I am also knitting a Marie Wallin inspired self-designed colorwork sweater. It is pullover, so I don't have to steek it. I can relate to having the short torso problem. Are your sleeves longer than the body of most of your sweaters like mine? I would knit the collar, so that you will know what it will hang like with the weight of the whole sweater. That will affect your sleeve length, too. I would also pick up and knit the sleeves down. It would only be upside down stitches by half a stitch. The following stitch forms the other leg of each V. I am knitting mine with fingering yarn, and have pulled out the sleeves multiple times. I'm trying to get the circumference of the sleeve right. My colorwork was originally 21-stitch repeats, while the lower colorwork motifs are 24-stitch repeats. If I had known that the Doodle Directory designs were all on 24-stitch repeats, I would have designed mine as 24-stitch repeats so I wouldn't have to change the total number of stitches to transition from my designs to Doodle designs. I love the colors in your Celeste sweater! It will be fabulous!
I love watching your podcasts ,you are not only very talented and beautiful ,but you know how to combine the colors in the most amazing way, probably due to your background in arts.
Absolutely agree! I haven't done separate sleeves for YEARS! I regard the pattern as a guide rather than the Bible verses. It also makes it easier to get the perfect sleeve length as you can try on the whole garment rather than guessing how the sleeve cap will fit.
Just met up with your youtube by chance. Absolutely stunningly gorgeous colorwork on your sweater!! I love 💕 the soft feel of the yarns, well, it looks super soft - I cant feel it - it’s obvious you’re in love with your knitting, it’s the only way to go. I’ll have to check back in with you, cuz you’re contageous, much admiration
Totally okay to pick up and knit down - like you said just like a button band. Completely fine - in Marie's Yell cardican you pick up and knit down the sleeves... or at least that is how I did it and it was fine!
I’ve just found your podcast and absolutely love it. Your knitting is stunning and I am looking forward to watching your older episodes. I hope to see you at Rhinebeck and will be looking out for your sweater and amazing outfit! :)
Oh….and I can’t wait to knit your hat. It looks like the perfect pattern. I would sign up for the test knit but I think I will be preoccupied with making bags for Rhinebeck weekend (I’ll be at Cakepalooza and am still sewing). :) I will definitely be making one for the colder months.
I am so impressed with you, this color work sweater is a beast in the best way possible. I love watching your videos and I can see what a great knitter you are and love how you take up challenges but also make it looks so doable 😊. I am perpetual advanced beginer cause I am not knitting as consistently, so you are an inspiration.
@@Lily_curatorial_knits ps I might have to ‘steal’ your color scheme for Celeste, at some point when I will take that on 😊. I bet you’ll look awesome at Rhinebeck!
Please do! I’ve had so many comments about color combos and choices, I’ve been wondering if I might do a class on it someday, lots of tips and tricks! 🙌
Love the colors of your Celeste, especially that pop of bright blue! Great job of being the boss of your knitting with Seaton. Have a great time in NY (so jealous as I've never been!) and hope to see a recap!
Bravissimo on that Marie Wallin-esque sweater. It is inspiring how you took charge of the sweater and made it your own version. Super interesting podcast. Thanks for putting yourself out there :)
Yes. See around the cut edges. Tiny stitches a couple rounds. You won’t be sorry. And you are doing a beautiful job. Love the Celeste sweater. Gorgeous color choice. People can knit the hats for donations too.
Well, you are completely slaying--Celeste! I kind of never even noticed that pattern, but your color palette just brings it completely to life. The whole thing is perfection, absolutely, and I can't wait to see it in person at Rhinebeck and tell you again. Also adoring the Seaton; colorwork in worsted weight yarn is the best of all possible worlds, right? As others have already said, yes, you can pick up at the armhole steeks and knit down from there--if you've felted the steeks, they are not going anywhere, but you can handstitch a safety seam using sewing thread if you really feel a need. Another option is to knit your sleeves bottom up in the round and mattress stitch them to the armhole; for even less hassle, do them both at once, separated by (ta da!) two steeks! Monosleeve! I just did Junko's Taro that way, and it works great. See you in a couple weeks! xoxo
You have been busy making! Love your Celeste sweater colors, magic. I have been looking for a hat pattern to make for several family members and am excited to start. The crown shaping looks beautiful. Thank you! Have fun at Rhinebeck 🤗
Hi Lily, so nice to see your podcast pop up. All the things you make are just beautiful. I've never felt compelled to do a test knit before until now and given it's only a hat it shouldnt' be too hard to complete at all so I've applied 💝
Would love to knit your hat, I did fill out the form. I am a huge accessory Christmas gift knitter and will enjoy the project immensely. The light blue hat look is amazing on you with your eyes you have to keep it! Your Rhinebeck sweater is Amazing !
