you are a real powerhouse, you work like a man and chip in with every project. Christofer is very Lucky to have you with all the chores you do!
How to stop water from freezing. Here in youtube you will find videos farmers have made to stop their large troughs from freezing in the winter. They use motion to stop it from freezing. Sometimes a simple plastic bottle with enough water in it to keep it from blowing away works. The outside wind keeps it moving and bobbing which prevents freezing. It’s really cool!
Woho, awesome. I hope people don't think I am weird but I love to have you, Kristoffer and Grim (well, your awesome videos at least Cecilia) as company for my sunday dinner. The upload timing is just so perfect and it have become a weekly routine for me. I know this will be a great video, they always are.
What do u do with your food waste, recycling, and garbage? To keep the water from freezing. Try finding a way to keep the water moving. Lots of people in Canada will use. A small under water pump to creat circulation.
I’ve seen you wear that gorgeous blue polar bear sweater before and absolutely love it! If the knitter would take orders, I bet you could keep her in business for years making more of them. I know I’d buy two alone!! 😀
Sending hugs to Grim. Hope he gets better soon. He looks like our pet that passed. His name was Tundra. We rescued him and they said he was a husky mix but now that I see Grim, I am thinking he may have been the same breed😊
We have a hot tub that needs extra heating during the winter months (Utah, USA) and we use a heater that you put in horse troughs to keep them from freezing over. It’s easy and very inexpensive. Good luck on your soaking tub!
Bit late to reply but that might not be allowed on Svalbard actually. Afaik, the reason houses are on stakes is to protect the permafrost I think. So the tub might damage that?
A good way to keep a handle on food expenses, is to make a weekly meal menu (taking advantage of food on sale,) and maximizing leftovers for lunch/ dinner the next day. At the store, you shop off the menu ingredient list.
I haven’t looked it up, so I can’t say for sure, but it seems if you added some kind of salt to your ice bath water, it wouldn’t freeze unless it got a lot colder, similar to the ocean. Have a great week!
Cecilia! Greetings from Portland, Oregon. My girlfriend and I have a recommendation for you to cut your monthly costs on groceries: We recommend buying more produce and raw ingredients (beans, rice, potatoes, quinoa, barley, onions, pasta, and other vegetables/fruits) instead of prepackaged and processed foods. The raw ingredients are much cheaper, healthier, and will make you a lot of meals, versus the processed foods that disappear quickly, and cost much more. We enjoy watching your channel, and as a couple who visits Iceland often, we love your passion for hygge and a cozy atmosphere!
I was watching PBS Newshour in New York and they did a story on a seed bank where they store seeds from all over the world and when they said it was in Svalbard, Norway, I was like, " I know that place!!" Have you ever mentioned that in any of your videos? Anyway I am so thankful that you have introduced that part of the world to me, something I would know nothing about. I love watching your videos and so admire your lifestyle. Thanks Cecilla!
Try keeping a plastic football in the ice bath. The air inside the ball will be slightly warmer than the air outside, so should help with the freezing surface. The ball will also give the ice somewhere to expand to, rather than pushing out and cracking the bath walls. People who keep fish use tennis balls, so the fish can come to the surface to breathe.
Dear Cecilia, to keep your tub water cold, you need to add styrofoam panels on each side and also bottom and a top... like a hot tub. Each panel should have a minimum thickness of 10 cm (20 cm would be better). Then you need to immerse an electric heating element of 1500 watts inside the water tub. If you keep the water in the tub for a long period, then add a 1/4 of a liter of liquid bleach to prevent bacterial growth or order a small bucket of chlorine tablets that are use to sanitize hot tubs. The styrofoam panels will block sunlight and prevent algae to grow. Adding salt does not prevent algae to grow and the tank to freeze like an ice block. You would need so much salt that you may become Lot’s wife (reference: Bible).
My daughter in law is 6’1” so if you want to feel tiny come visit. Where I live you can buy A frame shaped, double ladders for children’s above ground pools that would make getting in and out of your ice bath much safer. Maybe look and see if you could get one there or build something similar. Grocery prices have jumped everywhere so I’m not surprised your bills have gone up so much.
Putting a wooden decorative shield around the water container will make it look nicer. just like a lamp with a lampshade looks better than a naked incandescent bulb hanging on a string attached to the ceiling.
Your place is really interesting, the best part of your videos are these grocery shopping hauls and daily life updates. It really amazes me. Greetings from Philippines!
