One of THE best original action films ever. The pacing is impeccable and provides a constant sense of urgency and excitement. So underrated. Jan De Bont should still be making high-budget movies!!
The first time when i watched Speed when i was 7 years of age, i was hooked. I kept playing it via vhs over and over again. Till i believed i thought i was Jack. I imagined being him each time im in an elevator, tryna help ppl stucked in the lift. Even especially on bus rides. I’d look and stare into the floor of the bus, imagining opening up the access panel and get into action. Replaying the scenes and the soundtrack in my head all at the same time thinking im Jack. All i ever wanted to be growing up was to be like Jack. A fearless, smart, quick thinking, kind and at the same time romantic guy. Now im 33, i still wanna be like Jack. Sadly, they dont make incredible films like this anymore.
That fucking bus scene put me on so fucking tension and stress back then, it was such a rollerscoaster of emotions that i was relieved when the hostages finally got out. people don't make movies like this anymore. im so glad i got to experience the 90's and their awesome movies. :')
apparenlty hollwood thinks that action movies today have to have superheroes and transformers in them in order to be successful which is not true. dont get me wrong those types of movies have a place in the film industry, but i wish they also made movies like speed, simple plot simple setting, with good performances, and a good villan. this movie has it all and it did not need a transformer/ superhero to become successfull.
The problem is that kind of places and life doesnt exist anymore . Today is all fake, a tecnological Dream, too many 'smart' things so this kind of action , only Cars, run ect is not real.....in Speed he used only a old phone , no tecnology only real man action
The best part about the 80's and 90's action movies was the concept of the "Everyman" hero. The idea of the Everyman hero is it's just an average joe character with no distinct heroic characteristics. It makes the hero character feel more relatable. Movies like Die Hard and Speed both have characters that fall into that everyman category. John Mcclane is just a cop from NY that got trapped in a survival situation. Some of the things he does are a little unbelievable, but within the realm of suspension of disbelief. I don't think your average every day cop would jump into an elevator shaft and use the strap of a submachine gun to climb down it and reach an air duct on the far side of the shaft. But other than that, it's clear that the whole ordeal was a massive struggle. John looks like he's ready to check the fuck out halfway through the movie. In Speed, Jack is one of many working for the bomb squad. His only "heroic" characteristics is he's kinda off the chain, and does things on his own. Other than that, he's just a guy doing his job. However, even these characters are not perfect examples of the everyman. John Mcclane had years of experience as a street cop under his belt. Not sure about Jack, but if you're in the bomb squad, you're making a committment that you might not even be going home in a body bag, and you'll definitely have a closed casket funeral. But these are still relatable characters because they are just doing their job. I'd say the perfect example of the Everyman hero is in a very underrated and unpopular movie called Breakdown, with Kurt Russel. His character in that movie is literally just a random guy. He has no experience in fighting people or negotiating with kidnappers. Yet, he finds his kidnapped wife and unravels an entire kidnapping ring in the middle of bumfuck America. He doesn't do anything crazy action like or over the top for his character. Everything he does feels like something anybody might do if they were in his shoes. The problem these days is the Everyman hero doesn't exist anymore. Hero characters are written to have some kind of purpose or destiny that puts them in their situation. This kind of character is not very relatable, no matter how well written every other aspect of them is. The average viewer can't relate to a literal superhero like Thor, because the average viewer isn't a God from Valhalla. The average viewer can't relate to a hero like Captain America, because they aren't a genetically altered supersoldier. This is the only reason I really like Iron Man. The first one is awesome. Tony Stark is a believable and relatable hero. There's nothing spectacular about him other than he's a really smart dude who built a suit of power armor to escape a cave in the middle East. He realized he could do a lot more with it. So he made it better, and used it to help people. Characters like John Mcclane, Jack Traven, and even Tony Stark are relatable, because they're just dudes doing their job. The best kind of character is one that feels grounded in reality, and is therefore a character the average viewer can relate to on some level. The Everyman needs to be revived. Action movies these days suck. They don't have the same charm or flair of the 80's and 90's.

2/3 better than the last third. I have a way to make that film perfect. Instead of blowing Jeff character up he should been the one finding out where the villain was and taken him in just after Keanu and Bullock got of the bus. raiding his whereabouts. Those two storylines happening simultaneously intercutting.
@@artofsam Nice! Yeah it feels like two endings in a way because the movie sets up the plot around the bus so when that is finished the movie feels done. They even have that kiss which feels like a nice button on the story. But BTW the villain is still out there. You could even build up more suspense if you intercut between Jeff trying to find the villain whose about to blow up the bus and Keanu trying to get of the bus. I would have got rid of the whole sequence on the train. You could rather have that as a sequel with him surviving and coming back. Speed 2: Unstoppable :P
@@movieace1295 the screenwriters wanted jack traven more committed to the bus and the action than if a hero could get HIM out of it. Jack is the hero. screenwriting 101 and killing off jeff = up the stakes.
@@BluffCreekStudio you can raise the stakes in different ways. Keanu would still be the hero, HE is saving all on the bus. Jeff just takes the villain after Keau has saved them.
