When the Terminator says "I know now why you cry, but it's something that I could never do" I think that it symbolizes not only that the Terminator has learned the value of human life but also that maybe the Terminator wishes that it could be human itself and not just a machine.
Remember the T2 live action show from Universal Studios? Some say the film segments of that show, which were directed by Cameron and starred all the main players of T2, is the true spiritual successor of T2. Having seen that while it lasted I have to agree. It was amazing they got back the entire crew to film a 12 minute segment for an amusement park attraction, and it was awesome!
@@karelbilek9121 it was a live show you could watch at Universal Studios the theme park with actors and pyrotechnics. I probably haven’t seen it in 10 years so I don’t remember exactly how it went. You can probably find a video of someone recording it
I could watch and listen to James review a blank canvas. I love your reviews! Maybe it's because you're so passionate about film, but they're so entertaining to me. Keep it up!
I disagree about Sara's arc in T2. I thought the obvious point was that she was becoming increasingly cold, mechanistic and unconcerned with human life, something she only realizes when John stops her from murdering Miles Dyson. For a moment, Sara WAS a Terminator herself. This process is directly contrasted against scenes of the T-800 learning from John how to be and act more human. Speaking of T3, even though I also stick up for it being a really fun movie, it's a massive regression in almost every respect.
I literally searched "Terminator Cinemassacre" a few hours ago to see if you had any related content, and then this gets uploaded out of the blue. Fate.
Reason Terminator 2, Aliens, Abyss have so much value and are so rewatchable is due to the amount of detail and production Cameron puts into his projects all besides Piranha 2 The Spawning.
Terminator: awesome movie. Terminator 2: arguably even better. Terminator 3: average action movie. Terminator Salvation: cool premise, but faulty realization and got spoiled by the trailers. Terminator Genisys: complete mess.

Terminator 2's special effects were done the right way. Cameron built a good story and interesting characters around the special effects instead of wrapping special effects around a turd. Unfortunately, he went the opposite direction with Avatar.
AquaDump Entertainment Avatar had a good storyline I thought that movie was shit and never bothered to watch it but I was wrong it's a really good movie.
T2 imo is the greatest Sci Fi movie of all time. The cast. The practical effects. The story. The action. Literal perfection. The cinematography is underrated too.
This made me realise that James never ever talked about The Matrix, arguably the political sci-fi thriller of the new generation. What is James' opinion of the Matrix?
Salvation, "I won't say too much, coz I don't want to spoil it" then shows Sam Washington's face is part machine, a few years late but found that funny.
As far as the R rating goes a lot of kids still watch those movies when I was little. I got to watch Terminator 2 and RoboCop at 4 years old and I freaking loved them
Terminator: "Great" Terminator 2: "Awesome." Terminator 3: "Good but still entertaining." Terminator Salvation: "Tried to enjoy it, it's not for me, I hated it." Terminator 5: "Was good, but a mess."
The Terminator was more like a sci-fi thriller has a little bit of horror slasher elements embedded within. T2 is definitely when the series became more action oriented.
There's a band called Wolfies Just Fine that has a concept album where all the songs revolve around movie sequels. The Terminator 2 song is called Todd and Janelle
The best part of T3 was the ending, after watching the movies over an over for years that bittersweet ending when John becomes leader of the resistance and the nukes start to fall
It's interesting to see his reaction to one of the films that started the modern trend of "soft reboots" loaded with action scenes and rehashed concepts from the series' original runs.
The Gaming Paladin but it is a Terminator movie. Compared to everything that came before it, it's not just inferior. It's not bad. But it's generic to something that was interesting
I will say t2 will always be one of the most timeless movies ever. Just listen to the sound fx of the lasers and the cgi is still believable look because it's used for things that don't exist yet so it isn't replacing anything that we've seen yet. Perfect scifi film
I saw T2 in the theatre recently.... And the scene where the shrink told Sarah her son was missing and showed her the photos.... The shrink says "I know you know who this guy is".... And as an adult, I almost laughed because it suddenly clicked that "I've been telling all you assholes for a decade and NOW you ask me?" should have been her response.
I agree with much of what was said, i too think the Salvation was kind of interesting, different and also was its own thing. And I think, arnold or not. The Genisys was the weakest.
I'd be interested to see if your opinion on T3 has changed since originally making this review. I remember hating it when I saw it in the theaters, but seeing it again now, it's much worse than I remembered.
Bara FTW I mostly hate it because of how much it undermines the ending to T2. They prevented judgement day, the end. That's why most of us pretend the series ended there.
Finally somebody who shares my visions of T3. I actually like it very much. The story connects well with the franchise and explains important points. The action is great and Schwarzenegger is as awesome as ever. Yeah, the dialogues are bad and the characters are poorly executed, but in my opinion it stands on its own and is entertaining. T4 on the other hand is awful... nothing happens the whole movie, the characters and the story are a mess and it doesn't add in any way to the franchise. For me T2 >> T1 > T3 = T5 >>>>>>> T4
Just watching this now, so sorry for the late comment, but I have a wee nit-pick with the review of T3; The T-X wasn't sent back to assassinate John Connor. Skynet had lost all trace of Connor (which is explained in the movie), so the T-X was sent back to take out the people who would become his most trusted allies during the future war. It's only by accident that she comes across John Connor... then it rehashes the second the movie. I liked T3 overall though. Getting glimpses of what will become the Hunter Killers and Flying Hunter Killers, actually seeing Skynet being switched on and becoming self-aware, then having the balls to actually end the film on the destruction of the world.
I actually really enjoyed the TV series. Skynet was in full-on "Fuck It" mode and keeps sending terminators back. But I do understand why a lot of people didn't like it. It was a drastic departure from the movies, and was more a character analysis series than an action or thriller series.