Congratulations on having over 600k subscribers! It’s great that more and more people are enjoying the adventures of Cecilia, Christoffer and Grim on Svalbard!
little advice for the grocery budget situation: It looks to me like (almost) all the things you listed as a "want, not a need" are things that will keep for a few weeks, a month. So what I would do is, for the first 3 weeks of each month I would cut them out entirely, and then at the last shopping session of each month, where I can see exactly what's left of my budget, I can just use that amount of money to buy as many snacks and energy drinks as my budget allows. And stock my pantry with these. That way I can make sure I stay within/ spot on my budget and I'll be able to see exactly the amount of snacks and sweets in my pantry, and know how long they need to last me until my next "end of month shopping". And if I constantly finish my snacks after 2 weeks, then I know I've been overspending because of snacks. If, however, I end up with hardly any snack budget at all - ie I have (almost) used up my monthly budget before buing any "wants", then I'll know I've been overspending on ingrdients for my actual meals (the "needs"). So I would have to look into these things, for example compare fresh produce prizes, and ask myself if I really need the brand-name milk or cereal.
Cecilia you can add a basketball or a jug with some stones in it so it floats around from the wind, keeping the water from freezing, that's what we do here in Wisconsin.
I want to do ice baths too! I’m very tolerant of cold, Norwegian blood 😂🤷🏼♀️ I hope Grim is feeling better! Thank you Cecila for being a beautiful, bright light in this world! You actually inspire me to be a better person and to live my best life! Love from Idaho, USA🫶🏼 Angel
That's the one thing I love so much about Swedish/Norway is the love of cardamom, I make Pita buns or cardamom buns, the kids called them pita or pida because they would tear the bread and didn't says peices, so that flavor is my childhood ❤❤
For the ice bath, try making a large bottle of very salty water to float in bin. It works in small scale to keep bird baths and water pans from completely freezing. I learned it from farmers. Not sure if sea water is salty enough. I use table salt. From a source, "20% mixture by weight Reduces freezing down to 0° F [-18° C]"
Fellow tall gal here (6ft tall!)the struggle of women's clothes being for tiny people is real. I LOVE the remoteness of Svalbard and the beautiful quiet calm, but the cold would absolutely kill me. I'd not make it. I do enjoy it through you!
I feel your budgeting pain! We spend a similar amount here (Sparwood BC Canada) and I have a few tips! 1. Have only one person buying groceries, the one who is least likely to impulse shop and can stick to a list. 2. Make a list! 3. List Needs and Wants. Then remove most Wants. 4. Prepackaged processed foods cost much more usually than diy versions. Snacks are usually very expensive. Make your own! 5. Frozen vegetables are usually much cheaper then fresh and are just as nutritious, often more! Hugs to Grim. It's hard when our furbabies have surgery or illness, so glad his anesthesia reaction had a good outcome, yikes! And super jealous of your ice bath! Well done with that find! Definitely look into the horse trough heater option or heat trace. Good luck!❤❤❤❤❤❤
As a vet tech it sounds like he wasn't intubated properly? Wow glad he's doing ok now, anesthesia is no joke and you need to absolutely trust your vet techs (animal nurses) because there's no anesthesiologist, the nurses do all that, or possibly vets in some places but usually always the techs. Thanks for a wonderful video!
You might be able to use a sump pump to pump water from the ocean to your ice water tank- it might work‼️❣️🥰💁🏻you can also place a special kind of rod heater into the water to keep it from freezing over completely….
My children had a pool made from an IBC bulk tank, minus the freezing part, plus a rolling frame with wheels. Our neighbors spent $60,000 to $80,000 on an inground pool. We spent $150 on ours. Win-win.
well you have ice cubes.... a pond deicer would work for your ice bath by keeping the top layer open enough to break through... I have not seen the next episode or any comments so I apologize if I am repeating the obvious.... so fun here at this channel ... now I am binge watching to get caught up!
I hope this isn't stepping over boundaries to say, but Christopher looks amazing lately! I remember watching your first videos and you both seem healthier and happier now!
I live in Pennsylvania. I feed a family of 5 with about $600 US a month, including 4 nights a month getting takeout. We’re talking tons of snacks and lots of fresh produce and meats. My snack order alone would fill your counters and island. Your $300 grocery haul fitting on the kitchen island blows my mind.
If you add a good amount of salt to the water in your ice bath tote it will lower the freezing temp of the water significantly. You could also buy a tiny 1 inch hose connection 2 stroke transfer pump and pump water from the ocean(salt water) then you will have water that will likely not freeze, you are not wasting and paying for fresh water, and you are not having to transport hundreds of liters of water every time you want to change the water out. Do not let that tote freeze solid it likely will crack the plastic.
