    Enjoyed the review Bruce you had me in tears with your hysterical response to you thinking you had missed your exit, and being up the creek with no paddle, that would have been my response, that's why I was so amused. For that reason I don't think my old heart would stand such stress. So not for me till they do 200 + miles with a charge station on every street corner. Thank you.

    Thanks Bruce great video. I like the idea of an electric scooter but not at that price. I ride a Honda Forza 350, which averages over 84mpg and which has a top speed of over 85mph and can cruise easily at 70mph+ on the motorway, making it great as a commuter but with the added advantage of being perfectly capable ( and comfortable) for long distance work. I brought it new in August last year and its now done over 12,500 miles including several longer tours. I believe it currently retails for £5699, so you could buy an awful lot of petrol for the money you save over the BMW. You need to try some of the maxi scoots like your buddy TMF. Quite a lot of us older bikers end up on them as the arthritis kicks in and other aches and pains make their presence felt - they keep us on two wheels - which has to be a good thing, when the weight of a bike and difficulty in getting your leg over some bikes these days starts to take effect!!

    • @DanTube2010

      I think they purposely limit the top speed of this BMW because the effect of wind resistance increases exponentially with speed and kills the battery range.

    We use the previous version at work, the longer range version which gives 120 mile range, top speed of 96mph, apparently 😉, they are fun to ride, comfortable, usual bmw refinements, they have eco, road and sport mode, Eco is pants. Yes it corners well but you do have to push the final lean on sharper corners. In the winter you'll get about 75 miles in road mode. I ride a BMW F800ST on my commute and the CE04 matches that for acceleration easily.
    We've had then for four years now and we have had no issues or problems with them. One point is they are very heavy and we've dropped then twice, and you'll need help getting them back up!

    I imagine these would be popular in California with the eco crowd with plenty of money to spend and want to be early adopters, not so much in the UK price/range/practically wise etc. The Yamaha XMax 300cc scooter is a far better deal, over half the price, 75mpg, 13L tank, will do 80+ mph, huge under seat storage for two helmets/groceries/work laptop etc. I was curious about this BMW scooter for commuting so enjoyed seeing this video pop up in my feed, unfortunately it doesn’t make sense yet with price/range/storage, hopefully it gets better.

    Liked the vid Bruce but yes you should have taken it round the areas it's designed for in Towns and Cities. Horses for courses as they say, if you use it to commute to work and can charge there the cubby under the seat would probably be fine too, depending on size. My NC750X should fit a helmet in its cubby, not my adventure one no, mates open face with a small head, yes😁 As a BMW it's going to be expensive, there are countless electric scooters out there now cheaper with a similar range, but yes you do get the expertise and quality of the big German group. Thanks for giving it a go though👍

    There are companies already making battery packs to fit the storage compartment extending the range by double plus but they are not to market yet sorting the connections out and it will be removable for remote charging. This will change its nature considerably making it more worth a look. Different configurations are being tested currently but not market ready

    Hi Bruce, we’re you testing the full power version? I test rode one about a month ago as I was considering replacing my C EVOLUTION. It was definitely quicker than the one you tested. I got just over 80mph out of he (displayed) and though it was a match for my C evolution on acceleration. Decided not to upgrade as I would have to find a big chunk of cash, the range is less and it is no where near as comfortable. Your welcome to compare it with my C Evo if you are ever up Chester way.

    2. Range Panic aside when you eased off it did sip the energy much less, given that you were riding the scoot well outside its designed commuter environment (keenly) it appeared to handle well And you made it back! ;D

If you get it in the white with the yellow details and screen panels it gives me big Mirror's Edge vibes, which will mean nothing for anyone over 40 but still. However, does it give me anything I'd want over say the faster of the two electric Vespas, the 70km/h one, at £6300, or even the techy Silence S01 with it's removable battery unit at £4995 (if I was happy with the 30mph limit).. not sure. One gripe I have with this bike is the 'storage' under the seat situation. It's claimed to be large enough to store a helmet but then it's where the charging cables go. So, why not have a separate storage area JUST for the cables? I use an electric bicycle to go to work so I'm not against electric vehicles.

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they’re working off the assumption that when you’re off the bike and want to store your lid, you’re going to be charging the bike up using the cables, so the space will be empty and ready for the lid.

    • @Desmo904
      @Desmo904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@teapotone Possibly. But if they routed the cabling around under the seat (outside) and plugged it into a lockable socket it wouldn't take up any storage space. Just a question of packaging.

    I think the best completion for electric scooters at the moment is a Honda Supercub C125 ( or similar ) I bought one S/H with 2,500 miles on it ,and about £700 worth of extras for £2,550. It does 180 mpg. That's 40mpl ( probably more if you ride it carefully ) It'll do 60mph, maybe a bit more, with me on it, ( nearly 13 stone )
    I'm not too sure how much it costs to charge an electric scooter, but I bet it's not much less to run than the Supercub.

    • @1960ARC
      @1960ARC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I considered the super cube, it's s lovely looking scooter. I chose the SH125i on spec. Front and back abs, traction control, large wheels and the two that mattered the most as I do deliveries, range and storage.
      It's also keyless and the stop start is amazing.
      What's your range on a tank?

