Just did a compression test on my VR6. It's from a 97 golf, but im assuming since its dual chain it was actually swapped from an OBD1 car at some point... Engine has 190k written on it assuming it may have over 200k miles on it. Every cylinder was +/- a few psi from 140! Amazing...

+CJBMAGGOT94 it must be a swapped OBD1, should be easy to tell from the serial number. That's fantastic! It must have been well looked after. I should redo mine, it has been a few years since I did it. Cheers!

My 2004 GTI 2.8L 24v VR6, engine code BDF, is somewhat different from the engine in this video but there are similarities. I'd like to better understand the VR6's common failure points that result in compression that's out of limits. If a compression test fails, what repairs can be made with the VR6 specifically to bring it back within limits? Some may suggest using high milage oil but I view this as treating a symptom but avoiding the root cause of the problem. I'm interested in addressing the root cause. I suppose piston rings are the obvious first issue often pointed to. However, is this really a common problem with the VR6 if properly serviced at recommended intervals? Could it be excessive wear on the timing chain, camshaft lifters, or spark plug seals? Again, I understand all of these could be problem areas on many engine but what are the specifically known failure points for compression on the VR6 that are most common? Thanks for making this video and for all with experience on this engine who can provide some feedback to my comment. Greatly appreciated..

I couldn't tell you, it should be listed in the service manual which I don't have access to.