You've truly piqued my curiosity in the health benefits of ice water plunging. 💦🧊🥶 Thank you!! I'm looking forward to now doing my research. So glad to see Grim doing so well following his surgery.🤗 It's such a difficult thing to see our fur buddies in any type of pain or distress .🦮😘 I got tickled at Christoffer when you asked if he'd ever take an ice bath. "No, never!!," he says with a strong emphasis on both no and never, lol. He's funny without even meaning to be so. The two of you compliment one another beautifully. As always, thank you for another entertaining, but yet informative video. May the three of you have a great week ahead, as Grim finishes up his convalescing. Much love and blessings abundant. 💞🙏
Why not use a pump to get ocean water in the tub? This water won't freeze quickly. And you can just let it flow out once you're done. Saves fresh water and a pomp will fill the tub more quickly. Love your channel
Grim look's happy & healthy! I love his little heart!!❤ TFS! I love your weekly vlogs & my dog's watch w/me. They bark at Grim.😂 My cat's were playing with the snow you were throwing over your shoulder, so my whole family enjoyed this week's episode!!😃🐈⬛🐕
On cattle farms here in Canada they put aeration pumps in the water troughs to keep them from freezing in the winter. The air bubbling vigorously to the surface agitates the water and keeps it moving thus inhibiting icing over. Once you have your tank properly insulated this might work for you. Kind regards. 🇨🇦
A good way to help so the water doesn’t freeze is putting a circulating electric pump in the tub.. the fact that the water is moving in circle will help lots! Keep the video coming! 👍 @ 17:28
I couldn’t think of anything more fulfilling than chilling in your cabin, with you 3, enjoying the chicken curry and great convos on your life in Svalbard xx
Groceries are more expensive everywhere it seems. Our family of four only does two trips to the grocery store a month and I always make a list, it really helps with staying on budget.
A livestock tank bubbler to keep motion in the water would stop it from freezing over, a livestock water heater with a cover would work too. It won’t heat the water too much.
I laughed out loud when you shovelled snow into the big shove unknowingly... score!! love how you did a close up on that lol... great episode as usual... I love every episode!
I always wondered where you guys fill your water tanks! Now I know. ....Love that you shared your height. I'm a 6'3" woman from San Francisco and have the same issues with clothes! Thanks for all the awesome content, it's always a treat to watch at the end of the week! 😘
My daughter is 6'3" and has to buy men's pants too. She can find some specialty women's pants online but has to pay so much for them. She can buy men's pants off the rack on sale.
Hi Cecilia! I'm writing from Vancouver, Canada. I randomly discovered your channel a while back and have to say it's a godsend! Your videos are so relaxing and are a welcome escape from a particularly difficult time in my life. Thank you so much for sharing a window to your beautiful life in Svalbard.
Camping near the airport, i got my water from the camping ground. Used to seek in for a cold shower when the camping attendant left for lunch. Ah the memories of s frugal traveller .
I was hoping you were going to ask Christoffer if he was going into the ice bath! Hysterical! He's like, "nope!" And that was so fascinating to understand how you get water for your cabin. And it's so cheap! Our water here in the States is so expensive! Give lots of love to Grim. He's such a sweet boy! Marianna💜💜
I've cut out expensive cans and bottled drinks and juices by brewing herbal fruit-flavorede teas. You can make a large jar, sweeten to taste and drink hot, warm, or room temperature over a couple of days at a very small cost.
I am from Finland and I do ice water swimming every day. I recommend you get yourself some neoprene socks and gloves to make the bath more enjoyable. The water will freeze in cold weather, we use a circulating pump to prevent that and I would use also an insulating lid over the tub, also to protect it from dirt, leaves etc if you have those. Pumping the water from the sea could also be an option, I believe the salt water would have even more benefits.
what about pumping in the ocean water? throw a long hose in and get a pump machine. that way the sea water won’t freeze also. and you can change it more.

Putting a wooden decorative shield around the water container will make it look nicer. just like a lamp with a lampshade looks better than a naked incandescent bulb hanging on a string attached to the ceiling.
Hope Grim feels 100% better soon. Cecilia your name should be 'Wonder Woman' You accomplish so much!
🧡🧡🧡
I agree. And that sweater is lovely❤
I hope Grim feels better soon! How cool that big movies are made around Svalbard.
So nice to see Christopher cooking!
Thank you so much! 🧡
little advice for the grocery budget situation: It looks to me like (almost) all the things you listed as a "want, not a need" are things that will keep for a few weeks, a month.
I hope Grim feels better soon! Inflation seems to be affecting grocery prices everywhere.