    • @Jaffa1951
      @Jaffa1951 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1960ARC I agree about the storage. It's pretty useless on the Cub. I do have a rack fitted where the step-through is, which is very useful, plus I've ordered a big top box for it, which is big enough to hold 2 helmets. The tank only holds 3.7 litres, but out of that, I've had 150 miles. when I filled it up it still had about half a litre in the tank, which is about 20 miles. I thought that a bit tight so usually fill it up at 140 miles.
      Further news on the MPG subject - I filled it up yesterday ( always brimmed ) and I'd achieved 208 mpg using E5 petrol. I was amazed and double checked my calculations.
      I've got other bikes, so don't ride the SuperCub all the time, and tend to use it for the more mundane stuff, but with the price of fuel, possibly, reaching £2 per litre soon, it's certainly paying for itself.

    • @1960ARC
      @1960ARC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jaffa1951 yep, that state sure are making us suffer with this fuel hike. I think the cub is awesome looking. I've done 200 miles on E10 and about half a litre left in the tank. I've not tried to extend the range by careful driving as I tend to be doing deliveries when I'm riding.

    This is a great video. I can't say I like battery operated bikes, as this is what they are. The technology is toxic.
    I ride a Honda SH125i that I've had just over a year. Done a little over 20,000 miles. I get over 200 miles on a tank of fuel and it does around 130 mpg.
    With its large screen has a top speed of 68 mph.
    Replaced the back tyre at 9000 miles, just about to get both front and back done.
    Belt is good for 16000 miles.
    It has, with its large screen pretty good weather protection.
    It's important to polish the screen or you find out it's made of rain glue!
    I wonder how much distance you lose by heating your arse and hands lol?

    Hi Bruce, question, how much does it cost to charge? At that price what about a Sinnis or Super Cub?

    • @teapotone
      @teapotone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you charge at a public charging pod, it’ll be about £2-£4 for a full charge, or at home via the mains AC then it’ll be under £2

      Not financially viable either to buy or indeed charge… Nothing more than a gimmick by BMW. Honda Forza or Yamaha XMax are a fraction of the price and cheaper to run. Just my view I know but I reckon sales figures will back me up here…

    I am not sure why there's such a big push for electric bikes. For cars I understand, but they are inherently different kinds of vehicles. The problem with bikes, is being able to fit a large enough battery pack into the bike (and secondary not compromise the weight too much).
    With current battery storage technology it is just not feasible to get a decent range out of them. Never mind that the battery cost skyrocket as energy density goes up, hence the high price. They just are not competitive.

    • @Durkan34
      @Durkan34 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d argue the opposite. Bikes make far more sense as an electric vehicle. Light weight means you don’t need as much power or battery capacity.
      The problem technologically isn’t range it’s charge speed. My Ducati scrambler only has a range of 120 miles ish but you can "recharge" it in 5 -10 mins at a petrol station.
      If you could get 100 miles range in say 15-20 mins I think you'd have it cracked.

    • @tHaH4x0r
      @tHaH4x0r 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Durkan34 I think you totally misunderstood my point. Yes, I definitely agree that bikes make sense for electric vehicles. BUT, the increase in weight of a battery versus gasoline is much more noticeable and of impact as compared to a car. Plus you just dont have the space.
      And no, charge speed is not the technological problem. The problem is again battery technology, as the charge speed is inherently limited by the equivalent series resistance of the batteries. At higher charge rates, these have (linearly) higher losses and produce heat, which is bad for the battery. You CAN charge them much faster, but that comes at much higher risk and severely decreased battery pack life time. A 'recharge time' of 10 minutes at a petrol station is quite long, most people spend maybe 5 mins at most. Thats definitely not attainable. That would mean charge currents one order of magnitude larger than now. (resistive) Power dissipation scales quadratically, which would mean two orders of magnitude higher losses (and thus heat output).
      I don't think you would be able to push the charge time even to 15 minutes, as the current being pushed through batteries now is already extremely high. That implies that the only reasonable way to extent range with current technology is to increase battery capacity, which comes at the cost of weight and volume.
      edit: To demonstrate my point, this specific BMW charges with 6.9 kW quick charge. That would mean to attain 0-80% charge in 15 mins, you would require 30kW charging. That is the equivalance of about 30 clothes dryers operating at the same time!!
      Similarly in this example, the losses and heat output would go up by a factor of 18.5x. Getting rid of this at such a rate is practically impossible.
      Honestly, I think the current fast charging currents are already pushing the battery quite far. It doesn't come 'free of charge', as you will definitely wear down your battery much faster.

    • @Durkan34
      @Durkan34 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think we’re dancing around the same handbag.
      You say “it’s not a technological problem” and then defined the problem.
      I agree it’s not just a matter of whacking more current in the current battery technology.
      I’m saying we need a battery/ charger technology that allows you to charge a modest sized battery very quickly.

    80 miles range? You mentioned 76% and 45 miles - that makes about 59 miles total by my back of the packet numbers.
    So in reality even if you're kind you're going to be looking for a charger at 50 miles.
    Thats before degredation, cold weather and wet roads take their bit out aswell.
    I'm sorry but if I'm paying that kind of money for a bike I want it to be able to do more than pop to the shops and back before needing a very long, drawn out, forced stop.
    Why oh why do they not make these things with range extenders?