First of all.... dude... You are now a knitting pattern writer! Congrats on that. Second.... I know need that color work sweater from Petite Knits. It's awesome!!! Love the colors you chose. See you soon. Kim
You always make the most beautiful sweaters! When I taught classes for colourwork cardigans, we machine sewed the steeks before cutting and picked up the sleeve stitches. It might be tricky to machine sew the curled cut edges but that would be the most secure. You are so skilled at whatever you do, I’m sure it will work out.
I love your Turtle Dove sweater, the color is amazing on you! I made it too in a peachy colour and it is my favorite, most wonderful sweater. So cozy and soft. I would love your Beginners Hat pattern! I have only knit one hat and would love to knit your pattern in the yarn you used as well.
I love the colorful Petite Knit sweater. You’re going to look great in it! For the steek question - you can definitely pick up and knit down. Like you said - just like picking up a button band. And you don’t need to have it sewn first. It will all be fine. Have fun at Rhinebeck.
Love your dopamine-inducing outfit plans! And it is fun to figure something crazy out like steeled intense colourwork, right? More like that kind of fun-afterwards fun, but I get it
Whenever I can, I pick up stitches for my sleeves and use short row sleeve caps. There are lots of tutorials on TH-cam for this technique. Congratulations on conquering your Seaton pullover. It’s beautiful.
Beautiful sweater!! I saw, but have not tried it yet, where you use a felting needle and lightly felt the outermost stitches, in your case the 3 stitches that would become a seam. This way they will not unravel, hope this helps.
Wonderful! Felting is what I did this time around while it worked fine, I have lots of thoughts and learning for the next time! 😂 Truly love how just doing something new one time can change perspectives! 🥰
I think if you pick up, you might have to make some sort rows to the top of the shoulder cap which I think is challenging to keep in pattern? Worse case if you decide to knit bottom up, you can cut away extra fabric to set in your sleeve. I ended up having to do that for my chestnut by Marie Wallin. I used my body work to estimate my sleeve length just to figure out what motif I wanted to start and end with. The colours you picked are beautiful! I love the ombre blend of the blue and browns.
That's a great idea! I ended up going from the sleeve down and it worked just fine, but I think I'll keep experimenting--one of the joys of the knitting process!
The Celeste colors look fabulous on you. I think using the burgundy solo will be super flattering on you as well. It's such a gorgeous color, why mess with it. The Nutiden is a beautiful color too. I think they will each get "lost" if you work them together. Each is better alone than with the other.
I immediately started picking out Elder and Fae yarn colors to make your lovely Beginners Welcome hat! Can't control myself! Would totally try to get to test knit if I wasn't already pretty over-committed this month, but I'll definitely be looking for the pattern and looking to say hi to you at Rhinebeck!
Just a thought ……… but your MW jumper would look great with plain sleeves in the rib work colour - with maybe a few rounds of motif before the cuff ……? x

Hi! I just test knit Kate Oates Rhinebeck sweater Chev and it had steeked armholes. We picked up the sleeve stitches and knit the sleeves. I checked the rest of my steeked sweaters and that’s the technique used in all of them. 😉
The Seaton sweater from Marie Wallin is amazing your colour choices are perfect, if your pressed for time, I was thinking just knit the sleeves in the one Darker Main colour it would would match the collar and rib as the body is beautiful but colour busy, just a suggestion. Hi Lily, A feast of colour and inspiration as always! Thank you! Picking up and working down on an all over colourwork drop shoulder garment is for sure a thing! Your problem solving skills will get you there. I am doing that right now on my Selbu Jacket @skeindeerknits. My go-to is crocheted reinforcement and a line of stitching on my sewing machine. Wow your Celeste sweater is beautiful. Love the colors.
Thank you so much!
I often pick up stitches and knit shoulder to cuff on sweaters. Perfectly acceptable, even if it wasn’t , your sweater your rules!
Whew! I am so relieved to hear this! Thank you! 🤗
You could also make the sleeves one color eliminating the colorwork. That ribbing color would be great.
Wow 🤩 Next level and I may just have to do this! Would be so soft and cozy too!
Absolutely agree! I haven't done separate sleeves for YEARS! I regard the pattern as a guide rather than the Bible verses. It also makes it easier to get the perfect sleeve length as you can try on the whole garment rather than guessing how the sleeve cap will fit.

How about just adding a cuff for a vest look. Beautiful color.
Definitely worth considering! Also noodling with the idea of plain sleeves, with a smaller motif at the bottom . . .
Absolutely you can pick up the stitches and knit down! I have done it many times!
Yes! Thank you!😊
For future steeking, be sure to secure first with 2 rows of sewing OR crochet OR even a hand back stitch. There are video tutorials on how to steek.
Yes! I really should have used a very thin yarn and done the same crocheted edge just for my own peace of mind . . . so far, so good, though!