A cold, fast moving wind always makes it colder on an already cold day
Extra hugs to Grim for a quick recovery❤
Cecilia you can add a basketball or a jug with some stones in it so it floats around from the wind, keeping the water from freezing, that's what we do here in Wisconsin.
I want to do ice baths too! I’m very tolerant of cold, Norwegian blood 😂🤷🏼♀️
I hope Grim is feeling better! Thank you Cecila for being a beautiful, bright light in this world! You actually inspire me to be a better person and to live my best life!
Love from Idaho, USA🫶🏼
Angel
Idaho here, too!
That's the one thing I love so much about Swedish/Norway is the love of cardamom, I make Pita buns or cardamom buns, the kids called them pita or pida because they would tear the bread and didn't says peices, so that flavor is my childhood ❤❤
Hope Grim recovers fast!
Thanks Cecilia I enjoy your videos so much ❤
Love from Australia
Thank you so much! ✨
Pump air or water 😊through the water in the tub. Moving water won’t freeze
Aw Grimmmy. We love y’all! Always looking forward to seeing Sunday videos! Xo hugs to all three of you!
You have such high living standards being so remote, big respect!
I just love watching you two! Really enjoy when Christoffer is cooking. ❤ love to you Christoffer Grim and village residents ❤️
You might be able to use a sump pump to pump water from the ocean to your ice water tank- it might work‼️❣️🥰💁🏻you can also place a special kind of rod heater into the water to keep it from freezing over completely….
oh poor grimm, hope he is better soon. thank you for the cooking segment & good luck with the ice bath!
I hope so too! ♡
My children had a pool made from an IBC bulk tank, minus the freezing part, plus a rolling frame with wheels.
Our neighbors spent $60,000 to $80,000 on an inground pool. We spent $150 on ours. Win-win.
Great video! Wishing Grim well during his teeth surgeries 😊❤
Thank you! 🧡
well you have ice cubes.... a pond deicer would work for your ice bath by keeping the top layer open enough to break through... I have not seen the next episode or any comments so I apologize if I am repeating the obvious.... so fun here at this channel ... now I am binge watching to get caught up!
How is possible to live somewhere so cold but have the COZIEST living space ever ☺️
Hello Cecilia Yes of course you are working up a sweat and getting warm after all that energetic snow shoveling.
Get well soon, Grim !
They could buy a stock tank heater for a small amount. They keep the water about 40F and run on 110 electricity.
@@q-man762 Yes, unless 40F is too warm for her ice bath! Not my cup of tea.
You never fail to deliver to us that watch your channel a informative and interesting video. Thanks for taking the time to make this for us to watch.
So nice of you 🙏
@@CeciliaBlomdahl no problem ma'am you are coming along great with your channel.
Feel better sweet Grim. Holy cow, filming Mission Impossible there, sweet! Congratulations on getting the cold plunge tub, that’s going to be incredible for you!
❤
Thankful Grim is doing ok. Hope his healing is going better. Good video, thank you for sharing.
So love Grim happy he's doing well, your videos are so loved and the interaction with you and Christopher is so awesome ❤❤
You are so kind 🧡
A livestock tank bubbler to keep motion in the water would stop it from freezing over, a livestock water heater with a cover would work too. It won’t heat the water too much.
A ice bath is a splendid addition! From all I’ve read, it’s incredible for your health and energy level. Enjoy! 😊
Cecilia: This is a million dollar question. Would you ever take an ice bath?
Christoffer: NO.....Never. 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Ah but his contribution to the lifestyle is priceless!!!
😂
Camping near the airport, i got my water from the camping ground. Used to seek in for a cold shower when the camping attendant left for lunch. Ah the memories of s frugal traveller .
I was hoping you were going to ask Christoffer if he was going into the ice bath! Hysterical! He's like, "nope!"
And that was so fascinating to understand how you get water for your cabin. And it's so cheap! Our water here in the States is so expensive!
Give lots of love to Grim. He's such a sweet boy!
Marianna💜💜
Hahah his no was FAST 🤣 Thank you Marianna! 🧡
I would go in the ice bath
I've cut out expensive cans and bottled drinks and juices by brewing herbal fruit-flavorede teas. You can make a large jar, sweeten to taste and drink hot, warm, or room temperature over a couple of days at a very small cost.
Not only I do love your vlogs but I certainly adore your life in Svalbard. Hugs from Milan
Oh thank you! 😍
Hugs to Grim, poor little man. hope he feels better soon. Love watching your videos it looks awesome there. Greetings from the UK.
what about pumping in the ocean water? throw a long hose in and get a pump machine. that way the sea water won’t freeze also. and you can change it more.