apparently a sequel for the Terminator 2 timeline is in production, so there's that. And when I say Terminator 2 timeline, I mean they're excluding what happened in the third movie.
I think Salvation is underrated. It’s not the best, but I would have loved to see that trilogy. Well made, respect to the OG and was set in the future war. Loved it

Good reviews, though you are wrong about a part of T2 [that should have been how T3 happened but they missed/ignored it too.] Not "all traces" of the terminators were destroyed. The Good Arnold lost an arm during his fight with the t-1000 in the foundry and that was never shown to be melted, it could still be recovered. Also, the S.M.Sterling books mention a fairly obvious idea... that Cyberdyne would have had an offsite data storage facility to backup it's most important data. It's my hope that the new James Cameron Terminator film uses these [and even better, adapts the book Trilogy that continues from where his films left off.]

The original 2 movies can be topped. Key word "Can" but it has to be #1 directed by James Cameron, #2, James has to still be into it with his heart and soul and original ideas and #3 it has to be the final conclusion and takes place during the actual war hopefully being 2 - 2 and a half hours long, cus it'll be worth it. But even all that does not guarantee a good T movie, but it definately helps... ALOT!!!
Would be cool if he reviewed the TV series they weren't bad but they did make T3 storyline moot. If you haven't watched it James, give it a shot. Besides Summer Glau is in it :)
This is definitely a quick blinking you'll miss it shot but when the T1000 is chasing them on the bridge and he smashes them up against the rail? Arnold says this is the vehicle's top speed and if you look real closely it's not going above 65 miles per hour and I love that quick shot because it's pretty much you saying that he still a robot because Sarah Connor told him to keep it underneath 65 we don't want to be pulled over
Making Terminator 3, I think that they new that there is no way anyone could ever beat Terminator 2. Usually people knowing they will loose will perform less than they would if they thought they could make it better. Perhaps that mindset made Terminator 3 what it is today. But that's not to say its still a watchable movie. Although, it is one of the weaker ones. Terminator 4 is a bit confusing and for the most parts a bit dull. And I'm gonna go against the crowd and say that Terminator Genisys Is fucking awesome. I love that movie and firmly puts it in third place on my Terminator list.
Excellent review as always, James. Though I find it funny that you refer to the Terminator as an "it" rather than as a "him". I know he's a robot. But he's still a character nevertheless. So I usually refer to the Terminator as a "him".

100% agreed
It makes no sense and it's so frustrating
I hate it, too. Gives me Plumbers Don't Wear Ties vibes.
As a teacher, I like to focus a lot on Arnold.
The reason why we got the third movie because Arnold had his arm crushed in the second one by a machine while battling the T-1000
yet they didnt explain that, instead it was like "Skynet still wins, get your ass to the shelter!"
Well, that's the in-world reason, the actual reason is money.

ALOT!!!
Besides never haven a sequel stepping up to 1 and 2 I think salvation was the best follow up. Shane's camera and lighting work was outstanding.
I think Arnold only needs to study a little harder to achieve his full potential as an excellent student.
Terminator and part two.....two of the best sci fi movies to ever come out. James Cameron is a genius.
She has learned many new words through the class readings and our lessons.
Would be cool if he reviewed the TV series they weren't bad but they did make T3 storyline moot. If you haven't watched it James, give it a shot. Besides Summer Glau is in it :)
She loves to participate when she knows the answer.
I can agree t3 was still better then terminator salvation, that one just sucks. A lot like a lot
Please do another Cinemassacre's Monster Madness
"He takes the place-the place of a father he never had."
I always had a feeling the second one feels like wellw ritten family movie.
That's why I loved it as a kid and now.
He seems to learn quickly from the corrections I make to his written work, as long as he pays attention to them.
This is definitely a quick blinking you'll miss it shot but when the T1000 is chasing them on the bridge and he smashes them up against the rail? Arnold says this is the vehicle's top speed and if you look real closely it's not going above 65 miles per hour and I love that quick shot because it's pretty much you saying that he still a robot because Sarah Connor told him to keep it underneath 65 we don't want to be pulled over
Terminator 2, best of all the films.
More of a T1 guy myself.
Ok, the 3rd one was abysmal in my opinion for many reasons. But I actually liked the 4th :D
In order of favorite to least, 2, 1, Salvation, 3/Genesys
Making Terminator 3, I think that they new that there is no way anyone could ever beat Terminator 2. Usually people knowing they will loose will perform less than they would if they thought they could make it better. Perhaps that mindset made Terminator 3 what it is today. But that's not to say its still a watchable movie. Although, it is one of the weaker ones. Terminator 4 is a bit confusing and for the most parts a bit dull. And I'm gonna go against the crowd and say that Terminator Genisys Is fucking awesome. I love that movie and firmly puts it in third place on my Terminator list.
Believe it or not I saw Terminator 2 in the theaters back in 1991 when i was about 5-6 years old. I am 31 now, and will never forget.
Sweet! It would be awesome if you did a full review of Genesys!
Excellent review as always, James. Though I find it funny that you refer to the Terminator as an "it" rather than as a "him". I know he's a robot. But he's still a character nevertheless. So I usually refer to the Terminator as a "him".
