- Are you taking classes online? Do you need help figuring out Distance Learning? Socratica Friends, we’re here to help. You don’t have to be in a classroom to be a Great Student. But there are some important differences about the best ways to study for Online Courses.
One big difference is that you are on your own to manage your time. Don’t try to cram all your online courses in one day! We’ll give you some practical advice about how to break up your study time. Another difference in online learning is how you will be participating. Discussion forums are the most common way you will be required to participate for your online classes, but some instructors arrange for meetings with Google Hangouts, Skype, or Zoom. Be prepared if this is the case with a webcam. You can use your phone camera in a pinch.
Find a quiet place in your house to claim as your special study spot. This will help you take your online classes seriously. Every time you sit down in your study spot, you’ll be ready to work. We have a video to help you get your desk organized: bit.ly/Organize...

Amazing. I’m studying CS in OCW MIT, but I have no time frame, I just want to learn. Really learn. So I found myself watching other videos that help me understand the topic that I’m learning. Take more time, but I’m really understanding. Looking at it with the First Principles lens! :)

All of this is so true. I did a one year Post Grad Certificate, a first year of a MSc and the time commitment was huge : after a long day at work a busy evening to follow. I would start a week on a Thursday, have to have a forum post done by the Sunday (well written etc) and I had to log in each day after and put a retort or response to a fellow student (3 to 5 high quality responses to enhance and further the discussion). On top of that was individual assignments. On top of that was group work with people all around the world - so time differences had to be considered too. My social life was severely affected and I had to work on holidays (including no breaks at Christmas). Hope this helps.

@@Socratica Also(!) The lecturers can really vary in their behaviour. Some were super hard, setting quite stressful requirements (cover 8 topics in 500 words - then told "not enough detail); others could be too easy, awarding straight As, only to have my work re-graded by the board at a later date 🤷♂️😒
Btw, for those of you who don't know, you can audit quality online courses on platforms like edx, coursera, udacity, etc.
That is how I do it all the time 😅.

What I did is I made a Spreadsheet of all MOOCs I'm going to take in next two years approx. Then rearranged them according to their prerequisites and divided them into modules. Also I divided into 4 paths like Computer Science, Maths, Miscellaneous, etc and started devoting about 30 - 60 minutes a day to each. There's also a 5th path for foreign languages which takes about 15 minutes a day and can be squeezed at any time slot.

I am on verge of crying , we were supposed to have exam in may but yesterday our uni send a email to all students that now it will be in April one month before it was supposed, and we haven't learn anything yet and our uni won't upload online content and from today we are in lockdown like what is going on !

Our exams might not even happen, and we'll just get the grades predicted at the start of the year. Even though half of our course in Maths and Physics hasn't even been taught including my second favourite topic in Physics (waves).

I prefer online course over University Courses. I can watch at 2 times the speed. My brain doesn't go into idle mode. Would like to get a few advanced physics lectures for recap. E.q. QCD. But doesn't found anything good yet.

I have no problems with online studying, the only issue is the internet connection in my area...very inconsistent.
Same situation in my case, My college is giving online lectures, but the network issue is disturbing the resolution and voice

Hi socratica! Hope that u are well.. Actually I'm not satisfied with online learning and I don't think that this e_learning will help me to acheive my goals... Coz sometimes I don't wanna take class that day.. And I join class but I don't listen to my teacher and I can't focus on that lecture.. and so tha then I miss my most important lecture.. 😕😕

We're so sorry to hear you're having a hard time. We know so many people are. Back in college, when a class wasn't that great for us, it meant that we had to rely on ourselves to find a way to get something out of every lecture. So one thing we tried was reading ahead a little - look at the topics in the textbook that are coming up, and write questions for ourselves that we wanted to get answered. If they weren't brought up in lecture, we would ask that question. Give it a shot and HANG IN THERE!! 💜🦉
